The director of Square Enix, Yoshinori Kitase, has participated in a special feature celebrating the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy X. Mr. Kitase spoke about the difficulties of assembling a team to tackle the project as Tetsuya Nomura was wrapped up in the Kingdom Hearts franchise. Other members of staff were beavering away on Kingdom Hearts, so they found it difficult to find the right people for the job. Thankfully they did and Final Fantasy X ended being one of the best-selling games in the entire Final Fantasy franchise.
Kitase: First of all, assembling the FFX team was difficult. Tetsuya Nomura and I worked on FFVII and FFVIII together, but then he was assigned to KINGDOM HEARTS (hereafter KH). He was involved with FFX as a character designer of course, but his main project was KH, and some of the other staff was assigned there too.

I find it impressive how fast they were pumping out final fantasy games in the late 90’s to early 2000’s. It was almost an annual franchise. They didn’t really feel rushed at all, and some of the best games in the series came out around that era. But now a days, it took almost a decade to remake final fantasy 7. I hope we get more resourceful for the next entries.
Probably why FFX was not very good.
Sorry I know it’s unpopular but it isnt. The lack of world map is unforgivable. No freedom
There was a world map though. The game was linear to a point, but there was still a ton to do with the airship. Every Final Fantasy is different. X is as well. I personally loved the pacing, the vastness of the lore, and the world itself to be amazing. But, to each their own.
One of the best romance stories ever told too. Everyone feels like an actual character and plays their role perfectly. Great mystery and heartbreaking tragedy. If anything, X is underrated
I don’t get why people don’t like it because it doesn’t have a world map. I felt like it made the pacing a lot better and it was a unique spin on the final fantasy format. It’s one of my favorite final fantasy’s.
Yeah as much as I loved the PS1 games (9 especially), they needed to switch up the formula a bit with 10. The linearity of the game definitely helped with the narrative storytelling, and limiting how much we could explore also keeps us grounded with Tidus’s perspective. The game isn’t the same as what came before, and that’s one of its strengths.
Imagine hating on one of the best gaming narratives of all time because it didn’t have a world map you could use to dart around the continent on a whim…
The FFX team took timeless literary tropes and masterfully subverted expectations to create one of the most origin works of any RPG that has ever existed. The story was fun, compelling, and tragic all at the same time. But you’re gonna rip on it because it didn’t include lazy gameplay mechanics like open world and instant travel at the click of a button? Give me a break!
The story is an incoherent mess. Tidus, Wakka and Rikku are annoying. The villain has hair antlers and was a common anime trope.
As for the side content like butterfly catching and lighting bolt dodging….yeah
You’re grasping at the straws with hair antlers as a negative with the game. Please go buy and play FFX, it’s one of my favorite rpg’s of the 2000’s.
I have played it back in 2002…..
Seymour was a “common anime trope”, huh? Why don’t you go ahead and tell us what that trope is? Because the only people that could possibly come to that conclusion are the ones that stopped paying attention to the writing the moment they saw him.
There are other examples of anime villains that share his motivations, but they are few and far between while also hailing from some of the very best anime works ever produced.
As far as the rest of your critique – don’t know what to tell yah. I can’t help people who have poor taste and invariably view slop like Skyrim and Witcher 3 as “good games”. The FFX narrative is easily among the tightest and most coherent of the entire franchise.
There’s a hilarious irony to a Final Fantasy 10 fanboy calling other games “slop” lmao. I’ll leave you to figure out why that is.
Then again, you come across as a braindead mouth-breather so you probably won’t be able to figure it out. How embarrassing for you. 🤭
I love X so much (and the MrFrost’s point, this whole era was amazing) X has such an amazing story to it and a fantastic cast of characters and it all comes together so well. The battles were also super fun with the on the fly swapping. Great game I may have to play again soon on switch 2.
The story of FFX was okay, the characters were good, and the ending was terrible. Made even worse by X-2 which give us a good ending only to be taken away by the FFX 2.5 Price of Freedom and FFX Will audio drama which kills Tidus all over again than resurrects him as some kind of living specter, which the catch that if he remembers the exact moment or way he died he will instantly cease to exist. This is all officially canon.
