Sony see this move as the logical step for the millions of Wii owners that are fed up with standard definition visuals and are clamoring to jump on the High Definition bandwagon. I’m a Wii owner. I bought a PS3 so I could have a blu-ray player. The fact that it also played many console games I couldn’t buy was a bonus. I now own lots of games for both systems and enjoy them both equally for entirely different reasons.
I fail to understand the reasoning behind this. The Wii U will be HD. Why would the so-called “casual gamer” Wii owners, who might be less familiar with Sony’s hardware, take their risk with an unfamiliar device when they can upgrade to the next generation of a device they are familiar with and enjoy? And Sony also seems to be forgetting about brand loyalty. I own aPSP, PS2, and a PS3 but I bleed red for Nintendo. You’ll find a significant difference on my shelves between the amount of Playstation software and hardware I own, and Nintendo software and hardware I own. Guess which one there’s more of, Sony. :P
I’ll be honest, I loved the PS2, I think it was one of the best systems of all time. But with the PS3, it just seems like Sony completely said “Screw you” to the mentality that they had with the PS2, which had games for everyone and anyone.

Ya, I got a PS3, and yes I now have BluRay movies, but I hardly got rid of my Wii for it. I still have a ton more Wii games, and continue to play those and Virtual Console frequently. I will definitely be getting a Wii U far earlier than any eventual PS4.

I never owned a PS2 nor a PS. Why would I want a PS3? PS2 did have Guitar Hero, but Wii got those, that’s about it.

Looking at the PS3, there’s no game that I want enough to justify a system purchase. Maybe Kingdom Hearts 3 if it’s a PS3 exclusive but that’s it. Otherwise, Sony is NOT getting my money.

So going by their logic the ps3 will be skipped in favor of the wiiu which has hd at a good frame rate great 3rd party support and every good engine being ported to it, Netflix in hd, a real online browser wit a real voice chat interface let along cross voice chat which isn’t even on the ps3 yet. USB hdd support a cooler controller and backwardcompatiable support.
Gasp and all Sony is offering is a sequel to a game many people did not want uncharted and a handheld with a monthly subscription al la xbox live. I wonder how that cap will work?

Here are a few things to think about, Sony: N64 is a generation behind PS2, so it’s really not fair to compare the two consoles, way to suck up your ego there. Another thing, who honestly cares about the Blu-Ray stuff now? It was a big thing when it first came out, but now I don’t know anyone who goes out of their way to get Blu-Ray. Lastly, why would people migrate specifically to the PS3 (if they even do migrate)? Almost every game you get on PS3 you can get on 360 too. The whole hacking thing would also throw off people from getting a PS3, I know I wouldn’t trust my personal info with Sony at this point.
And just so we’re clear, I have a PS3, I’m not being biased as I’ve tried using it. I haven’t even touched it since a few months after I got it in 2008/2009.

Is sony that ignorant? I got the n64 as my first console yes but right after I upgraded to the gamecube. It was more powerful than the ps2. I do have the ps2 and ps3 which are fun but in no way would I give up my wii. I’m still playing it and catching up with games that came out a while back I never bought/played. Right now I’m enjoying spyborgs and I already beat Goldeneye and Kirby’s Epic Yarn. I love the wii. I have played it more than the 360 and ps3 combined. If people have their wii right now why not upgrade to the wii u next year? I know I am. And its not smart to compare consoles of different generations. Its like comparing the nes to the 360. Now comparing handhelds I bought the ds and later psp (which I regret) and I have the 3ds. No way will I buy the vita. Its not worth the money. I don’t want to be forced to keep touching the fron and back of the system to make people do things (yea it has regular controls but in uncharted for the vita it seems forced). I’ve had a PS3 and Wii for many years now and I realized the other day that I don’t own one PS3 game, nor are there any games I like to play on the system. However, I own several Wii games and still occasionally play them. I mostly use my PS3 for Netflix and Bluray. I would also like to point out that Sony has been saying that Wii owners would migrate to the PS3 since their system came out.

When the original Playstation and N64 were released at the beginning of that generation, I went with the Playstation. I owned a Super Nintendo during the 2nd generation of video games, and I always wanted a Genesis because the games seemed more mature. No blood in Mortal Kombat on SNES, while Genesis held nothing back. Also, Sonic had a cooler image than Mario, at least that’s what I felt back then when I was 4-7. Then when I saw Crash Bandicoot, I thought it was my chance for a better experience with a system with much better graphics. For a while I liked the decision I made, until Sony released the dual shock controller, which is the controller model they stuck with from thereon. It is by far the worst controller ever created, and why they continue to support that model is beyond me. Even the original NES controller felt better. So I defected to N64 and fell in love with Mario Kart, Ocarina of Time, etc. I never went back to Sony again. Even if Nintendo went out of business, I would choose Microsoft, but Sony is a complete joke.

Nor have I heard anyone say, “I need a Blu-Ray player… I should buy one for $200 instead of buying an ACTUAL blu-ray player for $69 at Wal-Mart.”
PS3 is still an overpriced machine for what it is. Nobody cares about blu-ray; most gamers download and/or stream movies these days anyway, and those who don’t already have a blu-ray player. Sony needs to realize that it’s grasping at straws that aren’t even there anymore.

I don’t even think it will have optical out for audio. Still, setting that aside, the Way games will be envisioned and played will be next-gen. Which is what Nintendo has always been about – Inovative Game Play.

The ONE reason why I would buy a Sony product is to play Kingdom Hearts, and yes that would require me to buy a PSP, but that’s it. I wouldn’t never leave Nintendo for Sony. I love Nintendo, so don’t think my comments are anti-Nintendo in anyway, however in the next year, I do believe Wii owners who are interested in gaming (not the casual folks who bought the Wii for Wii Sports) will migrate away from the Wii to another console, however I don’t believe they’ll pick PS3 over 360. 360 is the superior console this generation, they won. They had the most amount of great games, they had the best online component, they did most things right.
Having said this, when the Wii U drops, I’m confident Nintendo will regain a lot of gamers IF they have a solid launch line up. If not, they’ll just get the dedicated fans and it’ll be an uphill battle – it’ll be the Gamecube once again. (To which, I loved and is still one of my favorite consoles ever in terms of games).

Blu-ray discs are expensive for me ($5 DVDs FTW) and there aren’t that many interesting games to play with the PS3.

Graphics doesn’t make a great game. Are Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Banjo-Kazooie, and several more from the N64 great games? Yes. Are the graphics bad compare to now? Yes. Does that make them any less now? No.
Graphics are not the point of games. They are meant to work alongside with the story and gameplay, not dominate them or else it’ll end up as a pretty game with a bad story and a bad gameplay.

Technically we’re always comparing on thing versus the other. The difference is that no one on Nintendo’s side of the fence one has ever said that they think PS3 owners will migrate over to the Wii U based off alleged data from some trend 11 years ago…
Sony puts their foot in their mouth a lot, with this latest entry being that they’re trying to think for “millions” of Wii owners that they clearly don’t even know or much less understand.
I think what a lot of people who “don’t like” the Wii don’t realize is that the Wii itself is a wonderful video game console that is very enjoyable and met and set many expectations in the eyes of gamers in it’s own right. I wish the same could be same of the developers that have been making nothing but shovelware for the Wii since launch, which is what a lot of people have unfortunately come to associate the Wii with.
I own a Wii and I upgraded from my DS Lite to the 3DS. I own an Xbox 360 solely for FPS games.
Like it or not the ps3 is too good! The fact that I’m playing it more then my 360 just shows the content their bringing to that device is amazing it’s better then the Wii!

Definitely. I got upset with the Wii’s bullshit long ago. Don’t get me wrong… It DOES have some good games (Brawl, Mario Kart, dkcr, galaxy), but everything else on the system just doesn’t matchup to the ps3’s exclusive library. Even the 360’s GOOD exclusives are almost nonexistent these days

When I got bored of the Wii, I got an Xbox360. I really don’t see why Wii owners will buy a PS3. They’re either loyal Nintendo fans or casual gamers who just play Wii sports or Wii fit.
I’ll admit I have a PS3 and a Wii. The only reason I bought a PS3 was to play Resident Evil 5, Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII, 3D Dot Game Heroes, and Uncharted. 5 games. I own over 40 Wii games. What does that say about variety between the two systems?
I’d rather give up gaming for good then switch to GayStation… It’s Nintendo or bust.

Alright, lets see who owns the Wii: Hardcore Nintendo Fans, Hardcore gamers, Young children, Adults, and the elderly.
Now lets see who owns a PS3: Hardcore Sony fans, Hardcore gamers, and immature kids who think they’re mature because they can swear on COD.
So lets assume that approx. 60% of hardcore Nintendo and Sony fans are also classified as hardcore gamers. Which means they probably own all consoles.
Now lets which sub-grooup of Wii owners would “flock” to the PS3.
Hardcore Nintendo fans? Well, I already own one, two actually, and I havn’t touched it for over a year now. As for the ones who dont own one yet, it could happen, but it wont be a massive surge.
Hardcore gamers? Probably 90% already own either a PS3 or a 360 with their Wii. so I dont see anything massive happening.
Young children? I dont think their parents would buy them a console which is flooded with FPS and various violent or “mature” games. (sigh, i hate using that word.)
Adults? If they’re not part of the “Hardcore” group they probably dont care much for video games, other than to play Wii sports, or Wii fit.
Elderly? No. GTFO, they’re not going to play any PS3 games.
The PS3 could maybe sell another 2 million, but thats slightly pushing the bar.
I have a Wii and Xbox 360. I have no need to buy a PS3 right now. Good system, though.

Wii was my first console this gen, followed by 360, then I finally got a used PS3 as the original 60 gigs are the only “true” PS3. Also for those Wii owners that wanna get a HD system, why would they get a PS3 when the Wii U is on the way? Also what makes PS3 more appealing then a 360? I mean technically, even though they have different interface, most their retail games are the same.

lmao first off comparing N64 to PS2 is just hilarious. Second they are forgetting about all the wii owners who already own an HD system called the 360. Third the wii life cycle is still not over there are still a good amount of games yet to come out this year with skyward sword capping it off. That leaves only 3-4 months until Wii U drops, meaning current wii owners and nintendo fans are most likely already saving up for it as we speak. Final point gamers in general are looking forward to the wii U wether they want to admit it or not, it’s a new piece of technology and the first step to a new generation of consoles. Iv already done it, as soon as Nintendo announced the Wii U line up of Mario this and Zelda That, for god sake have many versions of mario kart can we take. Sold my Wii and brought a PS3 to go with my 360 and I love them both. Just wanted more grown up games, and iv got move and kinect for the occasional party games.
They haven’t really announced a line up of Mario this or Zelda that for Wii u. More 3rd party titles have been announced then nintendo titles though I’m sure There will be. In another post further down from this one nintendo has announced that it will try to create more mature games so obviously they know they have an image that they are trying to change it. You did say you sold your Wii for an xbox and ps3 so you might just be a trolling idk. I have all 3 systems and will buy a Wii u, ps4 and the new xbox likely to. If you have the cash then why not buy them all? Though I agree about Mario cart and stuff I cant wait for a Zelda or Metroid game. If nintendo does release a new mature title I’d love to see what it is.

Ha! Nintendo fans get pissed when other companies talk smack about Nintendo! I admit, I get a little peeved too, but I try not to let my inner fan girl overcome my reasoning.
Those who are “fed up” with standard definitions wpuld have already moved on. This would have made a little more sense a while back, but with the announcement of Wii U, a lot of people will just wait for it. Casual gamers will stick to name brand, just like with Apple. Most of Sony games don’t appeal to them the same way Nintendo games. As for the core, they would just have both systems or wait for Wii U too.
Personally, the only Sony game that I liked was the Uncharted series up till UC 2. However, for some reason I feel a franchise fatigue already with this, and the new Tomb Raider overshadows UC 3 in my eyes. I got Infamous for free (remember the whole PSN hack?), but I still didn’t like it. Killzone 2 was a let down. As much as I’m pissed with NoA, I still like Nintendo games like Zelda. The way they design games is a bit different. The have the same names, but they all feel different.
Also, even though we have a Wii game drought in the NA, and practically everywhere, I have been playing my Wii more than my PS3 recently. I just went back and bought games that I missed like Metroid Other M and Red Steel 2 (finally got Wii Motion +). I also have 2 more RPG’s for Wii that I bought and a couple more to get later on.
HD is good, but at some point, it gets too generic if games have that grey, photorealistic look like military shooters and such. I wish more games would look like Valkyrie Chronicles.
I think wii owners would have migrated time ago, now they will come back to wii u, and the ones that didn’t migrate, they won’t migrate ever… i think that’s more logical

Yeah… Sony needs to get over themselves. I have a Wii and a 360. I’m fine with both of them and my blu-ray player. How could Sony possibly tempt me to get a PS3, with its complete lack of backwards compatibility (on the Slims anyway) with PS2, the unreliability and lack of security with the PSN, and its Wii rip-off known as Move? They can’t, it’s impossible. Anyone who does fall for Sony’s tricks is a sucker.
Oh and by the way, I’m a gamer that still plays Super NES more than anything else. Well I Have a Wii And I recently Bought a Ps3 But Only Because it was at $160 dollars and it was a new console and my friend did not want it because he wanted a Xbox 360 xD i have more than 50 wii games why because Nintendos Software is awesome now i only have 9 ps3 games and basically its because there ps3 exclusives like God Of War , Infamous ETC but all i see are FPS which I Undoubtly Own Black Ops :D I Love Call Of Duty Too LOL I Love Both COnsoles I have Yet To see The Xbox FOr there exclusives Like Halo and Gears of War I Love all consoles because there all for one thing and thats gaming so either way i love sony and nintendo yet i hate sony for triying to say they will reign the console industry there not gonna do sh%$T Because Wii U Is On The Way SO SOny Back Off Wii Users Will Just Migrate For Some time and then migrate to Wii U :P

Well I have to admit, I thought I was bored of the Wii, so I finally bought a PS3 when they had a $100 gift card deal. Ok so, yeah… PS3 has slightly more amazing graphics… But not really. They still use e same low res image maps butnnow they’re just clearer… I know some of the newer games are better, but I really don’t care. Seriously, the games are all the same old PS BS, nothing really new. I’ve only had PS3 for two months and I’m already bored with it. Arkham Asylum was ok, Metal Gear ok, Assasins creed ok… Just nothing extraordinary. I just downloaded Wipeout HD Fury and thought, “Gamecube F-ZERO is 1000x better than this”. It’s like Nintendo is Apple, and Sony is Microsoft. Nin just knows how to make games fun and interesting. I can’t wait for Wii U now.
