In a rather bold move Microsoft’s chief financial officer Dennis Durkin has told Industry Gamers that Xbox 360 first party games are superior to first party exclusives on Nintendo and Sony platforms. It’s clearly something that will cause quite a debate amongst the gaming community. Do you believe first party Xbox 360 games are of a better caliber than first party Nintendo games?
” … I think our first party performance in terms of quality bars and units per title this shift has been superior to our competition’s.” While there’s no real way to get a fix on the number of first party sales of Xbox 360 games compared to others, the article points out that the MetaCritic web site has an average review rating of 75 for games from Microsoft Game Studios, compared to 77 for first party Nintendo games and 74 for Sony’s first party game titles.
” … you can’t dispute titles like Forza which has consistently come out on a repeated cadence and sold multi-million units. You can’t dispute things like Fable, which again, on a very consistent pace, has come out and sold 2 and 3 million units a pop.” He added, “And now new titles, like Kinect Sports, which has come out and sold over 3 million units. Some nintendo franchises are much more over rated. Mario games are usually decent, and metroid can be fun. But the Legand of Zelda is probably the MOST overrated game series ever created. Absolutely NOTHING has changed since the first few games and it has added no new concepts to the industry. You kind of can say the same thing about pokemon, but atleast they keep things fresh by adding new regions and pokemon.

Saying that nothing has changed in Zelda is an extremely ignorant statement. Every game is created in its own unique style and brings new mechanics to the series.

Last time i checked the entire world in each Zelda game is brand new with the only similarity being the names of certain places. Also, how are new pokemon any different than new monsters, bosses, dungeons, items, or npcs?

The Legend of Zelda is NOT the most overrated game in history. If people love it, it does not always make it overrated. The reason people love it so much is because of the amount of innovation and difference it brings from its predecessor. How many game franchises out there that you can think of bring a new art style every time? how many game franchises can you think of have lasted 25 years? How many games out there have revolutionized gaming as much as The Legend of Zelda?
You know why The Legend of Zelda is so successful? Because it is far from a rehash of any previous games, unlike games such as Uncharted (Which I love, but so far it’s looking like it’s about to go down the same way as Tomb Raider)
In essence, The legend of Zelda can not be called overrated if it deserves the rating it gets. You know it does. There has never been any game as revolutionary, bold and daring as The legend of Zelda series.
I think OoT may be the only overrated Zelda game, actually.
Why is that? It was a great game that revolutionised modern gaming. But now, everyone seems to be bashing it saying that it’s overrated.
Of course if you compare it to todays games, it may be not as good, but keep in mind it was released in 1998. It gave people the oppurtunity to explore vast 3D worlds, never before seen in games.
It also gave us the Z-targeting system, which eliminated the awkward camera in 3D gaming. If you believe OoT was not one of the greatest game in history, try only playing games prior to the release of OoT, then try out OoT. Then you’ll understand why it is so critically aclaimed.
I like OoT, but I hate the sidequests. All throughout the time I spent at fishing hole, I was thinking, “Come on! I don’t want to stand around fishing for hours of my life!

TP wasn’t the best Zelda, but it’s neither half as bad as the majority of games that get a 95% score on rating sites.
The level design was interesting, the music is epic as ever, the story is good as always, the wolf Link was something different, jet good. I can’t find anything that I would say BAD in this game. There are many things I could say mediocore, but bad… no no.

Twilight Princess is my second favorite, coming from one who’s played all but three Zelda games. TP has one of the best storylines ive ever seen. The dungeons are challenging. Not the first one, but thats just supposed to give u a feel of the game and get used to it. The only complaint i have is how they threw Ganon into the end. Wolf Link was a great addition to the Twilight Realm’s feel.

While I don’t completely agree with Microsoft’s opinion’s on “having better first party games” – the facts are pretty clear. If they don’t have the better 1st party games now, they will eventually. Nintendo needs to start expanding. They need to get more development teams churning out classic Nintendo franchises, they need to work on new IP’s and they need to invest in smaller companies, bringing new franchises under the Nintendo umbrella (imagine if Nintendo purchased the Angry Birds as an example).
If I was to count how many first party games I’ve played on my 360 and my Wii in the past 12 months, I’m confident I’ll find I’ve played more MS games… primarily because of the lack of first party Nintendo games.
Nintendo needs to step up, or this idea that Microsoft has better 1st party games will be a very real reality!

I honestly can’t think of anything besides Halo, and that gets always compared to Metroid Prime, though I think Metroid Prime wins hands down in story and gameplay; Metroid Other M had even better story. The thing it doesn’t have is multiplayer, so that goes to Halo. Gears of War doesn’t count since it’s done by a third party developer that also works on other platform. The games are tied to the 360 through a contract, but it’s not first party. I also the likes of Kinect Adventures and such can be compared in the same level as Mario Galaxy or Zelda. So am I missing something or MS just had a mental breakdown?

First, to say that your first party exclusives are better than someone else’s is plain stupid. Second, if you’re going to try backing that up, do it by genres and then tally up the wins. And third, don’t claim a damn thing if you don’t have the numbers to prove it, people will rip you apart.
So, let’s compare:
-Nintendo’s first party franchises have 20+ years on anything Microsoft has. They pretty much defined the basis of gaming. Microsoft doesn’t.
-Microsoft can claim that Halo beats out any other FPS because it did it right and put down the brick work for every other FPS.
-Microsoft cannot say that Fable>Legend of Zelda. Hardcore Zelda fan rage aside, Zelda hasn’t been going downhill since the first game, whereas Fable is, IMO.
Seems like Nintendo’s got a lead. Anyone else care to elaborate further? I’m all ears.
microsoft first party games: halo, fable, gears of war. and that’s about it. xbox relies on mostly third party support. nintendo first party games: mario, zelda, pokemon, metroid, f zero, star fox, kirby, kid icarus, and many more. and god if microsoft gets this cocky i’m going to quickly lose all respect for them. sony has been annoying the crap out of me as of late with their numerous bold and bullshit cocky statements against nintendo. and because of those statements i have lost nearly all respect for sony and it almost makes me want to get rid of all of my sony products. i never thought that microsoft would also stoop this low. they’d better not, i dont want more than one company getting as cocky as sony, overconfident assholes.
Microsoft first party games: None of the ones you just mentioned. Halo: Bungie, Fable: Lion Head, Gears: I don’t know but it ain’t Microsoft.
And once again, people are talking smack about Nintendo but are failing miserably. This guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about in the least. Microsoft doesn’t have many first party games to go on, and Nintendo has Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, Donkey Kong, Metroid, Kirby, Kid Icarus, the Wario series, and Pikmin. All of these game series are successful and have recent games out and/or new games in development right now.
Think about this logically, people. People from Microsoft (and Sony, for that matter) are just going to talk their trash and stir up the Nintendo fans and fanboys while they can. When the Wii U comes out, people who represent the companies who compete against Nintendo will still be running their bulldog mouths to try to hide their puppy dog butts. They may have been able to compete with all of this motion control business, but they won’t be able to successfully copy Nintendo’s controller that has a touch screen and an ample amount of buttons. They won’t be able to do what Nintendo does without it being thought of as little more than a ripoff (Kinect and Move were, but to a lesser extent).
In essence, the anti-Nintendo fanboys can have their little laugh, beating their chest and saying that Nintendo’s first party games are for babies just because they aren’t M-rated games about killing people or online FPS games where 12-year-olds cuss like sailors on headsets whenever someone does better than them. Come next generation, if Sony or Microsoft can’t come up with their own ideas to counter Nintendo, they’ll be hung out to dry.
While Nintendo fans are generally reaping the benefits of Nintendo’s cornucopia of games and checking this website to see updates about some of their favorite games, you dissenters have come onto a Nintendo-based website to try to make Microsoft seem superior. You say Nintendo games are for babies? That’s odd, because from the looks of things, Nintendo fans are where most of the maturity here is coming from. Strange, isn’t it? One of the only arguments against Nintendo seems to be getting disproved here.

You know, that was really stupid of Mircrosoft. If they know that people are losing their respect for Sony because they’re bad-mouthing Nintendo, what makes them think they can get away with it? I had no problem with Microsoft they just made their games and never said anything. Sony went around saying they’re gonna beat Nintendo and everything else in creation and look were that’s got them!

This is more continuing “pants-shitting” from Nintendo’s competition. First, it was Sony saying, “Vita + PS3 can do everything Wii U can,” despite the fact that Wii U hasn’t even come out yet, so we don’t know exactly everything that the Wii U can do. Not to mention the fact that Vita is a separate platform, thereby not allowing developers to create games specifically aimed at the combination of Vita + PS3, unless they want to take a significant risk towards sales.
And now, Microsoft is coming out of the gates trying to boast how awesome their IPs are, and even going so far as to ignorantly claim they’re superior. Sales would suggest otherwise, for one. Longevity would also lend credence to the contrary as well. Nintendo has over 25 years of strong first-party history, and the Wii did nothing to still that fact.
Meanwhile, Nintendo is quietly smiling behind monumental success, and basking in what I’m sure is will be yet another enormously successful console launch. It just goes to show who has integrity and tact in the business, and how still wet-behind-the-ears their competition is with their cocky, arrogant attitudes.
Honestly, I have been playing the XboX for half of a year and I don’t even know what the first-party games are, if there are any. If they do, they’re not very unique games that stand out.
Forgot about Halo, but I’ve haven’t had too much interest in that game. I’ve played it, it’s good but not fully for me.

You know what i find kind of funny, the reason that third parties didn’t wanted to develope for wii was because they said that they couldn’t compete with nintendo first and second parties(Gamefreaks etc.), that is the reason that nintendo started with the 3ds and will continue with the Wii U, and schedule launching taking into consideration the third parties. I have yet to hear Microsoft having to do something similar. So i wonder which console has the best first parties? A really hard question, Indeed.

One nintendo is the biggest video game innovator out there people may say that stuff like motion controlling has been out there already (and it has) but nintendo brought it to video game consoles they brought it to the masses and actually they have been innovating since their first system like the light gun, the fitness pad they even had motion games on gameboy color.
Second they nintendo is for everyone not just kids the wii may not have as many (mature or hardcore games as the so called gaming community calls them) as the xbox 360 or ps3 but they do have good ones like mortal kombat armageddon,resident evil 0,1,4 umbrella and darkside chronicles,obscure 2,madworld (never played) conduit 1 and 2,no more heroes 1 and 2 (never played), red steel 1 and 2, the grinder (comes out in halloween 2011), and many more that i cant remember. and they are all unique because of motion controls
Third nintendo has always been about video games as youve seen with the wii they focus on gameplay how to get gamers more into games. They have also always been about the gamer they try to keep the costs of things down they dont include things like cd,dvd, or blu ray into their systems because of 2 reasons one it keeps costs down and two because by now people already have cd,dvd,and bluray players in their house
