Official Chart Track figures show that the Nintendo 3DS XL sold less than 10,000 units when it launched in the United Kingdom at the weekend. The larger console has outsold the original 3DS (whose total is based on seven days’ data) by a factor of just over 2:1. Sales should clearly improve when New Super Mario Bros 2 launches in the UK on August 17th.

Actually it’s common for an upcoming title in a major franchise to boost sales figures of a console or handheld. Not to mention the inbuilt desire of human kind to always have the newest thing to show off.
I think that people who are interested in Nintendo and its products will already know about NSMB. Means, most of the people who are planning to buy NSMB probably already own a regular 3DS or bought the 3DSXL at launch. => Brings us back to my theory: NSMB won’t change anything.
Who knows? Maybe nintendo made nsmb2 just because they new the 3DSXL sales will be awful. I guess you can say that they just copy and pasted NSMBWII and NSMBDS into NSMB2 just to boost the 3DSXL sales. It makes sense to me.

It will, here in the UK the 3DS didn’t sell well at launch due to a lack of any mario title. When Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 came out as well as the price drop, 3DS’ were going out of stock like crazy
That didn’t happen in the UK only, it happened everywhere. And the reason why that happened back then was because there were barely ANY good games on the 3DS, so people didn’t have any reason to buy one. Right now, there are enough games. So people who want a 3DS already own one. I don’t think that there are many people in the UK, or on planet earth at all, that would want to buy a 3DS/3DSXL ONLY for NSMB2. They already have enough other Mario games available, so if they want them, they already own a 3DS, as I said.
it probably will actually, generally when any mario game is released, nintendo’s hardware sales go up quite a bit. just look at how mario kart and mario 3d land boosted sales.
As I said it to someone else already, the thing with Mario Kart7 and Mario 3D Land was something completely different. Both were the FIRST Mario games on the 3DS. Before their release, there were barely any good games on the 3DS, so people didn’t have any reason to buy one. But by now, there are enough good games. People now do have a reason to buy a 3DS. And NSMB2 alone won’t be a reason for anyone to buy a whole new system.
calm down dude, im just saying that with mario games, comes console sales. and some people still havent purchased a 3ds, and if they want that new mario game that comes out on the same day, why not get it with the newer 3ds. there is little no insentive for people who already own a 3ds to buy the xl, but the fact that a new mario game is coming out for it, will boost the sales marginally.

To put this in context with the rest of the UK market and how awful it is right now.
10,000 3DSXL sales plus the 5,000 regular 3DS sales should should see it outsell the next best selling piece of hardware in the UK by 2:1.

No surprise there. The UK is not really known as big supporters of Nintendo. It will be interesting to see how it does in other countries…especially America.
I think the main reasons why Nintendo stuff sells less in Britain are:
a. There are less people in the UK (obviously, lol)
b. The pricing in the UK is often outrageously disproportional to the US pricing.

I say if you can spend the extra 20 dollars, get an XL. I actually uprgaded my 3DS to an XL, and am still waiting for it to come out. It’s got about an hour (or two, idk) extra battery life, anti-glare, different and better button placement, a sturdier 3D slide pad, apparantly the 3D effect is also better because of the screen size as well. For an extra 20 dollars, i’d say pick it up.
They should make New Super Mario Bros 3 : Wario Bros Rampage next…

I played a demo unit XL yesterday and was quite impressed, the screen size really makes a difference. I won’t buy yet because there is no CCP out for it and I am reasonably happy with the regular 3DS, but I definitely will get an XL at some point :)

I don’t think that’s what he’s talking about. He’s talking about how the vast majority of games on the VITA, at this moment, are ports or PS3 sequels w/o anything unique. It needs more games like Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation, Phantasy Star Online 2, etc.
I wouldn’t say more “refined” taste, just different. You’re right, all the XL is would be a bigger 3ds with no extra features as it’s not a redesign. It’s a variety thing.
Though apparently some people seem to like it, no matter how “mindless” they are. Easier 3D, better battery life, and a more comfortable grip are good points towards people who aren’t sure yet. :)
Im getting one, but i didnt get an original 3DS, so this one just seems like the better choice. Plus its more sturdy buttons ect i wont have a hinge cracking disaster like i did with the DS Lite

The no-charger thing is easily a kick in the teeth. more expensive AND you need to buy a £20 charger + dock for it (or the £7.00 cheaper version) and not many places are advertising this fact. Asda I know don’t show it, have the box in the back and don’t even stock the charger. Well that’s helpful.
I’m pretty happy with mine, the screen size really does help with a lot of games. Like Kingdom Hearts and Resi Evil (although Resi loses the circle-pad-pro feature.
The Pikmin moving across the system transfer was just amazing. Made a dull thing to do all the more fun. And I’m getting £110 back for my old one so in total only £50 spent~

eh, unless you’re one of those guys trading in a 3DS for the XL, I don’t see why someone would buy one. Atleast, right now anyway. Everyone I know isn’t going to bother with this atleast until it gets a price drop, they’re either content with the standard 3DS or outright aren’t interested in the handheld.

Its not sold as many yet because we havent got paid, and most people will be saving up, or planning it as an xmas gift

That’s pretty poor, no matter what a fan says you can be sure Nintendo are not pleased. It’s no surprise, our media is either non-chalont or cynical about Nintendo, no less the BBC which seriously have a pretty low opinion of Nintendo.
Nintendo just don’t bother to try and keep their profile up in the UK. There’s no clever sponsorships, not enough advertisment and no handling of the media whatsoever. They didn’t do too bad a few years back, but they seem to have massivly cut back again. SImple fact is there’s still lot of gamers basically oblivious to the 3DS and the 3D by many is off putting…I seiously think a significant redesign is needed to get people passed the mental block. It looks too much like a DS, and the 3D still seems manditory, cumbersome and headache-inducing.

1) It’s stupidly expensive in the UK compared to how much it costs in US.
2)Little to no Promo. I didn’t even know it was out yet…
