Bethesda Now Says “Never Say Never” On Wii U Support

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim

Despite Bethesda’s Vice President of PR and marketing Pete Hines telling Eurogamer that the company has no plans to develop for Wii U, Hines now says it’s a case of never say never. Hines told IGN that Bethesda doesn’t have any Wii U or PlayStation Vita games in development, but if something came up and caught their interest, then they may consider developing for the platforms. Hines concluded by saying that what they have going on right now doesn’t fit the Wii U or the PlayStation Vita.

“We don’t have anything announced for Wii U. We don’t have anything announced for the handhelds. Are there opportunities that could come up there that could make sense and be the kinds of things we would want to do? Absolutely. But what we have going on right now doesn’t fit with that.”

“For a game like Wolfenstein, as it’s designed, we want it out on as many platforms as we can support that will support the game as it’s envisioned, where we don’t have to cut features or dial stuff back or end up delivering a game where Wolf on this platform is nothing like it is on the PS4.”

“Other platforms that we’re not doing anything for, we’ll wait and see. I would never say never. There are a lot of talented folks doing a lot of cool stuff, and maybe opportunities arise, or maybe somebody internally says, ‘hey, I have this great idea to do this thing on this platform.’ If that makes sense and it feels like something Bethesda would do, okay. But we’re not just going to bang a round peg into a square hole. That’s not how we work. It doesn’t make sense for us.”

    1. Not any Bethesda game. I would buy skyrim or fallout but they need to actually try and fix those bugs and glitches.

  1. I think Nintendo should just develop more games and have a steady monthly stream of first party titles.

    1. They did say they’re looking to expand their internal teams in order make new IP’s and bring back old franchises alongside their big franchises. :)

      1. They should have started doing that years ago, before the Wii U launched. The Wii U wouldn’t have this terrible drought of games it has now.

      2. That’s true. I would also like to see a full year without any kind of Mario game releasing. Those games are great but we see too many of them.

    1. I cant agree. They say they dont want to leave anything out of the game so it is the same as Ps4 and yet Wolfenstein is coming to Ps3 and 360. I dont like being lied to therefore cant give them respect on this. It is a shame cuz I like their games. Take it easy.

  2. I’ll believe in the third-party stories when Nintendo releases their first-party titles and sell this thing.
They’ve got the hardware, they just need the software and they’re taking a bit too long.

  3. Grouping the WiiU in with the vita.. thats a low blow Bethesda… I mean sure I’m disappointed in my WiiU, not for lack of game quality but, lack of support. Just damn, that hurts Beth…

    1. Yeah well both are similar in that they lack sales. Also, notice how Bethesda never said anything about the 3DS… O.O SPOILER ALERT! 💋

      1. I wouldn’t expect anything from bethesda on any mobile platform. Their games are to grand in scale and require too much information to be loaded at once.

      2. Not really the Vita has been stuck at around 4 million for about 14 months , the Wiiu is about 4 mill in 7 months. And the Wiiu has lots of Huge games right round the corner which will propel sales right up.

    1. Yeah, I can imagine it now! Being able to easily access it without having to strain your eyes on the T.V. would be awesome. If it happens I will get it day one!

        1. Yeah that’s very true. The fact they are bothering to talk about it suggests good news, but I’m being optimistic.

  4. “For a game like Wolfenstein, as it’s designed, we want it out on as many platforms as we can support that will support the game as it’s envisioned, where we don’t have to cut features or dial stuff back or end up delivering a game where Wolf on this platform is nothing like it is on the PS4.”

Translation: The Wii U is an underpowered console that in order to bring Wolfenstein to it we would have to scale it down.

          1. Whats really funny though, is that devz really are scared to do something on WIIU? Why? More IP’s on Nintendo have reached Immortality than on any other platform. So many IP have come, gone and never returned on sony n ms consoles lol… wow. Devz are oblivious to the fact that power alone wont set you in stone. My prediction is that dozens if not hundreds of devz are going to get their little hearts broke this gen, because RAM and a marginally better GPU will not grant it for you like magic, you actually do need the Magic to get the game into the status of say a Legend of Zelda, Mario, Metroid, SSB, Xenoblade, and countless others on Nintendo… get real.

    1. I think it was more of a general statement and not directed at the Wii U. I doubt they even have a Dev Kit so they don’t know exactly what they can and can’t do with the console. 💋

    2. “For a game like Wolfenstein, as it’s designed, we want it out on as many platforms as we can support that will support the game as it’s envisioned, where we don’t have to cut features or dial stuff back or end up delivering a game where Wolf on this platform is nothing like it is on the PS4.”

TRANSLATION: Since we are too lazy to tap into the complex power reserves on the Wii U that actually give it the ability to produce graphics on-par with the PS4 and XBOX despite having less raw-horsepower, we are going to assume the general public is too stupid to understand how such things work and give a stale and antiquated response that we have seen other studios give about not bringing games to the Wii U.

Seriously, how one paragraph can have so many contradictions is beyond me. The level of sheer unabashed arrogance of these companies is staggering. This is not as bad as EA and the Frostbite fiasco, but it smells the same.

As much as I rag on Nintendo (and deservedly so in every case) I will ALWAYS point out BS lies directed towards them. Criterion Games debunked the Wii U ‘underpowered’ myth months ago and Mario Kart 8 ripped what was left over to shreds. The fact that the same excuses people are making for not bringing games to the Wii U were the same excuses they made for not making games for the 3DS. They thought they had Nintendo over a barrel but low and behold the 3DS is the fastest-selling console ever and best selling console worldwide right now WITHOUT 3rd party support.

People are going to come out in droves to buy Wii U’s this holiday season and then it will have a strong library of games. 1st party games no less. These 3rd party studios are really setting themselves up for a massive fail. If the same thing happens with the Wii U the happened with the 3DS that will prove once and for all that Nintendo (just like in the last gen) does not NEED 3rd party support and hasn’t needed it for 15 years.

    3. They might of been talking about the Vita also you pillok.

If Wolfenstein is coming to PS3 and 360 then a version better than those could come to Wiiu , period.

  5. why can’t these clown devs just say they won’t develop for the console until sales go up. it’s so fucking simple. everybody knows the reason.

    1. Because that is not a valid excuse. If sales go up without 3rd party support then Nintendo doesn’t NEED 3rd party support.

      #3DS

    1. Nintendo fanboys say that about every developer that turns down the Wii U.
It’s happening so frequently, according to them, every developer on the face of the earth is trash.

      1. Even you would have to admit, the amount of lag and crashes in each of their games. I like their games regardless though, I’m even a “fanboy”.

        1. The games are usually well-made.

Just not at launch. I definitely agree here.
Hell, even my Fallout 3 GOTY edition crashes and freezes all the time. Which ruins an otherwise amazing game. That’s okay, though. I have a regular Fallout 3.

          1. LOL! Yeah, my GOTY edition only does it sometimes now. My New Vegas does pretty fine, though. I’m excited at the thought of a Fallout game on the Wii U.

      2. I’m not a die hard nintendo fan boy. But their games are shit. Its just an open world with a huge abundance of boring quests. The games are glitched to shit and badly made

  6. So putting this game on consoles that doesn’t have the power of the PS4 and Xbox 1 will cause them to down scale which they don’t want to do. So, why the heck is this game coming to consoles weaker than the Wii U (PS3 /Xbox 360)? This don’t just sound like some BS, but smells like it to. Oh well! More money for me to keep.

    1. SO THE WIIU DIDNT KCIK ASS AT E3 VS PS4 VISUALLY “””””””””””””2WHAT DOWN GRADE ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT THE SAME MYTHICAL ONE IDIOT HATERS TRIED TO SAY WAS THERE”””””””

LOL DUDE HOW STIUPID DO U LOOK XENPO WIIU UTTERY DESTROYED FF PS4

MARIO KART 8 DESTROYED PS4S SHOWING WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT

      FANBOY MUCH

    2. MARIO KART 8 HD 60 FRAMES X 2 SCREENS

THATS 120 FRAMES AND TWO SEPARATE HD RENDERS UNDER POWERED WHAT???

      1. The resolution probably drops per split screen on MK8 or maybe the framerate takes a small hit. Maybe not.

  7. LOL it’s just a shooter, pretty sure you could make it happen in the WiiU if you wanted to, Bethesda.

  8. Bethesda has NEVER been known as a grfx King lmao… Their games are truly horrible, its just that there really is no other games to directly compete with them that you can compare lol. Ive NEVER payed money for a Bethesda game. They just happen to be the only ones that do the whole big open world thing.

  9. Even Bethesda does release a Wii U game, I for sure won’t be supporting it. I’m getting sick of third parties treating Nintendo fans like groupies. Hopefully there’s more Nintendo only guys like me, you gotta pick n choose who you support.

  10. BUT HURT 3RD PARTY INDUSTRY DICKS SHOWING THERE BIPOLAR AGAIN SCIZO INDUSTRY

WIIU IS GOING TO SELL LIKE CRAZY IT WILL DO A 3DS COMMONSENSE POOR WORLD ECONOMY LACK OF GAMES ETC

GIVE IT TIME BY CHRISTMAS IT SHALL BE ON A ROLL

I DONT WANT MOST OF THERE SHITTY GAMES ANY WAY BUT IF THEY SHOW PROPER SUPPORT IL BUY ITS THAT SIMPLE

EVERYTHING THEY DO WOULD BE MASSIVELY ENHANCED ON WIIU

  11. You know, Beth, if you’re concerned about failing to put a round peg [Read: A port of a game on other systems] into a square hole [Read: the Wii U], then why don’t you do the sensible thing, and carve a square peg [read: make a game suited specifically for the Wii U] instead?
If you’re as good as you obviously believe you are at making games, then the Wii U should pose little challenge to you as far as making a successful IP for the system goes.

  12. LOL @ THE UNDERPOWERED IDIOT FANBOYS IN THIS THREAD AND OTHERS

EXCUSE ME FANTASISTS PS4 GOT ITS ASS KICKED AT E3 BY WIIU LETS KEEP THE THREADS IN REALITY PLEASE

  13. This is bullshit because they’re scaling down Wolf on the PS3 and Xbox 360 compared to the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game. They just don’t want to try something new, and their games are buggy as hell. They’re afraid nobody would buy the game on Wii U cause it’s going to crash and have all sorts of glitches.

It’s sad too because if they decided to use the Wii U as a platform to carry out new Ideas, that could benefit the PS4 and Xbox One too. Whatever, I’m sick and tired of these 3rd party companies backflipping and making all sorts of BS up when it comes to supporting the Wii U, and these lame as sites like IGN who don’t question them further when they say stupid shit.

    1. It drives me to insanity to think that Nintendo doesn’t have any back-up. I mean seriously, what is wrong with people?

  14. I think Nintendo it’s going to have a better year compared to the launch. almost one game every month till december. Anyone could make a list of this?
I mean if they sell at least 1 million of units this year, that could be a sign for third partys to develop for Wiiu.
The next year will be better, too. So it could be like a constant good years for WiiU, they just need to keep coming with first party games.

    1. June – Game & Wario
      August – Pikmin 3
      September – The Wonderful 101
October – The Legend of Zelda WW HD, Sonic Lost World,
November – Donkey Kong Country Returns Tropical Freeze
December – Wii Fit U, Super Mario 3D World

Not a bad line-up of first party games. Plus, Watch Dogs, Batman, Assassin’s Creed 4, and Splinter Cell.

      1. None of those titles are particularly compelling to the average gamer. Hardcore Nintendo fans will love that line-up… Others not so much.

        1. You’re joking, right?
Wonderful 101 is at least 20 hours long and has all of the same hack&slash action that people have come to expect out of action games from Platinum, I can’t count many people[that aren’t haters] who don’t consider DKC a core-oriented platformer, and Sonic: Lost World is one of those few rare truly great Sonic games from all reports and appearances.
Just those three alone are enough for any average gamer.
You’d have to despise Nintendo to not at least give them credit for those, even if you personally wouldn’t buy them.

          1. DKC yes. W101? Sonic? Can’t really say, it doesn’t look good to me, but I’ll gladly be proven wrong. W101? Still on the fence (Just my opinion on them).

            1. Game & Wario will probably get the casual audiences attention, plus Wii Fit U. Those two alone will get enough of the casual audiences attention.

        2. Mario 3D world is extremely compelling , more so than most games. Donkey kong country – compelling , Windwaker HD – compelling , Pikmin 3 – Compelling , W101 – Compelling.

        3. Yeah disagree, The average gamer is going check out Super Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda, The Wonderful 101, Watch Dogs, Splinter Cell, Assassin’s Creed, and Pikmin.

Did the “average” gamer look at Fire Emblem differently? Obviously cause sales of the game were a lot better than previous installments.

And please define “average gamer” Because games like Donkey Kong sell really well to the core and average or “casual gamer”

If you could. can you list some titles the “average” gamer is looking to play?

      2. Thank you sir.
Maybe this are not the “core” games we want to see on the console, but are games that will make sell the console a lot more since launch, and that’s what it’s going to make third party come to WiiU with time.
        There’s a few missing, i think:
        – Deus Ex
        – Rayman Legends

  15. nintendo fanboy yesterday…… who needs bathesda their games suck anyway. today…… yeah bathesda fucking is the shit their games are so good and could really help nintendo!!!!!

          1. That’s one incident (and it was pretty disgraceful on both sides). Nintendo fans on this page hate on companies on a regular occurence when a company decides not to put there game on the Wii U.

        1. Nope I find there games boring, not much a computer gamer, I like video games, and they have way too many bugs. I have a copy of Skyrim that I barely played. I like Naughty Dog, there not my favorite but they make some nice games. There developers I like that are not making games on the Wii U. Even if they make a game still wouldn’t care, I would just as much get a Conspiracy Theory game.

I have the right to think they suck.

          1. I completely disagree. I consider Nintendo, Bethesda, Rockstar, Ubisoft and Valve to be my favourite games companies. I would rank them 1. Nintendo, 2. Valve, 3. Ubisoft, 4. Rockstar and 5. Bethesda. Now consider this; 3 out of 5 of those companies have not announced Wii U (which I have 2 of) support at all so far, yet I am not moaning about the lack of support.

Just like the 3DS, the third-party support will likely come right after Nintendo is out of their first year slump and shows what the console can do. Now, I am not counting on some of the best IPs straight away, so I don’t think GTA V will be on Wii U at first, although I do hope for a port.

Once Ubisoft releases Watch Dogs and some new first-parties come out, like “X” and SSB, the Wii U sales will rocket and then third-party companies will count their potential profits that they missed out on, and start developing for the Wii U, or at least start experimenting with the hardware, after the first 12- 18 months from Wii U launch.

And a side note; Bethesda are not a bad company. I love their games. The stories are set out so you can follow specific ones or go for the main one, the settings are well thought up, if a bit barren. The multi-stranded narratives compliment the verisimilitude settings of the a: post-apocalyptic settings and b: the fantasy era settings. I think their biggest recent issue was Rage, but a lot of people like it, myself included. Brink, stepping on new territory not just for Bethesda but for a lot of shooters (due to the “free running” elements and art styles), shows that stepping on new territory can be worthwhile, even if the game is not widely popular.

        2. Also, you missed my point, they could make games and I would still think they suck and not care if they make games for the Wii U.

    1. Lay off the shrooms.

Bethesda games arent bad, but they dont really help any console.
There are things they could do with the platform, if they tried.

    2. Let’s flip the script. Any 3rd pard exclusive for Nintendo “Lost World s, and former Rayman Legends” its a baby game. Yet the moment Rayman Legends no longer is exclusive to Wii U now Rayman Legends is hardcore.

  16. I don’t think that they will actually make anything for tge wiu u now . They will make games for the other powerfull systems but will later say that ” wii u ain’t that powerful “

  17. Actually don’t care, they make computers games and still can’t get into what they make. I liked Wolfenstein 3D (not the Apple II game) when ID made it…way back in the day, but I am skeptical they won’t screw it up.

  18. Aslong as it is atleast an innovatie or creative shooter they make someday for our holy machine then go on ahead…

But beware, don’t make another typical shooter because our people will not buy it to a satisfactory level…

  19. The Bethesda re-releases Skyrim on Wii U and complains about the sales and stops developing for it because not many people are buying it… I know your game developers… STOP TROLLING THE WII U!!

  20. Isn’t Wolfenstein coming to the PS360? So lazy developer sounds lazy if they can’t get it to work

    1. Yeah, the fact is that the Wii U is more powerful and its easier to develop for than the PS3 and Xbox 360

  21. I could take this shit, if Wolfenstein wouldnt be coming to ps360.
Have a fucking real reason. Was it small user base or you too lazy to learn a new system.
    Lying only hurts yourself.
Could as well pirate your games, since you release them broken, patch them for years, and still havent fixed them.
And pirates are the third most thing that I hate in gaming.

  22. big three are overrated

If its published by Bethesda then okay. If its developed by Bethesda then no thanks, if they wont make sure it doesnt have any problems.

  23. If their idea of Wii U support is same as was on Wii,
I dont think I’ll be buying any more of their games.

  24. lol@everyone bitching at developers who actually want to make money off their games, something which is likely to happen on most platforms besides wiiu/vita…how hard is this to understand?

and wtf is the big deal did bethesda EVER make a nintendo game??

  25. Bethesda Softworks: No plans. We are too lazy to make a game for the Wii U right now. We saw the X trailer, so we’ll admit it’s not about power anymore. We are just focusing on PS4/Xbox1 because that bandwagon seems the safest for now. We should have said that from the start but we forgot. Currently we are wasting our money on a MMO to compete with Square Enix’s FFXIV A.R.R. (Lol) We aren’t even developing it but we’re the publisher so you know how that is… We will wait Nintendo for the game engine X is using or the like. We will notify Ninty after sells pick up, if they want a new IP from us, they should let us use their game engine because the Wii U architecture is much too different from what we’re used to.

  26. The Evil Within is a pure Survival Horror… Just like ZombiU; so that excuse is bullshit.

COD: Black Ops 2, Mass Effect 3, Sniper Elite V2 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution are shooters… Just like Wolfenstein; so that’s bullshit, too.

Darksiders 2 and “X” are open-world RPGs… Just like The Elder Scrolls; again, plain BULLSHIT!

This just fucks me up and makes my blood to boil! JUST FUCKING EXCUSES!

Not a lot of users in the console? Okay, reasonable; BUT WHY THE FUCK DO YOU DEVELOP FOR PS4/XBone, THEN?! ZERO (0) USERS THERE!!

Not a powerful console?! THEN WHY THE FUCK IS YOUR GAME ON PS3/X360?!?! Consoles that are completely aged and less powerful!

Like someone said, I’m disappointed with my Wii U not because of games quality, but because of the 3rd parties…. Well, at least I can still love Ubisoft…

Unfortunately, the developer also had to express its disappointment in a leak of game assets from PSN pre-orders in Europe that have led to the spread of spoilers.
