Masahiro Sakurai has revealed during today’s Smash Bros focussed Nintendo Direct that the game will be launching on the Nintendo 3DS this summer, while the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros will be released in the winter. The Nintendo 3DS version will run at 60 frames per second in stereoscopic 3D.
Smash Bros 3DS Will Arrive This Summer, While Wii U Smash Bros Will Arrive In Winter

just sad
No one will buy the Wii U version now. Fail.
Actually, this is really smart, business-wise. The WiiU version is obviously the superior one and if given a choice most anyone who does own a WiiU will choose it exclusively. But this way, people who would only buy the WiiU version will buy the 3DS version in anticipation as well as the WiiU version later on. Of course this is all hearsay since I have no experience in either market analysis or business. I’m basing this completely on what I have decided as a consumer.
This I’m getting both but if I had to choose one I’ll pick the wii u since I would perfer it in hd
Or, it’ll work in the reverse. The 3DS has a stronger potential for long-term, gradual sales. The Wii U needs a strong, must-have title to get the boon it needs. If they released at the same time, I feel like a lot more people would get the arguably superior Wii U version, and gradually buy the 3DS version when they get enough cash back.
Now, people will just buy the 3DS version first and likely be satisfied enough, instead of the above.
If the Wii U version came first since it’s the bigger and better version, then the 3DS version wouldn’t sell, unless it’s a DK type of thing but Returns came months after the Wii version. Still, the Wii U version is bigger, in HD, and I bet its online is way better, and they’ll announce exclusive modes for it once teh 3DS version is out to not outshine it yet. Nintendo is not stupid, they want both versions to do great.
Fucking sweet!
For 3DS owners……..
It might have helped the Wii U if that version would have been released before the 3DS version. But logic evades Nintendo yet again. Whatever.
That’s not logic evading Nintendo. They need more development time, and they want the game to … You know… Not suck. Therefore, time = better quality.
Logic has evaded YOU.
Maybe so,let’s hope it will be better because of it, but I still believe it would have helped the Wii U if that version came out first.
Doesnt matter people will still buy the wiiu for smashbros regardless..
With mario kart 8 release close to summer it’s better to give these games(smash bros and mario kart) release dates that are apart from each other, plus with Bayonetta and the rest coming later this year, I’m sure they want to give those games the spot light as smash bros can take away that spotlight from the other games.
I would think it’s because development times between the two take longer. the 3ds doesnt take too long to develop on, so i guess it would be easier to release it instead of waiting for something that’s been finished for 6 or 7 months
Hahaha. R.I.P WeakU.
Yeah!
Yeah, because the Wii U has the better version in HD, and have you seen how awful the game looks in the 3DS compared to the Wii U? Also, all of the footage they show 90% of the time is from the WIi U version… I think people think it’s gonna look like that in the 3DS version too…
I had assumed simultaneous release. This seems weird. Plus I have no interest in the 3DS version. It’s a party game, which tend to work best on a home console with four controllers in front of a big tv. That little 3DS screen, I dunno.
omg
Well, I’m guess that my parents must be forced to get me a Christmas present.
Just when you think they will make a good decision…What a bunch of tits…
I find this a terrible business decision.
As someone who loves their 3DS more than their Wii U I’m okay with this.
it nintendo preposly wanted wiiu to fail and piss off wiiu owners. stop this 3ds BS and work with own wiiu.
Calm yourself Gaara!
though it’s going to be released in winter, holiday, gift/present and stuff i would say the reverse it’s a smart business decision but what do we consumers know right! – This Is Gamer, Peace Out
Unless you understand exactly why Nintendo makes the decisions that they do, I suggest you be a little less loud-mouthed.
People are being pretty dumb here. Yes, the Wii U version was always going to take longer to develop. That’s because it will be better. Do you want it to be rubbish? Releasing in holiday season isn’t exactly stupid either.
IKR people areSTILL getting a smash brother game, I for one have been waiting for smashbro handheld since the gameboy adv days so i can not wait for this to come out this summer ^_^
Agreed but trying to lure a few 3 DS owners over to the Wii U would have been a smart move
A few months difference in a release date wouldn’t make any difference in that. The only way to achieve this would be to not have a 3DS version at all – but in my opinion that would have been the dumb business decision.
I think more people want the wii U version more. I’ve seen plenty of people claim to be getting both. I am one of those people. But im glad it’s coming out in winter for the Wii U because I have to buy two copies of the game, one for me and other for my little brother. then i can save up again and get the Wii U version for myself since im the only one who has one and im not living in the house, instead of spending $140 all at once
I think it’s bad for wiiu but in the meantime it could be good. Like “hey you discovered that game and liked it? Come on and see it’s ultimate version!”
This^^
Since tons of people have a 3ds, this is like a demo for them and would consider getting the wiiu version..
Christmas is the reason they are waiting on the wiiu
They better have a lot more then Smash Bro’s and Mario Kart for Wii U between now a Christmas.Plus I have to point out that Donkey Kong was a holiday 2013 release and we did not get it till feb 2014.I think history is very likely to repeat it’s self again with SB.Nintendo better come hard at E3 with some more heavy hitters for Wii U in 2014 because the lack of releases is just getting sad.
They are going to release a smash wii u bundle to sell for on the holiday and more systems will get sold that way that what I believe anyway first one to call it
Releasing the game around christmas is good for the wii u version, stronger chsnce of higher sales.
WHY DO ALL WII U GAMES COME IN WINTER TIME?!?!?!?! It’s like all we have is Mario Kart now, GOD FUCKING DAMN IT!!!!!!!!!
^ this. Swearing, caps lock and all.
Guess I’m getting the 3DS version, and will boot my indie / Mario Kart machine when I’m in the mood to race.
Hopefully this means we get a shit-ton of content and stages on the Wii U version.
I have no real interest in the 3DS version. I’ve always been that way whenever a game came out on both the handheld and the major console. I’ll always choose the major console versions over handhelds. Even though I do like the 3DS.
I don’t really see why this would be a bad move on Nintendo’s part. 3DS owners will play the game first, but I have a hard time believing that anyone would get only the 3DS version, other than maybe a select few people. If anything, many 3DS owners that gets the game may be persuaded to purchase a Wii U once that version launches.
I’ll still be getting both and cant wait for the 3DS version anyway.
Reblogged this on Curiosidades na internet.
I’m getting both but I know that this game was the decision factor of whether or not they would get a Wii U for Smash Bros. With it coming out in the summer and having an exclusive mode why would they even want to get the Wii U version? I know there will be exclusive features to the Wii U version announced in time but this game will hardly be a system seller. The only saving grace will be it is releasing close to the Holiday season. Nintendo should have released them simultaneously this winter. Oh well at least I have a great game to play on my 3DS this summer.
I agree. I was on the fence, but this definitely has me buying the 3DS version. I love my 3DS, so I only needed a nudge.
I actually see the sense in releasing the Wii U version later.
-Coming out nearer to Christmas means the possibility of a Holiday bundle that will include both games in it and the guarantee of the better sales that the Holidays always bring around, which the Wii U needs more.
-It won’t be cannibalizing its own sales by making people choose between two versions that release at the same time.
-It gives them more time to create and stabilize the Wii U specific modes they’ve likely got planned, on top of the Online modes, and to develop whatever inter-connectivity options between the two versions they’ve got planned.
-It gives us, the gamers, time to save up for both games, instead of looking at our wallets, then two games, and forcing us to choose just one version if we’re low on cash, which also means it won’t be competing against its twin on the 3DS on top of whatever other games come out around the same time that close to the Holidays.
-It shows that they’re trying to do both games justice. The Wii U has more assets to work with, so obviously they’ll be working on that version a bit longer to try and make it as good as it can be.

You are all fools. They’re tricking you. You’re buying the same game twice! The only difference is…the stages? oh and a smash run mode?
Nope. The Wii U version will also have more music to choose from, its own exclusive modes, and there’s some sort of undisclosed benefit to owning and connecting the two versions together that they’ll discuss at a later date.
That on top of the better graphics[which I don’t care that much about it, but it bears mentioning] and the fact that one is portable while the other is home console based[though you technically CAN play it on-the-go if you’ve got a place to plug in, thanks to Off-TV play on the gamepad] means it’s not essentially “the same game twice”. It’s two games in the same series with significant differences.
I think this is very risky decision. It could either go really well or really badly. I am really questioning this decision especially in Japan where even more people own a 3DS, where they are much more sensible about money. I don’t see them double dipping and although there are people who will, most people just can’t find a reason to buy two very similar games just for HD graphics.
I can’t, I wanted the Wii U version but I will probably just get the 3DS version now. I personally think it would have been better to release both at the same time, then the Wii U version would obviously sell more being the prettier version. Regardless the 3DS is going to compete with it but I feel releasing the 3DS version earlier could possibly seal the Wii U’s fate.
Clearly Japan has never cared all that much about HD graphics anyway. The problem is the entire world not just Japan, everyone owns a 3DS and barely anyone owns a Wii U. Sadly these are just current facts.
I have a bad feeling this could really backfire on them, even though I do kind of understand why they made this decision. The Wii U really has no games coming out beside MK8.. So they needed something to try to sell during the holidays, as games and consoles see their best sales during those times. I just feel most kids and what not will be getting an Xbox One and PS4 this holiday season simply because of their popularity and no doubt all their friends already have those consoles. You know how kids are, they don’t usually think for themselves and just like to play with their friends, leading them to buy whatever their friend has to play with them.
So I just see most getting the 3DS version and totally skipping the Wii U version.
To make matters worse, these are still just release windows and it looks like either way the 3DS version is coming out first even if they are both delayed further. If the Wii U version gets pushed even further I cannot see that helping at all as I am already very weary of this decision as it is.
Guess we will see in due time. It just seems like people are forgetting there are other systems way more popular than the Wii U right now that will also have games releasing during the holidays.
I guess they are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Either way it probably is a gamble I suppose, Wii U just isn’t doing well anywhere and sadly Nintendo’s own handheld is its biggest competitor.
