Ubisoft CEO Says Wii U Can Only Succeed If It’s Sold At Right Price

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot believes that the Wii U could succeed if it was sold at an enticing price point to consumers. Guillemot says the company made the right step with Mario Kart 8 and he hopes they can do the same with Super Smash Bros Wii U. He also mentioned the game that they have ready for Wii U, but they won’t release it until the machine starts to sell as well as expected.

“Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has warned that the machine can only succeed if the price is right.”

“With Mario Kart, Wii U made one step and we expect with Smash Bros it will also do more. If Nintendo put the right price on the machine then they will probably have a chance to do further.”

“That game is waiting for more machines to be available. We are also waiting for them to achieve more sales so that we can invest more. Because the problem we have with next-gen now here, is that we are seeing less games that are on next-gen and last-gen consoles.”

“Nintendo has to perform this year, otherwise they will have less games. Justifying investing in the machine needs a larger install base.”

    1. Those are more important in think. Look at the vita, it’s the same price as the 3DS and is obviously superior in terms of power and I would even say controls. But the 3ds is still destroying it

      1. Had Watch Dogs released on the Wii U when it released elsewhere, I would have bought it. Early reviews were mostly positive because people were excited to have something to play on PS4/XB1. Later reviews started to notice the game’s warts. Now in 5 months, they want me to pay full price for a game I can get on my PS3 for what will be $40 or less. Sorry, I’ll be playing Bayonetta 2 or Smash Bros.

        1. And Ubi will bitch, complain, and blame the WiiU install not being large enough for the same game that everyone else already bought months later at a more expensive price.

    1. I just wish Reggie unleashes the Fils a Mech and just destroys the third parties.

Ubisoft you delay Rayman Legends to port them to PS3 and XB360 then you delay Watch Dogs Wii U for the other versions of Watch Dogs and you expect your games to sell on Wii U? You guys dont want release your AAA franchises on Wii U and then you want Wii U owners to support you? Well you are dumber than Michael Pachter.

      He would expose Ubisoft!

  1. A $299 system, a $60 AAA game in Mario Kart, a free game download of potentially AAA games (sorry Wii Party U), and a $40 controller for $330 is a pretty compelling value. Even if you’re of the belief that the Wii U should be priced at $200 like similarly powered systems (that don’t have a game pad), if you like Nintendo games and you’re unwilling to spend $330 on this package it’s because you’re poor or cheap, not because it’s priced too high.

  2. I personally don’t understand why publisher or developers say the Wii U need a price drop, it’s cheap compared to the other gaming consoles…

      1. And more importantly, if people can waste $400-500 for a gimped PC in a box for a console that barely offers anything, then what makes Wii U at $300 with a free game and deluxe digital promotion (5 percent digital purchases back) sound more expensive? People are so fucking retarded these days.

  3. No, Nintendo doesn’t have to cut the price of the Wii U, they need 3rd parties like Ubisoft to support the system like they said they would in the beginning.

If Ubisoft would stop skimping on the Wii U and start producing compelling games with features exclusive to the Wii U then the price tag wouldn’t look so high. If any of the 3rd party devs would actually look at the U with respect and innovation, they could come up with tons of ways to use the GamePad that would make their games compelling enough to play on the Wii U instead of the other consoles.

They don’t need a price drop, they need support.

    1. Ubisoft did support the Wii U. They have released more games for the Wii U outside of Nintendo and Activision. And guess what? Sales for most of their games have been poor! Why should they continue supporting something that’s a drain on their revenue?

And don’t give me the “hurrr durrr games are glitchy and buggy” bullshit. Open world games with many random variables always have problems no matter who makes it, and all of their games after AC3 (which had gotten patches) have been stable and actually make use of the gamepad unlike most of Nintendo’s recent offerings.

      1. Listen dude, they didnt support shit. ZombiU flopped because they didnt advertise the game heavily themselves and there won’t be any sequel. Next is delaying Rayman, a fucking completed game, for 9 whole months over the same BS sales excuse they’re using now when Wii U back then sold more than 3 million in the first two months which in their retarded mind said it’s not good enough but whats more fucked up is they decided to delay and port it to the other systems around the same time that those same systems were hyping for GTA5.

Now its Watchdogs, another completed port along with another game or two being held back as their bargaining chip to make fans cave into their BS which its not happening anyway. Now you tell me again, are these fuckers really supporting Wii U or just dicking around it like EA?

        1. I don’t know what you’re smoking, but Zombiu did get good advertising and even a fucking bundle. What hurt it was getting panned by retarded reviewers who tried to treat the game like an fps. Should they have bribed them? I was angry about Rayman. Even the devs were angry. But it got delayed because Wii U sales were underperforming and the only software selling were Nintendo games as usual. You’re not stepping back and considering that they need to make money and they answer to greedy shareholders (much like Nintendo does) who are shortsighted and only want money.

As far as Watch Dogs, how do you know? Official word was that they held off on development so they could finish the other versions and then make it so it isn’t a half-assed port. That alone makes them infinitely better than EA if it turns out to be true.

A game being held back right now is sensible. Marketing is the biggest moneysink for a video game, and them taking the time to market an exclusive Wii U game right now when Smash Bros. is looming is stupid. Why release a game that’ll be overshadowed quickly by a fan favorite that’s guaranteed to move systems thus allowing you a chance to market to a bigger audience?

      2. Yes, Ubisoft supported the system in the beginning with a bunch of shovel ware. Just Dance and Rabbids are not compelling titles my friend and Assassin’s Creed did nothing different to warrant people to buy a Wii U for the 2 games. ZombiU was the only quality title they released that did anything compelling with the system. Then they went and pulled the Rayman Legends crap. Ubi showed the world that they didn’t have faith in the Wii U by pulling Legends exclusivity. Along with the delay of Watch Dogs. Of course Watch Dogs isn’t going to sell millions on the Wii U, everyone already has it on the other systems.

And as far as poor sales? The system itself was struggling, how can you possibly expect your games to sell through the roof when only a few people own the console? Face it, Ubisoft didn’t stay true to their word when they said they supported the Wii U.

        1. I concede rabbids as it was simply made because previous games have sold decently, but just because Just Dance isn’t compelling to you does not magically make it shitty. It has its own following and has always been a high performer on Nintendo systems. And again Your feelings on Assassin’s creed is subjective. Especially since it’s the first time the series has been on a Nintendo home console.

          >And as far as poor sales? The system itself was struggling, how can you possibly expect your games to sell through the roof when only a few people own the console? Face it, Ubisoft didn’t stay true to their word when they said they supported the Wii U.

But don’t you know? The system sold 3 million in the first two months. The problem wasn’t the lack of Wii U owners, but the stereotype that people who buy Nintendo consoles only buy Nintendo games rang true once again. But I suppose having the third most games released for it means they’re not supporting it

          1. I didn’t say Just Dance was a crappy game, I’m saying it wasn’t compelling, like everything else Ubisoft released on the U. ZombiU demonstrated what the GamePad was capable of perfectly, yet that’s the only game they actually implemented these features on.

Regardless of how many consoles were in the market at the time, expecting game sales to sky rocket within 3 months is ridiculous. Yet Ubisoft didn’t waste any time jumping ship. If they had stayed true to the support they said they were giving, then the Wii U would be in better shape. They supported the Wii U with ZombiU for a few months and then bailed. That’s not full support.

Ripping exclusivities away and delaying games is not support.

            1. Again, compelling for you is something completely different for someone else. You need to remember that people of all ages and gender play the Wii U.

Maybe it would have been better if Nintendo was more cooperative. After, not only was the launch rushed, but dev kits were given out on short notice for it so the best thing devs could do was port games that came out a month before it.

Now don’t get me wrong, as Ubisoft has done their fair share of mess ups. However I’m tired of people thinking that third party is the devil and that Nintendo can do no wrong when in fact they’ve made many mistakes in the past and with the Wii U

              1. Compelling is compelling man. Just Dance does nothing to use the unique features of the Wii U to justify purchasing it on Nintendo’s console rather than a PS3 or 360. I’m sure thousands of people love the Just Dance games, my mother-in-law loves them, but that doesn’t make them a compelling title that would push the Wii U sales.

I agree, Nintendo had to rushed the Wii U due to pressure from the share holders. Nintendo is totally at fault when it comes to the performance of the Wii U. Lack of advertising, lack of strong support on the 1st party end, and the fact that they called it a Wii U when they’re dealing with the casual and grandparent crowd from the Wii generation is beyond me. My 20 year old cousin thought it was an add on tablet until he saw the thing at my house last month. Nintendo handled the Wii U arrogantly because they were coming off the immense success of the Wii.

However, if the 3rd party devs supported Nintendo in it’s time of need; the Wii U wouldn’t have struggled so badly. If the 3rd parties didn’t jump ship at the first sign of struggle, Wii U would be more respected today. Yes, Nintendo is behind an entire generation and they’re just now poking their heads into the realm of HD. But this is a company that innovates the way we play games. They are all about experiences, not hardware and graphics. Had 3rd parties respected Nintendo in the beginning, they could be filling the gaps between the amazing 1st party content that takes a long time to craft.

Nintendo was rushed and they handled the Wii U’s launch poorly, however Sony and Microsoft have been in the exact same position and they are still heavily supported by 3rd party devs. I don’t think 3rd party devs are the “devil”, I just wish they would support Nintendo the way they unconditionally support everyone else. I love 3rd party games! I want more of the for my Wii U! I just started playing Assassin’s Creed 4 and I would love for them to release more, especially if the games can run on PS3 or 360. There’s no reason for them to skip Wii U if the games will run on PS3 and 360. AND if they make these games with compelling features exclusive to the Wii U GamePad it would give people a reason to buy their games on the U.

                1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

^All of this right here! I love the idea of some good 3rd party games that interest me. Keywords: ‘good’ & ‘interest me.’ Oh & emphasis on the good part. I don’t want games with missing features or glitches galore. Those are not good games, no matter how great the story and/or graphics might be. If a glitch is going to annoy me every time I play the game, I’d rather not play it at all.

                  1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

In fact, I’ll definitely be waiting at least 2 weeks to a month of Watch_Dogs being out for Wii U before I buy the game. I won’t risk the chances of getting the game & then finding out about some glitches it might have like I had to deal with when I bought Assassin’s Creed 3 & Assassin’s Creed 4 for Wii U.

                    1. Chozodian Emissary

Exactly! No more quick and dirty ports. Take your time and craft something that will run smoothly and uses the GamePad in unique ways. This will cause us to consider the Wii U version over the other console versions.

  4. Price drop at this point solves nothing. You can get a deluxe bundle for $300 (or $30 more for MK8 bundle) PS4 and X1 are almost double Wii U’s price. It’s not the price, it’s the games people are waiting for. Just watch the sales skyrocket this holiday.

  5. Okay it’s already being sold a whole $100 less than it’s competitors. Don’t give us this “Price isn’t low enough” bullshit.

  6. how fucking broke and cheap people are wtf people just want shit for free. you could get a wiiu right now with nintendoland for $200 usd @ nintendo.com wtf!!!

  7. Yea they’ve lost credibility about this, ubisoft has hardly done much to make their games on the WiiU stand out.

  8. xb1 lowered there system $100 but its still not flying off the shelves, prices don’t mean shit. all the bullshit third party ps4 and xb1 titles i could play on my pc with better graphics at a cheaper price. the only games i cant play on pc is nintendo games hence why wiiu is the best buy. everything else is bullshit xb1 and ps4 is nothing but a low-end pc gaming rigs that is not worth the money.

    1. That is the nuts and bolts of it right there… Xbox and PS4 have most of their best if not all available on PC, while Nintendo, the gaming system made by a company exclusively in the gaming business, is also the only one with quality first party content… everyone has a PC… then you can have a nintendo and have everything… that is an angle Nintendo should think about marketing with

    2. If a gaming system doesnt offer great games, then its useless but current generation of gamers and 3rd parties dont see it like that. Its exactly why I fucking hate that other side of the gaming industry and feel more sorry for Nintendo.

  9. I don’t think the Wii U needs a price drop. I really don’t. I don’t even think it needed that first price drop. It was more of a “convenience” thing for people who didn’t already own a Wii U, but it didn’t help the console sell anymore than it did before aside from the initial boost in sales that the Wii U saw for like the first week.

The only thing that will sell the Wii U is games. Another 50 dollar price drop won’t make the Wii U start to push 3DS numbers. I just dpn’t see it. Plus, how could Nintendo justify selling the Wii U at $250 in the US? That’s the same price as the Wii when it first launched!!!

  10. Every time I read the word ubisoft I hate gaming culture a lil bit more.. fuck them who cares they make shit and act like nig gers. Eat a fuckin cock with this shit.

  11. The adult mainstream m rated aaa market is fucking cancer die die die die die die die die die die die

  12. Lol so because Ubi games aren’t selling well on Wii U he thinks holding a family game over Nintendo fan’s head will make them drop the price again? All of the bundles are great deals (coming from someone who bought it before the first price drop and bought the now bundle-option games separately) and honestly as someone who got the Wii U day one the reason I didn’t pick up Ubisoft games but I got NSMBU, etc. is NOT because I only like Mario, it’s because almost all of the Ubi games(like most 3rd party support so far) were/are ports that were buggy and came out well after they released on every other platform. And since I had a 360 and gaming PC if I wanted those games I got them when they first came out. And they clearly haven’t learned their lesson- with Watch_Dogs even if die hard Wii U fans pick it up to support Nintendo by the time it’s finally released a lot of people who maybe had a Wii U as their only “next gen”/new console may have bought a PS4/Xbox One and then why would they still buy it on Wii U? They might even just lose interest in the game altogether, no one really wants to pay $60 for a game months later after EVERYONE else has played it, stopped talking about it and the other versions inevitably cost less…

  13. See it’s this bullshit of third parties not doing their job to support the console. First they don’t do anything to support it, and then they wonder why it’s not selling. Then to make it even worse, they look at other third parties who are doing the same shit of not helping out, and they decide “Well those guys aren’t helping, so how about we not help either”

  14. Hey Ubisoft! No one cares thank you very much!

“Nintendo has to perform this year, otherwise they will have less games. Justifying investing in the machine needs a larger install base.”
Which is why most of the games they showed off at E3 were going to release in 2015,
the Wii u is the 2nd best selling console of the generation, you say you support it yet no new games for it,
And you guys have the worst marketing strategies imaginable.(Still not forgiving you for Rayman Legends.)

  15. Nintendo priced WiiU right out of its’ market. No one is going to buy $350 or even $299 Nintendo console, it’s unexpected. Nintendo needs to understand if it wants to sell home console system that is more that $250 then it needs to be the most advanced console on the market. WiiU needs price cut down to $250.

    1. No it doesnt. $300 with a bundled game or $350 + tax with MK8 bundle with a Wii Remote and exclusive Mario Wheel saving a whooping $100+ is good enough.

Wii U doesnt need a price drop now considering that 2014 will serve more content for Wii U’s worth.

This is just Ubisoft being a fucking two-way douchebags again holding Wii U hostage to make Nintendo cave to satisfy their hypocrisy of “Wii U support” when in fact that they have never done a single favor for Nintendo fans from the beginning. Ubiliars can go fuck themselves and turn into another EA for all we care. 3rd parties now are GARBAGE.

      1. And to think, Nintendo even made the Wii U Pro Controller for them b/c they didn’t like the GamePad

No one will probably even use the Wii U Pro Controller, when the Wii U Gamecube Adapter comes out

  16. im starting to really dislike ubi..maybe there are good explanations for some of their shit recently i dont know.

    1. There is no explanation or business sense involved. This is simply Ubisoft acting like another EA fucking around with Nintendo and its gamers.

They never did shit for Wii U from day one rather than causing hell. I hate them and hope Nintendo buys Capcom so they wouldnt need another selfish faggot 3rd party “supporter” again.

  17. I kind of knew what kind of company they were going to be for nintendo when that rayman thing happened so all the stuff thats been going on since is not really a surprise to me. All this other stuff is just another reminder of that.

  18. French people really should all be put inside a rocket ship headed for the center of the sun. There’d be instant peace and world unity.

    …Okay, Daft Punk can stay.

  19. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

A second article about this. Eh. I’d prefer Iwata any day over this guy. Least Iwata is actually trying to save the Wii U right now, unlike Ubisoft & EA. If they are so worried about sales, just make & ship out a limited number of games. If there is demand for more, make & ship out more. Don’t just send out over 8 million copies then expect them all to sell. It’s like they are practically telling the consumers to either “Buy all of our copies!” or “Fuck you! We’ll take our business elsewhere, losers.” I mean, if you know your games don’t sell on a certain console, release a limited amount of your games on that console for the small percentage that you know will buy the games. Also, release them on the same day, or a few days after, the other versions just in case those same people also own the other consoles. Oh & put a bit more time & money in your damn game testing departments to make sure there aren’t many glitches that will ruin the game for people. And above all else, quit trying to hit a damn annual release date, too. This is why these games end up with so many glitches & need patches that won’t be out for at least 1 month & 2 weeks.

  20. ive about had it with this frog.

i’m a nintendo guy, but generally keep away from bashing 3rd party devs. they should be allowed to make games for whomever they want. for whatever reason they want. they’re trying to profit, like any corp, and far be it from me to assume i have the first idea about what the best way to do that is.

but THIS guy? seriously? ok, yves, we GET it. no more wii u games. sucks, but whatevs, i can deal. NOW SHUT UP. to incessantly hang your face out there talking about “what it would take” to bring your company’s product to market is just purely antagonistic at best, flat-out insulting at worst. you run your company, let nintendo run theirs. you can daydream all day about what a wii u or a maytag dishwasher or a rolls royce phantom “should” cost, but WHO EFFING CARES. it’s like a conitinual stream of nintendo bait from dude’s mouth.
jeez louise, at least EA hangs back and shuts up about shutting ninty out.

  21. oh shut up guillemot

you have lost every right to make suggestions concerning another companies marketing or business strategies

    1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Exactly since his clearly suck. But I know there are idiots here that will defend them for their shitty business tactics. After all, screwing over the small Wii U install base is what’s “best for business.” So sick & tired of hearing that cop out. So much for business ethics, eh.
