Nintendo Officially Leaves The Brazilian Gaming Market

It’s a sad day for those of you from Brazil as Nintendo has announced that it is leaving the Brazilian video game market. Basically that means no more official games consoles, handhelds or video games in the country. Nintendo is apparently blaming the reason for the exit on high taxes, but that seems to be just one part of the problem. Nintendo has yet to say what will happen to the Brazilian eShop and what it means for people who purchased games on it.

Thanks, Roberto

            1. Too bad for you brazilians, that means you can go back to exploring your jungles instead. And also you’ll have more time to solve your extremely high crime and poverty.

                1. There’s nothing offensive about a jungle. I think they’re awesome. And I’m jealous of the acai berries you have. As well as the sacred ayahuasca.

                  1. I don’t see problems in jungles, I even don’t know much about them. I live in a polluted city, but many people insult us saying that we are monkeys living in jungles, that’s so irritating.. And I also don’t know what are acai berries and ayahuasca, if they are from amazônia, it’s far, far away from where I live.

                    1. Acai is a berry that only grows in brazil I believe. Ayahuasca is a sacred drink that shamans make in the amazon that essentially makes you have a deep spiritual trip. I have lots of respect for them even though they aren’t modernized (respect them more for that actually).

              1. Hahahaha that was funny fat brain. How’s mama? She’s still on da fast food? And the door? Can she pass through it o0o?

    1. My company also sells software into Brazil, and getting payment out of the country with the controls they have in place is a major struggle. I absolutely understand why Nintendo had to pull out.

      1. They must of thought it was less profitable to do business in the country rather than let there be a import and piracy market.

    1. Isnt that what most brazilians do anyways? I mean, most brazilians I have talked to always tell me that they import from NA or stock up in games whenever they visit the states.

      1. The xbox one is the cheapest console here, because microsoft have a better relantionship with our government, they manage to avoid many taxes (nothing illegal, just complicated rules). Nintendo never ever tried to work it’s way around the system.
I paid 1.500 BRL for my wii u. At the time that was worth 638 dollars (the same value it’s worth only 555 dollars today). But the normal price of a Wii U is 1.800 BRL (765 dollars at the time, 650 dollars now).
An xbox one can easily be found for 1.300 BRL. That’s worth $472 today.

        1. I paid 1079 BRL for my WiiU a couple months before the holidays on 2014 (the version with Nintendo Land and New SMB U). I don’t know if you buy on physical stores/retailers, but I always buy through internet and the WiiU price base was always cheaper than PS4 or XBone, far as I could see. The gray market is a good option to get things cheaper than on the main retailers, although not always very safe. Looks like it will be the definitive option from now on, but I’m concerned about the high demand and lack of accessibility.

          1. Yes. I was talking about retail stores only. If you buy an imported console it will reflect the price difference from the US.

        2. Wow. All of my friends paid nothing more than 1200 BRL for their Wii U. Everywhere I see the Xbox One and the PS4 are more expensive than the Wii U. What happens is that almost every store here in Brazil doesn’t care about Nintendo. And Nintendo itself also doesn’t care this much about Brazil since ever. XD

          1. I paid 1230, maybe they’re saying the prices from wallmart or thos big, big stores.
Nintendo doesn’t care much about Brazil since the over of Gradiente.

    1. No way man. Are you high or something? The Wii U is 200 Reais cheaper than the Xbox One and a LOT cheaper than PS4.

  1. I definitely wasn’t expecting that, but their taxes are awful so I can’t blame Nintendo either. Probably saving them money by doing so.

  2. My dreams of getting a Wii U are ruined…

…oh well, it’s not like I was going to get it so soon anyways.

  3. God damit Nintendo¡ You need to expand your market, not reduce it. If it is because of taxes, why not open an office, warehouse and distribution centers’ of your own to deal with central and south america and reduce costs, not only for you as a company but for consumers as well?

  4. It doesn’t change much though. The only difference is that we will no longer see their consoles on retail stores. Most people buy it imported illegally from other countries anyway.
And we use the canadian eShop to buy cheaper games.

  5. Well… I’m from br, and must say that our goverment is ridiculous … A ps4 and xone is cheaper than a wiiU…. The games for 3ds and wiiU is sold at extremely high prices…srry my poor english =\ but my future New3ds and wiiU may not be bought =\ …..

    1. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

The only hole the American continents will ever see is the hole off the main Xbot base blown to oblivion…

      1. I'm a Boss Ass Bitch

Nope. Not all Americans play Xbox. Its more Sony and Nintendo over here. The xbone is just popular than Wii u right now

        1. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

          That’s what I said…

Once the Xbots are all destroyed, most true gamers shall witness the only thing left from them, the Hole of Oblivion…

    1. Not really, our politicians still see video games as something that is bad for you. They’re probably glad nintendo left.

    2. never the Brazilian government considers all video games gambling, so then they put a tax of 120% on all video games, so that would make, smash bros Wii U cost around $123 american dollars. That is why my Brazilian cousin bought all of the game systems and game he wanted, in the US so it wouldn’t cost him double the amount he wanted to spend.

      1. Wait a sec… I’m a Sonypony… I’m not an Xbot And I live on America… OT: Sorry this happened to you guys. Hopefully you can still get games and consoles someplace. ZeldaU is going to be amazing.

  6. For fuck sake Nintendo. Another PR disaster. What is it that they can’t do anything right? Yes I get the taxes issue. Find a solution, you don’t just abandon your customers like that.

      1. Grow up you immature retard! I’m sick of reading your childish dribble here every day. You’re an embarrassment to Nintendo, gaming and your family. Elite Commander? Pfft… it might be funny if it wasn’t so sad. Do you run around in a cape with those initials on it? You pathetic human being.

        1. Take it easy on ’em. This is all he has. Instead help me convince him that it’s not as scary as he thinks “out there”. You can do it Nintendo Commander!

  8. It’s basically this: If you want to make money on Brazil, you have to first bring money here. Microsoft did and they couldn’t be happier. All nintendo did (since gamecube) was put their consoles on our retail stores and hope it sells.

    1. but you also gotta think, microsoft is a swissblade army knife, they pretty much have alot access, where nintendo can’t do to much. they are just game company. I don’t fully understand Brazil, but since the law sounds anti gaming, nintendo doesn’t sound like they could do much

      1. Yeah, but nintendo used to do a good job in the SNES era.
Well, kinda. It was a brazilian company doing all the job for nintendo at that time.

    1. That’s what I’m going to do when I return to Brazil. This works for those who really want to play their games. The average consumer, however, will not buy from Nintendo if they don’t see their products in retailers.

  9. Leaving? Nintendo never has been here. Never translated a single game game to brazilian portuguese, 3ds and Wii U games cost more than PS and Xbox games, Brazilians can’t sign Nintendo Club and his technical support here is bad.

Sony and Microsoft have way better technical suppport, prices and you can sign PSN+ and Xbox Live in Brazil.

    1. It takes 2 months to bring a game from the US and they charge you with a tax that is around 70% of the value of the game plus a lot of fees.

      1. That sucks, I’ve only once had ton pay a fee ordering to Sweden, I’ve ordered hundreds of times from the US, China and Japan.

    2. You can’t if you already own the system, it’s region locked.
You can only play games in their relative region, otherwise they don’t work

  10. This catastrophe is blame mafia that governs the country, meet the PT, the socialist party of brasil, the party of Dilma Rousseff

  11. The government is to blame. Our extremely incompetent president Dilma Roussef has managed to, in only 4 years, bring back inflation, devalue the most important company in the country (Petrobras), nearly break our economy, drive investors away, let the dollar rise over 60%, corruption spread all over the place, etc.

The saddest part? Brazilian people re-elected her. We have at least 4 more years of suffering ahead of us…

    1. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

Sounds just like Sweden, the difference is that they did the opposite way that lead us to this idiotic state we are in now…

    2. It’s not like there was any better candidate this time. Dilma was pretty bad, but there was no guarantee Aecio could be any better. Let’s just be glad that it was not Marina who won.

      1. I agree with you that no candidate was really worth it, but with new people in there, maybe trust could start being rebuilt. If they somehow attracted back the investors, things would begin going back to normal. Inflation would drop and or economy would react positively. It would take years to undo all the wrongdoings PT has done, but we would finally start breathing more freely.

  12. That’s not what it said! It said they are ending it in it’s current form. I am sure they will put something else in place once they figure it all out.

      1. Not quite. They are ending the deal for the current distributor for Brazil, but they have future plans for Brazil is what they said. They will have to figure out a better setup for their.

    1. I doubt it sooooo much. Nintendo says this since Wii U first arrived here about the eShop and everything…. and until today we still have nothing.

  14. So what? Brazil won’t have any Wii U games for sale? I don’t understand the impact of this news on me (I’m Brazilian). Anyone please explain??

    1. It’s not gone. I survived for years buying from non-official Nintendo importers. For me, Nintendo had never that importance in Brazil because they never did too much here. Ever.

      1. I would join too but I only have the 3DS version at the moment. But anyways, good luck to you. You’re gonna need it. :P

        1. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

I don’t need luck in Smash Brothers as I’ve played it like 10000 times more than Mario Kart or any other multiplayer Nintendo game…

        2. Ridley, the Angel of Death

Too bad Sakurai didn’t think about cross-play, eh? Oh well. He probably would have given some bullshit excuse as to why not. *cough*noplayableRidley*cough*

          1. I feel as though Sakurai tricked me. It seemed like he was working really hard and that he was putting a lot of effort into the game and I had faith in him. …And then the game basically came out as Brawl 2.0. Hell, I actually feel as if I had more fun with Brawl to be honest. He scrapped the whole goddamn story mode as well as some fan favorites like Wolf and Lucas. And he also gave very little changes to some of the characters like Ganondorf. I’m still questioning why the hell he pulls a sword out if he doesn’t actually use it. Lmao.

            1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

From what I’ve heard, Ganondorf remains mostly unchanged because apparently Sakurai’s favorite character to use IS Ganondorf, so apparently he doesn’t like the idea of having to relearn how to use the character.

      2. Yo Nintendo Commander? What’s your Nintendo Network ID? It would give me pleasure to fight it out with someone who I enjoy seeing on My Nintendo News. Plus, it’d be interesting to see who you play as.

  15. The problem with Nintendo is that they never like to be wrong. If in the future the situation improves in Brazil, they will likely not enter back into that market just to defend their original decision.

  16. Everyone knows that Brazil have one of higher taxes in the world so why Nintendo don’t does what Sony and Microsoft does? Sony and Microsoft produces their games here (BR) but Nintendo import their games from USA (or where the games are produced) because that the price of the games of Wii U and 3DS are higher (just a little but higher).
The government wants investment in Brazil but Nintendo don’t want to expend money with employment (and other things like buildings marketing).
If Nintendo produce their games here in Brazil (and send to all the America Latina) this scenario certainly would change.

  18. Its a shame really. Especially with the Rio Olympics coming in hot, that could’ve been brilliant advertising for them.

  19. Pfff, no more Fire Emblem for me then ;-; ok, just let me go to that corner and cry.
Btw, what’s going to happen to those who own the SSB4? Will they be able to continue to play online?
Anyway, can just hope they will be back eventually…

    1. I just don’t think they’ll do anything that’s taxable. So I imagine their online services should remain up (though if digital purchases are taxed, they may block Brazil from the eshop) and since the Americas are all considered one region, you should still be fine to import games from neighboring countries using your own means.

      1. L-Let me dream ;-; but yeah, I figure I’ll have to import the games at some point.
I think the Brazilian eshop is taxed too, because a friend of mine said the Canadian one is cheaper. I’m just afraid that Nintendo games are going to become even more pricey now for me. And more complicated to acquire.
Also, having Nintendo outright say they are abandoning the Brazilan market feels terrible. I’ve always liked this company because their exclusives are fun.
Sigh, it’s time to chase after the Nintendo games I wanted to buy later this year, I suppose. Get ready for the NintepocalypseBR (omg, I’m terrible at this ;p)

        1. Well, one thing I know about customs is they tend to only tax new products, because its the big corporations they are trying to make money from. If you open a product and then import it, usually it isn’t taxed, since it could essentially just be considered someone’s property with no plans to distribute it (or its at least a lot easier to get into the country). I guess I’m saying if it’s true that the tax is as high as they say, you could import used or opened copies for much, much less. Of course, until we know what happens with the eshop, there is no knowing if you would be cut off from DLC/software updates…

It really sucks for Brazil that this is happening. But we still love you guys even if Nintendo doesn’t! Haha

  22. MAN, couldn’t they just release the New 3DS first, sell a few and then do this? Brazilians are always getting fucked up everywhere, we never get the good stuff. I just wanted a nice official with warranty system. sake where do I buy one now? Uruguay and Paraguay, AGAIN? I thought those days were over.

Thank you Nintendo you crushed my soul here. Thank you very much. Really, just… thank you.

  23. I have lived in Brazil, attempted to do business there, speak Portuguese, etc. I remember seeing the Sega Dreamcast on a store shelf in Brazil for R$799 when it was selling for $99 in the US. There were “arcades” were someone had a bunch of PS1’s and N64s setup in a small room for kids to play(well, this was back in 2003ish) and markets selling tons of pirated games. It is a tough market to do some legitimate business in for a product like this

On Nintendo’s reason, they are not incorrect/lying about it. Brazil currently has a very protectionist mentality which makes it very difficult for any outside business to work there. High taxes and tariffs, lots of bureaucracy and regulative hoops they have to jump through, etc. I know there is a vending machine company based in the US which has been trying to break into the market there but they are finding it almost pointless due to these factors. Of course it is designed that way to get these results, it is just rare to hear anyone in Brazil articulating that (the guy who lost their last presidential election started the make the case at the end but it wasn’t enough). Of course what the pols that keep the protectionist racket going don’t seem to care about/realize is that a Brazilian video game company like Zeebo just doesn’t cut it since they can’t offer the quality that Nintendo does.

  24. that sucks and i dont blame them for leaving since the government there are parasites for wanting to line their pockets with money by implementing high taxes on everything, including breathing.

    1. forgot to mention that its hard for nintendo to even do business and sell their products to places where its harder for for them to get their products in their homes cuz of places like these and because of crime. like i said i dont blame them and i also wont blame gaming companies to leave cuz its hard for them to sell their products

  26. Nintendo was already a bit upset with us. On the last time they came to the Brasil Game Show (our biggest event of games) some youtubers gathered some people in front of the Nintendo’s stand and started screaming (Nintendo Wii U, vai tomar no c* [Free transaltion: Nintendo Wii U, go fuck yourself ]), since that year Nintendo has never been here anymore.

If we talk about producing their games here it’s not profitable for Nintendo if you analyze the market here. Sony and Microsoft already have others type of products here, but Nintendo only sells consoles and games. It would take a lot of effort to prdouce their games here compared to Sony and Microsoft, and with the market of games here, they would never have a good profit.

Brazil has to me blamed, but if the people here don’t change we will neverget Nintendo back.
Sorry, my english is terrible, but I hope you all understand my point.

  28. Ive visited and lived in brazil, I was shocked at the prices of Nintendo goods, even the cheaper stuff smuggled in from Paraguay and Uruguay was expensive.

This isn’t nintendos fault, it’s the Brazilian politics.. If they used taxes correctly then they wouldn’t need to tax video games.

  29. It sucks for Nintendo but its fucked up of them to pull out now. these tax problems have been there from the get-go and a decision like this isnt made over night, they knew something like this would happened so its fucked up of them to let it happend. They shouldnt even have released the Wii U in the first place, now those who bought a wii u are left without future software support, great going Nintendo.

  31. Nintendo is leaving Brazil because of the same reasons of why Sony sells an $1800 USD PS4 over here. Besides having humongous taxes, Brazil also have one of the biggest profit margin in the world, mostly because of the obsession with premium products from the brazillian people. This model was unsustainable for Nintendo (that used a distribution company called Gaming do Brasil as their representant) here, since it would force Nintendo to raise the prices of their products at very expensive numbers in order to assure the profit.

  32. If I lived in Brazil, I’d be dead after reading this post. I guess there really is some benefits about living in the US.

      1. Eh, well, most PS and Xbox games I want almost always get a PC version and become available via the (Almighty I must say) Steam, and their exclusives don’t interest me enough to make me buy an insanely expensive system just for that. Nintendo on the other hand, has the exclusives I really like (Zelda, Fire Emblem, Bravely Default, some Shin megami tensei games, Pokemon, Xenoblade, Super Smash Bros. They also seem to have more JRPG’s than others systems right now, so it’s more worth for me who likes this kind of game.) I am not going to pay R$1.899,90+R$90-200 to play just one game and then leave that to gather dust :s
Buuuut yeah, dying for that is kinda…overkill! (pffffff terrible pun <3)

    1. Ofc oO It’s not like it’ll be illegal to have Nintendo stuff in Brazil…just a bit harder to get, and maybe more pricey. Pretty sure some stores might even import the games themselves to sell here.
