Christian Whitehead Says Sonic Can Be As Great As Any High-Quality Nintendo Platformer

We have been hard at work relaying to you details from a Polygon interview where past and present SEGA figures recalled the history of the Sonic franchise. Sonic’s past, present and future were all brought into the spotlight. One figure in particular, Christian Whitehead, had some Nintendo-related remarks to share.

If you don’t know who Christian “Taxman” Whitehead is, he was the creator of the “Retro Engine”. Whitehead was hired by SEGA to use the engine to create revamped ports of Sonic 1, Sonic 2 and Sonic CD. In the interview, he explains that it’s a “pretty tough task” for Sonic to be as big a game like Grand Theft Auto. However, he states that with the “right mindset behind it”, Sonic still has the capability to be as great as “any high-quality platformer Nintendo is currently putting out”.

  1. If you’ve got a good development team. then it is possible, but considering SEGA doesn’t even know what to do with Sonic, another ‘Sonic Boom’ is inevitable.

  2. 🎭Mr. Boss Ass Bitch💊

Yeah with nintendo driving the fucking wheel. Otherwise it’ll always and forever be utter shit. I Liked shadow the hedgehog though

  3. He is of course right, and trust me, Christian Whitehead is a man who knows what he’s talking about it when it comes to quality. I highly recommend his iOS ports of Sonic 1 and 2 – that’s how you take a classic and move it to the modern day.

  4. Wait, really? A game series which had games which competed with Mario in the 90s, can possibly have games which compete with Mario now?!

Don’t see how this should be news to anyone. : p (Heck, it’s true for pretty much any game series if the developer is good enough.)

    1. That was back when platforming was restricted to 2-D gameplay. Sonic’s transition to 3-D hasn’t exactly been as graceful as Mario’s; although there were some pretty good 3-D Sonic titles.

  5. Can be, but besides different gameplay we’d also need a different writer for a story. The one we have right now is great for writing episodes of a cartoon, but not necessarily for a game.

  6. Yes Sonic does have the potential but with the people that have currently worked on sonic need to fucking grow up and stop making sonic some retarded pussy ass child…Sonic’s supposed to be cool and cocky but with a heart for justice, also a smart ass, and that is what sonic fans loved…”blady mc nose hair” whoever put that shit in the skit needs to be fired like yesterday…anyway sonic can be great like he used to be SEGA just get ur head out ur ass and start listening to the fucking fans cause we’re the one buying the damn games…

  7. I think he can be on par in terms of quality. As far as better goes, I’m not too sure. And if Whitehead is talking about 3D platformers, Sonic can be just as good. I’d say the better bar to set for a really good platformer would be Banjo Kazooie. I don’t think there will ever be a 3D platformer that even remotely comes close to the Banjo titles.

  8. Key word here is “Can”. Can he be better than the legendary Mario? Yep! Will he? Not a chance in hell. He needs to get his reputation back before people can even compare him to a Nintendo mascot. After a few good games he may have a fighting chance.

~*Of course Sonic can be as good if not better than Mario. Sonic games just need better developers. But as some said, till Sega pulls their head out of their ass, Sonic won’t ever be on the same level as Mario for awhile.*~
