Nintendo have informed games developers that their anti-piracy measures for the 3DS are extremely sophisticated.
Ian Curran, THQ’s executive Vice President of Global Publishing, has been informed that the piracy prevention methods for the Nintendo 3DS are extremely sophisticated in comparison to the Nintendo DS.
“The problem with the DS market in the last few years, particularly with the DS Lite, is that it’s just been attacked by piracy. It’s made it almost impossible to shift any significant volume. The DSi combated it a little bit, but the 3DS has taken that a step further. I actually asked Nintendo to explain the technology and they said it’s very difficult to do so because it’s so sophisticated.”
– Ian Curran, THQ

Calling it now: 3DS shocks you when it detects pirated games.
The only reason they didn’t explain it to him is because he was too dumb.
I’m sorry but THQ DS games aren’t even worth pirating… My little Pony and half-assed movie games? I’m sooo sure that piracy is the reason these games aren’t selling. Idiots.
XD I know lol bunch of idoitsi hate movie games
It will show you a 3D image that will quite literally scare you do death. If you play a pirated game.
…That doesn’t sound sophisticated at all.
coolio
It’s easy. Since you need 2 eyes to see the 3D effects, anyone wearing an eye patch won’t be able to see it. End of piracy! :)

Bravo!
I think I love you.
About time they step up they game and but an end to piracy, i know its bad to hate piracy but you have to support the developers in some way. This way they’ll make a lot more money anyway. Well done nintendo :D
I’m pretty sure that bowser that torched Reggie in the E3 video is the anti-piracy measure.
Lawl THQ Games? Really?
Clearly, Nintendo fails at poker (Maybe that’s why we have no Nintendo Poker World Tour game).
Guys, I’m telling you right now. Listen up. This, is the biggest bluff I’ve ever seen a company make, in my entire life. “It’s too complicated to explain.” Bull. Particle Theorem isn’t “too complicated to explain”.
They just don’t want to explain their new methods (which will probably be obsolete 6 months prior to 3DS’ release), because they don’t want hackers in the know. They know it’s inevitable. Therefore, all they can do is keep information like this hidden from the public.
I’m not supporting piracy, but realistically, the 3DS will inevitably get hacked, no matter what Nintendo does. Every single Nintendo console to date has been hacked and/or emulated in some shape or form. 3DS isn’t going to change that.
“I’m not supporting piracy, but realistically, the 3DS will inevitably get hacked, no matter what Nintendo does.”
Unfortunately, I second this statement. However, perhaps what they meant was that hacking it would be so hard to do that not many people would do it? I know nothing of pirating games, so I don’t know how easily spread hacks are once exploited, but could there be something about each individual 3DS which is slightly different that makes it unique, and would prevent a hack from working on another 3DS without being modified for that specific unit?
i agree, in the age of technology anything, and everything can be hacked to some degree sadly…..
Possibly you are right. And you are right if we look at the history of piracy on nintendo consoles. But i can think of many reasons that makes it hard for piracy on the 3DS.
1. Upgrades to the system that you cant turn down. Even if you try to turn of the wifi it will find it´s way out on the internet via hotspots/home networks /mcdonalds etc. And eventually upgrade and destroy the latest cracks.
2. and of course the usual, really really tough algorithms and a format that is hard to copy. (much like the Sony Ps3)
3. but most of all. A big catalog of downloadable demo-games, so that we all get the chance to try the games before we buy. That puts the pressure on the shovel ware makers.
oooh thats why you have to update the ps3 alot (very clever sony)
What I think:
The ROMs give computers BSoDs!
Well what if you don’t have Windows :)
The anti-piracy could be the sheer size some of those roms will be on a 3DS flash cart.
@Fook – Forced Updates won’t happen. Remember when they tried to brick one of the major hacks on Wii with a system update? It took out a good number of non-hacked Wiis. They’d be stupid to try to do that with 3DS.
@SWIFT – impossible. DS games these days can go up to 256 MB cartridges, which may make 3DS’s initial max cartridge size of 2GB seem big, but people have been downloading a lot more for a long time. If I’m not mistaken, PSP games can go up to 2GB. Furthemore, Wii games are easily hosted, and referencing the first Dual-layer Disc game, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it’s about 8.5 GB. Size, it seems, is not an issue for pirates.
Look, I live at Ecuador, Latin America. I took my Wii to be repair at the “bahías” and I saw people that can hardly read openning, installing hard-drives, drivers, hacking the consoles with no problem at all.
In short, if a paid genius can do it, an appasionate one can un do it faster!
found your site on del.icio.us today and really liked it.. i bookmarked it and will be back to check it out some more later
I bet a the Supercard DS2 team could utilize the processoer in it to emulate the original game and it would work
Could someone tell me whether R4s work on the 3DS
