Nintendo: Nintendo Confirm That They Have No Plans For A Nintendo Branded Smart Phone

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has told news publication CNN that the company has no desire to enter the smart phone market and instead will stick with traditional hand-held gaming consoles.

“We have no desire to get into telephony,” Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said. “We believe that we will earn our way into someone’s pocket without having to offer that (phone capability) as an additional factor.”

“We don’t want to be in the phone business,” Fils-Aime said. “We don’t see that as an opportunity. Phones are utilities. Phones are not by definition entertainment devices.”

“It makes sense to enter a market when you feel you’ve got some sort of competitive advantage,” Fils-Aime said. “From Nintendo’s perspective, we don’t see that we have a competitive advantage in telephony.”

“It’s not that I’m uninterested,” Konno said through a translator. “However, I look at the business model, and I see so many additional costs that come into play.” Splitting revenue with cell operators would affect the retail price of games, he said.

“Would we increase the price of the software itself?” Konno asked. “The distribution couldn’t be free.”

  1. Good. I already have a mobile as I’m sure most people do anyway and I only ever use it for calls and text because I like the battery to last. I do realise that a lot of people would like everything in one device i.e. an awesome Nintenphone, but I’d rather Nintendo stick to game and console production because it is what they are best at and I wouldn’t want them to try to add in expensive extras bumping up the price, especially because we don’t know even know how well it’d work.

I think that the DS and Wii both primarily being gaming consoles and not having many extra phone or media capabilities hasn’t gone against them. It would appear that from sales alone people aren’t so bothered about potential extras and are happy to have a device that simply plays games.

  2. Nintendo-branded smartphone? Sounds as dopey as the facebook phone, don’t you think? Maybe mobile app, then that sounds crazy… but maybe crazy enough to work, like “New Super Mario Bros.”, perhaps. But others like the 3D platformer games won’t be easily ported… unless you compromise the quality of the games.

    1. “tele-phony”. I like Reggie’s jab at the phone gaming industry. Time to hear the angry bird’s response.

  3. finally someone who doesnt want the 3ds to be a phone, some people think a phonr is an entertainment device, it isn’t and a console isn’t a phone,

  4. a smart phone from nintendo would be a bad idea… at the same time smart phones are killing there industry. what they need to do is make the video chat better and have an instant messanger on there divices and that will cover communications without it being a smat phone… but apple already has them beat with the ipad
