Never one to mince his words Sony CEO Jack Tretton has launched a scathing attack directed towards the Nintendo DS and the Nintendo 3DS claiming the handhelds are literally meant for small children and that anyone above 20 should be ashamed to own one. Are you embarrassed about owning one of these consoles or is Jack Tretton spouting a load of nonsense?

Im 21 and would not really consider buying any of the new nintendo hand helds because they are marketed towards children. (Although I bought the original DS when it came out and owned multiple Game Boys prior)

most of the games on iPhone are worth playing for only like a few hours, most of the time you end up deleting it cause there’s nothing more you can get from the game, where as the games on Wii/PS3/360/PSP/DS/PC/Mac you can actually go back and play cause there is more content and stuff

Haha, typical! Having worked in game retail, the PSP was actually a complete embarrassment compared to the DS. It would have one wall bay compared to the DS’s four. There’s room in the market for both more mature and more child-friendly games, unfortunately Sony completely fails at the latter…

whats this guys problem, i’ve been playing handhelds since the gameboy color, anyway when i was at the palisades mall i saw only adults (20-40 years of age maybe 18 and 19 and a few kids and teens) playing the 3ds, i saw no psp’s there, hmmm. a reason is because the suck, every year i go camping and it’s a 6 hour drive, what am i gonna do for 6 hours, talk, how bout this, i play my DS (well now i have a 3ds so this summer it’s gonna be a 3ds) and have some freindly competition with my brother and friends.

The best part of their motion rip off is how the motion controllers each cost $40, when you can only play about maybe 2 decent non sports simulators with it. Oh! And don’t forget the, what, $50 capture camera packaged seperatley? Hooray! :D
I can atleast respect the Xbox360 motion system as they did something new like Nintendo did, by making it no controller at all, AND by packaging it with their new console upgrade.. Sony did not however.
Bitter much Sony? Theres a reason why I have 3 DSes and a 3DS in my house that get a good deal of uses and a PSP that barely gets used. And I’m part of the 20-something crowd and I’m proud that I’ve been a Nintendo handheld gamer since the GameBoy days.
The funny thing is that in my high school during my last years there, there was a hallway where the handheld gamers gathered and it was filled with DSes and only a lone PSP showed up the odd day or two and was aptly called the DS Hallway.

i have to disagree with the comments of Sony dying the the Video Game race. While I have always been a Nintendo “fanboy”, it’s always been because of the handhelds. GBA, DS, DSiXL; those have all given me endless hours of fun. While most the games aren’t targeted toward a mature audience, a lot of them are still solid titles, but I wouldn’t say that it should be embarrassing for older fans to enjoy these games.
I’ll make a comparison Family Movies, those are usually always marketed toward children, but 20+ year olds still go see them. Why? Because, generally, those are the better, more entertaining movies. Why does growing up mean you have to enjoy nonsensical cursing, blood, sex, nudity, and crude, and sometimes immoral, humor which all warrant the Pg-13 or R rating, when the majority of these movies are just really bad? If you don’t get what I mean by this analogy, I’m comparing DS to Family Movies, and PSP to PG-13/R movies.
Now, while I stand firm that DS is way better than PSP, and I believe that if Sony doesn’t get it together, the 3DS will be way better than the NGP, I still have to say: In the home console department, Nintendo is facing issues too. If you look at the income for the The Big 3, they’ll go like this Wii>PS3>Xbox; if you look at units sold, it goes like this Wii>Xbox>PS3. The PS3 only outsold Xbox because it was still more expensive than Xbox and Wii, but, the Xbox still sold much more units. The amount of units sold matters much, much more. But, the Wii, while great, I personally never was able to love it like I did my PS2. The PS2 was, honestly, the greatest console to be released, except maybe N64. It fueled so many great games, that the truth is, the console is still selling itself and hardware quite well, plus, there are, while few, still games coming out on it. In is my opinion that PS3’s leap into technology is was ruined it, developers were still getting used to the tech on Xbox 360, and also, the consumers just weren’t ready to pay $800 for a gaming machine. Much to expensive. We have seen this already though, the PS3 has been picking up at a good rate, and is selling much better exclusive titles than the 360, which is to me a shooter-galore, plus Xbox Live abuses customers. In Japan, the 2nd biggest place for gaming,, the 360 is a flop. At the end of this console war, I believe the PS3 will be on par with the Wii, as the Wii has been lacking as of late, and really has only been selling IPs, with very few 3rd Part y titles.
I’m quite proud of my DS Lite and 3DS, thank you, Sony. Shut up and make a real handheld before you talk

I have both the 3DS and DSi because I like them. I also have an NES, SNES, N64, GameBoy Advance SP, and a Wii. Everyone who know me knows i love video games whether it’s a Nintendo, Microsoft or Sony product. I’m 30 years old and can agree with someone who has a different opinion than you if I want. Just like you’re entitled to your opinion. One more thing: you’re right about the 3DS being a waste of money so early on. They really need some AAA first-party titles.

You go try to look cool with an NGP in public, playing it alone… I’ll go play Mario Kart or Resident Evil or Street Fighter with my number of friends who have or are soon getting a 3DS.
They’re no single minded fans either, but about 15 of them have the DS, while only one has a PSP that collects dust. It had fun titles and I have nothing against it, But throwing in 3G and a gps won’t make your games more fun, and it won’t replace your cell phone.

I’m 28, and I plan on getting a 3ds when it actually releases GOOD games. I’m looking forward to starfox, zelda ocarnia, super Mario, and hopefully a 3d castlevania. Castlevania was the reason I bought the gameboy color, and original ds. I never realized how addictive the super Mario games would be until I tried it on the ds, and I was hooked. It just offers something different that Sony hasn’t grasped.
Granted, I can’t stand games like pokemon, so I see what Sony is getting at. Nintendo does have more of a children fan base.

Conclusion: there are good ‘mature’ games on nintendo handhelds and mario and the like isn’t aimed at kids alone. Bashing is never a good strategy, it sounds desperate, which means nintendo is doing very well…
It’s a shame that the gaming has become so competitive. It’s almost as bad as two fans of opposing sports team spewing words back and forth for years. People like Rovio are simply pathetic to think they are “above” every other developer out there, especially ones that help form the exact industry he claims to take a part in. The people who can really make that claim are the consumers. The fans and average taxpayers who spend our hard earned cash for gaming devices and add-ons for enjoyment.
That’s what it boils down to. Nintendo may not be on the same pedestal as it was many years ago, but they focus on what is important. Making fun, innovative, and above all…enjoyable games. I don’t care if a game has high-end graphics, simplistic plot lines, or intense and epic fights. If the game is not enjoyable, it is a waste of time and money. Jack Tretton can let loose any insult he wants. There will always be people who buy Nintendo consoles and games because they know what is fun to them. Look at Pokemon…a game that has been through a lot of adaptions since the Gameboy era. I have played every generation since the game was first introduced. I am 19 now, and although many would agree that the game is not targeted for the “hardcore” audience, and notice I put that in quotes, it is a game that I IMMENSELY enjoy playing. And when I had to pay for the game with my own money, I can safely say that it was well worth my cash.
I’m 24 and I have no trouble at all in being seen with my DS. You’re never too old for games.
Also Jack Tretton should remember that some of the games like Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts are available for both PSP and DS.
Wow Sony. There are frickin plenty of games for adults. Tom Clancy series, Street Fighter series, upcoming: Resident Evil series, Metal Gear series, ect. that have/will soon have games on 3DS.

i own a ds & a psp… ds is def geared towards children but they also put effort in it for the adults too! I love my ds & my psp for lots of reasons. people don’t need to bash either company… just the singke person talking smack. None of theses companies r going to fail & go bankrupt, n they all have great systems each with their pros n cons. i have a ps3, & i am getting a wii soon so i can play some good games with my baby boy… but i def. will be getting some games on the wii for me too. my ds lite will in fact go to my son & i will be getting a 3ds for us to share. but i will always love my ps3 & my psp… my son would break the psp though-not because of crappy quality-because of what it has-no lcd screen can handle a little kid lol. Everyone needs to be thankful that any of the systems & their companies have come so far & has been so successful.

What an idiot that JackOff is. I used to say my console is better than yours in the MegaDrive/SNES days. I loved my original DS, then my DS lite and love my DSi, at 35 I’m loving my new 3DS. You need to stand up Jack when you talk because it’s quite muffled when your seated as you talk out of your arse!
Well, I’m 30, own every Nintendo device made, minus the Virtual Boy. I love my 3DS, my DSi, DS Lite, DS, Wii, Gamecube, Game Boy color, N64, Game Boy, SNES, and NES. Yes, I am a fanboy. Yes, my children love the Nintendo products. But for Sony to say I should be “ashamed” is ridiculous. Everyone I know with a DSi/3DS are adults. The graphics are amazing on the 3DS. Sony stole the Wii-Mote sensors from Nintendo and now they’re mad that Nintendo figured out 3D w/o glasses, first. I love some of the “aimed for younger aged” games, but Nintendo also got their hands on some super titles for the 3DS, as well. Lay your weapons down, Sony, apologize, and tell Nintendo that their best.
I thought I saw sense in what he was saying for a bit, but then I realised: Nintendo has titles like mario that are universal, and they have touch generations software like nintendogs, brain training, and Wii Fit that everyone uses. Therefore it’s kinda acceptable to be seen playing those games. And whilst the psp may have more – I don’t know, shooters? It’s not like a 20 year old would want to be seen playing that in public either. At the end of the day, some peopel simply wouldnt want to be seen playing games in public, I get embarassed just playing iOS games on an iPod so i’m never going to bring my DSi or 3DS with me to play. But if I did, it’ doesn’t look as chunky and technological as a psp would, and if being seen playing a handheld is a problem, i’d rather be seen playing a DS than a PSP.
I think this is one of those statements that firms can make from the top easily, but not actually being the consumer, they get things completely wrong.
Basically, If I dont want to be seen playing a DS in public, it’s because I don’t want to be seen playing any game in public, and if anything the PSP is worse in comparison. Like I said, because of the touch generations and stuff, more older people own a DS, so it’s more socially acceptable.
You know, I love My Nintendo News because I’ve been a Nintendo fanboy since my first NES way back in the way back. But the level of fanboyism/fangirlism here is astounding. Go ahead and let the Sony fanboys have their say, people. We can sit back and marvel at the difference in grasp of sentence structure and use of profanity.
I’m not going to say that, when it comes to portables, the Sony fans have a point: two analog control nipples does mean a great leap forward in portable FPS. The new Sony portable (I can’t bring myself to call it, or anything else, by that idiotic name Sony has given it) will probably have some good ones. It will also be more powerful than the 3Ds. The touchpad on the back seems like a pretty neat (if gimmicky) addition, and is a surprising touch from a game console company whose primary means of innovation seems to be just making the most powerful box on the market. I’m willing to give credit where it’s due.
Of course, Nintendo has shown that a single analog control and a motion control might be the most awesome first person control setup in history (Metroid Prime: Corruption, anyone?). And, of course, mouse-and-keyboard allows for much more accurate and twitch-responsive control than analog controls. And the clamshell design of the DS has given us a portable that doesn’t look like ass every time you pull it out, and having a touch control on the back of your portable system just gives you one more outward place to smudge and/or damage.
I’m sure that the greater power of the hardware and the dual control sticks will be the big deal ffor the new generation of portable hardware. It won’t have anything to do with names like Zelda, Metroid, Mario, or Pokemon. Sony will, of course, beat Nintendo into the ground with its higher priced hardware and by requiring you to download every game you play, since it’ll be better for one genre of game.

I personaly think nintendo handheld can be for all ages but if they say that its only for kids
ley them there are more kids than adults kid play more beacause they dont have a job adults do

OK…….ds is directed for kids……but with the 3DS Nintendo is finally stepping up to more adult-like gaming but they should still leave easy access to childish games Nintendo started the major gaming platforming, PlayStation came YEARS after Nintendo did and Xbox came YEARS after PlayStation…..has anyone noticed that Microsoft has not said anything bad about Nintendo . they know that it is going to be a serious challenge to out-do Nintendo especially since Nintendo is almost always the first to come out with the newest gaming ideas….OK credit to PlayStation they were the first to come out with the CD-ROM aspect and credit to Microsoft they were the fist to come up with the no controller motion control aspect but Nintendo was first for handheld device,3D,3D handhelds,multi-game interchangeable cartridges,first console to have 3D graphics (N64),first motion control gaming system, etc.

It’s comments like that which will keep me from buying the new Sony handheld. I’m 32 and proud to be a 3DS owner not to mention DS, DSi, DSi XL, Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Advance SP, Micro, and yes the Virtual Boy. I am however not so proud to own a PSP anymore.
This guy is just talking smack because he is scared that the Sony handheld won’t be able to stack up against the 3DS.
