Nintendo Wii U: Nintendo President Says Wii U Price Will Probably Be Over $250

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has told Bloomberg that he expect the Wii U price will be over $250 when it makes it début next year. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime told Gametrailers yesterday that the console will be competitively priced against Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3. Is $250+ too expensive?

  1. If he’s worried about it being over 250 than i’m not worried at all. The 360 and ps3 were dancing between 400 and 600 dollars, and that was without getting a touchscreen/handheld/non-portable “controller” with it. Nintendo’s stock took a nose dive but I haven’t heard one person explain what they wasnt provided that they were expecting. 3rd Party support, 1st Party support, HD visuals, normal controller (it has all the standard buttons, you will play complex shooters like BF3 and Metro:LL on it) a touch screen streaming innovation…it’s all there. Nintendo innovated again (not what people expected) and provided evidence of 3rd party support, HD visuals, and better internet presence to compete with other systems. I’d like to know what people expected that wasn’t provided honestly. Now, price doesn’t even that insane. It’s all good people!

  2. Yeah, somewhere like $300 means that its £200 for us in the UK, I payed £170 for the Wii so a little more than that would be fine, considering the mess of awesome additions the Wii U has. Its the games I hope stay reasonable at around $45-60 (£30-40) considering the new discs they will be using and such.

Ah well I am sure I will be getting this thing anyway :P

  3. Do you know how much was the PlayStation 3 here in Chile? About $1700 (when it was preorder). Wii was about $530, and you say $250-300 is expensive? xDDDDD!!! I would LOVE Wii U costs $250 or even a little more. Seriously. I would love that ;___;…

  4. Even at $400 the “U” would be priced appropriately, because its even better than the PS3 or the XBox 360. Let’s be realistic.

  5. Well I think $250 (£153, more likely £180/£200 when taxes import added etc) is very well priced so I would not expect it to be released at this price.

As said previously $400 and under is a good and fair price. Anyone that expects it to sell for less then this and complains about the graphics not being much better then the PS3 is just expecting far too much.

@ Anonymous. Your absolutely right. What were they expecting from Nintendo. Very strong 3rd party support. Good amount of RnD seems to have gone into this.

Also I was very skeptical about the Wii U branding for the next console but thinking more about it, it makes perfect sense. Like the Game Boy brand, people are already very familiar with the Wii now so they will be able to access all this very easily with a great sense of familiarity. Using the Wii accessories is also a great idea. It means people will already have 3/4 controllers already to play these great multi player games with the need for further expense.

  6. $250 is the maximum price expected for the wii u. $199 or $200 would’ve been ideal too. but anything over $300 would be just too costly.

and the fact you can do so much with this controller, even the controller alone would’ve cost a lot of money itself. so therefore, it’s reasonable.

  7. Well I paid £180 for Wii, £280 for 360 and £200 for 3DS so I will be willing to pay anywhere up to £300 for this console.

  8. It needs to be competitive with the current price of the 360 and ps3 not what they were when they launched.

250-300 and I’ll get one. Over 300 and I’ll wait a year or two.

I was wanting to see the Mario 64 type title though never did.

  9. How can you complain about it being over $250? The xbox at its lowest launched at $299 and that’s as slow as i would expect. $300-$350 would be a realistic price considering the power and the technology.

  10. Of course it’s going to be over $250, the Wii cost $250 at launch! And this system supports vastly more complex innerworkings and controller. $350 is on the money, that’s my guess. Heck, if this thing is $500, I’d still buy it.

  11. I can see it being $250. It is an odd price considering that the 3DS was that price. I wouldn’t be too surprised if $250 was like the price of the console and the Wii U controller being sold separately. Together I would’ve put it at more like $300-$350, prices that are realistic and still friendly enough.

At $250 the Wii U would sale like iced tea on a Georgia summer. Especially with a potentially great launch. It’s like they looked at the 3DS and said “You know…let’s not do that again. Let’s put effort into the launch titles and actually push those games.”

  12. Hmm. Just how worrying that fact is depends on the appeal of the console. I foresee no trouble if they have an awesome set of launch titles and some better demonstrations of the Wii U waiting for us… although my wallet cries at the idea of a price over $ 300. Can we keep it around that? :P

  13. i will think 300 bucks will b awsome 250 i dont think so wii was 250 come on people take away 250 away from u mind

  14. $350 to $400, but it better have one of the new controllers. Perhaps offer a bundle without the new controller for the $300 price point?

  15. Well, provided they have the launch titles to back it up, I think anywhere in the 300-350 range should work. I mean, people are willing to pay this much for an iPhone or iPad, right? It also needs a few bundle packs. Marketing is key to this whole project. We’ll see how things turn out.

  16. The thing is, it’s set up to support the Wii peripherals, and while the tablet is technically the “standard” controller, the Wii controllers are intended to be used alongside it.

I think what a lot of people don’t realise is that gaming has always been a very niche thing, and through the Wii Nintendo have opened the doors for all of these new gamers to come in. The Wii was essentially a nice way to lead them by the hand and show them how fun gaming can be and how it can appeal to them as well. By playing Wii Sports and Wii Fit they may pick up a new Mario game and realise how fun it is and then buy more games. The Wii U continues that idea, but ups the ante and adds in much needed “core” support. The chances are a good deal of the people who bought a Wii might be very tempted to get this lovely new upgrade as a way of furthering their entertainment. “Hey the Wii was fun, maybe this new Wii will be fun as well!”

After all “casual” gamers aren’t as wowed by the technical bells and whistles; they just want to have fun.

  17. No way is that too expensive! People had such an adverse reaction to the 3DS costing $250 because it was a portable, but $250 is incredibly cheap by new console standards. By this logic, console makers should never make another console again because it would be more expensive than the previous generation.

Remember that $249.99 was the launch price of the Wii, and people couldn’t believe how cheap it was compared to the $299.99 Xbox 360 (and that’s the basic model) and the $599.99 PS3. If anything, I’d absolutely believe Reggie when he says the Wii U will cost more than the 3DS.

  18. Stay at $250? LOL. That’s too damn cheap. I don’t think that a new console will go for that price. I’m expecting $300-$400

  19. the contorls is the most expsine of any system contorl and the consle it all seams like 2 diffent systems thats gona cost 400 bucks for standerd but ill pay 350 400 but for the top of the line system if theres differnt verisons im only gona get it for the nentendo games i just got a free wii the other day and all 3ed party games suck i really only get it for zelda and mario other than that na

  22. I paid 220 euro for my Wii here in Bulgaria for the basic bundle (console + one wii remote + one nunchuck). I am willing to pay about 300 euro for the U, but more would be too costly for me (I’m average customer). Bad thing is electronics here always come overpriced, so for example 300 USD console will cost about 500 euro here :/

  23. the only reason id buy it is for the new metriod game they’ve been talking about and pikmin 3, mario is so past dead he’s a zombie he wont ever die
