Nintendo Wii U: Nintendo Of America President Reggie Fils-Aime Talks Wii U Online

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime was recently invited to talk to Forbes about the Wii U and what it will offer gamers. During the interview Reggie conceded that Nintendo hasn’t delivered the best online experience in the past, but it’s working extremely hard with third party developers to deliver what consumers want from an online network with Wii U. What would you personally like to see?

Your online services are very different than what your competitors offer. Isn’t something missing, that you can’t offer the sort of experience I can get on Xbox Live?

I don’t think it is an issue for us, and here’s why. We’ve seen what our competitors have done, and we’ve acknowledged that we need to do more online, starting with the launch of our eShop on Nintendo 3DS, and we’re going to continue to build our online capability. For Wii U, we’re going to take that one step further, and what we’re doing is creating a much more flexible system that will allow the best approaches by independent publishers to come to bear. So instead of a situation where a publisher has their own network and wants that to be the predominant platform, and having arguments with platform holders, we’re going to welcome that. We’re going to welcome that from the best and the brightest of the third party publishers.

Would it be reasonable to expect there might be a new or significantly upgraded online presence when the new console comes out?

We’ve said that the Wii U will have an extremely robust online experience. There will be other publishers talking about that as well, and from our perspective, we think it’s much more compelling for that information to come from the publishers than to come from us.

  1. Really don’t like Fils-Aime, he’s the reason Mother never left Japan, and the reason Americans aren’t getting the “Big Three” RPGs on Wii

    1. He’s just one person. These decisions are made by the entirety of Nintendo of America, not just Fils-Aime.

    2. There would have been legal issues. Trust me, I love the Mother series as much as the next guy, but you have to look at it through Nintendo’s eyes.

    3. Actually, he’s part of the reason why a lot of games DID come to the States, why the DS and Wii were successful, and why Nintendo is being less stubborn than in the past with 3rd parties. Remember, he wanted to do a Zelda bundle and Nintendo of Japan said no. He still has people above him in Japan, even if he’s the President here. He’s a really nice guy in person. If NOA ends up bringing those 3 games to the U.S. (which isn’t 100% known yet), there might be a great reason legally, financially, etc. that they can’t publicly talk about. I doubt it’s the “Nintendo hates us and wants to punish us” conspiracy that everyone seems to think is happening. :)

    4. The reason Mother 1 didn’t make it to America was the manufacturing cost of the cartridges and because the SNES was right around the corner. Mother 3 wasn’t very successful in Japan, so they didn’t want to risk it for North America.

  2. Just do some thing like Xbox Live and stop messing about. Let us pick a gamertag not have shitty friend codes. Let’s be able to see what our friends are playing and not have to put the same game in to just see if any one is playing it. Let’s have some sort of rewards scheme for games. Let’s have some games for playing online!!! The eShop, which is pretty lame at the minute, is like the shop channel but just in a different colour. Sort it out Nintendo, you are allowed to copy other companies, besides they copy you enough!

    1. 3DS let’s you pick a name along with your fc which is like a gamertag, 3DS shows you what your friends are playing, The games do have rewards and achievements, honestly I see nothing wrong with the eshop. You get on, look for a game you want, buy it, play it, the end. Features your talking about are already there. What should be there on 3ds is chat and messaging, ability to have a online profile and look at others profiles and for gods sake please let us add ppl when we run into them. It’s so stupid to play with someone online and can’t add them afterwards.

      1. I agree mate with your comment, I was just commenting on the news that sickr had put up.
