Nintendo 3DS: Gamestop Says Sales Of Nintendo 3DS Have Risen Dramatically Since Price Drop

American retail chain Gamestop has told GamesIndustry.Biz that sales for the Nintendo 3DS have risen dramatically since Nintendo implemented the price cut on August 12th. Gamestop president Tony Bartel told investors last night that he’s extremely encouraged by the growth in hardware.

“We have seen a significant acceleration in the sale of PlayStation 3 and the 3DS,” he said. “So we do expect for there to be an increase.

“Although these were not unexpected price decreases or price reductions that we had projected, obviously, the 3DS was somewhat larger than what we had anticipated. But we do see that will spark demand in the third and the fourth quarter.”

“That is a good barometer for what is going to take place in terms of the installed base.”

    1. WTF? You sound like such a fanboy…jeez. Sony doesn’t deserve your money? So what you’re friends with the folks at Nintendo? Dude..no one cares…Sony & Nintendo are both multinational big corporations who only care about 1 thing: your wallet. Hell, the guys Sony are better at giving customers what they need…like a decent FREE online service for both their consoles. BETTER third-party support.

      1. The only reason why they have “better” third-party support, is that their first party games… SUCK. If you’re a third party delvoper, and you look at Nintendo’s first party games and Sony’s first party games, which are you going to choose? The company that will overshadow you’re game, or the company that will glorify your game?

        1. I prefer Nintendo, but I have a PS3 and a Wii. They are both good. How about you actually own a PS3 before making judgements then pick coke or pepsi and leave it alone.

        2. And also I find your message much more fitting if you slip “Microsoft” in every spot you used the word “Sony”

      2. Well, I ain’t a fanboy, but I honestly would rather choose Nintendo over Sony mostly due to how they treat their customers and their form of respect. Sony’s… a bit on the arrogant-side. They hardly ever apologize if something goes wrong with their products, they constantly say they’ll beat the competition easily, and they love to bash on other companies.
Nintendo hardly supported 3rd parties mostly due to their philosophy of products… often trying to make things more family-friendly, but wanting to balance – yet too scared to dip more into the core-side of gaming for fear of negative cultural change (examples are in cheap-to-free games’ quality, FPS-only-core-gamers, 13-year-old-cussers-online, and the whiny-people-of-the-internet).
It sucks for us on the customer end, but it’s at least understandable.

Nintendo may be after my wallet, but at least they’re following by a standard I’d agree with.

Also, look up both their histories… Sony’s backstabbed Nintendo more than once when they tried working together…

Sony’s life Microsoft, if Microsoft were more openly arrogant.
Don’t get me wrong, I love my PS3 and PSP games, but I do NOT like the heads of Sony one bit due to their attitude. …I support Nintendo’s heads over Sony’s any day.

        1. Also if you bring up the “arrogance of Nintendo” with their 3DS original price rise… that isn’t arrogance, that’s a business move. It’s called “demand”. You raise price when demand is high. They associated wow-factor with demand. A bit of a gamble on their part, but understandable.

Sony rose their original price for several of their products, and no one complained other than “I can’t afford it, oh well” or “There’s NO WAY I’m buying one for that price”. Nintendo does it, everyone says they’re arrogant.

Also, 3DS price drop was apologized for, which wasn’t necessary, and 20 free games that accumulate for more than $100 worth was promised.

PS3’s price drop wasn’t apologized for, and that Playstation Plus (with Playstation Rewards) was given… for $4 a month…….

    1. Yeah! Who needs competition in the market?

Let Sony and Microsoft die so Nintendo will have no incentive to produce new and better games! I, for one, wouldn’t mind if Nintendo re-released every classic game for full price each time with no update or new features.
      [/sarcasm]

      1. There aren’t many games of quality. Ocarina of Time is good but many of us have already played through that multiple times. I bought it for the 3DS out of respect for the franchise. But besides that, I can’t name a single title that derserved to be bought at full price…..even if I have bought a few. within the next year there will be several good games though. so atleast they are a few steps ahead of the Vita. (Which also needs a considerable price drop to compete in the market)

        1. Just wait. :) Games are coming! Oh and check out Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D. I rented it ad it is awesome! It’s fun playing online co-op too.

          1. I rented it on Gamefly right when it came out. Not going to put that much time into a mini game that leaves out the best character….. I know games are coming, but this shouldnt be a problem Nintendo should have had. Lack of quality games. Makes me fear what the Wii U lineup will look like it it wont have Zelda or SSB…….the only thing left is Mario really….. Excited about the system, not the launch though…..3ds all over again? I hope not :(

            NintendoPower!

    1. Personally, I have yet to see any games on the PS3 worth a second glance. There’s nothing interesting on that system.

      1. LittleBigPlanet, Heavy Rain, God of War III, 3D Dot Game Heroes, inFAMOUS, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank Future, Heavenly Sword, Killzone 3. And those are just exclusives for the PS3, not including multi-platform HD games not on the Wii.

There is something on this system for everyone, and if you don’t see that then you aren’t giving it a sporting chance.

        1. Played those games before I thought they were absolute crap. That’s why I traded in my ps3 last week. PS3 sucks

        2. PS3 is a good system, but you could make a list like that for any system. Fanboyness takes over if you dislike ALL of those PS3 games or if you dislike ALL of Nintendo’s. I hated Dot Game Heros, Rachet and CLank, Heavenly Sword, Resistance(u skipped) and Killzone. But I bought my PS3 for Metal Gear Solid 4…..a game that wouldnt run on ANY other console at the time. :)

And the Wii U more powerful than the PS3 (a system that never fully used its power anyways?) is definitely something to be excited for :)

Can’t we all just love Video Games together?

except Platstation Portables and Xbox……they have no need to be around

          1. I don’t know, I got a lot of enjoyment out of my PSP, and the PSVita is looking pretty cool, not as cool as the 3DS but we haven’t seen many games for it yet. As for XBox, yeah there is no point unless you are a big Halo or Gears fan.

            1. yeah…..its why the PC I bought can game…..anything Xbox can do, I can do better. But PSP games just kind of failed on me…..the only thing that could get me on the Vita is maybe a portable Fallout or Infamous title. :)
But I love allll Zelda’s, really enjoy mario game. Love Love Love Pokemon. SO portable wise…..I might always side with nintendo because of their exclusives….

              Halo remastered?

been around for us PC gamers for free for years……ummm…Microsoft loves to rip off and screw over…..

        3. LBP2 was awesome. Never played Heavy rain. I didn’t like GOW3 (Gears? o.o), Is Dot Heroes the Zelda mimic?, inFamous was good for the first couple hours. Never played the rest. PS3 has a pretty good selection, but I got my PS3 more as a media player than for games. I guess you could say I’m more of a casual gamer. :)

    2. I agree PS3 is actually pretty good, I like Sony and all. BUT I can’t stand it when they have to try and bash Nintendo for no reason because they think they’re so freaking superior, them and MS I know we all laughed when they said they had better first party games than Nintendo.

But yea PS3-despite the cockiness of the company behind it- is a pretty good system, I’ve been trying to get one for 2 years since price cut but I’m failing :( lol.

    3. Why are you comparing a handheld to a console? The 3DS is still fairly new; games will come. PS3’s been around for years now.

    4. “…at least it has games unlike the 3DS”

Are you really comparing the games library of a console that has been out for years to one that’s been out for, what, several months? If the PS3 DIDN’T “have games” by now then I would be very worried indeed!

The 3DS IS suffering a bit on the games side at the moment, but it’s understandable that it wouldn’t have as many as a system that’s been out a lot longer.

    5. I’m not sure why you’re comparing a 6-year-old console to a (not even) 6-month-old handheld. Once the 3DS is out for six years, then try comparing the number of games to the current (not in 6 years) number of games for PS3

      1. Post like this

“i’d rather buy 3 3DS’s then one PS3. sony doesn’t deserve my money. they deserve bankruptcy.”

Which when I posted this before the reply storm came in was all anyone above me was saying, and I was wondering why they were praising the 3DS over the PS3, especially since they aren’t even the same type of gaming device.

  1. Yay! It’s sad that Nintendo had to cut the price but I’m glad there will be more Streetpassers in my neighborhood!

    1. People won’t miss out though, those who bought the 3DS at the original price will get up to 20 virtual console games free.
And since the price drop, the sales have gone through the roof, so Nintendo aren’t out of the competition by a landslide.
It’s Playstation we should be worried about, people weren’t willing to pay £229 for the 3Ds in the UK, so why would the PSvita charge more?

  2. Sony copies nintendo all the time they made ps move so they could get popular! nintendo is better because they are original sure sony has some okay games and nintendo has a lot of great games mostly first party I mean really they even copied halo!! With kill zone sony is horrible and stupid NINTENDO FOR THE WIN!!

  3. Ok im a huge nintendo fan and this is stellar news but to say that there is nothing on the PS3 is simply trolling by fanboys. I know this is a nintendo site, but come on. I could name at least 20 games for the PS3 that are incredible and not available elsewhere! not a huge sony fan at all but the PS3 has some great titles on it. Uncharted, Little Big Planet, Resistance, God of War, even the HD remakes are great. come on , be fair guys

    1. Very true, I mean, I know I can spend at least a day playing PS3 games with friends. Nintendo has a more personal and infinite feel to it though

    2. I agree Sony is good but one of those things you said HD remakes, why is it that when Nintendo makes a few remakes on a new system Sony fanboys bash them. And not even a few Nintendo has like oot and sf643D that’s it and possibly MM but fanboys are all like “o they should rename 3DS n643D”.

But fanboys will be fanboys so w.e, not saying you are.

      1. That’s the same thing I have been wondering…I have a ps3,wii and 3ds and they all have remakes on them and ps3 has more than 3ds (so far) the god of war collection, the 2 god of wars for ps3, the sly collection, ico shadow of the collossus even microsoft is starting to do it with halo and these games sell well so obviously there is a market for them and apparently this market doesn’t get on YouTube, gametrailers, ign etc and cry about it

  4. Wow just look at all these freaking trolls who wont give sony a chance. I say long live Sony, and keep ’em coming :D

  5. I am definetely a Nintendo fan girl but it doesn’t mean i don’t give sony a chance? i like my ps3 and the games it has to offer but to be honest it’s not too durable like nintendo hardware. i dropped my remote ONCE and it broke! and just the cost of accesories and stuff are way expensive. =\ if the wii u can have good quality, low prices and what sony and microsoft have + more i will be a happy gamer. =)

  7. I’ve played ps2, never ps3, and the only games that interest me on the playstation games is the Kingdom Hearts series, look, no Kingdomh Hearts for ps3, how long has that rumor been around? I’ve also played both x-box systems, and one word people, one word. Multiplayer. X-box doesn’t do much for strong single player games, a lot of them are fps and multiplayer, online multiplayer. I’ve also played the psp, not that impressed. It was when all I had was a gba, and that’s what it’s target was, right. Then the DS came out, and Sony thought they could defeat the ds with the psp. Once the ds lived out it’s life, the 3ds came, and NOW Sony is feeling threatened, I would’ve have felt theartened by the ds, and actually, seeing the speculation, it looks like the ps Vita is going to “rival” the Wii U. Ps4 isn’t that far away, but it will be too late. Sony fans hate now, but when Sony isn’t providing anything “fresh” they’ll move back to Nintendo. Once a Ninty fan, always a Ninty fan.

  8. man all u bitches on here need to GROW UP!!!!! and stop playin mario and little baby games and start playing games that r more mature……………unless u still want to act like a little frekin kid

    1. Mature doesn’t always mean shooters with uninspiring characters who do nothing but curse and scowl. Mature can also mean depressing and dark moods, a la Super Paper Mario. I heard from a friend that it was a really sad game that stirred a lot of emotions in him. AND he’s 17.

Mario isn’t regulated for kids. There is something in it for everyone, like the PS3.
