Nintendo Kicks Ass In Wii Balance Board Patent Suit, Warns “Patent Trolls” Not To Sue

Nintendo of America has issued a press statement to say that for the third consecutive time this year, Nintendo has prevailed in a patent litigation in the U.S. A Maryland U.S. District Court judge has summarily dismissed a patent infringement lawsuit against Nintendo brought by IA Labs. IA Labs had alleged that the Wii Balance Board accessory and Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus software infringed on one of its patents.

“Nintendo has a passionate tradition of developing innovative products while respecting the intellectual property rights of others. We vigorously defend patent lawsuits when we firmly believe that we have not infringed another party’s patent. We refuse to succumb to patent trolls.”

– Rick Flamm, Nintendo of America’s senior vice president of Legal & General Counsel.

  1. Patent Trolls? I guess “troll” is the next cuss word of the 20th Century as F*@K has lost all its meaning and power. Nice one Big N.

    1. Troll of the 20th century? Are you talking about those troll dolls with the weird hair? I didn’t realize the term troll was that applicable before 2000.

        1. @nkutzler: Wikipedia is generally reliable; more credible than many sites. You’re just ignorant and are only perpetuating the misconception of Wikipedia.

  2. Haha, they said “trolls.” Never knew officials irl would use the term to describe individuals from the internet.

  3. You people really don’t know what “patent trolls” are? They’re people or companies that create patents and let them idle, and then sue whoever makes a similar device.

This is the internet age, pretty much everyone knows what a “troll” is. Go to Joystiq or 4chan if you want to see real forum trolls.

  5. Just waiting to hear something about how Xbox next and PS next have touchscreens on their controllers.

  6. This headline made me laugh, and I love the statement! Another reason why Nintendo is superior to Sony (in my opinion)

  7. Nintendo nailed their ass to the wall. Trolls of all kinds should know by now that you can’t troll Nintendo.

  8. Flamm is flaming!

Sorry, I had to say it…

    Btw, good for Nintendo. :)

Sorry for the double post, clicked on post before I could put my name. XD

  9. “patent trolls” haha that pretty much sums it up. Ever since the Wii and DS got so popular, Nintendo has been fighting all of those companies claiming royalties and stuff from those systems. There would be credibility if to some of them if they were scarce, but there have been a lot of them trying to get a small piece of it, and some of them are just dumb (Like the patent that got filed in 2009 or 2010 and then Nintendo got sued later on even though the Wii had been out for a good 3 years already).

  11. When history is looked upon, one quote must be preserved as an indication of our times:

“We refuse to succumb to patent trolls”

This could not be any more relevant today.

    Somebody archive this.
