Analysts such as Michael Pachter generally bring doom and gloom to the table when they’re talking about Nintendo’s forthcoming Wii U console. Thankfully this isn’t the case with Ted Pollak of Jon Peddie Research, who has shrugged off Nintendo’s critics and claims that the Wii U will do just fine.
“This is a recurring theme. Technology changes and Nintendo looks like they are falling behind. Nintendo always claims their focus is on game play. However they actually have a smart technology strategy that most people don’t detect.”
“To understand this, we need to go back in time a little. The original Wii was designed for standard definition televisions, and when released, there were ninety eight standard definition TV households for every high definition TV household. Now we are faced with fantastic and powerful consoles coming from Sony and Microsoft that will drive high frame rates for 1080p resolution and much higher for 3D. However, if we look at the installed base of HD televisions globally, we may find a very large portion of them are 720p, as those displays were the first adopted and the first discounted.”
“So for many people, the new Sony and Microsoft offerings may be an overkill for their current television capability,” Pollak noted. “Combine this with Nintendo’s proven game play quality, the unique tablet controller, and NFC technology that goes hand in hand with their IP, and I think Nintendo will do just fine with Wii U.” Pollak doesn’t think it’s an automatic success for Nintendo, though. “That said, they must have a solid launch slate of titles and all online features enabled from the get-go, or they will face the same stumbling start that the 3DS experienced.”
now this is refreshing! Wii U POWER|!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IVE GOT 700 GAMES AND I THINK NINTEDO HAS TAKEN IT UP A NOTCH
wise words. This is an analyst who actually looks at the bigger picture. Good on him. Can the man be promoted please?
Agreed
Awww I thought Pachter had changed his mind again :/
Finally, an analyst who isn’t spewing nonsense.
Yeah, this guy actually used legitimate reasons.
If somebody says stuff that you want to hear, then that counts as legitimate reasons?
Huh, news to me.
umm no pleasant but if he provides facts to support his reasons than its legitimate
Pachter always has legitimate reasons. He is a professional and doesn’t “spew nonsense” for the sake of attention. Frankly, though, both of these analysts are only discussing one our two aspects of hardware sales apiece. Pachter trends to focus on current and future trends whereas this guy sounds pretty retrospective. If you want the full, realistic picture, you’d be wise to consider both positions.
no, patcher looks at single figures too much. go read his stuff. He picks things to satisfy his view. this guy looked at mulitple factors at least.
give me one analyst that has used something as logical as this one. Just one.
This makes a lot of sense.
Nintendo’s so smart :)
100% agreed. This guy knows what he’s talking about. And he’s right in the last statement too about how they must have a solid launch with a wide range of titles available at launch and online features from launch day. If they pull all that off Wii U will be a tough competitor to the next gen playstation and xbox.
Go Nintendo!
We all know the Wii U will do fine and make lots of money. Not compared to the Wii though. You have to remember that the Wii came out at a time when the world economy was booming.
If the Wii U and the 3DS had some connectivity, I would buy it day one. :)
They will have connectivity. Remember how they said Super Smash Bros. would connect between the 3DS and WiiU versions? Nintendo’s history with the past three consoles suggests so, too.
Yeah this guy is right!!!!!
At least someone seems to know what they are talking about.
So, Wii U will only run at 720p?
no he referred to the TV sets running at 720p and also sony and mcirosoft. It is proven by developers that Wii U can run 1080p easily without problems! :)
This Analyst knows what he is saying. I totally agree especially with the 720p television. Most of us here in Jamaica television is 720p. “mine is 1080p tho :)” But as am saying the analyst is correct. When the ps3 came out most of us didn’t get it first cause it was known that it shows better on “flat screen tv” So we get the wii which shows just fine.
Now that Mario is confirmed I am positive that the wii U will so millions of copy before the year end. Those American Mom will get the wii u for their kids and the real gamers will get it too for their call of duty and their batman and Assasin Creed. I am soo excited. Nintendo is really thinking out of the box. E3 WHY THE FUCK YOU TAKING SOOOO FUCKING BLOOD CLAAT LONG TO COME?????? CHO RASS CLAAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Get N or get FUCK out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Finally an analyst that has some common sense. Good to know they aren’t all yammering Pachter clones. This man gets it. He undersatnd that Nintendo is a company that makes games only. They don’t have other massive divisions of their company they can siphon money from if their stratergy in the game industry is failing. They have to drive innovation, make surgical strikes and hit the mark everytime to stay alive. They certainly do that and even when they stumble they will quickly rectify the situation.
Kudos to Ted Pollak. a voice of reason in among the hysterical masses leading up to E3.
Leave luck to heaven.

Real gamers for call of duty….
I stopped reading there
What am saying is that the American culture consider games like call of duty and fps games as games for the gamers and the others for casual games. Nintendo themselves states that they wanted back the hardcore and unfortunately call of duty type of games are considered hardcore in america I am not saying that it is…. but that’s how it is portrayed over there.
Get N or get OUT
well to be honest, I work at gamestop and I’m seein a lot of older people comein talkin bout how they now hate call of booty. A lot of them have told me that they arent even gonna pick up Black Cocks 2. I’ve only seen kids and girls come in to get Modern whorefare 3 now
i am one of those older ppl lol :) i’m 28. didnt pick up MW3 and not picking up COD BO either
Over there?
ah, ok now I understand. You don’t live in the states but stereotype it because of what you hear. see, the worst type of fanboy is the one that pushes this whole casual/hardcore bullshit as if it was true. I play Zelda, Uncharted, Angry birds, Zenonia, Halo, CoD, Assasins Creed, Motorstorm, Tetrix, Mario, Metroid, Final fantasy, bust a move, nintendogs and a shit load of other games. I’m from the states and recently got addicted to Cut the Rope (my altime favorite game has to be Eternal Eyes for the PSX) what would you label me?
I would you label you as a gamer. A natural gamer like me. :D
Get N or get OUT
if games like call of duty’s activision crysis 3 and gta 5 are coming to the wii u the succes will be easy, because ubisoft is suporting nintendo to dead they said, ea said it too but atm theres no word from crysis 3 coming to wii u or dead space, we need to confirm activision but its really likely they will do, and i hope rockstar too…
An analyst who knows what he is doing?!? What kind of bizzaro world have I stumbled into?
Finally. Nintendo will do fine with the Wii-U
Someone predicting good things for Nintendo? I can’t get used to this, it does not make me feel confident at all. I liked it better when they were predicting DOOM! I feel safer that way :)
U mad faggit?
The less FPS games there are, the better.

Even though Sony and Microsoft were ahead of their time by making HD games this gen, I think Nintendo catered more towards the common household televisions, namely the standard def, which is why most people went with Ninty.
You ain’t ahead of anything if you can’t keep in line with the present.
This is EXACTLY what I’ve been saying. Haha
No, seriously, they’re going to really need some awesome launch games for the Wii U come its launch. At this point, the games are really the only reason for me to care about the Wii U (which is a perfectly legitimate reason to have, cuz as we know, games make the console), and if there are either no awesome launch games (at least one good one there that you can’t already get on other consoles — Mario Wii U) or no awesome upcoming games, then I will swear off the Wii U forever. 3DS’ launch was definitely bad enough (especially given how many games they paraded for it before its launch), but if history repeats for the Wii U (and I’m fairly certain it won’t), my interest is all zero.
I agree with this analyst. At least he, unlike many others lately, bases his conclusion on something other than mere anonymous rumors. And it’s a conclusion I have reached myself about Nintendo ever since Wii.
If most people currently don’t have 1080p technology, why overemphasize on it just for the comparatively few who do? Of course, this is not to say Wii U shouldn’t or won’t be capable of 1080p, but I can understand that in aiming to do full 1080p with the Wii U, it would probably mean stretching the Wii U to its full capacity.
But I personally think many Wii U gamers (which I think will likely include a good number of core gamers, after a while) will be too distracted by the new experiences possible with the Wii U controller to even care about 1080p. If that early Ghost Recon Online game concept commercial from E3 2011 was any indication, Wii U’s looking to bring a refreshing experience to console gaming. Couple this potential of a brand-new console gameplay experience with the fact that most people HD owners own 720p HDTVs, and that just might be enough to secure the success of Wii U.
And I also agree that they absolutely need solid launch titles and all online features available from day one. No more waiting months or years later to get all the online functionality out of our gaming machine, Nintendo–you can’t afford it anymore.
I agree on this articlr for once. i own a 720 3d tv n love it. … I dont see need for anything more to consitute wasting money on. And as mention if online features are on par or bettet n all running on launch day its s buy for many. 3DS started slow but is doing very well. And online works great on it. if wii u has nintendo video as well as nintendo show n allows re downloads for virtual console game 3ds owners bought free of charge.it will succeed. Honestly it will succeed regardless due fan base. I know i am not sure about it… But after picking up 3ds i have found my love for nintendo again. But 360 is where i prefer my consoling due to more adult nature of games alas witcher 2 etc
yeah strong launch titles and solid online is what’s important for wiiu.
This IS a REAL Analysis.
AND SICKR! WHY ARE YOU ACTING TODAY LIKE A XBOX FANBOY? You said Suprise in this article, it’s obvious it will do well, and more recent you said another obvious thing.
He is obviously implying that the surprise is that an ‘Analyst’ is predicting great Wii U sales.
*massive facepalm*
*severe bleeding*
*walks to hospital*
Nintendo has Mario, they will do well. Even if the economy crashes and Apple goes out of business(It could happen :o), Nintendo will still have those famous names to sell their products.
Finally an analyst who knows what the fuck he’s talking about, gives reasons why he projects what he does, and doesn’t take sides. every body make this analytic projection of wii U launch your status on any and all social networks you are currently on, get the word out that not all analysts are retarded assholes. and space buz it is pretty obvious that the surprise is an analyst saying this.
“This analyst sure knows what he’s talking about!”
You people are sheep.
It’s true enough that the Wii was designed for then-current television standards, but then again… that’s why it slipped after its first two years. Nintendo is only building a system to match today’s technology. When you’re in the market where your console’s life expectancy is five to six years, you can’t simply build for today. You have to look to tomorrow, and the thousands of other tomorrows that will happen between Wii U and whatever comes next. When the other next gen consoles are released, it’ll only be a matter of time until 3rd party developers start moving away from Nintendo yet again. TV’s will come in higher definitions at lower prices, just as they did between 2005 and now.
I’m super excited for Wii U and some high-definition Nintendo magic. But I’m also super concerned that I’ll have to buy yet another Microsoft or Sony console because that’s where all the games will be.
It’s like I said up in a previous comment, Pachter always has legitimate reasons for what he says. He is a professional and doesn’t “spew nonsense” for the sake of attention. Both of these analysts are only discussing one or two aspects of hardware sales. Pachter trends to focus on current and future trends whereas this guy sounds pretty retrospective. This analyst doesn’t mention software sales, which is probably *the* contributing factor in hardware sales.
If you want the full, realistic picture, you’d be wise to consider both positions.
