Geoff Keighley: “Mario Will Be On The Wii U At Launch”

On Spike’s “All Access Weekly,” video games journalist Geoff Keighley has announced that a new Mario game will launch with the Wii U. Keighley didn’t specify which Mario game will be released. On the Wii U Facebook page, Nintendo teased (but didn’t reveal) three video games that will launch alongside their new console – could a new 3D Super Mario title be one of them? We should find out which games will be launching with the Wii U in a couple of days during E3.

        1. Asmartperson, dude pkstar is my friend he dont even dare to say first ok? oh and one more thing *YOU’R ME*

    1. dont be fools guy’s Miyamoto said hes making a new mario bros off of the super mario bros MII shown last year

  1. my wallet is hurting. especially after buying a 3rd 3DS, the new iPad, & some games. oh well. guess i’ll work some overtime

      1. Haha, a Mario FPS where you have to keep finding fire/ice flowers.
Would make a pretty good bonus level or Mario Party mini-game. Not a fully fledged game though

        1. Guys, guys okay. Listen to this. Guys, okay. How about this.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii U It takes NSMB Wii one step higher by literally copy and pasting the exact same game onto a new disc. No upscaling or anything. Just NSMB Wii on another disc.

  2. Duh, the 3DS didn’t have a big launch, so it started out with bad sales. NSMB games are easy and quick to make plus they sell like hotcakes, so it just seems natural

    1. For Nintendo, the levels and engine is easy to make, but the creativity set in each level might take them a while to make. Who knows, it has been a while now.

      1. Haha “Creativity”. IMO NSMB hasn’t had a single creative aspect put in that series. Granted, that’s my opinion, but still

  3. S’long as it isn’t another New Super Mario Bros game. I’m sorry but is anyone else bored to death of that series?

      1. No, he is not the only one. I can’t stand the NSMB series. They do absolutely nothing original and are just made as a cheap cash-in on Nintendo’s part.

      2. He’s most definitely not the only one. If THAT is the mario game for the Wii U launch, sales aren’t going to be good.

          1. Dude a “real gamer” would realize the NSMB series are super easy and do ABSOLUTELY nothing new. At all. A “real gamer” would also realize that people have their own opinions on certain things. Your just a kid pretending to be a “real gamer” which is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard of

          2. Galaxy 2 is probably the most difficult Mario game to complete 100% I’ve ever played. Meanwhile I could beat any NSMB game 100% in one or two days if I really tried. And just because a game has retro elements doesn’t mean it’s better than graphically impressive 3D ones

                  1. Haha yes, it was very difficult getting through that level without getting hit.

Sorry, I didn’t know NSMB was hard for you even though its super easy

                    1. Well if you read your own fucking comment “NSMB are more Retro and have better difficulty”

      3. keep in mind 2d mario is easy to make but because they want it near launch and 2d mario game sell more than 3d, of course nintendo will go 2d for launch, it would be stupid not to; and for all people that only care about graphics on Mario games i got 2 things to say: 1. 3ds has the =/= power of Wii/GameCube of course it will look like Wii graphics, 2. mario games are ALL about the gameplay, NEVER about graphics.

    1. The 2D Mario games sell surprisingly a lot more than the 3D Mario games, even the ones on the Wii. It would make sense to launch with a 2D Mario game and then follow up with a 3D Mario game within 1.5 years.

    2. Yeah, same. They don’t try many new things with it and the Co-Op could easily end up in a bloodbath between your friends. I personally want something more like Super Mario Sunshine or Super Mario 64.

      1. My two cents. I’m sick of nsmb too. Been sick of them since the wii version. I would love a 3d Mario at launch. If it’s another same ol 2d nsmb I’d be far from excited.

  4. I think it will be New Super Mario Bros. Mii because the old one on Wii sold well and they want a well known game at launch. They alreay had a small bit done last year and it’s not as hard to make as a game like Super Mario Galaxy so it is also plausible that it is nearing completion for the Wii U launch

  5. Adventure & sidescroller series are fine. But I hate the camera angle in 3D Land. Makes it way too hard, and not in the fun way

  6. New Super Mario Bros. Mii with compatibility with the forthcoming New Super Mario Bros. 2 on the 3DS.

Oh, you know the three launch games Nintendo teased at yesterday? Smash Bros: Nintendo x Sega is 27 letters long. Unlikely (I know) but wouldn’t that be amazing…

  7. I’d want a 3D Mario game for personal reasons, however if Nintendo wants the best possible launch they should be going for NSMB. That will definitely sell the console.

All I can say is I hope they incorporate much more creativity into this NSMB.

  8. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy the ‘New Super Mario’ series, but I’m not sure it should be a launch title unless it’s packed with the system. It’s a great series but it’s not a system seller. The problem is that the graphic style is a bit ‘bland’ and sterile. Could easily be made with a level editor (Which is something I REALLY hope gets included with it!)
I miss the artistic whimsy of Mario World with crazy Dino enemies and the graphical styling of the Yoshi’s Island/Story games

    1. Here’s the thing, I hate the NSMB series, but it is a system seller. NSMBW sold WAY more than Galaxy 2. Its the sad truth

      1. I know it sold a crap-load but I don’t think it’ll sell the system, because other than HD graphics it’s a title that wont really look any different to New Mario Wii.
To sell a system the release titles really need to show off what it’s capable of, to me at least, that mean’s a new 3D Mario title

        1. Wii U will be on the market for 5-6 years at least. Let’s not worry about the system not having every huge game released a month out of the gate. SM Galaxy wasn’t released until nearly a year after the Wii launch. That will probably be the case this time around too. Even if it’s not released this year, I think we will see some trailer or gameplay of the next big 3D Mario.

    2. Thank you sir, the only thing that would get me to buy the new sidescroller mario game is if it had a versatile level creator and if it resembled Mario World. Or at least, if it played NOTHING like NSMB

      1. What would also be great is if New Super Mario Bros. 2 on 3DS also had a level editor and you could download all the created levels on both games.

        1. Additional note: It would be a great way to test the waters for similar functionality in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. games’ Stage Builder feature.

          1. Yeah that would actually be great. Oddly enough I was saying to a friend earlier that when MArio Kart/F Zero hit the WiiU I’d like to see (if not a 3DS version) then a free app for the 3DS that let me create tracks to upload to the WiiU at a later date

  9. yeah sadly it will be New Super Mario Bros Mii as the Mario launch title. Not that NSMB is a bad series they got going but idk to me that doesnt scream ”omg I must go out and buy that system for that”.

I think the Mario launch title has to be a main entry into the series(The Wii U’s Mario Galaxy) in order to fully grab peoples attention as a must have system.

    1. Agreed. They should at least use a new graphics engine for New Super Mario. They just all feel like expansion packs. At least throw a level editor into the next one one WiiU

  10. I understand why they would use NSMB, its easy to make money on. Don’t get me wrong, I like it. I’m just hoping for something metroid related. Hopefully, prime. A Zelda would be nice too. Maybe a brand new Waluigi adventure? Hey, I can dream…

  11. As blasphemeous as this sounds, I’m sick of Mario. I love the game series to death, but seriously Nintendo. Find something new to open a console. You cannot progress to newer and better things when you fallback on 27 year old, albet flagship, IP. But since you’re not going to listen anyways, at least open with a new Galaxy game.

  12. Since Wii U is trying to target hardcore-ish gamers, core and possibly casuals then maybe the new Mario game will have some sort of edge to it. You don’t want the new lineup to scare the hardcorezies away do you? :P

  13. They’re not taking any chances with the Wii U launch. They want to make sure they have as many big guns there as possible on the 1st party front. They can’t rely on the 3rd party like they did with the 3DS. Leave luck to heaven.

  14. I would love to see super mario world remastered into a 3D world/game. The style or layout would be a cross between paper mario ( to add depth to the world & story!) And mario galaxy ( except a more earthly tone, no space!. The ghost house and castle fully crafted into a work of art to be. Yoshi and his new hd textures ect. Visit all the diff worlds. The list goes on!
