Miyamoto’s Thoughts On Wii U’s Zelda

Because The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword launched in November 2011, it makes sense that a new title in the franchise was not present at this year’s E3. Although it wasn’t on the show floor, Shigeru Miyamoto is thinking about the next console Zelda. Miyamoto reiterates that the Zelda HD experience shown at E3 2011 was only made to display the graphical capabilities of Wii U.

Miyamoto wants to find out what most people want for the next Zelda – including both casual and dedicated gamers. Miyamoto wants Wii U’s Zelda to reach a large audience and be attractive for all types of gamers. Nintendo Land will feature a Zelda attraction – perhaps this is Nintendo’s way of introducing more people to The Legend of Zelda series.

“With the last game, Skyward Sword, that was a game where you had motion control to use your weapons and a lot of different items, and I thought that was a lot of fun, but there were some people who weren’t able to do that or didn’t like it as much and stopped playing partway through it,” Miyamoto said. “So we’re in the phase where we’re looking back at what’s worked very well and what has been missing and how can we evolve it further.”

  1. With how Skyward Sword was more story driven, I want to see how they can make the next Zelda even more story driven without detracting the Zelda-esque gamestyle we all grew to love. I don’t want an HD remaster of a past Zelda title, I want an all new game. That’s just me and how I feel.

  2. Tbh it’s way too early for a Zelda, looking at the amount of time that was spent on Skyward Sword, if they’re looking for the next one to be just as good we’ll be waiting for a while. Of course, like with the Wii, they’ll probably want to release one Zelda game, then release the one they spend ages on some time afterwards.
Ofc it’s kinda different because Twilight Princess was just changing the Gamecube version for the Wii, and obviously they shouldn’t do that for Skyward Sword

    1. I still think they should have shown us a short trailer based on the one from last year on Wii U. A Zelda trailer would have impacted so much hype in the Wii U. And don’t give me this “Skyward Sword just launched” bull. Gears of War 3 launched only 2 month before Skyward Sword and they had a fame at E3. As did Rayman Origins.

      1. Zelda games and Gears of War games have completely different development cycles for many reasons. One of those reasons is that Zelda brings something completely new to the table with every iteration. Gears of War, however, is just a formulaic third person shooter with the same graphics engine, similar characters, and same gameplay mechanics. You can’t compare the releases of these two games.

        1. actually, the reason is because Gears might have had a few teams working on it before Gears 3 was even released. It might not be the same team. Nintendo has pretty much the same people working on zelda games, obviously there are changes, but for the most part, the same.

        2. let me stop you there. although gears of war has had a somewhat routine release schedule in terms of sequels, each one is pretty distinctive from the others. not as dramatically as zelda, but it is different every time and they do update the graphics, but not dramatically. the gears of war franchise are overall quality games and shouldn’t be shunned as formulaic.

            1. Wrong. Gears of War is a TPS not an FPS. I am a Gears fan and played all 3 (only beat 2 and 3 though) and loved them all. Even though they might not be major graphically better from game to game, each game is long and different from the other, with each game giving distinctive stories that tie the player to the characters.

            2. ok now i KNOW you haven’t played any of them. ihey’re not even fps. theyre third person you retard. god don’t criticize something you know NOTHING bout. you’re worse than the nintendo haters.

              1. Actually, he wasn’t criticizing Gears of War, he just said you can’t compare it with Zelda, in terms of production. I don’t know shit about Gears, but, just make this: Look at Skyward Sword, then look at Twilight Princess and then look to Wind Waker. Now look at Gears 1, 2 and 3. The Zelda games have, visualy, nothing in commom. Gears sure have enhanced graphics through the titles, but they don’t start almost from scrath. And, story of both aside, Zelda is a Puzzle game too. Each item have to be thought through over and over. But, if gears also has this feature just focus how distinct Zelda titles look from each other. And, I always tell this to people. Don’t compare Japan’s chain of production with the Western one. Example: I just made a quick search and the Soundtrack from Gears 1 was made by one guy and other guy made 2 and 3 as Kojin Kondo made the soundtrack of each Zelda console game since the first one.

Again, I’m not badmouthing Gears, I never played it, I don’t like shooters, first or third person. But players got accustomed with the COD/FIFA/PES anual release schedule and that has never been how Nintendo works, although there is a lot of new Marios and they are almost look alike and that is a pitty. I sinceriely hope that this accursed formula doesn’t befalls Zelda, otherwise we won’t get Pieces of Art, but more of the same games.

Ultimately I agree, Pikmin isn’t that strong franchise to make a big impression. A Metroid title or something like that should have been scheduled for next year. But, that wouldn’t change how Third Parts look at the console, it would just make us gamers happier and maybe help with the stocks. But that is just my opnion.

        3. Also, Zelda games have to properly fit together, story-wise. Zelda is a 20+ year old series with tons of settings, characters, atmospheres and lore to include. It simply can’t just be made in 1-2 years and be as deep as it’s meant to be.

    2. Well technically Skyward Sword was mostly finished for a 2010 release but they kept it back for polisihing.
They could in that time have started on the next zelda properly so I am a little disappointed they aren’t further along with it (even though I still expected no zelda information to be at E3). They said that Skyward Sword in fact was one of the fastest zelda games for them to create with help from a lot of there different teams so I don’t a release of the next one for end of 2013/early 2014 is an unreasonable expectation. (but after the news that they are still looking at what worked and didn’t and responding to feedback, I don’t think it is going to be that way now).

        1. Possibly, I recon Zelda for 3DS will be available at the earliest of the “holiday season” in 2013, or maybe early 2014, since we didn’t even hear anything about it this year. As far Zelda Wii U I hope they spend a lot of time on it so I think it’d be more like 2015 when we get it, late 2015

  3. I want a sequel to Windwaker more than anything. I sincerely hope they do that instead of another adult-Link game..

      1. Agreed! But I think Nathan meant more like a home console WW sequal where theres the ocean again but on the big screen. Bit like how MM is a sequal of OOT and the graphics and game style are similar (both set with a big field in the middle with towns and stuff on the outside) but it seems very unlikely since we already have 2 sequals like you said. Best to stick to a new original game, no more sequals for now, unless it maybe follows on from TP or SS storylines.

        1. i would really dig a skyward sword or twilight princess sequel. both of those games seem like they would be able to have awesome sequels,. probably more likely a twilight princess sequel considering the strong reaction to the zelda hd tech demo they showed last year.

      2. Spirit tracks wasn’t a sequal to WW or PH. Other than having similar graphics styles, ST isn’t related to the other 2 very much.

    1. Lol @ first wanting remakes and at the end ask for the new game.
Too much remakes, but people STILL want more.
Ocarina of Time has already been made 5 times, but people STILL seem to crave for MORE REMAKES. Likewise Nintendo answers to these feelings, because they will make a shitload of money with less work. Shame.

  4. How about you keep the graphics from the Wii u demo and make non skyward sword motion controls. Make it an option to use a regular controller

    1. Totally Completely agree with this. I love the look of the demo, and I want the option of what controller to use. You nailed it.

    2. That sounds pretty good! What I don’t get, and correct me if I’m wrong cos I don’t know this, but seriously they should ask the fans more as to what they want in the games, I know they’ve recently said they are asking Zelda fans what they want before they start, so I guess I’m contradicting myself, but yknow what I mean, they should ask more often!

  5. Just vive us a bloody, story driven, mature, serious, charming & gorgeous Zelda, enough of the casual gamers, most of Nintendo games are family oriented, can’t we have something bloody & mature, and not for the “hardcore” players but for people who love art, reality, and a serious and shocking storyline to play with a gorgeous world that only there I can see it. I want something mature for the intelligent and experienced player, not just blood all over the place, like a intelligent, mature game that Nintendo has never done before, something deep, not just jumping around or shooting into pieces everything that moves.

    1. I really hope Nintendo just happens to read this comment. Nintendo, just make the most beautiful Zelda game ever, give it graphics that prevail over those of every other game on any console, don’t make the gameplay too easy, make it serious yet still quirky like Ocarina of Time, and don’t make a big decision just because there are some “beginners” out there who complain.

    2. I dig what you are saying. I think the closest to this is Twilight Princess. That game is very underrated. And you’re right about the mature thing. We have enough kiddy looking Zelda titles. This guy swings a sword! He fights monsters! He’s so bad ass that he doesn’t even talk! ha ha
The 2011 demo was promising. I wish they would push that nto something.

      1. You won’t have to worry about that as long as Miyamoto-sama is alive and has any control over his IP.

  6. Zelda must stay true to its’ roots above all else. If you try to make appeal to everyone, it might end up appealing to no one. I trust Miyamoto to make the best decision on where he feels the series should go next. He’ll make the best choice available with the Wii U’s hardware. Leave luck to heaven.

  7. They call me... Mr. Vain

They should do it like this:
    – Art style of Twilight Princess in HD
    – Very Story Driven like Skyward Sword
    – Memorable Side Quest like Majora’s Mask
    – Exploration like Link to The Past
    – Epicness of Ocarina of Time
    There, Best game ever

      1. the legend of zelda: twilight sword mask link of time oracle!! there the best game ever!!!!!!!! n_n

  8. It’s upsetting because I know nothing will materialise for this for years. Considering Skyward Sword (the 1st Zelda game made primarily for the Wii) came out in the final year of the consoles lifetime..

  9. Let’s see an HD remaster of Ocarina of Time first. For the next new Zelda title, I would love to see two-player co-op for the first time.

  10. I still don’t understand why people expected games like “Wii U Zelda” at this year’s E3. Miyamoto said at LAST E3 that the HD Zelda was just a graphics demo. Skyward Sword JUST came out a bit over half a year ago. To assume that Nintendo’s had a Wii U Zelda in development at the same time as Skyward Sword is …kind of ridiculous.

People are expecting a bit too much from Nintendo tbqh.

    1. I totally agree. I wouldn’t want to have a new Zelda game every year, not on a home console anyway, it’s never been that way before so why should it now? What I’m about to say may sound stupid, but it’s happened in many series before – if you have an annual game release, it will just end up getting stale. Does anyone really want that to happen with the Legend of Zelda series?

    2. Oh. You mean they don’t churn out a new Mario game every year or two like a damn Call of Duty? Three Mario-themed games this year. Two last year. None of them really have any sort of “WoW” factor like Mario 64 did.

And Skyward Sword was actually done in 2010, they just held it back.

Maybe if they spent less time tying to get people who don’t play video games to stand on boards, and less time churning out cookie-cutter Mario games, they could have had a Zelda demo to show off and then release next year sometime, or make a decent Mario game that actually properly ushers in a powerful HD console, instead of this Wii clone from last year with a few new features.

      1. The Mario games you mentioned are a literal 3D-platformer, a sports game, an RPG, and two 2D-platformers on two separate consoles. That’s very different from multiple FPS games on a 9 month cycle in an oversaturated market that pushed massive DLC and pre-orders 2 months after the previous game’s release. NSMB 2 and NSMBU will be the only 2D Mario on those consoles for the entirety of their lifespan.

        1. 2 shit games instead of 1 proper HD one. Good job Nintendo. I was rooting for you after the whole “we want to impress core gamers again” speech but this does not impress me in the least.

ZombiU and Assassins Creed 3 are the only games I’m interested in. And even then it’s only appealing on the Wii U if they do 1080p not 720p, and/or at least keep it at 60fps. Otherwise XBOX360 version it is, for me. I’m not paying hundreds of dollars just to have a few game features on the tablet. I wan marked improvement: this is a brand new console; if it can’t obviously outshine 7 year old consoles, it’s laughable.

          1. Have you stopped to think maybe they didn’t show the new 3D Mario or Zelda because they’re not ready yet, and would steal any thunder from this year’s announcements? Let’s put this in perspective, Wii U will not even be on the market for another 4-5 months. It’s not even for sale yet. Look at how people are underwhelmed by the showing; that’s because every game that was announced people were anticipating or was already announced. I’m glad Nintendo didn’t blow their first-party load prematurely, because I expect to be thoroughly impressed at the next E3, six months after I own the console. Yes, it’s a long time to wait, but once the console is available, it’s not that long. E3 isn’t the definitive showing; in fact, EA already announced Fifa and Madden, but they weren’t shown at the conference. Aliens wasn’t shown either; but that doesn’t mean it isn’t coming. What good is teasing a game that won’t be available for 12-18+ months? This is still 2012, I don’t want to continuously anticipate games that I can’t play for another year. We still have the Tokyo Game Show, and no doubt there will be future Nintendo Direct announcements centered directly on 3rd-party games later this year. Take a deep breath, and concentrate on games that will be available in the Wii U launch window, not holiday 2013.

  11. The problem with creating a Zelda title that appeals to both core and casual gamers, is that you run a high risk of alienating both groups. Miyamoto please don’t move away from motion plus because some people were too lazy or stupid to figure it out. I bought Skyward Sword day one a beat it 4-5 times already. If anyone should dictate the next Zelda game, it’s players like myself, NOT those who didn’t even finish the game. Nintendo you already have enough casual games; and Zelda should be a game that not everyone should be able to beat easily.

  12. Skyward Sword was amazing. I loved the story, gameplay, and the use of the wii motion plus. I also loved how challenging it was. I hope the next Zelda on the wii u is just as challenging. I hope there is a new story too, not a remake. The Zelda games and have always been creative and innovative, So I’m really excited to see what they can do with the gamepad.

  13. Nintendo Lands needs DLC content. I think if it is Pre-Installed on the Wii U and is been updated with rich content (realy rich, not just for money). In a perfect world, to ensure the quality of this DLC and continuity, this has to be Anual updates, I think this can be post e3 releases, so can be part of e3 presentation every year.
They can add whole franchises like StarFox, Kirby, Fire Emblem (with al the strategy mechanics, or action-based rpg, or both!) and others I don’t recall. All with mii based characters and stuffs that maintain the Nintendo Land touch. Make some noise, and tell if you approve and how do you think this idea can be completed. If we make a complete request and support we can take this to nintendo for consideration. Op Rainfall, Moonfall and Mynintendonews.com will be enough for spreading (yes, i’m counting that they could help spread a good idea)

    Thanks and Read closely!

  15. They call me... Mr. Vain

To be totally honest, I will love any Zelda game nintendo gives me, Just as long as they dont sacrifice the Story element the Series is known for.

    1. where did you read anything about casual input???

“but there were some people who weren’t able to do that”

I understand this as people with a disability or who can not use motion control (there are lots of people with ‘handicaps’ that doesn’t allow them to use wiimotes in this way).

“or didn’t like it as much and stopped playing partway through it”

EVERY so-called hardcore gamer I know doesn’t like the way skyward sword has to be played. Every single one of them.

      Where are these casuals now?

  16. A another 3ds zelda should do just fine or a cool ninja game or something with a cool open world like gravity rush(even though the reviews say the game is not that fun) the 3ds needs this

  17. Steampunk Zelda. That is all.

You can still maintain the core Zelda identity within a different aesthetic of a game. It’s not impossible. But so many conservatives say it is anyway.

  18. I think some of you guys need to let nintendo get on with what they do best, no one was expecting a zelda game this year because of skyward sword, let the masters get to work and hope that maybe next year we will all be amazed, even if it is just a short trailer for a 2014 game and in the mean time, enjoy what nintendo has revealed this year :)

  19. Get somebody working on that shit U showed last year. Then get another team remaking the old zeldas for HD and 3d

  20. I’m part of those who stopped halfway. Sad actually…. :( But motion controls really reduce my enthusiasm of continuing through the game, it just annoys me….
I played Twilight Princess for the first time last year, and I chose to buy it on the gamecube. Went through it non-stop. I prefer button-smashing than “move-smashing”. The buttons are your best buddies. They never trick nor disappoint you ;)

  21. Maybe Skyward Sword came out not too long ago, but I truly believe they have been working on a new Zelda all this time. They need a game like this for the Wii U and they can’t wait forever to release it.
I don’t mind flying or sailing to different areas of a game, but not to be a whole theme. I want an option to use motion or just regular controls. I don’t want Link to sound like a 9 year old Japanese boy. I don’t want sissy artwork that only the casual would enjoy watching the hardcore play. I don’t want a flying beetle. I don’t want Ocarina, Majora, Windwaker or Skyward anything. It’s done. Over. And I don’t want HD or 3-D remakes of anything, unless it’s Twilight, since that game is pretty kick-ass all around. I don’t want a sequal or a prequal. I don’t need a fairy or a ghost/ spirit/ whatever to follow me around.
I think it was Miyamoto himself who said about Twilight Princess when it was announced: Sometimes we get to know a character and then we grow up. Now it’s time for the character to grow up. Or something like that.
Just listen to the fans and I’m sure they will come up with something special. It would just be nice if it stood alone as a Zelda game and it was something to chew on.
OK, I’m contradicting myself now and not making sense anymore. I’ll stop.

  22. It’s obvious Miyamoto. People stopped playing halfway through because I had to go to the same 3 places over and over again, and it was infuriating. And every mission was basically a fetch quest. Vary the setting and the gameplay and more people will want to finish. I loved the game and finished the whole thing, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t want to stop playing sometimes. The game infuriated me at points.

  23. The motion controls are great, really it feels natural. The sword where I want it to move. You can’t have that feeling when you have to remember what combination of buttons to press. dropping motion controls would be going backwards…

  24. Pingback: Wii U Game for the Legend of Zelda Series in Near Future?

  25. Make it accessible but make it difficult enough to keep core gamers satisfied (kinda like how Retro took Donkey Kong Country, up’d the difficulty and turned it into Donkey Kong Country Returns; something that appeals to beginners and core gamers)

  26. Personally, I really didn’t like the huge boost in difficulty compared to the other Zelda games. I personally like having fun in games rather than going through ridiculous challenges. Specifically, the stealth Silent Realms- remove those and I’ll gladly go through the game. I also would’ve liked it if there were more varied bosses- you fight a few multiple times in this game. That’s just me though. Skyward Sword is still a great game in itself though.

  27. SS was my favorite Zelda game and I’m sad to hear there won’t be something similar to it next time. It’s not a problem with the company though, it’s a problem with consumers. It’s always the consumers. ._.

Oh well, the next Zelda game will be amazing anyway. They always are.

  28. Wow was he watching me play? cause I beat the 1st boss then lost interest.. Much needed improvements but buying Wii U launch day regardless.

  34. Ok wait a second. Don’t show me a demo of Zelda showing me what the system is capable of and then downgrade the graphics for the actual game! I want those graphics if I’m gonna get a wii U. I’m tired of Zelda not giving us better graphics and I can assure Nintendo right now they will reach another entire audience if they release the game with these graphics like in the demo. Zelda needs this!! A Zelda game looking like this demo will make me buy a wii u just for this game. I just got seriously excited to buy a Wii U and now I read this was just a teaser and not what the game will look like. Screw that!!!! Make it like this or you lost me. I’m a huge Zelda fan over the years and am seriously getting tired of the graphics. It’s time to step it up Nintendo and give so many Zelda fans what they want. Do not regress these graphics!!!! I’m telling you that will be a huge mistake.

  35. Lets all be honest with one another, most Zelda fans would have rather asked for a HD remaster of skyward sword for the Wii U, than a remaster of wind waker, had we been given the chance to ask.
