Nintendo Using Cheaper Screens On Newer 3DS Consoles?

3DS Tribe is reporting that Nintendo is using cheaper screens on post price cut Nintendo 3DS consoles. Newer systems apparently have a more washed out and yellow-ish tint to them. The publication has stated that they’ve only been testing European Nintendo 3DS consoles. It would make sense for Nintendo to use cheaper components, as and when they become available. Has anyone else noticed a difference in quality?

      1. This may be off topic but I’ve noticed that my screen gets brighter when I plug my 3DS in to charge while I’m playing. I bought mine launch day and have it on the brightest setting.

        1. That’s normal for all 3DS systems due to how much battery power the 3DS uses when it has 3D on(which doubles the backlight’s output.)

    1. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was turned on by default and they just didn’t notice or even bothered to change the brightness. Not everyone explores their systems when they buy it. I knew someone who didn’t know there was a web browser until I showed it to them. They were “too afraid” to press anything on the home screen except for Mario Land for fear of “breaking it”.

      1. They are not fit for owning a 3DS System… there’s nothing TO break on the 3DS console what-so-ever, it’s made simple for most complete idiots whoever never even touched a games console before. Idiot-Proof handheld games console.

  1. I wouldn’t like that, but they had to find a way to make it cheaper.
I’ve been waiting for a 3DS XL, but it seems like that’s not gonna happen. :(

    1. Is the 3DS worth buying? (I like Zelda & Harvest Moon/Rune Factory + Action/Adventure games. Graphics doesn’t matter to me as long as the game is good. I still play PS1/N64/SEGA games. lol :)

      1. it deffinately is especailly when a new zelda come out and if your a fan of Mario games there are already cool ones out and yo have to get Luigi’s Mansion 2 lol

      2. It is VERY MUCH worth buying! I got mine about 2 months after release and it TOTALLY PAID OFF! you can’t imagine the experience until you played on it! a 3dsXL isn’t needed, the screens ar big enough imo… otherwise DS games would be a bit pixeled *cough, DSIXL, cough* OoT3D is definitely worth buying… it’s just a great experience(this is coming from a long-term Zelda fan and pro[This year I’m trying to play all Zelda games, I already finished 10 ^^]) and when the next Zelda game comes out, it will without doubt be as epic as Zelda always is!
(a bit too) long story short: Buy the 3ds! It’s totally worthwhile, as every 3ds owner will be happy to tell you!
        Happy I could help,
        LukeSkr

        1. Wow! Thanks for the long reply! ^_^

I own a DSi XL though and I love the screen size.
I’m also a long-term Zelda fan!! ^_^ I’ve been playing Zelda since I was little! XD It’s my goal to play all Zelda games too! I’ve played *thinking* 9 Zelda games so far! :D (I own most of those)

I think I could get used to the 3DS’s screen size. I’ll buy one as soon as I can!

          1. Do it! I bought my DS lite three years ago. It’s a nice console, but when you play on a 3DS it’s an all-new experience. The 3D rocks! Can’t wait to see a new Zelda =D

  2. I can’t say as my 3DS was bought before the price drop, though if my friend has his when I have mine I’ll definitely try a comparison.

  3. I haven’t played a 3DS from before the price cut, but I do notice a difference between my 3DS and my DS lite while playing DS games. The colours on the 3DS are much less vivid, and do look very washed out, while the DS is much more vibrant, and prettier looking.

    1. Have you tried changing the brightness settings on the 3DS?

And DS games are going to look blurry on the 3DS, unfortunately, because of the difference of resolution.

  4. Yes. I’ve noticed this in my new red 3DS, specially when something white is shown, like the home menu.

    1. The legend of zelda 3Ds was a limited edition Console that was manufactured before the price cut, wasn’t it?

      that’s probably why

  5. Yeah,i dont think I but this either. I bought mine on day 1 abd my bf got his after the price cut. They are identical. I suppose it would depend when the cheaper screens became available though.

  6. I bought mines on the first day the 3DS came out and I don’t really see any problems with it and I didn’t notice anything wrong with my nieces 3DS because her dad (my half-brother) bought her a 3DS after the price cuts and the screen looks fine

  7. My brother got a 3DS a few months ago. I compared the screens too, it’s more brighter on his than mine for some reason. I thought it was because my 3DS was older…

  8. Me and my friend and his sister all got ours after the price cut so I couldn’t say either but I do know that the screens do not have a yellowish tinge to them

  9. Yes, i noticed this – i have a launch week 3DS and my brother got one for Christmas
and his screen definitely has a yellowish tint to it, and it wasn’t because power save was on, it was the actual screen. I wondered why this was but figured it may of just been that the backlights weren’t correctly bright or something. However this makes so much sense i wouldn’t be surprised if this is true.

  11. Nope, it’s not true. My 3DS is day one, and my sister’s is better than it is(Her’s is after the price cut)> I’ve had to send mine in for repair, and it still isn’t in as good of condition as my sisters.

  12. I have a launch day 3DS as well as a Zelda edition from black friday. The Zelda edition definitely has a yellow tint.

  13. I have a launch day unit and my friends have post-price cut units and I’ve never seen a difference, but then I got the impression from the article that they weren’t using these cheaper ones immediately after the price cut, but at some point between then and now.

  14. yup i notice, i got my 3ds in September, the one my sis got is the Zelda bundle one in holiday and i notice the screen is different like like….it dark for some reason;also the circle pad and triggers are not the same as well.

    1. I think the only difference I could notice with my Zelda edition is that the power button is easier to activate lol and that I prefer the power LED’s color when I play in the dark, because it’s easier on my eyes.

I think playing DS games doesn’t appear the same way, but I haven’t compared yet.

  15. no tint on mine. bought the beast after the price cut as well. instead of a cheaper screen how about a bigger screen dammit!

  16. My brother and I have a day-1 console and a Zelda-special edition (after price-cut), and I have 2 friends who have a day-1, 2 friends who bought theirs after the price cut. No difference at all between all of them.

  17. Nintendo started switching over to the new screens near the end of last year starting with the flame red and zelda 3ds’s, not all of the zelda 3ds’s have em though. there’s couple of benefits with the new screens. they’re a tad brighter and crosstalk (ghosting) has been reduced. the yellow tint also makes the screens more energy efficient, you can squeeze about an extra 40mins of battery life out of them.

  18. Anonymousssssssssssssssssssss

you shouldnt have said that. I got mine after the price cut and the screen looks great, but knowing this i might be searching for faults -_-

  19. I don’t want to be an ass but I thought the screens of all 3DS’ are cheap already… I didn’t think it would go any cheaper than it already was. And no, I am not a Nintendo-hater, I got a day-1 3DS myself. But it is a fact that the screens of the DS’s never been that much of high-quality screens.

  21. That would explain it! My brother’s 3DS screen is more yellowish and not as bright when on the same settings as my 3DS. Also, the hinge on his screen “clicks” into place while mine does more of a “flop”

    1. Lol I got that flop to, I started flipping it open now since I feel it might break any time now. might just wait till the inevitable revision though.

lol I really thought I was the only one with that floppy top.

  24. Actually, I won a Super Mushroom 3DS from the It’s-a-me Mario Campaign thing, and there is a small difference in colour between that one and my black Ambassador 3DS. The screen is a bit greener. Noticeable, but barely. I don’t really care tbh.

  25. my peach 3ds has a yellowish tint to it too, i thought that maybe since they are made on demand it could be like that iphone thing where the “glue wasn’t dry so gave a yellow tint” thing that would eventually fade. nothing to cry about though

  26. Typical shitty Nintendo business practices.

Vita’s OLED screen eats it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And in HD no less.

  27. I haven’t really noticed much of a difference… I used to have a launch blue 3DS, then lost it and bought a new red one… can’t remember it being much different from the launch one. I only see said “yellowish tint” when turning power-saving mode on, not otherwise…

  28. i believe i’ve seen the yellow tint issues with the vita and smart phones as well. my yellow tint is on power saver as well, my launch 3ds didn’t have it, but yeah it’s not really noticeable

  29. I have definetly noticed!! I got mine for Christmas and in the Mii Channel the background is very very blue! My brother got his today and the background looked so green!! Both with Power-Saving Mode on or off!!

  30. I have observed that of all different types of insurance, medical health insurance is the most marked by controversy because of the issue between the insurance coverage company’s necessity to remain adrift and the customer’s need to have insurance coverage. Insurance companies’ commission rates on wellbeing plans are extremely low, as a result some providers struggle to make a profit. Thanks for the ideas you discuss through this web site.

  31. I would rather DIY a front light for my game boys than buy a new one.it’s much cheaper and I enjoy the processing of DIY.

I found some front light panels for game boys in aliexpress.com It’s a 4-LED front panel. White LED and I put in front of the game boy LCD. it works perfect.

You can see my DIY Game boys below.
