New Console Coming To Challenge Wii U, PlayStation 4 And Next Xbox

Details have emerged regarding a brand new home console titled Ouya. The system will retail for $99 and will run Google’s popular Android operating system. The console’s games will be entirely free to play, but supposedly they will feature in-game purchases. The console is being designed, worked on, and marketed, by an impressive array of people. One of the other intriguing aspects is the underlying hardware is ‘built to be hacked’—every customer who buys a retail box will get a dev kit in the bargain, claims the developers. We should hear more about this promising project in a few days.

      1. Dude will you just shut up? We barely know anything about the console so stop calling people out because it seems stupid. Also for that same reason stop acting like its the greatest console ever invented.

  1. I don’t think, if you’re supposed to hack it and build your own stuff, that’s it’s really meant to compete with the larger consoles. Looks interesting.

        1. i dont think you were payed lol, oh and btw i do think this looks interesting, it reminds me of onlive almost, and i got that so i could play games on the go, and its pretty good. people need to stop dissmissing things before they even know anything about it lol

            1. onlive is pretty convenient if you have access to decent internet. its really good for trying games that you dont want to buy.

  2. This could be fun – definitely has my interest more than any of my tablet games with Apple. But I don’t think it’ll hit Nintento or the more dedicated consoles too hard. I like how open it is (though I’m too lazy/incompetent to mess with a Dev kit), but I’ll stick with the Wii and Wii U. Still, interesting stuff.

    1. Oh, and as long as the devs do F2P right. Have people pay for items that are hard to get not impossible to get.

  3. Jesus, the amount of fanboys that post in these comments make me sick. Be open minded.

Personally, I think this sounds great. Will be interested to see how it plays out.

    1. Unlike you spelling ability. There’s no point in this. “meant to be hacked”. Yeah, its gona make no money. As for free to play, PC already has it, and consoles are starting to get onto that train. Pointless “console”.

      1. NO SPELL NEED.

Hackable console will sell, people will want to buy. I’m definitely looking forward to the hackable part of this !! PREPARE TO BE HACKED !! >:D

        1. Hackable console, will make no money, because people can hack into it.
Its the PSP Go all over again.

          1. Hackable console WILL make money… you’ll see… They’ll prove you wrong, and when they do……You’ll eat those words. –– It’s not the PSP Go all over again.

            1. It’ll sell to hackers, but most people arent hackers.
Some guy above mentioned it being used as a teaching aid for people learning programming, thats what itll end up being. In fact theyd make more money if they just did that.

  5. $99 bucks is a great price, or maybe too cheap. I will reserve speculation until more details are revealed.

  6. i can see this being the new psp hacked then improved apon with emulators and new apps it could sell well and with the cheap price become the center of your television
i can see them selling to schools for teaching kids how to do simple programming
but im not sure it will sell to those who want in depth gaming and casual iphone gamers as the point of iphone games are to waste time while waiting and at home you have more to do than if you were on a bus
    i

if you are too lazy to read this it said gud 4 hcks + schol nt for gamerz

    1. interesting and weird

i’m wondering what the quality of the exclusives with be
other than that it’s bound to have a bunch of those f2p mmo’s you can find on steam/ internet
mmo and fps games are what it’s made for prob

i have like no opinion because this is so odd haha

      1. oh, and hella indie games too

the problem is though that like literally every game is bound to have in-game purchases

done replying to myself now :x

        1. Indie games is one of the positive things i can think of, as well as it being used as a teaching device. I mean, id love to make games and if i can literally create my own game, it might be worth a shot, but it wont overthrow consoles

  7. Ugh, why? Why join in this already cluttered console race? Free to play? Not bothered, because the prices for everyrhing is extrortionate if you actually want to do well, and ends up being more than full retail. Im mean, have people forgot what a demo is?
Do not want, will stick to my ps3/4 and wiiu

    1. Yes there’s plenty to bother. Yes, this is better, yes it’ll sell, yes it’ll be fun, yes it’s FREE–TO–PLAY, yes it’s hackable. $99 is worth it!

      1. Free to play means nothing to me, because its just multiplayer. And if they ever introduced it into single player, it would be the dumbest thing ever.
Free to play is for people who sucks balls at gaming, and cant rack up experience so they just buy their way to the top. Whats the point in that?
Most of the fun about a multiplayer is getting good, and being rewarded for it, until you reach the apex of your glory, then start all over again just for bragging rights.
Companies just need to do 5 hour trial demos or something, like PSN Plus does with its demos.

        1. Free-to-play CAN still give you experience AND NO IT FUCKING DOES NOT mean they are shitty gamers!! – What kind of shit did you eat? ……Don’t answer that.

Doesn’t have to be Multiplayer, YES multiplayer is fun and great, but there are times when people just prefer to play on their own. period. you can gain experience from playing ANY type of game. I am plenty sure that there WILL be playable demos and trials which people CAN play. Just wait till you see what comes to it, I expect Steam to come in somewhere and introduce some games for it, plus whoever else that wishes to try it. Even Indie Devs.

            1. Its an interesting idea though. You have to admit at least. You’d have a whole community making their own games its something that I would want to do.

              1. Yeah, but its not exactly going to make money and neither are the people who make them. Its basically Newgrounds: The Console

                1. Yeah. But they might make a way for developers to charge for dlc or something. I bet they have a plan for making money off of this thing. I can’t wait to hear the rest of the details

      2. LOL ” FREE_TO_PLAY” Until you want better stuff in game its free, after that its more then retail price for a physical copy of a game.

  8. This will be huge. It won’t mess with Nintendo because it won’t be trying to waggle people’s arms or be used as your guide devices, but it will definitely compete with Sony and Microsoft. The XBOX modding community is huge.

    1. Yes, you’re always so positive. Waggle peoples arms. Its called immersive gameplay. Go play Skyward Sword and you’ll fully understand

    1. Exactly. I dont see what their business plan was for this. They’ll make $99 for each console, but if people can just hack the game, thats all the money theyll make

    2. I call bullshit! – You talk shit. Games will be played, just you wait…you’ll eat words like a pile of hard shit lying on the ground, where it then mushes inside your mouth.

    1. ^ this
Its a good tool for indie developers, but, its not exactly going to compete with consoles

  9. In all honesty, none of the provided info appeals to me. With every game being free to play, I can’t help but doubt the quality of them, especially the ones that require you to make “in-game purchases.”
The fact that it’s “made to hack” makes me think it’s a do-it-yourself console.
I just get the feeling it’s going to be a huge platform for nothing but flash games and emulators.
Maybe I’m just being a downer but do not want.

  10. Sounds interesting! But ill probably stick with my next gen wii U and xbox 720. But if I ever get the know how of programing games, I may get this thing. If it takes off sales wise.

  11. It sounds interesting, though I don’t get the feeling it was made to compete with the Big 3 (hell, you only need to look at these comments to realise all people care about is brandnames, in order to compete you need a fuckton of money in order to attract well-known brands), the title is very misleading.

The “in-game purchases” sound like a premium store system like one used in many MMO games, though I’m not sure how it’d work with a…well, what is this? A sandbox games console? It sounds like it’ll be as good as the amount of work customers put into it. Might be interesting, there’s been a boom in indie games lately and all.

  12. i’d say it has a chance out there… a $99 console with free games sounds like a pretty good deal, though in-game purchases probably wouldnt really balance any kind of online play

  13. Holy Sh**! if this is real……It would ruin every console and gaming company out there….Think about it, Imagine if you could get any game on it for free and maybe the only thying you pay for is monthly online service or just service in general (sorta like cable or somthing). It would change gaming as we know it! Plus it is built to be hacked! Thats means people could do anything they want, even port games from the Wii U and new Xbox and Playstation onto the thing!! :O

  14. Davin (aka Platinum Lucario)

This is brilliant! I’m so glad that there’s console coming out that will be open to people hacking it and modifying it to their own purposes. And wow, free games! This is wonderful, I’m sure this will make the right-winged gaming companies rethink their strategy.

Games should actually be free and downloadable rather than being manufactured and costing the companies thousands of dollars to make an optical disc.

Free games are going to change the world FOREVER! And I’m so looking forward to this. ^^

    1. The name is kinda lame, but now that I think about it…can fans of a console called the Wii really argue that? lol

Anyways, this sounds interesting conceptually. Doesn’t seem to be trying to compete with Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft though. Not sure why the title says that.

      1. I never understood people’s scorn for the name Wii. Especially people who like Xbox. Wii is at least easy to say and gives the sense “We”, so you can sort of understand the concept. Xbox is probably the worst named of the well known consoles ever.

  15. From the look of some of the comments, John Dorian has been ripping into people who dislike this new console.

  16. Reblogged this on Nii-Teiko and commented:
hmmm. interesting potentially dangerous idea for the other already established players (no pun intended – promise) home gaming. again we see the near freemium model being used in conjunction with Android

but correct me if I’m wrong…is not that a blatant rip-off of the Xbox Dashboard aka Metro UI?

    The Almighty’s Blessings

    1. I somehow doubt that. Crysis’ development is way too expensive to make it a ftp game, they will make loss no matter how many ads and in-game purchases they have. In my eyes the idea sounds interesting, but i think the games will be more like Apps or so. Also i don’t want another marked messed up by Google’s crap.

  17. What caught my eye about this is the fact it comes with a dev kit. I’d be very interested in giving game design a go but in-game adverts sounds lame. I think the game designed by people should be seperate from adverts so that the community can see if they like it and perhaps develop it further, just imagine if this console sold half as well as one of the other big three and all the consumers worked on one big awesome game. That would surely be the biggest development team ever and the game would be kick ass and free. Plus the consumers would get a sense of real accomplishment that I don’t think is possible from trophies and such.

  18. This is in no way a competitor to the 3 other consoles. It’s a totally different concept that appeals to another audience than Xbox and Playstation. As long as core gamers remain graphics-fetishists they won’t buy Ouya just because of the fact a $99 console can’t support any engine or whatever.

  19. Wow… the only plus here is that Android runs emulators of systems that put out actual games. Android games are not games, they are apps. And most are lame. Good luck. Why not just plug my tablet into the port on my TV? Oh wait, I can already do that….

  20. I think this is going to definitely compete with wii u. I think that the games on this will be simalar to the gaming apps on iphone meant for casual gamers. Most people who buy Nintendo consoles are casual gamers so I think Nintendo should be in trouble.
