Tekken Boss ‘Would Maybe Quit Namco’ If He Had To Deal With Paid DLC

Katsuhiro Harada, the boss behind the Tekken series, is not a fan of paid DLC (downloadable content). The upcoming Tekken Tag Tournament 2 features DLC characters but, according to Harada, all of them will be available for free. Harada expressed his stance on paid DLC, during an interview with Eurogamer, by saying, “If I was given the choice to include paid DLC or quit Namco, I would maybe quit.” Video games can be quite expensive, so free DLC is more than welcome.

“Actually this is something my bosses have been asking me for quite a while now – what are our plans for DLC? How much money can we make? They are a company, obviously, in it to make money. So it’s something I’m continually asked even now. But I haven’t changed my stance. If you’re making a fighting game, all of the elements necessary to enjoy it should be on the disc, or should at least be available for free.”

“If I was given the choice to include paid DLC or quit Namco, I would maybe quit… Or maybe I would just say ‘get someone else to deal with this.”

      1. he is boss, its his decision to have DLC or not, if his executive forces him to do it (well lets be honest DLC are somewhat good if not paid) he will then quit.

        1. NO, he only directed the game, if a high executive from the board of director propose that tekken will have DLC as a way to enchace the reveneues and all people agree, he must will be forced to do it or quit….

That is a good and firm decision, and as a member of the ‘SMASH Team’ will be good having people like him with Sakurai(who love to put secret but free content in his games)

    1. Wow. The 1st time I see a comment from you that does not really fit to your avatar. Your picture normally always fits to your comments.

  1. I don’t mind paying for DLC if it comes much later than the game’s release, but I hate when there’s premium DLC from day one, especially if it’s already on the disc.
I’m not really sure what the point of having free DLC from day one is since it just means people without an internet connection have a harder time getting it.

    1. Come on you cant be serious!? If the guy doesnt want you to pay for his DLC than dont complain!!! Im not complaining! Tekken is a must have for me and I wont have to pay for the DLC! I’m so psyched!

  2. The Only Pokemon Champ

    This is off topic but
    guys
    is alba new?
Ive been on this blog for about a year but I havent heard of him till recently

        1. The Only Pokemon Champ

He seems a little out there
your usually so formal with your posts
but alba speaks his own mind
seems like he it a truly loyal nintendo fan

        2. What an honor for alba to be working for this awesome site!
I only know alba and you now Sickr. Who else works here?

  3. He should make it so that you get only one random character when you buy the game (for $60) and if you want to play with more characters you need to pay $10 for a new one.

  4. What a legend. I dont mind paying for DLC, as long as the price is reasonable for what im getting.

  5. COOL NINTENDO GIRL

Note he said “maybe” and not “never”

If they throw enough money at him, he will stay.

  6. for paid then he shouldn’t think only with money but with points/coins (whatever for each company) as some like coins from nintendo are earned, he should think of a way to get around the “paid” part and have each region/company earn points/coins or whatever that have an equal value like 10pts=$1, obviously it may be more but its an example and you can earn multiple ways, surveys like club nintendo, in game and transferring to points. i hope he doesn’t quit but then its his choice

  7. I know where this guy is coming from, however I feel DLC can work. If there is something you genuinely could be added to improve the game after its been released, then yeah go ahead. However, I’m not a fan of how DLC is being normally used today, DLC that’s on the disk from the start and you need to preorder it or buy it from a certain store. I’m also not a fan of Ninty’s route either, where both we and they know that DLC is coming before the game is even released and that Ninty thinks releasing DLC is this huge deal

  8. If it’s well- developed, actually a good amount of content, and actually made after the game, the DLC should have a price. If it’s small and only offers small changes to the game, the DLC should be free.
    That’s how I see things.

      1. I never said anything about him specifically, I know DLC for a fighting for a fighting game isn’t the best idea. I’m not being critical and I respect his decision.

  9. I LOVE YOU!
I just hate dlc. If you buy a game for the full price you should get every thing and not 60% and pay $230 for the other 40%.

  10. I just bought Tekken Prime, I’ll DL the PSN Tekken games, and I’ll buy Tag 2 simply because of this man’s stance and they *deserve* to be supported for it.

(If you also do so, be sure to email/blog/Twitter NAMCO if you do the same.)

  11. Lets hope none of the higher-ups at Namco get a little too greedy and start forcing DLC on us. From what he’s saying it’s like its not for him to decide whether or not a game recieves downloadable content.
