Nintendo EAD (Entertainment Analysis and Development) is responsible for some of the most influential video game franchises in history including Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, Metroid, Pikmin and The Legend of Zelda. It’s great to see IGN awarding Nintendo to be Number 1 – which I totally agree.
However, the rest of the list is just so abnormal. They put infinity ward (Call of Duty) OVER Retro Studios, Game Freak, Intelligent Systems. REALLY MAN?
Infinity Ward, the company that doesn’t add a music volume button to their games. They also don’t change the menu at all, bunch of lazy scamming people.
Talking about CoD of course, Elite was a scam. And everything about the game is gay, no music button? Really..? I have 15 year old games with that feature.

Infinity Ward no longer exists (well the creative minds). The people who brought the world COD 4 and MW2 left IW and went on to making Respawn Entertainment after being cheated by Activision.
If anything they should be dead last. They are the exact opposite of innovation. I like FPS’s and have nothing against anyone who enjoys COD, but they definitely do not deserve to be above Retro, and Intelligent Systems.
To be fair, CoD 4 was actually pretty good. After that, a lot of their team left, and that’s why MW2 was so dumb.
TBH, CoD was a great franchise and did a HUGE impact on the game industry. They brought a lot of good things to the industry and changed the way FPS games are played.
The problem start when other developer, instead of taking the core of CoD’s success and replicate it, take everything but the core and make a bad copycat. But it’s not Infinity ward’s fault that other developer see the success of CoD and think “I want piece of that cake”.
Now as they are, they aren’t anything special, but this list isn’t about the current, but rather about all the things they did. That’s why Nintendo is first. They even took the big crash into consideration. We can’t just ignore CoD’s good impact because of the current state of the industry.

I agree. I don’t think it’s fair to give that place to the companies who haven’t been on the gaming market for as long as Nintendo. In that time, they have invented innovative games and consoles for us gamers to enjoy. While what Microsoft and Sony have done is just copying Nintendo with every innovative thing they make.
Sony and Microsoft have done plenty for the gaming industry such as making online gaming mainstream, bringing and making dual-analog sticks a standard, etc.
While Nintendo has done more, it’s because they were around longer and were formed during the early years of gaming so they were able to introduce a lot of new things.

IGN used to be more positive about Nintendo when they had Mat Casamassina running the Nintendo side of things, it felt like it was worth going to IGN then.
Activision is a publisher; they just fund developers and manage games, not make games themselves. And Microsoft has made hardly any games.

Among various articles outside of their Nintendo Team, it comes down to two things: Gamescoop (particularly Charles Oynett) and Girlfight, two podcasts which are consistently willing to bash the company.
In addition, a lot of people called Matt Casamassina and Mike Bozon leaving “the end of IGN’s good years,” even though I was personally a fan of Craig Harris (who also awarded Super Mario Galaxy 2 a 10/10). Even now, despite the current Nintendo Executive Editor, Richard George, sometimes being overcritical (though he has stated he couldn’t cover a better company, and Jack Devries is much worse about this), Audrey Drake is quite clearly a Nintendo fan. Even if her headlines can be more sensational than necessary, her passion for Nintendo comes through.
