Miyamoto Wants Metroid & Star Fox On Wii U

Nintendo is working on both traditional and brand-new games for Wii U. If he had to choose, legendary designer Shigeru Miyamoto’s top two franchises that he wants on Wii U are Metroid and Star Fox. Miyamoto “feels like the possibilities of the GamePad for Metroid could be really fantastic.” Miyamoto didn’t confirm whether these games are in development but revealed that, out of all Nintendo franchises, he “personally” wants the Star Fox franchise most on Wii U.

“With Metroid it’s very easy to imagine some interesting implementation for Wii U. I think that having another screen with the gyro built in really gives you a lot of interesting opportunities for development, and we can bring a lot of our games to life in a completely unique way with that.”

“I feel like the possibilities of the GamePad for Metroid could be really fantastic,” Miyamoto told me at a different point in our conversation. “There’s certainly a lot that you could do there for that game.”

        1. Metroid. Does. Not. Need. Blood. &. Gore. To. Be. Good.
          How many different people have I told this to in the past few months? It’s starting to sicken me that people actually NEED these as selling points.-_-;;

          1. Id hate it if it had blood and gore…first of all, her weapons are energy based, just burn patches and holes would be as far as it would go. The most i’ll accept is it a space pirate stabs someone, that would make sense.
Second, in 3, you rip tentacles and all sorts off with the grapple, so its kinda got gord anyway, just not over the top stupid gore.
Third, we dont need it, because its just a dumb novelty. So agree with you 100%

              1. But that dead hijacked ship in Prime 3…oh my god……sooooo good, and you can tell its even better made because you go back there multiple times, and it still creeped me out everytime
                Kudos, Retro

          2. I agree completely. whether or not it has blood and gore has nothing to do with whether or not its a good game. All it does is make it so younger kids and people with weak stomachs cant enjoy it.

          3. I want a survival horror Metroid game. It already has kind of a survival theme, with you often having to find all you’re equipment and starting out with pretty low life, and it would be easy to set up the horror side of it, just have Samus crash land on an uncharted planet and her ship be damaged and she has to look for something to repair it with and build from there, I have faith that Nintendo could do this, they need a more “Adult” aimed series, even if it dosn’t have blood and gore, and Metroid would be perfect for it.

        2. Dont most enemies explode into goo in the metroid Prime games? I remember my visor getting covered a couple of times by it infact.

          1. Yeah but its not like, boom headshot, or chainsaw gore. Plus only the Metroids blow up. Other enemies burn up and disintergrate. Or blow up and melt if its a robot

    1. Wii U is a lot cheaper than Vita.
      Vita + MC + Games = over 400 USD
      Wii U + Games = over 300 USD

        1. Sorry…. no…
Nintendo is far more successful with handhelds, Vita is overpriced and under-supported.

          1. Do explain how the Vita is “overpriced”–I’m willing to bet you can’t. I think the proper term you’re looking for is “Expensive”. The only overpriced handheld was the launch 3DS, that had no justification for its asking price whatsoever. The Vita however has endless amounts of reasons and that is a fact.

        2. The 3DS was in the VITA’s position for a while, but Nintendo did something about it and look at it now. If you look back, that was before in the life cycle of the 3DS that the VITA is and nothing is being done. Software can only push a console so far if the hardware is too expensive.

                    1. Yeah, it’s something that they really lost out on to Nintendo moving from 6th gen, to 7th. Microsoft seem to be picking it up, but at the same time are going off on their own, away from gaming, and focusing on media in general.

                  1. Exactly. The PS2 wasn’t the most powerful system, but it’s currently the best-selling console of all time (although the DS was a very close second, but if you exclude handhelds, then the PS1 was second).

                    1. The DS is still gaining on the PS2, not even a million less sold. The PS2 hardly even sells more than 2-3 thousand a week worldwide, the DS is still selling far more than that.

  1. Nice! Hope he stays influential a couple more years! I’m getting a Wii U for Christmas and I’m buying cousin’s 6-core 3.9 GHz gaming computer.

  2. Awesome, Metroid is probably my favorite franchise ever along side Zelda. My mind still makes us awesome ideas for a WiiU version.
And Star Fox is also awesome, and it neeeeds a good reboot/sequel.
Cmon Retro, show us your game!!

    1. I dont think they’ll do that again…haha
Personal, i think Retro is doing Star Fox, and Nintendo will make Metroid, maybe get a Metroid with more influence from Super Metroid, that title screen still gives me chills, best intro/titles screen ever made.

    2. Actually, Team Ninja was not the one to blame for Other M. It was…Nintendo. My blood ran cold as I said that.

    3. Metroid other M wasn’t a bad game! i know there are some issues like Samus behavior and music, but i think the rest of the game was enjoyable, i would not mind team ninja making another Metroid.

      1. There is nothing wrong with Samus’ behavior. Music could have been better, then again Metroid has never been very succesful music wise except for 3 or 4 themes. The only problem with Other M was its linear level design; it doesn’t focus on exploration nearly as much as older Metroid games. Oh, and its cheap Hard Mode…

    4. UGH! Team Ninja only did the gameplay and cinematics! Sakamoto was the one who wrote the entire story.

      1. False, cinematics were made by a caompany that makes CG in Japan. The story was indeed written by Sakamoto san, which in my opinion was one of the saving aspects of the game. The combat was broken by the evasive move, and the ability to heal and recover missiles whenever you want. The use of different items for exploration has been the most shallow in any Metorid game. I hope they fix those problems, and give 3rd person Metroid another try.

  3. Since Miyamoto said he wants these games on the wii u it pretty much guranteed that they are going make them and i hope for and fzero game too.

      1. good. but if the wiiu’s life cycle ends and there’s no fzero game I can only imagine the amount of people who will get pissed off.

  4. Of course he wants Star Fox more. He didn’t create Metroid and rarely has anything to do with it. I like Samus a lot because … okay, it’s because I like action girls … even though she’s a genocidal maniac determined to wipe-out an entire race. I could definitely go for a Star Fox game as well though as long as there are control options. I could easily play the game using B for bombs and A for fire, but I’d much rather use B for fire and Y for bombs or Y for fire and B for bombs because that’s much more comfortable for me.

    1. An entire race of killing machines….would it be wrong if Ripley killing every Xenomorph in Aliens?
Samus is a badass with a tough exterior but she has a heart, saving the galaxy as much as she can, even if it means bending the rules, and makin tough decisions, to make her parents proud. Thats such a good character…, thats why Other M sucked balls compared to the rest. “oh no, not Ridley, ive only killed him 6 times, im going to have a panic attack and cry, help me Adam”…Give me a break, Team Ninja…

      1. When will people learn there’s actually a good reason Samus was afraid of Ridley’s resurrection? She thought she permanently killed him in Super Metroid. She defeated him, and later Planet Zebes was destroyed, and the remaining Space Pirates were gone. How could Ridley be resurrected? That same question was racing through Samus’s heart as her inner child screams.

Think about it, the Other M Samus is the exact same Samus we all know and love, just showing more of her character. In addition, Samus also showed her side of being fearful in Metroid Fusion, and yet none bickered about that. So, why pick on Other M and yet spare Fusion? That makes no sense.

(For the record, I’ve never actually played Fusion, but I’d love to)

        1. Yeah but i doubt she’d break down, she just kinda seemed pathetic. In Fusion you do hide and run away but thats because theres a clone of you trying to killing you with the ice beam haha

          1. Alright, last post! lol. So you think that where a character breaks down is a bad thing? Or a sign of permanent weakness? Don’t you think those are opportunities for the author to show the characters in a deeper way? With its true colors? I don’t think you would make a very good writer my friend.

  5. Yes
    Yes
    Yes
Beautiful. Star fox assualt was good but to fast. We need new star fox, metroid, F-zero, and also earthbound

    1. Yes to all 4, but i also want to see a damn Pokemon on WiiU….Game Freak, why do you hate us!?

            1. I know, its probably THE most requested game ive seen, besides Earthbound but that aint happening :|

              1. It wont happen because they want the main series Pokemon games to remain on handhelds. I mean, if it wasn’t just on handhelds, then Nintendo would need a new series to sell handhelds like Pokemon does. And that would be difficult.

  6. Calum Nicholson-Walker

A Star Fox game on the Wii U with Shigsy at the helm would be incredible. And please, make it another on rails shooter. I have nothing wrong with a series trying to innovate itself, but Zelda knock-offs and strategy games I really don’t think are the way to go. Assault was a step in the right direction, but was way too short and was really at its pinnacle when in the Arwing.

  7. As long as they make Samus a bad-ass bounty hunter again, and not a pathetic girl with daddy issues. They almost killed the franchise for me with Other M, one more like that and it will be another series that will be collecting dust.

      1. What, because the older Metroid games didn’t have good stories? Of course they did, and they didn’t have to kill Samus’ character in the process.

        1. Why do people say Other M killed Samus’s character? And yet they leave Fusion alone for this one? Fusion showed more of Samus’s character. Besides, she followed stricter orders in Fusion than Other M. At least, I think it’s like that. (I only say “I think” because I’ve never actually played Fusion, but at least I get the basics of its story)

      2. The gameplay wasnt even that great, i felt like i was barely doing anything, just tapped the dpad all the time.
And the story and the way Samus aas portrayed was pathetic. She needs to be more like Female Shepard from Mass Effect, get Jennifer Hale to voice her, Nintendo!

  8. Yes! Star Fox is dying for a reboot and Metroid is a given. If the new Star Fox game is half as fun as Star Fox 64, it’s going to be legendary. Leave luck to heaven.

  9. Star Fox would be great but I really really REALLY hope Retro is working on a new Prime game for Wii U. I feel like Wii U is the perfect system for it. A new Hunters game for 3DS wouldn’t be bad either.

  10. À mix between lylat Wars and starfox adventures !!!
And for metroid … He knows What to do !!!
Great with gamepad ! He’s really brilliant !
    But DO IT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!¡¡¡!!!!!!!!!¿?????¿
    Im goin crazy !!!

  11. Metroid is a franchise Nintendo needs to focus on, especially the prime series if shooter continue to dominate next generation.

    1. But Metroid shouldn’t BE a shooter. Primes were good, but we’ve had 3 of those. Time to take Metroid back to where it came from: 2d adventure. Do it like Rayman Legends, only with darker more creepy/moody tones and tight controls, like an HD updated version of Super Metroid (with a new story an such, of course).

      1. I agree with the darker atmosphere, i want that Super Metroid title screen feeling back. But as 2D, i dont think they could use the WiiU to its full capabilites. Id prefer a 3rd person view, but make the game play more similar to the 2D, like the run and gun, and the speed boost, but with aiming, like Other M shouldve been.

All for a 2D Metroid on 3DS though, anything similar to Fusion would be amazing

      2. Marketing wise it makes sense, Metroid Prime games LOOK like shooters. It would be good to have something like them to get the “hardcore” (most aren’t really hardcore gamers but call them selves that cause they think they’re cool for playing shooters) onto the Wii U then after the make 2d games now that they’re hooked on the franchise.

  12. Oh please, oh please, I want these developed for the Wii-U. Even on the Wii’s limited hardware, they created pretty damn good games, they can only get better in the future.

    1. I found both of those games to be good. I honestly found Star fox Assault to be my favorite in the series, the DS one is actually the worst Star Fox.

  13. Make it happen now nintendo! :D I’m sorry I just love star fox its my favorite franchise of all time :D

  14. what we need besides metroid and starfox is f-zero, the last one was in 2003 for gamecube which btw is awesome, hard (emerald & diamond cups and some chapters) but awesome. climax is japan only and for gba and that’s almost a 10 year gap. so what im trying to say is to include f-zero

    1. In no other game did they make this much of an effort to dleevop her personality and backstory as this game, so that’s a moot point. However, if you are indeed trying to use all the other games as a validation for this case, that doesn’t make much sense either, because it just makes her weakness to be all that more out of character and inconsistent. IMHO, her emotional state in this game would have been more fitting in a prequel, before she has been hardened by experience.

  15. Oh does he now? Well, welcome to the fucking collective, sir. You should have launched with one of those games instead of NintendoLand. Good j0rb.

    1. Oh my god, stop fucking complaining about everything!
You might not know this, but, games, realllly good ones, take time to be made!
Its not a 1-2 year developement cycle lime COD or the way AC went.
We WILL get these games, be it at launch, a few months after, early 2013, or mid way. Geez.

        1. They were still made with a very small production time. Brotherhood was ok, but nothing compared to 2. Id burn my copy of Revelations if it wasnt digital, awful game, so many things wrong with it

        1. I think it look like a ship id expect Sylux from Hunters to have, same colour, sane design. Although im still curios why it was following her haha

  16. This is why he’s the man. He’s the only fucking person at Nintendo these days who has the balls to admit he wants the two games from the two franchises that NOBODY SEEMS TO WANT TO TALK ABOUT THESE DAYS. THOSE FUCKERS.

  17. Oh, and since he’s saying this, we should expect a Metroid or Star Fox title announcement very soon for the Wii U. Or both.

    1. At least one of those is from Retro. Apparently they pulled from E3 because they werent ready, so looking forward to TGS very much. Maybe they’ll surprise us and make it a launch window title. The WiiU doesnt really have THAT game at the moment, not that there arent any good ones, but the Wii had Zelda, thats tough to beat for a launch title

  19. A new Metroid Prime would be great. Leave the first-person Metroids to consoles and side-scrollers to to handhelds, I say.

  20. I’ll happily accept a new Metroid game as long as it isn’t first-person. That’s the biggest reason why I hated Metroid Prime.

Star Fox absolutely needs a new entry, perhaps more than any other Nintendo franchise at the moment.

  21. Star fox was ruined and miyamoto has disgraced mr. Gunpie yoku metriod franchise with metriod other m smh metriod doesnt even sell well it should be put out of its misery

    1. Well if you feel Starfox was ruined its because the last few weren’t made by Nintendo…… having companies like Rare and Namco on a main franchise was always a bad idea in my opinion. As for that Miyamoto comment of him ruining Metroid with Other M……..ummmm he had nothing to do with Other M at all. It was written by the co creator of Metroid and again was a title not made by Nintendo but by Team Ninja.

    2. Star Fox wasnt ruined, Assualt was a great game, just not upto standard. And i actually liked Adventrue, wasnt Star Fox, but was a good game. Plus we got Krystal, i never had a problem with her.

And Miyamoto didnt have any part of Other M, and Metroid wont die, its Metroid.

      1. It’ll keep coming back, the same way Ridley comes back again and again, even though youve killed him about…5 times.

  22. @captain n really? I thought team ninja said it was nintendos fault? Anyways ive played starfox adventure and It didnt feel like starfox. Starfox should be like destination earthstar. Metriod died when they went shooter imo im tired of cod type games

    1. Metroid Prime is NOTHING like COD. It focuses much more on exploration than shooting, which, like the sidescrollers, is only to defeat enemies when you get to them.

    2. Lmao Metroid died when it became a shooter like COD?
Haaahahahahahahahahahahaha…ohhhh dear, Prime was a fantastic series. Metroid wont stay 2D, it may go back to it on 3DS, but it’ll be 3D, just maybe stay in 3rd person

I’m so happy I always believed he didn’t, ever since the 2012 E3

  27. Metroid: make 2 like you’re doing with Smash- console= 3D 1st person, handheld= sidescroller (with 3D elements?)
Star Fox: maybe we can fly something other than an Arwing sometimes? New vehicles weapons and an enemy that one can take seriously would also take the franchise from ‘good’ to ‘Wow… they weren’t kidding around with this one!’

  29. Here is the plot for Star Fox on Wii U …

One day, Krystal gets bored of flying and goes to work for a porn mag.
Then Andross buys all the magazines and wanks himself to death.

Then Krystal goes missing, and Fox is upset because he aint getting no pussy whilst she is gone.

Fox flies across the universe to try and find Krystal, but is so frustrated at not having any sex, he fucks slippy Toad up the arse and gets a disease.

Now Fox must find Krystal and Fuck her hard before he drops dead.

    Oh yeah,
There will be a mini-game where you have to stop Panther from talking, by ramming your cock in his mouth so he chokes on warm salty fox-cum
    Its called “Black Pussy Overload”
