Although Nintendo will sell Wii U Gamepads separately in Japanese retailers, Nintendo of America’s director of PR, Marc Franklin, revealed that Nintendo will not be selling Wii U GamePads as standalone products in North America. Franklin claims that if Nintendo were to sell separate Wii U GamePads, it would confuse consumers as there are no announced games that support two of them.
The only apparent way to obtain a second Wii U GamePad is to purchase one directly from Nintendo of America.
Ok
go to hell
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
When 1 breaks, what do we do!?
you probably call the 1800 that nintendo has and see how to get a replacement.
Buy one from Nintendo of America, like it says in the article…
DON’T WORRY GUYS! Nintendo said that if it breaks, they will resupply one free of charge!
Hahaha THANK YOU
“…there are no announced games that support two of them.”
Why do you care?
it’s true their really is NO reason to have 2 (as of right now anyway)
when you read, you find out answers:
“The only apparent way to obtain a second Wii U GamePad is to purchase one directly from Nintendo of America.”
last line of the article there, chief.
oh sorry.
Hmm… well, hopefully if we begin getting games that can use two, they’ll sell them elsewhere.
Wtf Nintendo? WHY ARE YOU GUYS SO STUPID??
The only stupid one here is you! Aren’t you that dumb trolling asshole that’s always talking shit abut Nintendo? So why do you care if they people can’t buy a gamepad from retailers? Like it says in the Article if you even bothered reading it, YOUR friends (cause i’m guessing you ain’t buying a Wii U yourself) can get a second tablet directly from Nintendo themselves. I don’t know why you’re all butt hurt about it…wait a minute, you are gonna buy a Wii U aren’t ya! Hahaha busted bro!
Successful troll was successful
You’re an idiot. Our controller broke and we can’t go out and buy a new one. That’s bullshit. So shut your yap. The only person trolling is you.
Good. I bet many stupid people here would buy it thinking its the actual console because of the price.
That is a good point.
ikr xD LOL
Typical DUH American. I hope we Europeans get it in store shelves though.
I doubt it will be the case for you either. There are idiots livibg everywhere and your football mums are going to by the controller thinking it will work for Wii :P
that’s stupid. that must be changed.
your right nintendo needs 4 tablet controlers
nice sorry but true some trolls and stupid ppl wil buy it
and the trollz would make a vid lolzwtfit doe snot workz with my wiiz
Stupid people will buy the Wii U
I’m pretty sure that microsoft fans will buy the wii u.
hi there microsoft xbox 720 will have 7 inch tablet controlers
PC gamers are too narrow minded for consoles.
im primarily a pc gamer, and i just preordered a wii u……
Faith in PC gamers restored :) But obv. I mean the masterrace PC gaming trolls (such as the guy above) who trolls this page day and night, morning and evening <__<
i hate it when people feel the need to have align themselves to a certain brand, no matter what it is. whether it be shoes, clothes, food, or in this case video games. it’s stupid, and those people miss out on a lot of great things because of it
ness isn’t a pc gamer. he has an xbox. don’t take his word for it, it’s obvious he doesn’t know about about pc gaming.
yeah more btablet controlers on ther way
So you’re buying it?
All I need is one. And with good care, I shouldn’t have to worry about replacing it.
yeah that’s all, eventually some people can have an accident….if is it happend to me i’m fucked up because i live in latin america….and there’s no “nintendo of america” in my country
Better not fuck this controller up
no kidding LOL XD
You guys are the reason why NoA chosed to do this -___- Read the article and not only the title ffs…
If mine breaks im fucked because im pretty sure buying one from NoA means using a credit card over the internet which I absolutley refuse to do plus I dont have one in the first place.
HURRRR SO CONFUSING
Ok just a confirmation, Reggie IS NOT joking, right? I dont wanna be sad knowing that i get a 100gb HDD and it doesnt work
http://mynintendonews.com/2012/09/13/reggie-says-you-can-plug-in-a-full-on-three-terabyte-hdd-if-you-want-with-wii-u/
Oh and, do i have to format the cards or anything?
No.
To the Not joking, the formatting cards, or both?
No, you most likely won’t have to reformat your cards, and no, Reggie is not joking about the Wii U supporting those HDD’s.^_^
Thanks!
hi there you can get 160 gb 15,000 rpm cheeta hard drives
But what if you break yours…..idiot!
Then don’t freaking break it!….. Idiot!
People shouldnt expect nintendo to release games that support TWO gamepads , It causes alot of problems with the system and slows it down and drops framerate , Maybe in its few years in its life span they will make it possible with PARTY GAMES and games that aren’t graphically intense but I highly doubt it.
It’s possible now !! but like you say multiplayer is probably running a LOT smoother with 1 gamepad and a pro controller , etc .
this IS NOT a problem , unless retarded .
I wana see a game that doesnt use the gamepad at all…how good would that game look in comparison 0.o
The wii u will have better graphics and FPS in their games if they didn’t have that stupid controller , and the wii U CPU is is doing double the WORK because it displays 2 images ..
Tell me more about how the developers are forced by law to use the Game Pad.
That is what he always forgets about….
Good point , i see know reason why a developer couldn’t do this , even if it meant using the gamepad with a logo on the screen :/ .
1.5GB RAM , potentialy
Thats the thing, everyones like “ooo the gamepad” and yeah, it could reeeally do some great stuff, amazing stuff. But if you cant think of anything, or dont want to, just make the pro controller or wiimote and nunchuck the basic controller.
next gen wii u has too be able too suport 4 tablet controlers were a big apple ipad gamers soo 4 tablet controkers be alwsoume
if the reason is that there are no announced games that support two of them, then they might change their minds in the future if such a game is announced.

Makes sense, if no games support 2 gamepads then why sell them? Only reason I can think of is replacements just in case you break your original.
Goooood, people are stupid outside of Japan, they wont understand.
And if you break a gamepad, you deserve to pay even penny for a new one.
OK, that is good, but what will happen when someone get his gamepad broken? what will happen when someone get his gamepad broken out of USA?
To be honist, it would be kinda dumb for them to sell the game pads in retailers. If they did they will be losing more money to make thousands if not millons of wii u game pad just to put on shelves and not everyone is going to buy a second game pad. It wastes materials and they’ll lose millons. It’s just better for them to make game pads as a stand alone for people who wants it. I know for a fact that’s excactly what they’re thinking.
I’m convinced one Gamepad is enough per console. Two might add a level of fun, but it wouldn’t be worth the cost. I hear the Gamepad is like $149(Equivalent) in Japan.
soo what if i want 4 tablets i should have 4 tablets
I don’t mind. One is good enough for now.
Non-Asians: Too stupid to read, understand common sence and too ask the retailer if the Pad is in the Wii U package.
“Franklin claims that if Nintendo were to sell separate Wii U GamePads, it would confuse consumers as there are no announced games that support two of them.”
Nintendo of America either doesn’t have enough faith in their packaging/design people to create a box that looks different to the main console box, or thinks all their customers are absolute idiots.
Nintendo has always assumed that non-Japanese people (especially Americans) are idiots… Look at Super Mario Bros 2. Even back then they thought the original one would be too hard for the inferior people that do not live in Japan.
But I have to defend them though… Many people here have not even read the full article so they do not think there is a way to replace it…
Seriously I don’t get it. Just put some giant words on the box “WII U GAMEPAD CONTROLLER FOR WII U CONSOLE”
It’s not gonna work, once children (including me) start breaking the controller, Nintendo will change their mind.
Sounds fine to me.
I’ve never had an issue taking care of my controllers in the past and this time will be no different.
Besides, it will reinforce the fact that the pad that comes with the system, will really be the only one you’ll ever truly need for the majority of the great games coming to the system.
What does it have to do with taking care of the controller ?
Ever thought about the possibility that there could be households where more than 1 person wants to play with the WiiU in ? As if it’s not already bad enough that it supports only 2 Gamepads, no, they don’t even let you buy it at retailers… Doesn’t sound too logical to me.

“We have deliberately not announced the availability of the GamePad as a separate, standalone accessory here in the United States,” Fils-Aime told me. “The reason for that is simple – there are no games in the launch window that take advantage of a second GamePad. And [because of that], I want all of that hardware production to be focused on driving sales at retail.
“What I mean by that is that Wii U is a console and a GamePad together. If I were to take additional GamePads and make them available as an accessory, then I would have less Wii U console hardware to sell into retail. You know, probably one of your questions is whether I’m going to meet demand. The only way we’re going to achieve that here in the Americas is to not have that GamePad accessory, so I can maximize my overall volume.”
There are no games that support the use of two pads at the moment so they haven’t announced it as an accessory yet, and because of this and the fact that they want to focus attention on the console for now they will not make it avalible.
He’s not saying never, at least not that I can see. I have no doubt that should the need for two pads come, then it will be met.

Are Americans really that dumb? Can they grasp the concept of a backup controller in Japan but not in America? Wow… pretty lame. I’m sure there’s no kid in the US who is going to accidentally drop this thing and need a replacement faster than customer service can act.
Have you seen typical spoiled american brats?
WTF? I take offense to this!
So Japanese are smart enough to be able to tell the difference between the console and just the controller, but Americans aren’t?
Seriously?
I iz so totally confused 0_x??!!! Durrrr….
I commented on the article about an expensive gamepad in other countries saying I wouldn’t worry until I hear the american price. I guess I’ll just have to wait a while for price, huh?
Makes perfect sense to the American consumers in this economy.

That’s fine. Like he said, there’s no games supporting two controllers. You won’t need one unless it breaks, and Nintendo makes durable hardware, si this won’t be much of a problem for most people.

I get the feeling Nintendo is making “mistakes” just so that what they originally wanted to do will look better by comparison. It’s like with the original 3DS price. They probably deliberately made it so damn high so that its lowered price looks much better. Nintendo’s just basically messing with our perspectives.
Business strategies ;)
Great, so if mine breaks for some reason, I’m screwed. GOOD JOB NINTENDO!
Idiots.
dont worry i will recomand wii u suports 4 game pad tablets thats the selling point why is nintendo not focussing on the biggest selling point of wii u tablet controlers like 3ds only 2d stuff make no use of 3d technolgies microsoft xbox 720 and ps4 will suport 4 tablet controlers
i can see their concern, people might also confuse it for a handheld console. But come on, it would nice to go to target or something to buy a replacement rather than call nintendo!
Once they become cheaper to manufacture and games start taking advantage of there being two they’ll probably release them. If nothing uses two there’s no sense on having two anyways.
