Developer Says Wii U CPU Is A Challenge

Online gaming publication Eurogamer caught up with the developers behind Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper on Wii U to find out what they thought about developing on the console. Akihiro Suzuki, producer of the Dynasty Warriors franchise, claims that the systems weak spot is the CPU, which is slightly less powerful than the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

“One of the weaknesses of the Wii U compared to PS3 and Xbox 360 is the CPU power is a little bit less. So for games in the Warriors series, including Dynasty Warriors and Warriors Orochi, when you have a lot of enemies coming at you at once, the performance tends to be affected because of the CPU.

“Dealing with that is a challenge.”

“While the visuals are great, as is being able to improve them, we had to deal with the lower CPU power and how we can get around that issue.”

“Actually, we’re still working on that. If you see the demo on the show floor and you try it, you’ll probably feel it’s not up to the PS3 level. But we’re working on it!”

      1. I never buy a console because of its specs. I buy it mainly just for ….

        A) It’s exclusive
        B) A lot easier to play in bed or on the lounge than a PC xD

        If I want amazing specs, I’ll just use my PC.

    1. Whatever.
      Even if you’re serious, your preorder will be gone before you walk out of the store.

      WiiU is a Next-Gen Nintendo platform.
      Wii was WAY behind in graphics, and that’s the platform that competed with PS3 and xBox.

      This is no different, except now we have a HD console competing for the console gaming space.

      For every 1 of these developers, there are 5 that love WiiU, and are doing amazing things with it. I don’t need EVERY third party game, just a few of the big ones, and my 1st party Nintendo games.

      1. hardly amazing if its just a map on the screen…and plus most games can be found on current gen platforms with stable online. The wiiU conference excited me but this CPU is just pathetic

    2. Sickr missed this quote in his article…

      “But from a visual standpoint, based on the performance of the Wii U, we knew the game had the capability of having much better graphics than games on PS3 and Xbox 360. Make no mistake, from a visual standpoint, it is able to produce better graphics. So our challenge was to make a higher quality graphics. We were able to meet that.”

      1. Exactly !!!! It’s just a low power consuming beast . The gpgpu is probably clocked really high !!! . The wiiu will have better graphics than those 2 , it has modern architechture which once people unlock will be much easier to create better graphics for .

        The cpu is probably clockec 2.8 – 3.0ghz

        1. We already know the RAM has blown the old consoles away to the high heavens . It’s operating system has twice as much as the ps3 .
          I am going to put my money on an incredible GPU or what ever the fuck a gpgpu is . Clocked at twice or more than current gen .

          1. But it’s some games will still be limited by the weak CPU. Even if the GPU has power to render/display 100 highly detailed characters, you will see slow downs because the CPU will not handle that many AI.
            So, they can’t find any “hidden power”, they might cut the amount of characters on screen at once, make the AI dumber, and/or change the in-game physics. It will affect gameplay for games that need CPU power.

            1. basically it comes down to how the developers leverage the system. From what i understand, developers havent been programming games on consoles to work with a ggpu…not sure whether the ps3 or 360 have ggpu’s. but its been my understanding that with those systems, the cpu is doing the grunt work. Where on the wiiu, you have the ggpu to crunch some of the workload normally done by the cpu. So yeah, it could be that the cpu is a bit weaker. But nintendo have that extra processor on the graphics “card” to make up for those weaknesses.

              I just doubt any of the developers are taking advantage of that when either porting games to the wiiu or trying to develop something quickly for the launch window.

              give it a year before the cpu “issue” becomes nonexistent to developers. They just need time to adapt to the new system

      Go and cancel it you easily manipulated person. Doesn’t hurt to have more pre-orders. People who actually know about the GPGPU (No, I did not misspell GPU, go look up GPGPU.), would realize that the GPGPU is going to do a lot of the CPU work.

      1. Depending on the GPGPU to compensate for the CPU might become a handicap similar to the PS3 and its Cell processor. It may result in amazing things coming from internal teams and even exclusive third-party offerings, but it may get the worst ports if the developers don’t know how to deal with it.

        I hope these guys still have an earlier devkit and that the final build has some more CPU speed.

        1. well, depending on the gpu, you dont need to rely as much on the cpu. if you look at things like physx, it’s generating things like tessellation and adaptive vsync, of which you would normally think a processor would do that, but the gpu is the one doing most of the work. what’s funny is that the way the ps3 works is seemingly the exact opposite of how the wii u is going to work. where the ps3 is mainly just processor based, the wii u will be mainly gpu based. being gpu based will make things a lot easier for developers starting out in comparison to the cell processor on the ps3.

          1. Yeah, but it may be an issue for tasks that are more CPU intensive than GPU. The devs will have to make use of the GPGPU, which I’m not sure all of them will do as best as possible.

            Unless this was fixed, it may mean a PS3 situation: Great exclusives and port quality depending heavily on the developer’s effort.

            1. well, the thing with this is, it’s not as different as the ps3. the ps3 was using a completely new form of processor that absolutely no one knew how to use and had to figure it out, but with the wii u, they have to optimize there games to be more gpu intensive rather than cpu. however it may be a hurdle, it’s not near the hurdle that the ps3 was at launch.

    4. This is untrue. Yes in number it may have a weaker CPU, but the Wii U is coded differently than say a xbox 360 and ps3 (which use a system that is so old it feels like the cavemen used it). Ubisoft (who is very experienced developing for Wii U) is releasing assassins creed 3. Which on the regular version for ps3 and 360 can model up to 2500 NPC’s in one single sequence. This is a result of the engine they are using. With Wii U, they were able to get it to support up to 5000 NPC’s without any effort put in. Where as the 360 and ps3 are struggling to run AC3 to its fullest. (argo the 2500 limit, which is unfortunately put on wii u to make it fair). The Wii U is newer technology. If you take the best computer from 2005, and put it against the worst computer with 2015 tech in it. The newer computer will be better by default. The Wii u is different though. The Wii U hosts 2012-2013 hardware, that is NOT the weakest of its generation, but fairly strong. Until you can put out the money to buy a Wii U, bring it home, take it apart, and shove ps3 or xbox 360 hardware inside (which is impossible because ps3 and xbox 360 are HUGE compared to Wii U) and then smash the top with a hammer, you cannot say that it is a weak/weaker system than current generation in any way. It is clearly superior.

      Get N or get out!!!!

    1. You should listen to the ones that have been developing games for the WiiU. Because the ones that haven’t worked with the system are most likely lyin.

  1. They don’t understand how to use the Wii U GPGPU yet. As far as I’ve heard, the Wii U’s GPU is able to take on some of the functions usually handled by the CPU. As we get deeper into it, developers will figure out how to maximize this. Their game does look pretty good so far though. Leave luck to heaven.

    1. you understand it, the problems is that they don’t know how to work with the gpgpu. if the clock speed is just al little bit slower, then they must use the gpgpu better to make the cpu better. so don’t pannic peeps, it will be way better!!

  2. i still find it hard to believe that the wii-u cpu would be weaker than a 6(!) year old cpu
    heck any decent notebook cpu nowadays has more power than any available desktop cpu 6 years ago… and with IBM at their backs they have a supplier for very efficient and powerful CPU technology that doesn’t have to hide from the likes of intel i5 and i7
    maybe it’s just because the developers haven’t gotten to terms with the devkit yet

      1. One of the main reasons the Wii didnt get 3rd party support was becase of controller mapping. The Wiimote and Nunchuck just didnt have enough buttons. It is did, alot of developers could just scale the games on. Remember when Capcom said they could “run” RE5 on the Wii? Oh, but the engine’s runnin on 2 3DS games…

          1. um yeah, they used an altered version of the re5 engine on the two resident evil games on the 3ds….and why are you still on this site?

  3. The only reason i care about specs are graphics. Which only just increase the game experience a little(action adventure). I dont think it helps fps so i dont care for that which is 60 of so called multiplat. But the wiiu might spark my interest(zombiu) again.

  4. Aeolus likes to suck off monkey dicks, and the monkey is Icy Dead People, and they also seem to be a idiots

    HERE COME THE TROLLS! EVERYONE, DO NOT COMMENT, AND LET THEM DIE OUT, JUST LIKE FIRE!

    1. Aeolus likes to suck off monkey dicks, and the monkey is Icy Dead People, and they also seem to be a idiots

      Oh, yeah, just a reminder for people, this is a 300-350$ console that does not make Nintendo any losses. If you were expecting amazing specs out of such a sum, or if you are even disappointed, get the fuck out, or learn to use logic.

    1. Amen i agree with you and reggie fils-aime even said it in a press conference that nintendo is not a computer based company its a game console based company that focuses on the experience of the user rather than the graphics aspect of it. i will never turn my back on nintendo i will keep my preorder.

  5. Well this is might be a problem though. It’s only one aspect of the Wii U and even developers of the PC put ports of their games on the PS3 and Xbox despite being less powerful. So yeah only need to see what Sony and Microsoft would choose for power. Being affordable but contending with the Wii U, being more powerful and release soon, and wait out for the parts to be affordable and release more powerful systems later.

    1. Aeolus likes to suck off monkey dicks, and the monkey is Icy Dead People, and they also seem to be a idiots

      One word: GPGPU. Seriously, why are people freaking out so much? Do you really think Nintendo would do such a thing as put in an inferior CPU without putting something else in, that compensates for the lacking CPU? They’ve been in the industry for too long than to do such a mistake.

  6. Look at all the idiots here pretending to know what they’re talking about. Just give it, Wii U is an embarrassment in specs like the Wii.

      1. Fail? Hardly, you Nintendo fanboys will continue to close your eyes to facts. While, I don’t, especially when I suck someone’s dick!

          1. Trying to tell me “I don’t know what a GPGPU is”, classic. That has a lot to do with this argument.

            But you wouldn’t know what type of CPU the 360 uses either or what areas does PS3’s Cell still beat a modern core i7 in. Come on, let’s see you put smarts to work mr.gamer *cough* NINTENDRONE *cough.

                1. If it’s not relevant to the discussion, then I am not inclined to answer it. Don’t know why you can’t comprehend it or why you feel the need to derail the discussion with it as if it’s affecting your life.

            1. CHIP NAME | CLOCK SPEED -> THEORETICAL -> [ACTUAL]
              Intel Core i7 980 XE | 3.33 GHz -> 107.55 GFLOPS -> [99 GFLOPS]
              Intel Core i7 920 | 3.4 GHz -> 80+ GFLOPS -> [69 GFLOPS]
              Broadway (Wii) | 729 MHz -> 2.4 GFLOPS
              Cell (PS3) | 3.2 GHz -> 230.4 GFLOPS* -> [20.8 GFLOPS]
              Xenon (360) | 3.2 GHz -> 96 GFLOPS -> [well below 57.6 GFLOPS**]
              Power 7 (Wii U) | 3 GHz -> 99.36 GFLOPS -> [between 95-98 GFLOPS***]

              I only compare Gigaflops (and actual values only). Wii U’s got a bit less than double the 360 and around 5x the Cell. Yes, a bit less GHz, but so what? Judge by dem flops, sonny boy or should I say “Sony” boy?

      1. You don’t even know to what extend does GPGPU does additional processing, and until you detail how it does, there’s no point bringing up these buzzwords if the developers already know this.

          1. Go cry yourself over your shitty processor that can’t even beat a Xenon from nearly 7 years ago. It’s a joke and everyone who isn’t a Nintendrone knows that.

            The Wii U’s CPU is the most common developer complaint, because all Nintendo wants is Wii BC and low power efficiency. This is no way is going to benefit future games, or help future multiplat games when it’s inevitability annihilated by the next consoles.

            1. The GPGPU is going to help…a lot, especially since the GPU can handle tasks better and more efficiently than a CPU, meaning that Nintendo doesn’t need a powerful CPU that overheats or is clocked very high, all they need is a beastly GPU.

          1. There’s no truth in that article, it’s a load of hyperbolic nonsense and even the writer notes that he put his own spin on the title since no such thing was said.

            Keep trying though, you pathetic insect.

            1. Why are you still on this site? I mean seriously, you whine, bitch, moan and groan about Nintendo fanboys and their opinions on this site even though it’s pretty damn obvious they will always be here … please answer it this time instead of avoiding it like you normally do.

            2. Its funny that. There is no truth to this either.
              “This is no way is going to benefit future games, or help future multiplat games when it’s inevitability annihilated by the next consoles.”
              Try harder pathetic little child.

                  1. PC Master Race which is getting no notable games because developers focus more on the…

                    CONSOLES.

                    So much for that master race, shouldn’t be pretending that it is one.

                    1. Can you answer my question you seem to avoid? Why are you still on this site?

                      Also, yeah. Unfortunately PC seems to get crappy ports from these consoles. Borderlands 2 and Crysis series though in regards to PC are far superior to the console versions :3 Plus we get access to Steam and to a lesser extent Origin.

            3. Aeolus likes to suck off monkey dicks, and the monkey is Icy Dead People, and they also seem to be a idiots

              Is that so because someone in the comments of that article just beat you to death in an argument?

              1. They did not “beat me to death” in any argument on that article, several posters brought up completely irrelevant replies and the writer himself came up with a strawman retort that in no shape or form invalidated what I said. He even admitted that he put his own spin on that article

                You can stroke their cocks all you want, though.

                1. HAH! You dare to bring up Strawman arguments after taking the words “slightly less” and blowing them up to “Console will fail” proportions to support a point you never had against anyone in the first place?
                  When the system isn’t even out yet and devs are still learning how to optimize their games on it?
                  Fuck off, hypocrite. Go stroke off to your Vitanic and the shiny particle effects that you’re so easily amused by. You’ve got no say worth listening to here.

          2. Hm. That’s pretty cool. And aeolus ik who you are now. Lmao you’re just a hired troll, here to bring strife and flame wars to ninten based forum pages for munny (spelled this way by influence of KH).

  7. Once developers grasp programming for CPU’s with multiple cores the games will get better. As of now hardly any games currently on PC or consoles are programmed to take advantage of multiple cores and/or threads. They are working on it, but it does take time for them to learn how to utilize new CPU architectures.

  8. “For the PS3 it has multiple CPUs and an SPU, so you can calculate the various motions of the characters on the CPU so overall it runs smoothly. The Xbox 360 CPUs are formulated so they can spread out the processing power so things run efficiently. With the Wii U being new hardware, we’re still getting used to developing for it, so there are still a lot of things we don’t know yet to bring out the most of the processing power. There’s a lot that still needs to be explored in that area.” Suzuki’s direct quote. You gotta give them some time to fully utilize the Wii U

  9. You know, I just don’t get Nintendo one bit. They know Wii had a terrible time on the market because it didn’t have the power of 360 and PS3 (which is the main reason it didn’t get 3rd party support) and then they go and make Wii U which is only slightly less or slightly more (each developer will have his own opinion ) than current Gen? That’s awesome for the time being, because we’re gonna get ME3, AC3, CODBO2, and all these awesome 3rd party titles finally for Nintendo. However, it has been stated numerous times that next Gen Xbox and Playstation are around 6 times more powerful than this Gen, and Square as well as Epic have already revealed their next Gen engines to run on them. Unreal Engine 4 has already been confirmed not to work with Wii U. So here’s the thing; like Wii before it, Wii U will always feel like a Gen behind, and while we are getting good 3rd party titles now, don’t expect ME4, AC4, the first next Gen COD to come to Wii U if they are running on an engine designed for 720 and PS4. Wii U will face the same problem Wii did, and it will sell well at first, but then bog down. Nintendo just best hope Playstation and Xbox hold off a little while longer (at least 2 years) to reveal their next Gen system.

    1. You don’t really know that. Nobody really knows what’s going to happen. Some say that may be the case, others say that PS4 and 720 won’t be that much more powerful than WiiU. Does that mean WiiU will turn out just like its predecessor? No. All of this is just speculation. Until we get actual info about 720 and PS4, this debate is kinda moot as far as I’m concerned.

    2. Umm…the Wii-U can run Unreal Engine 4, Epic has confirmed that. Besides, Nintendo isn’t putting in a strong CPU because of their GPGPU. The CPU is only current-gen or below, the GPU is obviously not. Seriously, use your head for a second.

  10. the problem with the developer is that they use the same fuckin code over and over … they are having difficulties because they are trying to adapt the code instead of writing all from scratch
