Sony managing director of PlayStation UK, Fergal Gara thinks that the company is in the perfect position to nab those consumers who won’t buy Wii U on launch day. Gara admits that the original Wii was a huge breakthrough moment for Nintendo, but he feels that the new slim PlayStation 3 combined with Wonderbook will be the killer combination this Christmas.
“If you look at the upcoming Christmas market, the Wii will be selling in very low volumes – it’s on its way out – and the Wii U will arrive, but it will bring in a relatively small number of early adopter consumers.”
“We see ourselves well positioned for the casual market who won’t buy Wii U on day one. We’ve got a wow moment, we feel. I remember when people picked up the Wii controller for the first time, that was a big moment, it was a casual market breakthrough, but we thing we’ve got a casual market breakthrough as well with Wonderbook and the lowest priced PS3 yet.”

In Australia the Ps3 12 GB will cost $298 and it comes with a game. The Wii U basic bundle costs $348. Only a $50 difference.

Yes, but as there are already many good/established games in PS3 as well as great upcoming games like The Last of Us, I’m thinking of buying a PS3 for now. I’ll leave Wii U for next year, for more stable system and more great games.

That’s what I did now. I bought a PS3 a month ago, even though I was planning to buy a Wii U at launch. But I thought that I would get more for my money if I buy PS3 as well as a bunch of great games. I’ve built up my collection to 20+ games for PS3 in one month and I still need to get my hands on games like Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance, God of War III, the upcoming Playstation All-Stars as well as bunch of others. If I bought a Wii U, I’d probably get one game with it, which wouldn’t be worth it. I am planning on committing to the PS3 for a long time (hence all the games as well as my purchase of a larger harddrive).

The only ones that looked vastly superior to the PS2 versions were the ones made by the A teams while the PS2/GC/Xbox versions were made by less experienced and talented teams. Keep in mind how much development time, budgets, teams, etc. increased during the transition from last-gen to current-gen.

This is true. I was a Wii-only gamer since 2006 and just picked up a PS3 a few months ago and I absolutely enjoy it. There still is a marketplace for a slimmer and cheaper PS3 and I’m sure it will sell well during the holiday season. But with the Wii U coming out this holiday season and with it already selling out everywhere, it will be interesting to see how everything will work out for the Big 3.

Err, if you couldn’t pick up the casuals with ps move i doubt that a book along with the move will help. Not to mention you need the console, book + game(?), ps move and eye toy. Not to mention, a few heavy hitting nintendo titles will be releasing over the holidays that have a far more appeal then this.

That demo was 720p, no Anti-aliasing, and ran at 30 frames per second. I guess it would make a good Infinity Blade 3 on iOS/iPhone 5, because that’s pretty much what the game looked like motion.

They are out of their league. I would’ve agreed that they would have a lot of the Wii U sells IF the Slim versions were 199 and 249. With that, they could have at least said, “we have a large archieve of video games and the price is at least 100 dollars LESS than the Wii U.” It doesn’t take a game wiz for even a mother to go into a store and wonder what system to give their child. They see the PS3 Slim and the Wii U, if they get it or ask someone about it, they’re going to tell them it’s a new system so of course they will know it got a good 5 years going for the system. The PS3 is an older system and SONY will mosyt likely make another one. Common sense is to get the Wii U. I think Nintendo might have won this.

It is inevitable. Sony has already outright stated they’re not releasing a console that can’t show a significant leap. Sony would never do that to begin with. Besides, Sony has ALWAYS released a new media format with every new home console, what makes you so sure they won’t do so again?
MS lost $126 on every 360 sold when it launched in 2005. Every year probably lowered those costs even further. Which even then, was nowhere close to the HUNDREDS Sony lost on the PS3 mainly due to…a CPU and Blu-ray of all things.

Sony said they are supporting the PS3 til 2015 and probaly after that. Plenty of great stuff for xbox and ps right now exsisting so I dont see why people wouldent want to buy one now if they dont have one.
By support, they more than likely mean that the product and it’s games will be available at retail for a prolonged period of time. They’re not going to wait until 2015 to release their console, unless they want to give Nintendo and Microsoft a HUGE head-start. Besides while, yes, the PS3/360 are getting many great games this year and the next, they’ll get quickly replaced by the PS4/720.
It just seens unlikely after all this time someone wouldnt have bought a ps3 or a 360. Plus, most of these people that Sony talks about not buying the WiiU are going to be the fanboys and the people genuinely not interested, that already own a ps3 or 360.

But yeh some games if you are using an SD TV with a 360 or ps3 and you set it accordingly , some of the effects dont even show up , its like there is numerous builds of the game in one from shitty to awesome.

Right now im waiting til December to get a HDTV when sales for them are plentyful and amazing. Ill be getting either a Sony or Samsung, nothing else.

I don’t know about people jumping ship to go with Sony, let alone Microsoft. If we are talking about the “casual” market who bought a Wii, then they’ll probably not even bother with a new console at all. They’re not as stupid as others claim them to be, but neither Sony nor Microsoft have a “simple” design to their controllers and “friendly” games to play. The Move has pretty much died off and Microsoft is barely pushing the Kinect anymore so those that haven’t already picked them up are in a weird sort of gaming limbo. They don’t know what to do, what to buy, so they’ll just wait and play on their smart phones.

Well, I don’t see how a new gimmick is going to overcome the Wii U. What happens here is that they are pretty sure people will buy any kind of gimmick, no matter what it is. And they think that their gimmicks are somewhat more special than unique natural features of other consoles.
About the Slim version, well, they’ve done it with PSX and PS2, so it was only a matter of time. But I don’t understand how it’s attractive to anyone to choose between a PS3 Slim and another console when the normal PS3 has been on the market for such a long time. I mean, most gamers who wanted a PS3 already have. It’s not an attractive feature to most people, except for the price, and it’s only going to affect those who have yet to buy a gaming console.
If Sony is saying that they’re going to guarantee they get the leftovers of Nintendo, then I agree. I’m sure there’ll be yet lots of people who won’t be able to get their hands on Wii U, so they might consider buying a PS3, specially for being most known than Wii U so far. I won’t buy a WiiU on Day 1 release just like I don’t buy any other system on the it comes out. But keep in mind, I won’t be buying a PS3 since there are not many games on there that interest me. Before you label me as a ‘nintendo fanboy’, I would consider owning a PS Triple, but I don’t think I will be shabby with the Wonderbook, let along the much slimmer model.
