A recent job listing issued by Rockstar North suggests that the acclaimed developer is looking to create what it describes as a cutting-edge engine for current and next-gen platforms. The studio is looking to hire a Core Engine Programmer and a Physics Programmer to make this all possible. It’s likely that the engine will be used for the next Red Dead and GTA games.

I think developers should focus more on story and gameplay not what looks best.

      1. I think you missed my key word being next gen platforms. I completely agree that new engines are always needed. But new engines for specifically next gen I feel will be worthless. Focus on the current is all I was asking for! (:

        1. The industry needs next gen. It’s not just a part of the entertainment industry but also a part of the technology world which needs progress to be relevant and profitable.

Just like new computers, operating systems, cameras, TVs, etc. are being developed all the time, so too the gaming industry needs to make a few strides here and there.

Rockstar would just be the latest in a long line of companies making new engines for next gen games (Quantic, Kojima, Epic, Square-Enix, etc.)

    1. Agree with Simply G…. “next gen” (whatever) is NOT ONLY GRAPHICS, its new things/unique things to do, more polygons, better physics, better AI etc or in other worlds new gameplay, better atmosphere etc.

      Next gen is just “time”

    2. I agree the whole “engine=graphics” thing annoys me. Specifically among Nintendo fans simply because they don’t understand.

Newest example I can give: assassins creed 3 has a new engine. What is it noted for? Graphics, and with the new engine they can raise the amount of unique NPCs in view. From 100 in revelations, to 1000+ which is why they were able to recreate some battles during the revolution.

  3. I think epic made a engine no console next gen will be able to use and companies are making there own to show the visual power of the console but whit the tech avalible.

  5. That probably costs twice as much as the current one, they forgot to mention that.
“What is sustainable business?” said Rockstar, and Unreal.
