According to Nikkei.com, in an effort to see more interaction and cooperation between the two, Nintendo is planning to unify its handheld and home console divisions. The move, if proven to be true, will see employees from both hardware-making divisions merging and moving into a new development building, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year and is near Nintendo’s headquarters in Kyoto. Nintendo allegedly hopes the move will encourage more connectivity between its handheld and home console platforms.
Thanks to IGN, here is a translation of Nikkei.com‘s report:
“Game system development projects are becoming larger and taking longer to complete as the machines become more advanced. Nintendo apparently has its sights set on speeding up these projects by sharing development processes for consoles and handheld devices where possible and by reassigning personnel depending on the situation. It sees interactions between engineers as a potential hotbed of new ideas.”
“In an effort to create more innovative and attractive products, Nintendo Co. will combine the development segments for its home video game consoles and handheld game devices,”
“The decision comes on the heels of recent releases of the Nintendo 3DS portable system in February 2011 and the Wii U home console last month. With more people using their smartphones and tablets for entertainment via the Internet, including games and videos, Nintendo aims to come up with next-generation game systems that will turn heads.”
“The two teams will eventually be integrated and the segment will be organized by function, such as circuits, mechanisms and design,” quotes the report.

“Such functions are already available with the Wii U, but Nintendo likely hopes to better streamline its products by tapping into such online services as Twitter and video sites.”
Looking forward to seeing the connectivity.
I would like to see a “Game Boy Player” like accessory or feature for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. I would love to play my 3DS games on my TV.
So do i! I miss the good ol’ days of the Gamecube.
BEN!!! Why must you do this to me I’m sure you are a nice person behind the screen but fuck you scared me!
You are not Jadusable, so you are ok.
Ben, ben benito musolini
they better do that its badass if they do.
Best way to make the next systems they make work perfectly together.
Great move.
together wiiu
I hope they doesn’t fall in the Vita problem, making just ports for the Handheld.
You’re pretty stupid, aren’t you?
agreed, sony drones will never say its not bad never will, even if vitanic is dead they still will not say it.
What if new Wii U games will support the 3DS as a controller? That would be awesome.
Why? What would be the point unless it was for a game like Zelda: Four Swords, or for a Pokemon game?
Nobody sane would rightly use a 3DS instead of a Gamepad, that’s why the gamepad exists
That would be awesome for a Wii U Pokemon game.
It would be nice if it functioned as another controller with a view screen without having to purchase more assuming you already have a 3ds, as many millions already do
But the 3DS doesnt have 2 analogs, 2 triggers, or the same sensors, not to mention the screen size might make games difficult if they use more precise touch screen controls.
Having a game using the 3DS as a control would limit the possibilities.
I totally agree it would be limited, but we all have a 3ds, it could be impimented for certain games. Much better than the lame interaction between game boy advance and GameCube
Well yeah, but the game would have to be made specifically in mind to use it, it couldn’t be used as an optional controller or anything
Re-release of Four Swords Adventure? :3
Gooood
They can combine them together but they will still have shit! Hahahahahaha! BURN NINTENDO BURN!
You never give up, do ya?
I saw all the compliments you gave me on the last article! THANKS SO MUCH MAN!
Hmm….interesting move. I’m wondering if this means that Nintendo is serious about establishing cloud based consoles for it’s next systems. Hmm…….
Nintendo need to get their head out of the clouds! WAKE UP! WAKE UP! NINTENDO U SUCK BALLS!
Shut up I’m trying to sleep
Commenting on this site isn’t helping you sleep, now is it?

Now HERE’S some Nintendo news!
Did anyone notice that American is gone for good?
Do you have an idea where he went?
He probably died from all that spamming i did to him.
Do you remember scroll troll? Easily the most annoying thing that has ever happened to this site. Especially when that dull Ronald regan speech was posted!
Never heard of him. When did he start posting?
A good 8-10 months ago. Perhaps sikr found a way to block that, with an iPhone it left reading post nearly impossible due to the huge amount of scrolling down
Also Ness is gone as well.
Ness should have been aborted
just like the jersey shore
If you don’t mind me asking, what did you spam American to make him go away?
I kept replying to him by posting ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) in the comments.
one of the dumbest upgrades Nintendo made was making the 3ds xl come with just a larger screen and no 2nd analog stick
if I were Nintendo,I was going create the 3ds xl around the innovation of Wii u,I was going to make sure it had a sync button for instant communication with the Wii U and a 2nd analog stick,be able to stream content from the Wii u,and have a resolution like the Gamepad, and a far longer lasting battery life,3DS xl has sold millions, people who own one wouldn’t have to worry about buying a 2nd Gamepad or an accessory to use the 3ds xl as a Gamepad.
Nintendo done screwed up,I don’t know how they think sometimes.
You’re really an idiot you know that? Shit doesnt have space for dual analogs. Do you even dissect the things you buy? For shame.
Maybe thats because IT WASNT A FUCKING REMODEL!
Just imagine this a second, ok?
You buy a 3DS, then ONE YEAR LATER, they say, “oh hey, here’s a new 3DS, thats vastly superior to the other one, including a second analog stick, that developers will use for games from now on, and you cant play them, unless you buy the add on, and have it attatched forever.
So you wasted however much you paid, and have to pay more for the add on, and you still have one that inferior to the new one.
How would you feel?
The XL is only a different choice, for people who maybe dont mind forking out a bit extra for a bigger screen, who dont neccessarily take it outside, and dont need it to be as compact.
ITS JUST AN OPTION, GET OVER IT.
No fucking game uses it anyway, and FPS’s are fucking shit, so who cares?
+1
Haven’t you heard ? there’s a wiiu coming out next year with analog triggers and better graphics. It’s called the Wiiu XL. It’s designed to completely screw over existing wiiu owners and contradict Nintendo’s original design.
(love my XL..)
I got scared when I read this headline. I thought Nintendo was just making one Handheld/console hybrid in the future lol..
My first thoughts were budget cuts, I was like lolwut?
IKR ? We all know that’s not the case though , Nintendo’s game development will have probably doubled since DS.Wii cus now they have more polygons to render with 3D and HD respectively. The next Zelda game is rumoured to have a super triple A budget…
No. Nintendo makes their home consoles smaller and makes their portables bigger.
It’s…Nintendo logic
This^
That’s exactly what happened to me (but with my wii). I got it around late 2010, and when I went to Nintendo channel; what do you know, there’s a brand new 3ds. Then a few months later, the Wii U was announced. It pissed me off. That’s the general jist why I regret getting a wii. (This was before I new about E3 and all of that stuff)
Thats not really Nintendo being a dick though, you were just late to the party :p
This would be an interesting merge…
Pokemon Colosseum for the wii u with connectivity wit Pokemon x and y
+1
Sounds like a good idea.
Maybe it’s good, maybe it’s not. But I personally am not a fan of gimmicky ways of playing a game. Nintendo keeps doing these gimmicky things so much that sometimes the games loses the fun aspect. I consider the Wii remote a gimmick. And I never liked it. I never had a Game Boy Advance in the past to test out what it was like to play games Like Zelda Four Swords etc. on the Gamecube (or using the Tingle Tuner in Wind Waker). But I never had any interest in THAT either. And I feel the same about Wii U and 3DS connectivity. I honestly don’t care about it, as long as they don’t screw up the game and force you to play it that way. Every game should have different control schemes to choose from.
As long as they don’t make console-powered handhelds.
Sounds great! I’m just wondering why they didn’t do this years ago. The possibilities for this current generation are obviously limited, but I’ll bet the next generation of console and handheld will be killer
