Wii U Sold Only 38,000 Units In April?

wii_u_console_and_controllerUnfortunately, this rumour may not be what you want to hear. Speculation concerning the numbers of Wii U units sold during April has arisen from the depths of the internet, leaving many in a real state of bother. Allegedly, the Wii U sold 38,000 units during the month of April according to a leak from the latest NPD figures – of course, this is just speculation, so as we always say, take it with a grain of salt.

    1. Lmao one of my favourite movies.Yer would be worried still doing them sales in oct, however I definitely see change around. With nintendo stepping up on advertisements and e3 just round corner things will change for sure.

  1. Not good Nintendo. The Wii U needs games ASAP and no not late multi platform ports, I mean games built from the ground up exclusive for the Wii U. An exclusive resident evil would help a lot, like in one of the rumours I read about but things need to change drastically from now to E3.

      1. You should educate yourself. Nintendo has money to burn, unlike sony who should really tread carefully… Their tv line is the ONLY saving grace they have. They better hope their ps4 sells like a dream.

    1. *Ahem* I’m gonna pull a “Sony Fanboy.” It has potential. Plus, its normal for a Nintendo system to have a slow start. Look at the 3DS. Thats doing just fine, it was struggling when it first came out. Plus, Nintendo is the oldest video gaming company to date. (It started in the late 1800s, making playing cards!) If it were to die, that’d be a huge loss to gamers everywhere.

  2. I’m going to get a Wii U so I can play Nintendo games, that’s for sure. But this is terrible. It amazes me how well the 3DS sells compared the Wii U console. It’s like night and day.

But one thing is for sure, what I’ve realized is.”to never judge a system by its first year.”

      1. Not true in the slightest. The 3DS at its worst sold way more than the Wii U is selling at the moment.

        1. the 3DS sold 4.5 million units in its first year.. and that’s including the increase in sales following the price cut

the wii U was at what.. 3.5? in march.. 5 months after its release

          1. Hell, thats almost more than the 3DS. In less than half of the time. The Wii U’ll be just fine.

  3. Well, its not too unlikely. A lot of people are struggling, its hard to go out and buy a brand new system whenever you want. Then you have to take into account all the negative feedback its received. Many have said it was rushed, a lot took shots at how you got to have an uninterrupted internet connection and like 3 hours to update its frameware and if anything happens it bricks.

If this is true, than Nintendo needs to step up and do something to make the transition less painful. For one, they need to make it where you can be given a disk by the store to upgrade the unit’s frameware without a connection. then make it where it slowly updates the frameware over time without impeding getting things up and started. Also they need to be careful about how they release the latest models so people don’t feel screwed over. Lastely they need to make it where the old Will can still be used up until the last second. PS2 only recently stopped having games and units made, If nintendo had half of Sony’s commitment to their systems, there would be no problem.

    1. Only thing is that sony only comit to consoles that sells. Now they are trying to sell the vita has a ps4 peripheral.

    2. Nintendo has already with all newer wii u units shipped come with the day one update pre installed.

    3. Sending retailers a firmware upgrade disk is a genius Idea.
I don’t have much data each month, so the first WiiU update, and the games, was devistating.

      Seriously, Nintendo should do this.

      Good call!!

  4. Nothing surprising here, consoles with no games usually don’t sell that well. Let’s talk about sales number when people actually have a reason to buy the system, which I hope will happen after E3.

  5. Dunno why people take this as a shock, there wasas no gameame this April oh wait there were none, woust time too as it was Easter, Nintendo get it together people don’t buy consoled to look at there glossyness

  6. Thats a little concerning, but it isnt surprising at all….Beside Injustice was there even a game release worth mentioning? This month is going to be horrible as well, though I suspect not that bad due to Nintendo Directs announcing new stuff. In june things will most likely change, but I dont expect it to skyrocket. I predict 8-10 million units sold in total for the end of the year without advertisement. With well done advertisement on the other hand…..

    1. “Beside Injustice was there even a game release worth mentioning?”

      no actually

however sales caused by lego city undercover and monster hunter should have seeped into april

  7. Nintendo should stop making consoles and just make games for ps4 and 720. They seriously can’t handle the pressure of today’s market.

    1. Nintendo will never put their Games on Microsoft or Sony systems. They have their handheld too if you forgot. As long as they have their handheld market, they’ll be okay.

    2. And you should stop putting shit here, now you are acting like that imbecile pachter? Silly kid, go to your Xbox page, we don’t need your attitude here.

    3. LMAO^^^^THIS FOOL.
you do realize that Nintendo has not even put there own games out yet so why jump into conclusion? also they did say that if they were to go out of business or become 3rd parties they rather died the Japanese way.

      1. That’s the point, Nintendo SHOULD have had their games at LAUNCH or in the launch window, stop damage controlling and face it. Nintendo fucked up big time.

          1. Lol yes they have. I don’t even have to tell you. Look at what 3rd parties are saying about the Wii U.

        1. you know Nintendo will NOT release crap at launch if its not finish and you should know that.

            1. i have to agree here

they should have delayed the launch

they wouldn’t have gotten the holiday sales.. but so what

        2. Name a single console that’s done that.
          Just one.
          You CAN’T.
          Because IT DOESN’T EXIST.
Not a single console in history has had all of its best titles during its launch. Not the PS3/2/1, not the Wii/GC/N64/SNES/NES, not the 360/X-Box.
Expecting the Wii U to break this industry-wide trend in order to be called successful is the HEIGHT of stupidity.

          1. well they usually had at least some

nintendo really didn’t have much to offer at launch

aside from zombi u and nsmbu there wasn’t much to write home about

    4. hahahahahaha the 3DS is the fastest selling real video game console in history. Nintendo are weathering the storm on that alone. Stop being racist. That’s the problem with offeprings of Atari consoles get over it. Stupid xbox is garbage. Like pop music the 720 will be heavily funded with talentless IPs. Ala FPS xbox360.

    5. Nintendo would refuse to make games by their Nemeses. Besides, considering how much fanboys refuse to like anything Nintendo, they’d be forced to make more systems to support their hardware. Nintendo is still coming out the ass with money though, so they should be fine. For now.

  8. Nintendo usually make the mistake of flooding the system with first party games, resulting in nobody buying 3rd party games.
This time around they left it open for 3rd party developers and they didnt bother making anything, now those devs are begging for 1st party games so that the system will sell more units.

Its always a lose/lose situation with Nintendo.
People will always hate on them no matter what.

    1. Ubisoft is pretty much the most supportive developer Nintendo has. EA isn’t doing a shit!! They give the Wii U gimped ports and barely any support and they wonder ” oh why aren’t our games selling?”. 3rd parties need to support Wii U to get sales.

    2. ^THIS IT goes to show 3rd party does not care, always find the stupidity excuse not to make money.

    3. Nintendo has the habit of trying to put too many cutesy games out. I understand they want to be family friendly, but families are made of big and little kids and that includes the parents. Dads want to see their kids play some kid games, but that same dad also wants a turn and he wants to play something that doesn’t look so sweet it gives you the Wilfred Brimley Diabeetus.

The NES and SNES had tons of titles, some great and very vulgar “i can’t believe that exists” titles. N64 even had some good ones, and all of them had good (for those days) sports games. Some of the best N64 games were the southpark ones. Ever since the GC came out however; it seems everything with Nintendo is Mario, Sonic, Pokemon, LOZ or Smash Bros.

Nintendo needs some bloody, keep you up at night games like Resident Evil, but not just stop there. They need to make their own games that psychologically scars the player into sleeping with the lights on. I’m talking gun blazing, eye gauging, penis severing games violent games. I know once upon a time Mortal Kombat got in some hot water over its violence, but that was decades ago, what is Nintendo afraid of!? Mortal Kombat has gotten 100 times more bloody and violent, for god sake they had Freddy Kruger and Kratos get in on the action.

Nintendo also needs some sports games. I’m talking football games, baseball games, basketball games; hell even Hookey games to fill the roster.I Don’t even like sports, let alone sports games, but I can tell you they are lacking in games in the department. I go to Walmart (any Walmart), the game section is split into 5 parts. Nintendo handheld systems, games and Accessories, Nintendo console systems, games and Accessories, PlayStation handheld systems, games and Accessories, than Xbox systems, games and Accessories. Xbox always has the most real estate in the Display cases, and most of it is Sports based games. I see two whole displays of sports games just for Xbox, half a display case or more for PlayStation, and maybe like 4 sports games in the Nintendo section.

Nintendo is banking too much on adorable, riding Mario and Pikachu harder than a hairless Thai boy in a bar and trying to keep tap everything they can out of old franchises without really, really trying to improve them or make new ones.

when was the last time a great character and game series emerged from Nintendo, one that redefined the business? It seems like its been decades since the last Pak-man, Donkey Kong, Mario, Solid Snake, Link, ect came out for them. In fact, I think the last great game character to surface from Nintendo was the dog from Animal Crossing. I honestly cannot think of any characters Nintendo has coined that don’t mock the Italians, show a guy trying to save a tease of a princess or is such a narcissistic that all it can say is its own name as it zaps you.

Nintendo’s big problem is they’ve got no balls, and try to play it too safe. They need to take more risks, develop new franchises and try to ween off the other, more heavily abused and tapped franchises.

      1. I guess you havent looked at Nintendo’s library close enough. If you want your brains blown out by more than a handful of games, youre not very demanding as a gamer.

      2. You do realise that Nintendo helped develop the original Eternal Darkness, which is probably one of the best horror games every created 9and they patented the sanity system), that a lot of Kirby (you know, the pink puffball?) final bosses tend to be Eldritch Abomination’s, and they created Majora’s Mask which has more emotional maturity than most modern gamers could handle? Just because Nintendo doesn’t always do the obvious, doesn’t mean that everything they do is “kiddy crap”. Sure they have a strong family friendly image, but they are cleverly subtle in their handling of more mature issues.

Unless you want to argue that CoD’s dehumanising portrayal of war counts as “mature”?

    4. Still, Nintendo and te investors are not happy.
Nor were that happy with the 3DS strategy when they did this. They told us they wouldn’t do it again, and they did.

I could cost the President his Job. I don’t think that speaks well of the WiiU launch. If there isn’t a shift, soon, we’re going to have a new Nintendo president, which sucks, I really Like Iwata.

    5. Well said. Third parties now should realize that they are the useless. Idiots. Nintendo gave them canvas and the could only paint kindergarten pieces. In fact kindergarten is better than the reptide, Crysis 3, dead space 3 nonsense. Nintendo unleash your games. Fools at EA are no match for nintendo’s EAD. If you Sony and Microsoft morons even argue this fact you need to be placed in Vita Ville.

  9. Well. Maybe for one region. But there are not many worthy game yet. Sales should pick up when more games are released, but the question is by how much? Let’s hope that Smash Bros., Zelda, and Mario are enough to save this system. I know I’ll buy it by that point.

  10. That is absolutely terrible. It’s doing worst than GameCube and Vita…. If the rumor is true. Wii U needs Nintendo’s help in order to survive it’s Rivals

      1. unsatisfied wiiU buyer

lmfao…thats all you could come up with..?? none is talking about vita we’re talking about the undeniably bad nintendo wiiU launch…caused by Nintendo themselves…

and all you can say is “but its outselling vita” .. so its fine or something?
Why would anyone here gaf about vita or how its selling? this is just demonstrating how utterly retarded and dumb your response to this whole ordeal was.

        …logic..notevenonce

        1. A Wild Troll Appears!
Troll used Bullshit name! (Most Likely hasn’t even bought Wii U)

What do you want to use?

Explain the already expansive third-party games available 3/3

          Ignore 30/30

          Feed the troll ∞/∞

Take the time to come up with a logical statement that contradicts the Troll 20/20

          Bag:

Nintendo’s Ducktale sized money pile: x10

          NobodyCaresBall: x15

          Sarcasm Flute: x1

          [Flee]

I figured I could make a game out of this.

                1. Did you hit “Notify me of follow-up comments via email?” It gives you an Email every time someone comments.

        2. Clear-minded Wii U Buyer

          “Caused by Nintendo themselves”?
So you’re denying that third parties like EA didn’t do what they should have done to make their games sell on the system while Nintendo left them an opening?
No, if that’s your stance, then fuck off. They took a lazy approach to the Wii U out of fear, and now that they’re failing to make money off the console all they’re doing is bitching and whining.
Also, like someone else said, there has not been a single console in history that has had a super-successful launch line-up.
Wii U isn’t a failure just because it didn’t become an exception.

      1. I see another nintendrone. And no I am not on the wrong site. I am also a Nintendo fan well at least a fan of Nintendo in THE OLD DAYS. Old school nintendo > Modern Nintendo.

          1. unsatisfied wiiU buyer

appareantly realistic nintendo fans, or fans who are criticizing, unsatisfied and have different views are not allowed here..weird

            1. Calling a system failed after 6 months, when it hasn’t had any of Nintendo’s main franchises released for it, isn’t being realistic. It’s being a twat.

Everybody knows realistically it’s not going to sell like the Wii. I don’t think anything will, ever again. Everybody knows the past 6 months have been pretty bad. Everybody knows Nintendo fucked up the launch a bit. Everybody knows it needs games.

It’ll get the games. And the games will get the sales.

Comparing it to the Saturn isn’t really all that valid a comparison. Sega had 3 failed pieces of hardware before the Saturn. The Saturn had no main Sonic game – pretty much Sega’s only pulling power at the time. The Wii U isn’t coming off the back of 3 failed pieces of hardware. It’s coming off the second most popular console ever. And it isn’t going to be without a main Mario title for much longer. Plus Nintendo have other system sellers.

If you’re looking for a good example of how Nintendo can turn a struggling system into a success. Look at the 3DS.

If you’re looking for a good example of how Nintendo can survive even the most catastrophic disaster in gaming history. Look at the Virtual Boy.

Wii U is struggling and Nintendo made some piss poor decisions. But their track record shows they can turn it around. So lets see what they do.

              1. Holy God! Epic Epic ownage! Friggin greatest response ever! Ya took the words right out my mouth…or errr, fingers lol! Nintendo #1

            2. No, just people who are dedicated just for trolling or acting like douchebags in this website are not welcome here, If you have a different opinion about what’s going on, is good to me, I will not argue about that (because is your opinion). And please, don’t defent Ness is not your business ;)

              1. are you talking about the great PIOUS because if you are your not welcome in this world and NEED to embrace the darkness!!!!!………… ‘whispers’ angelixshadow………. pie….. pious hmmmm, also when i destroy you can you at least bring me some pieous, hahahahahahaha did you see what i did. is the great PIEOUS {laughs} driving you insane!!!!!!

                1. No, I really don’t get it, that was some kind of joke? or sarcasm? tell me… Keep in mind that I still I’m practicing my English, so, If this was a joke or similar, sorry about that…

                  1. im making fun of pious the main villain from eternal darkness, ,it wont make any sense if you havnt played the game. its supposed to be the guy in my picture. im going to change it because i thought it was cool but now i cant stop making fun of him.

  11. lol two systems I play the most, Vita and Wii U. could care less how they sell, there’s plenty of entertainment on both right now.

  12. I am not worried. Systems can have slow starts when launched. The Wii U is unfortunately one of them. But after this year, I believe sales will pick up. Just like the Nintendo 3DS, I will give the Wiii U some time, before making assumptions about the console. All this wait can be a good thing later on. We will all have to see.

  13. Just read this tiny little article from April 2011.
    http://vgn365.com/2011/04/25/nintendo-3ds-sales-figures-released/

The Wii U has sold about the same number of systems that the 3ds did in its first months and then sales went in the toilet, for both. The difference is that Nintendo was faster at bringing 1st party titles to the floundering 3ds than they have been with the Wii U. Once the Wii U begins to get the titles it needs later this summer, then we will see the sales numbers pickup. Just as we did with the 3ds. It sucks to see these numbers right now but these figures will not deter Nintendo from continuing to bring us great games in the future.

  14. Nintendo Commander

From now on, anyone who says that the Wii U needs more games will be sent for Decimation!

We already have lots of games coming soon, there is no need to say this every damn time!

  15. Did Nintendo honestly believe they would sell a lot of wii u they’re are barely any ads for it. Not many people even know about the system.

    1. and I quote… Me: Sorry, I’m messaging you from my WiiU so it’s not the same as a comp. Her: FroM Your What?
Me: Lol please don’t do this.. :)
      Her: Dont Do What?
Me: It’s basically a Wii 2 *posts screenshot*
Her: Oh wow, when did this come out…?! Looks cool.

  16. 38000 * $349.99 (Black WiiU Deluxe MSRP) = $13,299,620 For the one month of April?

I’d say that is not bad at all.

Now how many of those 38,000 units were sold for minors under the age of 10? Roughly 60 ~ 70%?? If so then I am very impressed with Nintendo’s marketing tactics to persuade parents to such a degree.

  17. Hmm there is definitely somewhat of a drought of 1st party titles right now, which WILL be fixed for most with Pikmin. I couldn’t be more excited being a fan of the series and all. Although I understand Pikmin is considered niche and what not, I just hope it’s successful enough to warrant a fourth title. :( Perhaps one that is tailored more towards the veterans entirely since I know Pikmin 3 almost certainly will be made with casuals in mind. I can just feel it.

  18. Well, that’s to be expected for now. Why would you buy a Wii U in april of all months? It’s not like it had a lot of new games to choose from. The sales will start coming in as soon as more games come out.

  19. The Wii U actually sold 150,000 worldwide in April. You see, the United States of America is not the only country on planet Earth.

Yes……..I’m not kidding. It really is true. There are other countries and even other continents. Another strange development is that Nintendo actually sells their products in some of these places.

Okay…..I know that yo were probably floored with that revelation. Seems to preposterous to believe right? A video-game company selling their console in more than one place. What a fiasco!

You know it’s interesting to point out that the 3DS actually outsold the Wii U, Wii, PSVita, 360 and PS3 both in the US and worldwide in April. Since sales number ‘apparently’ are so important you would think that would have been a major story here. Hmm, I guess not. Since it’s positive news about Nintendo it doesn’t garner hits to a page, which means not as much money for the people that run that site.

You would also think that since the Wii U launch basically has the same problem that the 3DS launch had and you see that Nintendo was able to turn that disaster into making the 3DS the fastest-selling console of ALL-TIME with no sign of slowing down that people would cut the Wii U a break.

Once Nintendo started rolling out the games and cleaned up a few loose ends hardware-wise (lowering the price, second circle-pad, larger-screen, freeing up memory and clock-speed for developer, etc) the 3DS took off like a shot and never looked back. Even though E3 will mostly be about the Wii U, there will be some 3DS surprises too.

The point is that when Nintendo gets behind something, it becomes a monster. We’ve seen this 3 times already in the past 7 years with the DS, Wii, and 3DS.

The western-world simply is jealous of Nintendo and their successes. Full-blown haterade and all these clowns are in bed with each other to try and tear Nintendo down. The reason why the venom towards Nintendo has become so ravenous as of late is because they are literally scared to DEATH on what is about to happened.

They are SCARED that despite the Wii U not being quite as strong as the PS3 and 720 will produce games with graphics that are just as good with only infinitesimal differences to those who rub-off to textures and tessellation. And that they are doing it at a much smaller cost to them and to the consumer.

They are SCARED that once Nintendo starts marketing the Wii U the same way they did the 3DS that sales of the Wii U will take off like the 3DS did.

They are SCARED that despite numerous 3rd party studios that have back away from the Wii U, Nintendo has replaced them with smaller development studios that are hungry and have been looking or an opportunity to become the next big thing.

They are SCARED that Nintendo has the two of the top-five best-selling consoles of all-time (plus the fastest-selling console of all-time) WITHOUT strong 3rd party support and forged alliances with major 1st-party studios like Sega and the possibility that at some point Nintendo will buy Sega which would render Nintendo tax-exempt from need 3rd party support at all.

All and all, the western market is scared because Nintendo has put their lazy, perverse, immature, self-serving, uncreative, deceitful, and over all ridiculous nature on blast for the whole world to see. Much like in the ‘Wizard Of Oz’ Nintendo dared to pull back the curtain with the Wii to show that people don’t keep coming back for noise, fire, and special effects. They keep coming back for the GAMEPLAY. The 3DS isn’t destroying the Vita because of it’s graphics. The Wii didn’t destroy the 360 and PS3 with it’s graphics, and the Wii U will not destroy the PS4 and 720 with it’s graphics. So what happens with you add graphics PLUS great gameplay?

    Self-explanatory.

    *drops mic*

  20. There is only 1 reason for that, it’s because there is no game’s release right now !!! When Pikmin 3 will release, it will be really better

    1. I’m not sure if Pikmin 3 is a system seller. But there are other games this year that will be.

  21. this is unacceptable nintendo!!!!! ive been just so stressed of lately, i muttered in a non soothing voice. how art has though fell upon me, in this putrid place…. called nintendo. my fate has been cloudy to me as i was writing in my diary….ugghh journal, of how the great PIOUS has been missed. now as i turned around after the many putrid years in the never slump of nintendo without ME pious!!!!! can save them all, in eternal darkness!!!! never ending torture to my creation, the wii u!!!! causing so much pain to peoples heads and were to be blown by the perception of reality!!!!aahhhhhhhahahahahahahaah, do you feel the darkness its eternal!!!!!aahhhhahahahahahah, the wii u is dooomed without pious!!!! embrace the darkness!!!! “farts with a match behind his butt”

    1. A Wild Fanboy Appears!

Fanboy used admit they have a diary!

Entire community has gone under the [Laugh] Effect!

What do you want to use?

          1. also i own all consoles besides the shitbox, thats gone now, the wiiu is collecting dust but im looking forward to the announcements from e3 directs and further shown of the titles shown in that january direct. this what i wrote was a joke, cant you tell, havnt you played eternal darkness?

              1. resort to grammar huh, never mind. if you couldnt tell it was a joke and still mad after i explained to you what i just said… you just seem like a huge nintendo fanboy because your being butthurt bitch about a joke that i just explained to you.

                1. I’m pretty sure he isn’t a fanboy because earlier he said he likes all systems equally. Also, Shitbox? lol the system is okay it’s just that evil company who owns it is shit.

                  1. hes just getting so defensive haha i explained to him and everything. also i microsoft sucks, only thing they got is halo, also they ruined rareware and probably wont sell the ips back, the only thing i can think of that is better is the controller. dualshock sucks.

  22. This is awful but I really am not worried. I do not own a Wii-U but I do want one because come august things will start flowing for them. If they had even a $50 price drop I would buy one right now to catch up on New Super Mario Bros, Nintendo Land, Lego City, and the soon Game and Wario. But right now $350 is too steep for me.

  23. Sad if its true. =(

I really hope Nintendo has something BIG to announce at E3. More VC’s and more ios/android app support (I know some people will react but Nintendo has to do everything it can to get people to buy the console casual or hardcore). We also need innovative first party games (Nintendo, I’m begging you to step it up, please do not do a NSMBWiiU where the gamepad was not fully utilized). So far amongst 3rd party party, Ubisoft is showing unique ways on how gamers can use the gamepad that matters (Zombi U and hopefully Splinter Multiplayer with NO SPLIT SCREEN but gamepad and tv). Gampead+TV is how multiplayer should be played. If the gamepad also has an accessory made to connect to another TV then that would be more awesome. Nobody can argue that it is a superior experience.
