Despite a report claiming that GameStop is discontinuing the Wii U 8GB Basic model, Nintendo UK says that the console will still continue to go on sale in the United Kingdom. Yesterday Kotaku received information from a GameStop employee email that the leading North American video game retailer will be discontinuing the model from the 18th of June. It sounds fairly likely that this will happen worldwide, but Nintendo just isn’t ready to announce this yet. We should hear more on June 11th at 3pm BST.

Nintendo had the reveal of the PS4 and xbone to their greatest advantage. How you may ask? Well it is simple and a working of a greater power than Nintendo. Firstly the Wii U has sold well for a first releasing home console in the next generation, secondly Sony, nintendo’s main competitor on the games front was next with their medium to alright presentation. This caused a bump in Nintendo stock. Lastly was microsoft’s console reveal. Blinded by our edginess of what the xbone VCR would be we all but ignored the fact that xbox does not really have viable first nor second party offerings to jab at nintendo nor Sony. Had Sony not blundered with the PS3 in it’s early days this would have been a more interesting e3. As it stands Microsoft has the most to prove this coming week. Sony need only show the last guardian and games. Nintendo only has to demo Mario 3D and Mario Kart for the Wii U.
I don’t care what the Xbots will show and I never cared ever since their infectious first steps into our universe…
I only look forward watching them makena fool of themselves which we have seen 4 times now…

This isn’t confirmation of anything. Nintendo UK first said no comment, then that it’s currently available, as it is everywhere else. If anything, the lack of an explanation is confirmation that it IS being discontinued.

Personally, the recall on the basic model doesn’t necessarily mean the Big ‘N’s dumping the system in favor for the 32 GB system. Back when I worked at GameCrazy, Sony did something similar with the PS3 systems, recalling their basic systems, then reselling it as a packaged deal (I forget which game was packaged). In fact Nintendo did this with the Wii itself, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they did this with the Basic Wii U System.
Because right now, with a lot of games coming out, it wouldn’t surprise me if they repackaged as a Super Luigi or Pikmin Bundle as they’ve been doing with the 3DS models.
Nintendo UK would be wise to ditch it. The non-gamer aren’t coming back. It’s time to focus, 100%, on the core.
