Director of Sora Ltd Masahiro Sakurai has revealed that the new Super Smash Bros for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS will not feature cross-platform play. Sakurai says that since each version of the long-awaited game has completely different stages, cross-platform play wouldn’t work. However, each version will interact with each other as gamers will be able to take the characters that they’ve customised on 3DS and transfer them to the Wii U version. Sakurai wouldn’t elaborate on what the customisations are, but said that they won’t be costumes or other tasks that the player would find repetitive. Sakurai wouldn’t confirm if the level editor is coming back.
Thanks to everyone that sent this in.
Dang!!!!!!

Wasnt expecting it. Hope level select comes back though! fingers crossed!
Level select? I want to be able to choose levels as well
What does Cross-Platform Play mean?
It means if you are playing the Wii U version, you can’t play against people who have the 3DS version.
Oh, ok. Thanks for replying.
Actually, in the strictest sense, you can play against a different platform. They’re just saying you can’t do that very thing.
what…was the point of your comment? faggot
WAIT WAIT WAIT. So if there’s no cross-platform play, why do they want to limit the roster for the Wii-U version just because of the 3DS’ limitations!?
they never said that
They literally said that so that they wanted both games could have the same roster and that the 3DS’ limitations will make it difficult to have a lot of characters..
Sorry, terrible grammar there: Basically, they want both games to have the same characters, but the 3DS’ limitations will make it difficult to push in a lot of characters.
I think that’s so Nintendo isn’t in competition with themselves. Why would they want people to dump one of their Nintendo consoles (the 3DS) in favour of another? Kind of makes sense when looked at that way.
Why don’t they just make them two different experiences then? They don’t HAVE to play/look that similar. I wouldn’t mind downgraded graphics with a different roster on the 3DS.
But a lot of people can’t afford both consoles – remember that Nintendo are trying to promote both – and would say “I’m not getting a 3DS, I’m going to buy a Wii U instead. It has the same games but with more characters and stuff”.
I don’t personally think Nintendo have taken the right approach, but this is why I think they’ve made this decision.
Actually they never did say that they will have the same roster. In the developer direct they say the same Number. Thats why Villager and Trainer are not in any 3DS Screenshots.
But it makes no sense not to have the Villager in the 3DS version since his game JUST came out on 3DS. Maybe they are just further along on the Wii U.
I think you have misheard, they dont’t want both versions to have all similar characters, but the same number of characters. I know Sakurai can pull this one off though.
You’ve completely misread the quote. The plan is not to lower the character roster to benefit the 3DS version, the plan is to try to fit all the characters into the 3DS version though that may mean making some edits to them.
Did mario hit bowser in the balls?

They said that cross-platform play will be in the next smash in E3 2011 -__-
They did not.
They said they will be able to interact with eachother in someway, I believe something about story mode?
Hmm ok, no problem.
I don’t care a out smash bros but how many promises does Iwata break?!? I remember back in 2011 “But I think I just promised you a cross compatible dmash brothers for Wii U and 3DS.”
actually, he said, “but i think i just promised you that smash bros, will be available for both 3ds and Wii U, and will also work together in some fashion” <- that is pretty much off memory…
Meh, didnt expect it, the hardware differences between WiiU and 3DS are too big.
Doubt i’ll get the 3DS version, but it’s a good option for those who do.
The 3DS version is basically for Japan -_-
They BETTER release the Wiiu version about 3 months before the 3DS version , or at least like the Lego City games released. If the 3DS version releases first it will take a huge bite out of of the Wiiu versions sales.
To be perfectly honest , I don’t care much about the 3DS version. Smash bros is a home console game like Pokemon is a handheld game.
I think it’s a good idea, and on the go Smash games sounds awesome, but i rarely play games on the go.
I like the flexibility of a portable console. I can play where I want, even in the house. Wii u brings that too, but it doesn’t reach the lower floor of my house
Actually that’s not really true. Both versions are going to have exclusive content, so it gives Smash fans reasons to buy both versions. Also in this day and age people are very much graphics oriented, so many will most likely buy the Wii U version instead.
The customization part sounds interesting…
Maybe you can customize what moves you want to have…
I could see that, megman has a ton of moves so it would make sense if they did something like that with him atleast
dont give a damn! i’ll be buying both versions!! too much love for smashy :D
Both games have different styles, so I wasn’t expecting it to work.
If anything, I think Sakurai should be pushing to make the Wii U version BETTER than the 3DS version, mostly because of how it’ll help stimulate and increase the Wii U’s popularity and sales. Obviously if the Wii U version is far superior in terms of it having more characters, stages, and all of the above and all the good stuff, more people will flock to the Wii U. Of course, that’s not to say they should ignore the 3DS version. The 3DS version, as suggested, could allow players to transfer data from that game to the Wii U version, and, of course, it acts as Super Smash Bros. on the go for you to play when you’re not at home.
Or if you want to keep it simple, Sakurai could always just make them two completely different games, like maybe the 3DS version has a slightly different fighting system than the Wii U version and has a different story, while the Wii U version is a follow-up to said story. I don’t know, I’m just pitching in suggestions.
That’s ok. I just want the U version.
Thank god, so they don’t have to make the WiiU version worse to allow cross-play?
WHAT IS MARIO DOING TO BOWSER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what he should’ve done a long time ago, actually hurt him instead of letting him fall of a platform lol
I’m excited for both versions, smash bros on the go and smash bros in glorious HD! sakuri knows what he’s doing I trust his decision
Well this sucks!!! You better confirm a lever editor!
I don’t understand why some people is disappointed with this news, Sakurai said that the stages in the 3DS version will be based on the portable games of each series, so obviously if both versions will have different stages you won’t be able to cross play.
In order to have cross play both games have to be the same, like DOA5, UMvsC 3, etc on Sony’s platforms.
Think people, think….
I have a feeling the 3DS version of smash bros will get a 7/10 hopefully im wrong though.
Pingback: Keiji Inafune Says “I Am Ecstatic Mega Man Is In Super Smash Bros” | My Nintendo News
I think that would be really hard to do since Wii U has a much faster CPU, so it was to be expected. Still the 3DS doesn’t have to be any short of good, plus, what is the point of playing between the Wii U and the 3DS if you can simply put the four players on the home console? The 3DS game is obviously gonna have linked and online play so you can play anywhere else.
I’m okay with this. As long as both games are fun, there is a nice amount of characters and the stage builder returns.
Actually I think this is very good. Making each version unique gives people who have both systems ample reason to own both, and whatever these customizations/other small cross platform extras are reward you for playing either version, most likely. I would be very much on board with getting both versions, I play Smash so much and while I don’t play as much on the go it’d be nice to have the game were I stuck at school waiting for class, etc. I’d buy both versions before I’d get an Xbox One, at least.
Disappointing
Not a problem, I was going to get only the Wii U version anyways:D
So there’s character customization in the 3DS version?!
Well, that settles it; I’ve GOT to own both versions, no matter what!
Understandable.
I wasn’t expecting to play online on my 3DS against a Wii U player or anything like that, be way too difficult.
I am definitely ok with that, it just means that I get to nejoy to different Smash games around the same time. Seriously, that’s freaking awesome.
Finally I mobile SSB ill be first to get it
Some posts cause you to chuckle, some posts leave you feeling sad, this particular one made me think, and that is better than anything
else.
L’int principal du reportage, pour moi, est qu’il montre l’arriv d’une nouvelle styliste.
