Rumor: Switch 2 will have backwards compatibility both physically & digitally

Nintendo has confirmed that the next console will be announced this fiscal year. However, Nintendo is still being very silent on what, exactly, the new hardware will be. Until then, the rumor mill is going to continue to churn. So, it shouldn’t be surprising that there’s a new Switch 2 rumor that has surfaced earlier today.

Nintendo insider TvPH, whom you may remember as the one that initially reported the news of the new hardware being internally delayed to 2025, is now relaying info in regards to the Switch 2’s backwards compatibility with Switch games, which has been rumored to be a thing in Nintendo’s next generation console.

According to TvPH, the backwards compatibility isn’t going to be limited to just physically released games. For those that have bought games digitally, the next console will apparently have backwards compatibility with that too. If so, then Switch owners will be able to bring their entire Nintendo Switch game library over to the next console.

  1. I mean… I figured as much? Why else would Furukawa mention Nintendo Account so much? Clearly your purchases are account-based. Meaning… if your current Switch breaks and you need to replace it OR if you want your old purchases to migrate over to the new console, you can do that seamlessly.

  3. Assuming backwards compatibility is a thing, I’m sure some out there will part with their Switch units in various ways once they’ve jumped aboard the new system, but I’ll be holding on to mine, for a few reasons.

    1. And with there being so many out there, I’m expecting them to become dirt cheap, just as with the Wii. At one point they were going for $40 at GameStop 😂. Definitely picking up an OLED then, just to have one.

  4. Oddly enough, I don’t believe it; It would be a waste of their pleasure to bring out the remake of the remake of the remake… Or expand the Nintendo Switch Online offerings. Not to mention that if, as I think, metroid prime 4 is the transition game, then there would be no point in doing it on the next console

    1. That would be such a tiny little problem in comparison to the absolutely massive dealbreaker to every switch user that has an immense switch library that is only going to be available on old models, imagine how fucking useless the ps5 would be if it wasn’t backwards compatible

      1. I agree but Nintendo could have done the same with the wii/wii u for the switch but they changed the model altogether… I’m one of those people who bought a lot on the Wii Virtual Console and yet… We’ll have to see, but I’m afraid that the economy will take precedence over the desire to please

        1. Did they? I think they will stick around with nvidia chips even for the newer model, and that would be absolutely easy for them to port everything, I’m not saying you are wrong but idk I’m pretty positive about it, pretty sure they are gonna give us all our games for the next system, only time will tell at this point we are pretty close to a reveal now

  5. Nintendo should honestly take the retro handheld trend and improve their services on retro games, as an emulator nerd i honestly think that the classic online apps are reaaaaaaally good, the only thing they need to do is adding more games frequently, imagine how good online would be if you get a huge library of classics, and also add more personalization for the controls, I’m rooting a lot for Nintendo to make the next console amazing!

    1. Not only that but imagine if they also add the same games to their app on iOS and android and allow for your saves to transfer and backup seamlessly. It wouldn’t even be that insane of a feature for this day and age and they would guarantee a nice subscription rates

      1. Oh man, that would be awesome! If they want to get rid of emulation they could just play smart and do that!

  6. This should honestly be one of the FIRST things they confirm over the next several months. You’ll get preorders for the next system the very MOMENT it’s available for preorder. (I hope to be one of those people.)
