Miyamoto Reveals His Bad Game

zelda_2_the_adventures_of_link

Miyamoto has finally revealed to Kotaku which of the many games he has created he considers his least favourite. That game is Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. Miyamoto says it’s not necessarily a bad game, but he feels he could have done a lot more with the title. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link was originally released on the NES in 1988 in North America and Europe. The game was a radical departure for the series as it changed between a vast overworld viewed from above to towns and dungeons presented from a side-scrolling view.

“I wouldn’t say that I’ve ever made a bad game, per se, but a game I think we could have done more with was Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.”

“When we’re designing games, we have our plan for what we’re going to design but in our process it evolves and grows from there,” Miyamoto said. “In Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, unfortunately all we ended up creating was what we had originally planned on paper.”

“So that’s a rule of thumb,” I asked, “that if you find yourself at that point, you know the idea wasn’t successful? Or is that you didn’t give yourself enough time?”

“I think specifically in the case of Zelda II we had a challenge just in terms of what the hardware was capable of doing,” he said.

“I’m just curious,” I pressed, “what would you have liked that game to have been like?”

“So one thing, of course, is, from a hardware perspective, if we had been able to have the switch between the scenes speed up, if that had been faster, we could have done more with how we used the sidescrolling vs. the overhead [view] and kind of the interchange between the two. But, because of the limitations on how quickly those scenes changed, we weren’t able to.”

“The other thing,” he said, “is it would have been nice to have had bigger enemies in the game, but the Famicom/NES hardware wasn’t capable of doing that. Certainly, with hardware nowadays you can do that and we have done that, but of course nowadays creating bigger enemies takes a lot of effort.”

Thanks, Nightmare

    1. Not wii music? Does Miyamoto think think it was a good game or did he just forget about it? I really hope it’s the latter

      1. Starlight, The Resolute

He didn’t create Wii Music personally. He was in the middle of SS when that crappy game came out. Skyward Sword, on the other hand, was WONDERFUL.

      2. There wasn’t really much they could do with that game. Making it more complex wouldn’t have been a good idea, considering the target audience with that game was the casuals.

    1. Just finished it last week. It was definitely weaker than other Zeldas, but not bad.
He’s done gimmicky mini game crap that was much worse.

      1. The real problems with it were that it was way too hard (not fun hard like DKC or Mega Man, just frustrating and it was directionless.

    1. Same. I don’t care much for Four swords either , I know it’s a spin off but it definitely doesn’t reach Zelda’s Normal heights.

      1. to me this game is like a parody, its really funny of how much the shitty enemies piss you off from them being cheap pussies and how lame the game can be. still though its that game where you say im fucking going to beat this piece of shit if i like it or not. with some laughs while making fun of everything in the game its not all bad, its just not zelda.

    1. Miyamoto must think he did a good job with Wii Music lol!… I wouldn’t know cause, I DIDN’T BUY IT! :P 💋

    1. Yeah that was a big problem. A lot of very old RPGs just expected the player to know to go to that tiny inconspicuous patch of forest or whatever to get the next key item.

      1. Dark souls is like that. I think it has to more with the new limitations to show how he wanted the game to play like the 2d segmenst in link awakening.

  1. The games WAY too hard. I finally beat the boss of the second-to-last dungeon and now I can’t even make it to the last one without the monsters on the way killing me >.<

  2. I wasn’t expecting this, but I’m not surprised. The original Zelda is a lot of fun even today, and while I’ve never tried Zelda II, I’ve seen a lot of gameplay and it doesn’t look very entertaining, to me at least. Then again, I couldn’t get past the first hour of Twilight Princess without just stopping due to boredom.

      1. No, not lame and dull, but more like long and drawn-out. It is one of the best Zeldas, but it just could’ve been a little…less drawn-out, and more straightforward. TP was epic just unnecessarily long.

        1. well to me, it had some awesome music and yeah it did have some really cool fights maybe even some of the best. the things i felt it did wrong was it failed to capture that darkness that MM had and it wasnt much fun, there wasnt much to do besides go back and forth and the world had noting to do at all in it. it really felt like they tried to hard to capture OOT when they should just leave a classic the way it is and go off doing something different and making another classic MM and WW. making that the dull feeling i got from it.

    1. Twilight Princess was my first Zelda game ever. I have to say… I LOOOVED it. I simply could not get enough! It is the game that really got me into Zelda as a franchise. It is kinda sad to hear that some people didn’t like it :,( 💋

    1. Didn’t the Zelda people say that they’ll go out of buisness if they keep doing Zelda remakes?- Well if thats the case then maybe they shouldn’t remake Zelda 2!! 💋

  3. I actually liked this game .-. More so than the original zelda and especially more than Zelda Twilight Princess. Yeah its different, but to be honest the Zelda series needs another game that is diffirent in terms of formula and layout. It’s needed at this point. I’d like to see another game in the style of Zelda 2.

  4. This doesn’t really read like it’s considered bad – per say – but rather that he’d have liked to revisit it or do more than the limitations of the console allowed. Not that the game was poor. So it’s not really a negative.

  5. If there’s one thing Xbox One offers over other gaming consoles, it’s VALUE.
    V – Very Affordable
    A – Amazing Performance
    L – Lovely Design
    U – Ubisoft loves us
E – Everyone who has an internet connection can play

With SmartGlass, your devices work together to show rich interactive activities and new content related to what you’re watching or playing on TV at the moment.

        2. The Xbox one could have been a great console if did not had all those restrictions but the only one I hate most is the 24 hour check.

          1. The Xbox one will be the the all-in-one entertainment system. Where games push the boundaries of realism. And television obeys your every command. Where listening to music while playing a game is a snap. And you can jump from TV to movies to music to a game in an instant. Where your experience is custom tailored to you. And the entertainment you love is all in one place.

            1. Damn…too bad a computer can do all of that in a “snap”. Bitch, go home. Buy a lab top, and sign up for iTunes, where music pushes the boundaries of realism, as you experience high quality music, and video picture like never before.

              1. Music is More Amazing with Xbox

                1. Your statement is invalid.

If the music was “More Amazing” it would have to be of incredible quality, and sound! However, it would be more accurate if you had said that ‘Music Availability is More Amazing on Xbox’, which sadly is not true, because of the power of smartphones in this day and age.

            2. Xbox One actual facts:

                  Thank you come again…

  6. Zelda II really captures the defining characteristics of Zelda – adventure and discovery. It came at a time when developers were bold with their sequels – took chances and shook things up. It retains the best combat in the series – up close, personal, and exacting. I love Zelda II to this day because it was such a visceral entry in the series, with a terrific world to play in.

  7. Which Morons preorderd an xboxdone? I hope none of you trolls here are buying an xboxdone. If you have one pre-ordered, there is a call back on intelligence, go get some while stocks last.

    1. ^Poser. Zelda II wasn’t a bad game. It was probably the most RPG-like Zelda game of all. Here you thought I was an Xbot. Look at you, you just called a Zelda game bad. The only thing that could be a bad Zelda game would be the CD-I Zelda games and those are not considered canon. To quote you: “Typical Xbot…..”

  8. Good I hated that game. Aside from stupidly hard difficulty level it just didn’t seem like a real Zelda. I only played it for like thirty minutes because of the fact that the enemies are frustratingly hard, although i want a challenging zelda this one is just on a stupid level. There’s barely any hint as to what to do next at least within the time I played it lol it was the furthest from fun

  9. I love zelda 2, and a lot of inspiration came from it for ocarina of time, anyone who finds it hard, HAZ NO SKILLZ!!! It introduced the magic meter, and the formular is a good change for the whole series, we really are in need of a new formular again, and maybe miyamoto is looking at it for inspiration :)

  10. This game is the reason why I skipped over the rest of the Zelda franchise until Ocarina of Time. It should rot in hell. I could never make it past the first couple levels, maybe I could have tried harder, but the game itself was just frustrating.

    1. I wouldn’t say it was my reason for doing the same but I didn’t play a single Zelda game after this one until ocarina of time. Sad I waited so long as many in between we’re awesome like a link to the past and minish cap.

  11. zelda 2 is sweet but so hard, its like the earliest metroidvania game…. had elements of both metroid and castlevania in it… cant see why people never compared it to that genre. the over world map was the hud map in that day.

  12. “The game was a radical departure for the series”. I’ve heard this several times and it makes no sense anytime its said. It wasn’t a series when this game was released. There was only one Zelda game and this was the second one.

  13. Proud Nintendo Fanboy

Wow! I thought for sure it would be Wii Music. He can’t be proud of THAT? (o _ 0)

It’s because of so many people giving Zelda II bad reviews and comments that I never played it.

      1. i’m actually really interested to see what they do with steel diver, I liked the first one, but felt it needed a little more polish. hopefully the free to play idea helps the game and doesn’t hinder it. anyway I’m just curious to see how Nintendo handles a free to play sequel to a game that needed some work, hopefully it will turn out really cool!

  14. Proud Nintendo Fanboy

Miyamoto should remake Zelda II, but change all of the things that he isn’t happy about and make the game better than ever before.

  15. That makes me sad, as this is my favorite Zelda. It had challenging enemies, fun platforming, and great exploration to it. I’m pretty sure I could draw some of the palace maps from memory

  16. Zelda 2 sucked big time awful garbage…..its about time he admitted it…he has made many classics but this ain’t 1.

  17. Seriously? I actually liked Zelda II because it was the most RPG-like Zelda game next Skyward Sword. I thought for sure he would say it would be Wii Music. That was a joke.

  18. Zelda 2 is admittedly my least favorite game, but it would be interesting to see Miyamoto go back to this game and completly change it up. They could possiblly forge a new type of Zelda game that’s more action oriented but still feature a few puzzles. Label it as a spin off series so people can still enjoy the classic Zelda formula.

  19. “The game was a radical departure for the series” Erm… no it wasn’t. It was the second game so how was it? I understand what you’re getting at but what you wrote is wrong.

  21. Zelda 2’s one of those games that you’re obligated to hate when it first comes out, but after fifteen years or so, then you’re allowed to like it. Like Wind Waker. At first it’s “FUKIN GRAFIX” then it’s “BEST ZELDA GAME”. Zelda has a really stupid fanbase. Like the whole “MAJORA’S MASK 3D” then “FUCK YOU, WE SAID WE WANTED MAJORA’S MASK WII U”.

  22. Could I have a statement, please? levaquin 250 mg iv Score! While Katie Couric had her eyes on the tennis court at the 2013 U.S. Open, we couldn’t tear our eyes away from her left ring finger! The TV host, who got engaged to her financier boyfriend of two years John Molner over Labor Day weekend, flashed her sparkler for all to see as she and her new fiance watched the women’s singles quarter finals together on Sept. 4, 2013.
