Aonuma Explains Why The Zelda Link Between Worlds Art Changed After E3

Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma has explained why there was a difference in the art style of The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds between E3 and the Nintendo Direct. The game was shown during a Nintendo Direct presentation where Nintendo president Satoru Iwata introduced a new piece of art that depicted a younger Link than the one shown previously at E3 2013. Here’s what Aonuma had to say about the noticeable change.

“In Japan, where this game is called Kamigami no Triforce 2 in the U.S., it’s titled A Link Between Worlds, so there’s a little bit of difference even in the image the title creates. We’re positing this as… I guess you could say it’s a sequel to the last game.”

“But addressing the artwork, if we look at the original title, you see that the artwork that we used to advertise the game didn’t really match the artwork that was in the game, because the artwork we had to advertise the game had a very mature, adult-like Link. Then, when you got into the game, of course, because of the technology of the time, you couldn’t see Link in any specific detail. So that gap wasn’t problematic, let’s say. However, as we’ve moved on to 3DS and started developing this game, we’ve discovered that you can see Link in the game.”

“I have to say that when we were creating artwork for E3, we really just hadn’t finalized what that artwork was going to be, so the image that you saw, the art asset we used for E3, was almost a placeholder, let’s say. Then, as we started getting further into the development of the game and started finalizing the artwork and looking at the cinematic scenes and looking at how Link was represented in the game itself, we then adapted the artwork to come closer to what you were going to see in the game, and thereby remove that gap that had previously existed in the original title. Also, just letting you know, since it’s not finalized yet, we may see more changes going forward. Please understand that what you guys are seeing is really development in… You’re getting a live, real-time view into development. Please understand what this change represents, and that we may see more changes moving forward as well.”

        1. People forget that video games are supposed to be for kids. Nintendo believes in this. Yet they are able to make hardcore games for both kids and adults, they are very talented indeed.

          1. “Video games are supposed to be for kids”???ok, i’m done, i give up, this guy proves that the world needs world war 3 because there is too many stupid people out there

              1. I have work. I have a feyonce. I have kids. I have free time, so I play games with my feyonce when the kid is asleep #GamesAreForEveryoneNow

              2. THIS WAS MY FAVORITE LINK, untill the switch! It had a perfect blend of 80’s link (which is my fav) and current link. This new on looks like 10 yo Link…As a 1st GEN Gamer, Nintendo has lost the only grit it had left. Now im not saying Nin lost it but, they have gone kinda soft….Metroid other M was kinda to colorful to be dark.

                1. Shut the fack up, stop being all sentimental, it was simply a drawing. Link was going to look as childish in the game as when they first showed it. The piece of art they choose to put on the cover isn’t going to change the gameplay so get over it and just play it. If you want to play a game for it’s grit your with the wrong company.

          2. Video games were never supposed to be for kids you dolt, that was a shitty American industrial era outdated hivemind mentality. Japan never subscribed to that line of thought, and never will.
What people actually forget is that kids can handle difficulty, if you played any of the NES era games you’d realize that they were ridiculously hard, and yet back then kids all over the world enjoyed them to death. Fast forward to now and “Oh but what if it’s too hard for kids!” slander is being spread around like a disease by Soccer moms and gaymer gurrls- funny how that works isn’t it?

                1. Just because they make R18 games doesnt mean fuck all, they make rated movies, kids watch em. I never said all games are for kids, they make some for “big” kids.

                      1. Is that your only come back when you get into an argument?

OH YOU SO DUMB (Doesn’t explain why said person is dumb)

Congratulations, not only are you terrible at jokes, but you are terrible at arguments too.

              1. well at least in the very beginning of video games i am pretty sure that they wanted to make them for children to play with , of course duo to the increasing of the adult audience R18 games began to appear .
the point is it’s not wrong for nintendo to try to attract the young audience , as the beginning of video games were for them , so the retards who blame nintendo for this should understand that .

                1. look at al these babies having a spas attack about the art change…… thats why the zelda fanbase is some of the worst. im more concerned about it being dull and the same old shit.

                  1. people nowadays never care if the game is good or not , they only care about the graphics , oh this game is realistic , oh this game is cartoony it sucks , oh this game has nice graphics , oh the graphics are not so good do the game sucks , fuck all of this

                    1. exactly and thats the funny thing….. dont nintendo fans care more about the gameplay than the graphics?? yeah like you could prefer to like say i hope the wii u version has an art style more like OOT and MM because i thought it was more realistic but yet not dull like TP. like yeah thats fine but when they show us i dont care, i just want it to be fun and take risks with no handholding and no linear bullshit.

its all about the gameplay and creativeness about the games.

                2. Every company tries to attract young audiences. The ones who call them baby games are just trolls. I don’t know why you people get so worked up about them. You’re only giving them what they want.

                  1. you got to admit though its kinda ironic how nintendos mascot is a retarded childish plumber in his 30s who wears diapers because he is mentally 5 years old.

                      1. maybe if you got your hand of your junk while playing your high def graphic pc, you could have some more free time instead of wasting your time.

                          1. You do this everytime LOL. You go and find someone’s dick to suck on, just stop it and I’ll leave you alone.

        2. iwata infected Aonuma , it’s starting to happen , today aonuma tomorrow all of nitendo soon the world please understand the we will be doomed …………… shit it’s starting to happen , i am already infected , nooooooooooo

        3. Eh, don’t care about that part of the interview. What was interesting was the bracelet that the interviewer brought up to Aonuma. *Spoliers, it’s used to turn Link to 2D*.

          1. The Master sword and hylian sheild are iconic to a Zelda saying that you hate them is the same as hating the zelda frachise..

        4. The Troll to End All Trolls

…….Ick. I actually really wish the stuck with the original art style. The new one looks………….. weird….. CD-i-ish….. I mean, don’t get me wrong, i’m fine with them changing it to match more with him in the game, but the new one looks bizarre.

        5. Still not liking the new style. I understand where they are coming from, but I don’t think this style works. It’s just a mash-up of OoT’s Young Link design and ALttP… looks a lot like the Oracles style. Maybe it’s just that this Link’s face is odd. Kinda reminds me of a piggy. Oh well, I’ll still play the game.

          1. I actually like the style and it is something different. I love the dungeon and I wish there are more than just four of them if I remembered correctly. My problem with this game is that I have to ride on my old man all day in the sea like a horny sailor. Look at the endless sea and is that the same water over and over?

I mean a talking boat that say, “Hey Link! Quick! Get inside me!” every single time.

        6. ” Please understand that what you guys are seeing is really development in… Please understand what this change represents, and that we may see more changes moving forward as well.”

its official iwata is controlling him. he needs to go same thing with reggie, unless you guys like shit??

            1. dont go any further… i hear if you hit 25% you wear diapers. soon everyone will have to wear diapers not just nintendo employees and the fanboys. reggie also wears diapers he never out grow them. thats why he got the job at nintendo. stupid iwata needs to go with the rest to change nintendo.

        7. I never even knew there WAS an art style change until I read this post. I never paid much attention. Hmmm, the new art style of Link makes me think of Peter Pan for some strange reason.

        12. I liked the original design to be honest but the new one is warming up to me, but people also complained about Wind Waker’s style at the time, and look how that turned out.

        13. Okay, I may be out of place saying this, but I am going to state my opinion (BLASPHEMY, I KNOW). I think that, while video games are targeted towards the younger generations, video-games also do a lot to appeal toward the older generations, also, because, if you haven’t noticed, there are many themes in video-games that kids would not comprehend, that make nods to things only older generations would get. plus, i am sure that most of us here really got interested in video games when we were, you guessed it, still kids! Now, when you think about it, the art style really makes very little difference. there are tons o games out there that have a very cartoony appearance, but still have dark and mature themes, example: majora’s mask. I remember when the wind waker first came out, everyone was against the cartoony feel, while I personally loved it and found it charming, and now that they’re making an hd remake of it, all i hear is how people love it, and can’t wait to get it. and. plus, you can’t say they never cater to the older generations *cough*Twilight Princess*cough*cough*… now all i am trying to say is that this is still a video-game, and i am going to enjoy it for what it is, or whatever the final product, whether it be cell shaded, and cheery, or dark, with more mature themes, and to all of you who are arguing about it, I just hope you’ll think about all i have said, and play the game to enjoy it, not to criticize it. thank you, and goodnight.
