Mikami Explains Why Resident Evil Moved Away From Survival Horror

chris-redfield

Former Resident Evil and The Evil Within director Shinji Mikami, has explained exactly why the developers moved away from survival horror and took a more action orientated approach with later games in the Resident Evil franchise. Mikami says that it was due to the commercial failure of the GameCube-exclusive Resident Evil remake with led the team to develop future Resident Evil games with a bigger emphasis on action.

“The Resident Evil remake is actually one of my favourites. But it didn’t sell very well. Maybe there weren’t many people ready to accept that. Because of the reaction to the Resident Evil remake, I decided to work more action into Resident Evil 4. Resident Evil 4 would have been a more scary, horror-focused game if the remake had sold well.”

“With Resident Evil 1, 2, 3, and all the rest of the series before Resident Evil 4, I was always saying to the staff, ‘Scaring the player is the number one thing.’ But for the first time, in Resident Evil 4, I told the team that fun gameplay is the most important thing.”

      1. TheStubbsman, explain why ppl go watch horror movies or go to haunted houses for Halloween. There is a difference in being scared for fun and fearing for yours or someone else’s life.

    1. Anubis… you are a 14 year old douche bag who start gaming this gen. You know nothing about the RE series. believe me, when Nintendo buys Crapcom, Resident Evil will be at an all-time high.

              1. Tony Lane, 40 years old, black, Rochester, NY, virgin, no real life friends, Tourette’s syndrome, foot and anime fetishes, graduated form Joseph Wilson Magnet High School.

Remember this? when Adarazz exposed you?

                    1. 11 year old COD playing douchebag acting tough through a computer screen and on the Internet instead of some REAL tough guy’s face. How cute.

  1. Isn’t RE4 the best one too??? No wonder they decided to go in the action oriented direction….When they went action oriented for the first time, the game was a success!!! I guess they just went overboard with it in the next games. They had the right balance of horror to action ratio, I believe in RE4.

          1. It would have been cool if they did but being cool and making financial sense is not the same. Buying a few atlus ips was a better idea.

        1. The “Capcom Six” were all supposed to be exclusive for GameCube but most of them went to PS2 eventually. I don’t see why this game couldn’t have been a timed exclusive as well.

          1. Just resident evil 4 and viewtiful Joe went multiplat the reason I think the others did not must have been a sale limit in the contract. Like if the game sales certain amount of copies it would stay exclusive or that the monetary penalty did not was worth.

  2. Given the fact that Capcom has not had a Resident Evil game crack 5 million since the PS1 I call epic BS on this. The truth is Capcom tried to cash in the 3rd-person shooter crowd and failed miserably.

I don’t buy Resident Evil to play Gears Of War. I buy Gears of War to play Gears of War. Sick of these developers thinking we are so naive. One of the many reasons I’m done with Capcom and why pretty soon THEY will be done.

    1. Resident evil 4 did the gameplay style you love from gears first what gears of war just added was the cover to cover mechanics.

      1. That is completely false. Resident Evil 4 did not play anything like Gears Of War. The play mechanics are totally different. Resident Evil 4 played just like the previous games but from a 3rd-person perspective. Resident Evil 6 actually tries to mirror the actual play mechanics of Gears Of War.

It’s clear that you have never played Gears Of War before, are arguing for argument’s sake, or don’t have a clue on what you are talking about.

        1. *facepalm* was I talking about resident 6 or 4? You noob. I know my gaming do you? Gears of war is a resadent evil 4 clone with cover mechanics added and the scary factor removed deal with it.

          1. Your epic grammar error is explanatory enough that you have no fucking clue of why RE is failing. Resident Evil after 4 took the same direction of the third person genre but left out most of the horror elements. Where Dead Space 1/2 succeeded is where RE failed. Its just not scary anymore and its departing away from its reason to stay in the market and interests of gamers.

I don’t know about you and that I don’t play RE much but I sure as hell know a lot more of reality than you.

          1. Yeah. Money does talk and RE6 barely 5 million in its first year showed its the opposite of horror itself? Even Dead Space 3 did a better job at providing horror.

      1. I doubt that. Nintendo doesn’t have that type of vision or aggressiveness anymore. Otherwise they would have funded Shadow Of The Eternals and made it a Wii U exclusive.

Iwata and friends don’t understand the western market anymore outside of platformers and party games. It would make complete sense and be brilliant for Nintendo to buy Capcom which is precisely why it won’t happen.

Even besides the obvious of franchise like Mega-Man RE, and Street Fighter, what about franchises of the past that people have long called for to be revived like Power Stone or Little Nemo The Dream Master?

        *sigh*

Just millions of dollars left on the table……..

    2. “The truth is Capcom tried to cash in the 3rd-person shooter crowd and failed miserably”

You consider making Resident Evil 4, a game commonly referred to as one of the best games of all time, a failure?

      Are you high right now?

      1. What that dude meant was they continued that genre after RE4 thus distant itself from horror with every major release and failed the hardcore RE audience.

RE: Revelations on 3DS did well because it provided the one thing fans have wanted: Sense of horror such as gritty and dark atmosphere, sudden occurrences and eerie/intensive music. Where did you see that in RE5 or 6 (except some of Leon’s campaign)?

      2. You consider Resident Evil 4 a true 3rd person shooter? What are YOU smoking?

As I stated before RE4 had the EXACT same play mechanics as previous Resident Evil games but just in a 3rd-person perspective. It’s a pretty simple concept to understand and no amount of red herring you or anyone else throw to try and make a point will change that. I understand people purposely ignore facts or ignore a direct explanation to someone’s point in a vein attempt to try and sound intelligent.

RE6 was the first time Capcom actually changed the play mechanics to that of a typical 3rd-person shooter.

RE4 was no different that Last Of Us or Watch Dogs. An action-adventure game from a 3rd-person perspective.

    1. Again using Nintendo as a scapegoat for their own failure to continuing the appeal of the hardcore fanbase. How fucking typical of these blind, douchebag 3rd parties these days.

How RE4 succeeded was not only a traditional game that delivered its sense horror/tension but also was a refreshing change from its old formula. RE5/6 dragged that genre on but failed to provide any good sense of fear. Look at Dead Space 1/2 and even The Last of Us. They provided their own sense of fear and prevailed where RE didn’t. That is until Revelations happened and brought that hope of horror back into the franchise. Crapcom should takes notes of where they failed and stop shoving unproven and stupid blame up Nintendo’s ass to degrade their standing in the market.

    1. How is 1.5 million in a time that just 250.000 was a success bad especially from a single console? Those guys are idiots.

  3. Moving the most famous horror-game series to an action series. Probably one of the worst decisions ever made in the video-games history. This guys are dumb as fuck.
And it’s not a fucking story of gameplay or whatever, These monkeys just wanted money and, as RE4 probably had a big success while the game was a more oriented action than the previous REs. Don’t think I need to explain what happened, do I.

  4. That sucks. Doesn’t he realize that it didn’t sell very well because the Gamecube had a smaller audience that were mostly children? However, I really don’t believe this statement as RE4 went on to sell millions and they changed the series even after that. I think they were just trying to placate to all the COD fans.

    1. Resident evil remake did not sold well because of the wiiu demographic is was because of the dated tank controls that where to hard to control also 1.5 million in that gen was far from a failure.

  5. CoD sells, so every game with more action would sell?

They should just stick with their game mechanics, or kill the franchises.
All they end up doing is kill the interest of fans too, then they have nothing.

Too many games have been ruined when they try to appeal to CoD kids.
And still they end up with sad sales.

    1. It’s the same thing when the Sonyans and Xbots copies our games in some way, they barely sell half the amount our original masterpieces sell…

      1. Perfect example: Super Smash Bros. and Wii Remote Motion controls. How sad is it to hear the masses tearing down Nintendo over the most silliest of all reasons when they’re like the only gaming company on earth left who isn’t pulling strings on gamers in such ways like ripoff other company’s work (Sony), scam gamers with poorly marketed DLCs (EA/Activison’s COD) or even try to pull of the “NSA” BS like Xbox One?

I really, really feel terribly bad for Nintendo going through such times of super blinding ignorance and greed of today’s humanity.

  6. No, he doesn’t. He explains why Resident Evil 4 was more action-oriented than earlier entries in the series. Resident Evil 4 was still survival horror and it sold very well.

We already know why the series moved away from survival horror after that. Capcom reps stated that they’ve seen how well franchises like CoD does on the market and they wanted a piece of that. Don’t twist words. This was about one entry in the series, not the series overall…

                1. But we can sell it to haters? Will sell pure zora water to the haters so they can defile it with their horrible online rituals.

    1. I’m sorry guys but as much as I liked Resident Evil 4, The first three were the best with one and two being top notch. Resident evil needs more puzzles with the horror because to me, that made the game. Now people have an idea of what kind of action sells and I hope they use this to make resident 7 good and not like 5 or 6.

    2. I laugh to myself a little when I see this years commercial for Holloween Horror Nights advertising “the biggest names in horror” and Resident Evil pops up.

    3. Hey Capcom, good cover. When you yourselves stated, when RE 6 was released, that you were making it more action-oriented to cater to the fans of the action genre. And that if we, the fans of the horror-oriented style of RE games, had to look elsewhere for that type of game…i.e. Dead Space. As for RE Remake being a failure, Im not too sure about that, but whatever helps you sleep at night. The “clunky” controls gave the original RE games their own touch on things, just like the cheesy voice overs.

    4. I love the RE remake and RE4 was fucking awesome but… the hell man… words can’t describe the dissapointment the rest of the series brought.

      1. Then go knock yourself out (literally) when playing COD and some cheap camping twat of an 11 year old quickscopes you behind some dark corner in the most BS way possible.

        1. you sound like a very retarded clown. and fyi I don’t play cod. what the fuck is it with stupid motherfuckers like you always assuming someone plays cod for no reason. talk about sad and pathetic.

              1. One can also admit to enjoying RE6, but would have no objection to buying an RE closer to the originals in style if such a game was created today…the REmake, Code Veronica and RE3 are some of my personal favourites.

It is a shame that such titles are hard to recreate in todays market, however…you would have thought that Capcom would have had the foresight to perhaps cater to both demographic styles with 2 different RE gaming experiences, rather than lumber the series with one rather confused direction by mixing them poorly!

                1. you can’t expect games to stay the same forever. that’s not going to get the franchise anywhere. all I hope is that the franchise never goes 1st person or back to the horrendous camera angle of the past games. and as much as people want horror, that shit doesn’t scare gamers of today anyway.

                  1. Try telling that to the rather large fanbase of RE calling for it’s full return to Horror – and those same exact standards you call archaic.

    5. “commercial failure of the GameCube-exclusive Resident Evil remake”. WHAT? Commercial failure? I didn’t even know the Gamecube HAD an exclusive RE remake. Unless they’re talking about the one I own. The very first Resident Evil on Gamecube. I didn’t like that Resident Evil because of the camera angles and play control. Resident Evil 4 was so awesome that it made me not even like the other games in the series. I wish they’d make another one like RE4.

      1. Yes, that was a remake of a PS3 original game, which spawned more sequels prior the remake itself…and is considered the most loved game of the series amongst the fans of the franchise for it’s cinematographic horror themes and general gameplay mechanics.

Yes, people can actually play quite effectively with those ‘tank controls’!
