Keiji Inafune Says Mario Is The Game Creator’s Development Bible

new_super_mario_bros_2_mario_flyingMega Man creator Keiji Inafune has been tied up with development for Mighty No. 9 of late, but he’s been on hand to interview in IGN’s article, which celebrates the life of our favourite red-capped plumber, Mario. Looking at different stages of Mario’s life, several developers and ex-Nintendo employees have shared their memories when it comes to creating their own games.

Nintendo of America’s former VP of marketing Perrin Kaplan said that, to him and many Nintendo employees, Mario was “half digital and half real human” and that his most amazing memory was when Super Mario 64 launched, where Mario could fly in the air. And Jim Merrick, former technical director of Nintendo of America, was also of the same opinion. Merrick thought of him as a colleague and “the guy who brought to life so many of Nintendo’s new products and technologies”.

But Keiji Inafune remembers Mario not as a colleague or a half human, but as the King of the development industry, seeing him as the game creator’s “development bible”. His comment in full can be seen below, but if you want to check out what other developers said, you can view the article, here.

“If any creator has not played Mario, then they’re probably not a good creator. That’s something I can say with 100 percent confidence. Mario is, for game creators, the development bible. There are so many hints about good design, about cute characters, about innovation in using an existing gameplay system. It’s something you have to constantly look at and examine and take hints from as a game creator. It’s the anchor that grounds almost all games.

“I have total respect for Miyamoto, to the point where… It’s very strange that there are national cultural treasures – they’re traditionally sportsmen. I think it’s very strange that somebody as famous as Miyamoto hasn’t been designated one of those people. He’s talked about in all different countries. Lots of people know him. He’s pushed forward Japanese culture and interest in Japan all over the world. He’s somebody that deserves everyone’s ultimate respect, and a lot of that is due to being able to create Mario. And Super Mario Bros. 3, of course, within that, was a fantastic game.”

  1. I didn’t have to wait too long for NUETRON and ” you thought ” to eat crow. Imagine a few minutes after telling them pride cometh before a fall this beautiful article is printed :).

    1. Better append a “game” to that worst company ever thing before certain people have a complete and utter PMS breakdown about how you need to “stop living in the video game bubble.”

  2. “I have always loved videogames from the first time I saw the Atari 2600 and Space Invaders. However, I, much like most of the world, fell out of love with them briefly after the big video game crash in the 80’s. It was when I saw the Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Mario Bros in particular that that love was re-ignited. I couldn’t believe the graphical fidelity of the NES and the scrolling screens on Mario as well as the fantastic design of the entire experience. (A whole generation of mothers were tortured with the music whereas a generation of gamers wax nostalgic about it.) I eventually got so good at the game that I was able to max out the scoreboard at 9,999,950 and I took a Polaroid (the original Instagram!) and mailed it to Nintendo who then printed my name in the Nintendo Fun Club and then eventually in the very first issue of Nintendo Power.

I have that page framed in my home and I’m still proud of it to this day!”

    1. I had already read that elsewhere, and I got very surprised, actually. Recently, some words from Mr. Bleszinski about Nintendo were not so flattering.

      1. Cliffy B has multiple personalities. This one was created by his parents while being a good kid. remember how good eighties parents are. The other mess he learned from the fools at epic.

    1. he says its a possibility. anyway, its obvious that he will return the money to the people who funded mighty no 9 if that really happens… he made it clear that if they will work at capcom, capcom must let them do what his team thinks is right. otherwise he wouldnt go with capcom. now whats wrong with that?..

    2. if you only knew how much EVERY Game company wished that they had the Mario franchise. And that sir is a fact – This is Gamer “Peace Out”

  3. Aside from him.needing to stay away from RPG projects, he really is a great man. He’s acccomplished more than most people.

  4. Well, here’s another religion/video game parallel… a lot of people don’t give a shit about the bible these days.

  5. He is right. God damnit he is right! Theres a reason why Mario has lasted so long, even his biggest competitor Sonic has taked lots of inpiration from the plumber. You dont have a good house if your pipes arent good!

  6. where can i sign this mr. Inafune?
nice that he finds these warm words. i really think he’s spot on. miyamoto is an outstanding artist.

  7. Even though Inafune has his own company now, it sure would have been cool if he would have went to Nintendo and worked with them. But would be SO much better if he had the rights to Mega Man still. I always felt like Mega Man was like a first-party character.
