Super Mario Galaxy Vs Super Mario 3D World Video Comparison

Josh from the Bitblock has put together a comparison of the acclaimed Super Mario Galaxy versus the recently released Super Mario 3D World. Despite being released back in 2007, Super Mario Galaxy can still hold its own, despite being in standard definition. Super Mario 3D World is out now in North America, and on Friday in Europe.

            1. Both great games but they’re still not my favourite/as good/as awesome compared to the legendary mario 64 aka the greatest videogame of all time, in my opinion.

is what you should or could have said. the way you said it sounds like it is fact and you have good reason to say it.

        1. Mario 64 has aged the worst out of all Mario games.

Running around the same map for hours (for this star go halfway up this mountain and for the next star go up the same mountain, jump over the same pits and face the same enemies, go past the star you just collected and slightly higher to get another star) is just an awful idea or a Mario game.

          And the camera is horrible.

Worst console Mario game ever after SMB2.

          But that´s just my opinion

        2. I personally prefer Galaxy, but each to their own. Super Mario 64 was an epic game, probably about my fourth favourite of all time (not counting Wii U titles for now) Behind the Mario Galaxy franchise and Paper Mario TTYD. I can definitely see how it would be your favourite of all time.

  1. Wow, Galaxy fucking shines… EAD out did themselves, while 3D World’s details have this game out classed in every area (especially the surfing level) but this shows when a Wii game can look somewhat close to a next-gen game is just amazing. The Nintendo Polish goes a long way man

        1. Hey, Anubis, how is it going?

          I’ve been away lately…

Well, I’ll always remember of 3D Land as “the game that could be but it is not.”

Does it make any sense for you? XD

Concerning the Wii: I still have some of my greatest moments of playing the Wii. I just loved it, and it gave back that brilliant joy of gaming on a home console. Alongside SNES, is my favorite box ever.

          I think I shocked you… XD

          1. Things are great! Thank you for asking :)

I mean 3D Land is alright. That game made me interested in Mario games again because it was…new! Not only that, it has my favorite final boss in a Mario platformer.

And yes I am shocked :O I hate the Wii…

                  1. I didn’t see it when he corrected himself because i was on my iphone. And i was exaggerating when i said that everyone hated Wii. But i know alot of people who don’t like it simply because it didn’t have alot of power, still a good system though.

                    1. I have loved even the worst systems ever a example is the virtual boy. But that thing had some great games like Mario tennis and wario land also bomberman but it was a lie that he console damage your eyes.

                    1. Just give it a few years and people will miss it and say is the best like they do now for the gamecube. If the gamecube had has many people saying how much they like the gamecube buying it when it was new Nintendo would have beat the ps2!

            1. Hum, I have to agree that beating Bowser in 3D Land was cool. When I thought I was done, I said: “Wait, do we have more?”

But… One of the wrongest errors Nintendo has made in its entire existence was changing the Tanooki’s power up mechanics… That killed my fond memories of Super Mario 3.

                    1. fair enough, fair enough.
last question before i bugger off; did you play multiplayer or alone? and also i suggest returning your game or selling it online and buying another one man

                    2. I usually play alone…

To sell my copy of 3D Land crossed my mind several times, indeed. But I like to keep all my games, even those I don’t enjoy so much.

              1. ha! That’s true, and my I add that I didn’t like about 3D Land was the short and linear, although it was a handheld game, but still.

However 3D World has no excuse. It’s a shame, but hey… at least the music is new and original!

                1. The only song I’ve heard from the game, the theme they used in the first trailer, is annoying as hell and gives me headache. Hopefully the rest of the soundtrack is much better like you claim it to be.

                  1. lol I don’t really like the first one either. It sounds too boring.

However, the lava theme, has a nice beat!

The ghost house theme is actually pretty good considering it’s not recycled like the nsmb’s trash.

And the athletic theme is one of my favorites now. I could go on, but I think you get it. Although it is my opinion.

        1. That makes no sense. If something were obstructing my view then I WOULD find it blurry. Also, if you are determining the graphical capability of 3D World from the video above then you have little pieces of poop in your brain. Go buy the game yourself and see how much better it looks than Galaxy…. Seriously, how are people even arguing over them. 3D World has better graphics, Fact. So Move on.

          1. Most of your arguments are just invalid. Main reason is stupidity.
I won’t loose my time to explain life to you. I just woke up and I’m lazy.

              1. You’re just a fanboy, not worthy of a serious answer.
Get out of here, go masturbate on Wii U and 3DS pictures and let adults speak.

            1. It doesn’t need to be because Super Mario Galaxy was ahead of the graphical curve even being a Wii game. All you need to do is play Super Mario Galaxy upscaled to 1080p and running at 60fps on the Dolphin EMU to see what I mean. Any PS3 or 360 game “****OF IT’S KIND***(and I have to make that distinction because people will try to bring up Gears Of War or God Of War or something an compare Galaxy’s graphics to that) cannot touch Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2. No matter what next-gen game you see from any system be it Wii U, XBOX One, or PS4, Youtube videos don’t even come close to showing what it looks like in person.

Even today as I was playing Killer Instinct on XBOX One. The graphics on that game are gorgeous. However watching a recorded match later on the resolution looked as bad as it does watching a Youtube video.

When I was in a GameStop recently I was playing Sonic: Lost World to try it out. It looked mediocre at best on the monitor. Then when I downloaded the demo for home on my Wii U, the game looked gorgeous.

On a side-note, Nintendo really needs to invest in better monitors for their kiosks. Every Wii U kiosk I’ve played has had terrible monitors and or settings

There is just something about seeing a game live and in person where it is a night and day difference. We’ve reached a point in gaming where compressed video of game content is always going to look inferior to the live product.

    1. YouTube fails massively at conveying the actual level of detail in 3D World’s graphics. Super Mario Galaxy is a marvel to behold on the Wii, but 3D World’s visuals greatly outclass it, even when running it on Dolphin in 1080p.

Seriously, 3D World is astoundingly gorgeous once witnessed running natively on the Wii U, there’s really no contest.

It goes without mentioning that the game itself is absolutely phenomenal! I just beat Bowser in World 8 with the Special Worlds still ahead, and I already feel like this is the best Mario game ever.

      1. I have only played 3D World once and it was on the crappy Nintendo kiosk monitors so I really couldn’t get a good feel of it. However I hope that it looks as good graphically as Lego: Marvel Super Heroes does on XBOX One. I was floored by how great that game looks. I really was. It was astounding how real that game looked. It blows the doors off of anything I’ve seen in that format. I’m sure SM3DW looks as good if not close to that in real-time, but that is my measuring stick in terms of visuals for that type of game.

  2. Naturally 3D World 1Ups Galaxy, but it is astounding to see Galaxy stand tall against it’s predecessor. Both games are fantastic experiences… I am having trouble deciding which I like more. Perhaps they are equal in awesome-ness?

  3. Mario 3D World has clearly better visuals, but Galaxy holds up very, very well, especially considering it’s on something not a whole lot more powerful than Gamecube. The water, grass and textures are vastly superior, but the overall aesthetics are quite similar. I wouldn’t be surprised in the least to hear that 3D world was built on a slightly modified Galaxy engine as is, but it could be a new engine, hard to say.

Considering the Wii U can handle 4 players running around on the screen, not to mention tons of clones with the double cherry power up, and there’s not even a hint of lag, from what I’ve heard so far, I imagine a single player Mario experience, more along the lines of 64/Sunshine/Galaxy’s star collect-a-thons, will likely have even better visuals than 3D world. Especially if they build it on a brand new engine, built from the ground up on Wii U, if they aren’t already using one at any rate.

Gameplay will always trump graphics, but good graphics definitely don’t hurt, and Galaxy/Galaxy 2 are real testaments to what Nintendo can squeeze out of any hardware. I don’t think any developer has ever tapped a console to it’s fullest, in the way they did with Galaxy on Wii. Not Naughty Dog with The Last of Us on PS3, and not 343 with Halo 4 on 360 or anybody else.

  4. Galaxy still looks better and more original, but I guess Super Mario 3D World is the closest you can get to Galaxy on Wii U and a different take on things to keep it fresh.

I guess a Mario Galaxy 3 wouldn’t be bad after all.

    1. No more fucking Galaxy games and 3D world looks better considering its the same art style in HD but Galaxy holds up well, that is a fact that really can’t be disputed

  5. It’s a testament to the greatness of Super Mario Galaxy that even in 480p that it can hold it’s own against an HD-counterpart. Plus the gameplay clearly shines out as the winner although I am currently loving Super Mario 3D World. Super Mario Galaxy is my favorite game of all time.

      1. Nah, yes, literally! :P

Just kidding… But, anyways, it’s impressive how Galaxies 1 & 2 are still fresh and powerful. Not saying that 3D World can’t turn out to be an masterpiece, but the leap of quality achieved by the Galaxy series was stunning.

    1. Fom what i’ve been told it shits on nsmb franchise and destroys 3D land. I can confirm there is 12 worlds in game giving the game 14-16 hours

        1. i think if this franchise replaced it I would be okay as long as they put as much effort in it as they did this game

      1. Definitely puts NSMB to shame and obliterates 3D Land. It is on par with Galaxy most definitely. The final boss in the game is perhaps the greatest final boss battles of any Mario game ever!! Also…Playable Peach!!!!!!!

  6. Im sorry !
But I dont see a big différence :-(
Nintendo is not the Same of my childhood anymore …
Ill go for a PS4 cause there Will be more to come and its much powered than the WiiU !!!
What I want to say is that the consoles are not free ! So Ill take the best to me .
And Im 28 too ;-) So maybe Nintendo isnt for me anymore .
I love them but this Time Ill pass !!!
    Regards,

    1. no problem… but the reason you don’t see a difference because it was made literally with the same studio, same people, same artstyle and the games are literally back to back in releases

      1. There is better detail in other areas in the game like rain effect lighting and ect. Personaly u shouldn’t look at more for graphics. Zelda, and metroid are usually the graphcs. Power has never been my thing i’m sure the ps4 is more powerful, but nothing is going for it until spring, and i’m waiting for KH

        1. Same for KH but the thing about 3D Marios is a way to show how clean you can make it look and anything less than that in quality of graphics is under using the hardware. All 3D Mario hold up amazingly, even N64 does but I haven’t looked at it in a good few months so probably not as much as I remember. But every 3D Mario holds to a point where its scary and this is case and point of that. 3D world looks amazing but the fact that Galaxy next to it holds up is very amazing

    2. Well I found a big difference! 3D World didn’t feel, at all, like Galaxy. The two are tremendously impressive as stand alone titles. Also, why is similarity a bad thing? Sometimes something is so great that a sequel can just be the same thing and there is no issue in that. A sequel doesn’t always have to be an improvement or a innovation to the franchise.

Innovation is only needed when people get bored with the original formula…. clearly Mario’s formula is going strong so why change what isn’t broken?

    3. You have to be trolling, or blind to not see the differences. There are no jaggies, rounded edges are smoother, the textures are FAR FAR better, ESPECIALLY the grass.

PS4’s exclusives will not compare to Wii U’s exclusives, and the graphics will not be “Much powered” over Wii U, but to each their own.

  7. 3d World is quickly becoming my favorite Mario game EVER. SM World will always bring back fond memories and still holds up great, and Galaxy/Galaxy 2 are masterpieces in their own rite, but the level design in 3d World has to be the best of any platformer I’ve ever played, especially for a 3d platformer. Multiplayer is fantastic as well. Visuals, audio, this one’s got it all. Nintendo releasing two masterpieces in one day, good way to take some attention away from Sony/Microsoft.

    1. It is quite literally impossible for your statement to be true, because the Wii isn’t capable of handling the graphical output that 3D World has. It just can’t be done.

  8. I played Galaxy last night after playing 3D World and the difference is much greater between them than what you can see in a youtube video. Every part of 3D World is constructed of far more complex geometry and the lighting, fx, shading and animations are amazingly improved. I think 3D World may be the best Mario game of all time and gameplay is like a perfectly upgraded 3D version of SuperMarioBros3 and World plus taking some 64/Galaxy/Land stuff too. Love it. That being said Mario Galaxy is still a great game and really pushes the Mario64 style gameplay very far. Both type of game is awesome and I can easily seeing some people liking one or the other a little more.

  9. Galaxy looks almost the same. Just not in 1080p and water is not that real looking. But 3D world is literally not that impressive in graphics, if you put it on ps360 it would run

  10. So what I got from this video is that the games are almost the same, except 3D World is a li’l more beautiful and a LOT more blurry.
I prefered the concept of Galaxy too, more original, and the scene where you get the big star is WAY more badass than the flag catching.
Anyway… 3D World seems fun and I heard a lot of good about it.

    1. Ummm yeah, nice try, but you arent as good comedian as you think. Here is better joke, “Tomato walked across the street and became ketchup” HAHAHAAHAHAHAHA!.

  11. Just played Super Mario 3D World today. Such crispy clearness up the freakin wazoo, along with ambience and particle effects. I’d say the same for Super Mario Galaxy, but its presence in 1080p makes the jaggedness so pronounced.

  12. Super Mario Galaxy does not look like the Wii, it’s more high-definition,
Super Mario Galaxy looks much worse on the Wii in 480p!
It was faked, I have a Wii and Wii U!
Super Mario World 3D looks 100 times better!
This comparison is for the gameplay, not the graphics, because the graphics are false,
    improved at 720p …

    1. the footage of galaxy is obviously from the dolphin emulator with a bunch of features the original wii version did not have, anti-aialising and texture smoothing etc. If the game was captured from an actual wii or wii u it would look worse and it does look worse than this footage. i’ll do a proper vid of it sometime using footage from both galaxy 1 and 2 and contrasting it with 3D World, just need a capture card first >.>

  13. Credit really to Tokyo EAD. Their art direction is incredible. Galaxy still holds its own even to this day. 3D World however, you can tell has even better graphics. You’ll get more of a flavour when you see the game for yourself. These comparison videos mask the quality due to video compression etc.
