IGN has estimated that Nintendo has sold about 4.3 million Wii U consoles worldwide to date. An unnamed source who’s apparently close to the NPD Group has told the website that 222,700 Wii U consoles were sold in the U.S. in November. To reach its goal of selling nine million Wii U consoles by March 31, 2014, Nintendo needs to sell at least two million systems per month leading up to the end of the company’s fiscal year. Earlier this month, however, several analysts predicted that Nintendo will fail to hit its Wii U goal.
Nintendo Sold 4.3 Million Wii U Consoles To Date?
The analysts are probably right. Even for the holiday season, 2 million consoles per month is a lot of fairly expensive merchandise to get out, not to mention the issue of physically stocking that many consoles in stores.
The Wiiu has probably sold about 5 million to this day. NIntendo said a couple of months ago that they had sold 4.3 Million units, and as we know, it’s been selling well between then and now.
The Wiiu will get to about 5.5M global by December 31st.
You must have been misinformed. Nintendo has said they have shipped 3.9 million units as of the 30th of september. And this is shipped, as in sold to stores. Since there are quite a lot of Wii U’s on shelves, this must mean that around 3.5 – 3.7 million (stores don’t seem to be stocking much) got sold to consumers.
With that said, your prediction of 5.5M by december 31st does seem plausible, especially since Nintendo tends to sell best at holidays. If sales are around 4.3M now, it has to sell atleast 1M. Knowing that there were times that the Wii sold 2 million units in one week in 2010 (according to VGChartz), the Wii U stands a chance to sell 1.5M to 2M, especially with the release of new software (SM3DW and Wii series), the fact that the other next-gen consoles will probably stay sold out until 2014 and have no enticing software for people having to choose between the 3 consoles.
I predict that the Wii U will have sold 6-6.5M by 31st of december and 7.5M-8.5M by the end of the fiscal year (which is 31st of March) because of the release of Mario Kart 8 in spring.
There´s something definetely wrong with all those numbers. According to VgChartz.com, 4,5 million WiiU were sold until Dec,7th. Those are numbers of retails sales and not shipments.

well it’s past December 31st now and they didn’t sell 5.5 million globally, would think that they would sell a lot after announcing Mariocart 8, the new Smash Brothers game whatever it’s called and the new monster hunter game, but 200k+ Wii U sales is less than expected.

Well, gamers should pay attention to it, but for other reasons. Not for fanboy/console wars, but rather recognizing that sales are important to the longevity of a system and companies. If a system doesn’t see the necessary sales, then the amount of developer and third party support will likely wane.
Remember that companies do not make money off of systems, but rather the software and accessories. So if nobody is buying the systems nor the games and accessories to use with the systems, it will affect a gamer’s future with regards the particular company’s future outlook.
How can you call people who like Nintendo, Nintendo fan boys? Just because someone doesn’t like the same console as you, doesn’t make them a fan boy, and who’s to say that because you like a different console that you’re a fan boy. Oh, and I’m pretty sure those “true gamers” playing COD are mostly kids younger than 12.

Nintendo will live on, but their presence on the Console business may be over. They don’t know how to market, they have no games, and the Wii U’s graphics look more like a PS3 than a PS4. It really stands as no competition at all.

Last fiscal year, Sony said that they’d sell 16 million Vita’s, then reduced that to 12 million, then reduced it to 10 million and yet again reduced it to 8 million. They came in at less then 5 million. Things happen, stop being an asshole.

There really shouldn’t be a price drop. It’s an amazing system, and it’s $100 less then an even more amazing system and $200 less for a console not worth buying at the price of $500. Besides, there already has been a price drop.
I was against the first price drop, but the way I look at it now. The Wii U is not even going to sell for Christmas. If Wii U doesn’t sell for goddamn CHRISTMAS! Then it won’t sell at all. It needs another huge price drop. Make the Wii U bundles $200 so they can actually MOVE some consoles and then they can establish a huge install base for them to sell a bunch of games.
Once they have the install base they can make back the money they lost on the console with software.

maybe, maybe not… i was at toysrus paying off mario and luigiu bundle on layway and a lot of people bought it… although no one bought the deluxe or basic since it cost the same as the mario and luigiu, well there was only 3 left so most of them either bought deluxe, basic or zombiu bundle even though zombiu bundle cost the same as the ps4.
We’ll know for sure in a little more than a week. I really don’t hear any hype for the console and I just don’t see it selling the amount it needs to this holiday. If it doesn’t, Nintendo needs to go into attack mode.

No, no. The price is low enough. They’re already taking a loss on the system. None of these companies make money off of hardware, but as you said, the software. The problem is, the current trend is showing that Wii U owners do not support the games that come out on the Wii U. So dropping the price of the system even more is no guarantee that software sales will pick up, even *if* hardware sales pick up.
There are great games on the Wii U currently and gamers are constantly passing them by. It’s a shame, really.
Nintendo just needs to focus on advertising in 2014. They have a great lineup for the Wii U that year, so they just need to push those titles as much as possible, through every medium. If these big titles do not move systems at the current price (the lowest of the three next-gen systems), then not even another price drop would move systems.

You’re right about the launch hype. The difference is, the PS4 still has a ton of demand and only sold that 2.1 million because of limitation in stock to meet that demand. Some estimates put at least 3 million more people are waiting to buy a PS4. Also remember, the system hasn’t been released in other regions.
But anyway, this was just the Wii U’s first year. We should definitely wait at least another year before passing judgement. 2014 is going to be a key year for the system considering the titles slated to launch during that year. I hope it will bounce back, but if these upcoming titles do not move systems, then I’ll start fearing for it.
Wii U is NOT going to be another huge success like the Wii, but it could definitely be the GREATEST Nintendo fanboy console, because they are coming out with a fantastic array of games and the console has only been out for a year. Ummm… the Gamecube sold 22 million worldwide. It’s got a long way to go before it hits that point. Analysts are projecting 25 Million for the lifetime of the console.

That may very well be but your forgetting a few thing.
1. Nintendo didn’t have much of a market for the wii u at the time.
2. Sony is suffering even after the launch, including it impressive 2.1 sales because they had to cut so much out of the company…including their entertainment department.
3. The once Sony employees are now and just barley making it is now in charge of Nintendo’s commercial campaign.
4. I may matter to the “hardcore” gamers if showing kids only but that’s what makes them fools to the eye. “Never judge a book by its cover”. Many…many so called hardcores just stick to blasting heads off…while the real hardcore gamers play multiple systems, any game they can get their hands on, and just have the fun with anyone they can. I agree in some terms there but I think you needed to be corrected on a few things your forgot about. I’m not gonna lie, Ninja gaiden 3 did catch my interest and so did Mario Bros. and dynasty warriors orrichi hyper 3. I had fun slaughtering peoples and demons, playing with my family and fighting hundreds of enemies at one time. It’s why I bought my first wii u so I can enjoy Mario bros. and hardcore games at the same time…beats going back and fourth on consoles, that’s for sure.
