Nintendo America Posts Wii U Overview Video To Convert Wii Owners

Nintendo of America has produced an extremely effective advertisement advertising the Wii U as a brand new console from Nintendo. While it may seem too little too late as many people have already purchased their Christmas gifts this year, the video goes a long way at explaining the benefits of the system and the key differences between Wii U and the original Wii console. What do you think to Nintendo of America’s latest advertising campaign?

Thanks, RetroGamingLord

    1. Ha, it does kind of sound that way. Anyway, it’s nice to see a good advertisement, though it may be too long to run on TV. Not sure how long US adverts generally are.

          1. We at Nintendo are hoping to meet a mark of 9 million Wii U hardware sales by the end of our 2013 fiscal year (ending March 2014). *wipes sweat with a $100 bill* Please understand, and please help others understand that the WiiU gamepad isn’t a food tray.

  1. How is it too late? You would not believe how packed malls and stores are going to be this weekend. Also decent advertisement.

  2. wow … they still have features of “your grandma wants this”.

1.) it doesn’t work in my bedroom, it’s too far away
2.) the only people who will ever watch this are us … the nintendo fans … the people you aren’t trying hard to impress – instead your trying to get my grandma to buy one for her kitchen.
3.) it’s 2 minutes long … where’s this going to run where people are stuck for 2 minutes these days?
4.) nintendo already said that people finally know what WiiU is … yet, this video suggests they’re still trying to explain it.
5.) what happened to the kid to throws the picture of the bird at the TV? … that was always a good explanation of WiiU

    1. Please understand: we are not in direct competion with our rival companies. Instead, we wish to take a different approach to the competition–while still being able to appeal to everyone. *counts money* Have you and grandma-san played Wii Party U yet?

    1. “whole new nintendo experience”, “entire new technology” and “Just look for the U!” now if people cant understand the difference between the two then somethings wrong with them heads – This is Gamer, Peace Out

      1. You’d think people would know by now.

I mean how can they not. It’s just as easy to see that there is a letter on the end of the console – same thing applies to PS. PS, PS2, PS3 and PS4 – what’s hard about that, unless some people really are plain stupid.

    2. I think Nintendo should try to explain the GamePad is a new technology, since they really didn’t explain it and just boasted about the software.

And at least Nintendo didn’t call it the Wii II.

  3. One year too late, but it’s better than nothing. At least it show that Nintendo understands what need to be done in terms of marketing going forward. Even with the epic botchery of the Wii U in 2013 it still is in a pretty decent place and has a chance to do well in 2014.

  4. people upgrade their iPhones … cause they’re still using the old one.

most people who purchased a Wii aren’t using it anymore … why would they replace something they don’t use?

think of all the things you don’t use … think real hard … there is an upgrade probably … and you don’t care!

there’s nothing wrong with the WiiU … but, there was something wrong with the Wii success … it was an accident

    1. I really wouldn’t say the success of the wii was accident. It was a success, in marketing, acceptably, its good libary, uniqueness and ect.

      1. no, you know all those day-time tv shows? … the Wii was gimmicky enough that all of them featured the Wii … it had “motion control” … it was on all the fake-news and daytime talk shows and late-night crap because it was a good entertaining 5-minute segment. It was everywhere … it was FREE MARKETING because it was NEW.

the WiiU will not be on any of these shows … how are they supposed to show you a gamepad these days? … we all have iPads … there is no gimmick to show people to generate interest.

        right??

        1. Gimmicky? Are you kidding me? If something has never been done before that means it’s gimmicky? Tell me who else did motion controls?

Yes Sony took the plunge, but it was not where near as good as the Wii Remote, in fact Sony copied them….

If something has been created, original and never been done before, then it’s not a gimmick. Oh I am sorry, I forgot you Xbox and PS players don’t actually understand gaming.

          What an idiot you are.

    2. no it wasn’t, past generations sony won because of stuff unrelated to gaming, PS1 could play music CDs, and PS2 was a freaking cheap DVD player, kids will pitch this to their parents and they will be buy it is simple as that, now Nintendo with the wii, introduced a new way to play, and it was freaking related to gaming, how the fuck is that “accident”?

      1. you now, i will agree with … i think i explained above that the “accident” was that the Wii was buzz-worthy. good point with the PS2 as a DVD player also. I used the word “Accident” but don’t hold it against me … like the points you made, the Wii was easy to show or explain to a room full of idiots … the WiiU isn’t.

        1. my family is not that much into gaming, and past holidays we have a blast with NintendoLand, maybe, it is hard to explain Wii U with words, but the second you play it, everything clicks.

    3. The best selling versions of Disney infinity, sky landers & just dance 2014 were all in Wii, people are still using it.

      1. the number of people using the Wii 7 years after it launched are probably the same number of people using the Gamecube 7 years after it launched.

and, if that’s true it might say something about most people who purchased the Wii.

      1. correct, but normal people don’t give a rats @ss … only us gamers … and we’re rare.

again, my grandmother doesn’t want a WiiU … even if you explain it to her over and over again.

    4. Exactly!!Wii was released at the perfect time and was the perfect time to show motion controls to the world. It was prices $300 cheaper than its rivals, came with a free game Wii Sports and also launched with Twilight Princess!!
It brought family’s together to play games and even granparents were hooked.
Nintendo NEVER should have gone with the Gamepad was stupid mistake. They should have released it as a protoype just for fans, and then decided if they were gonna release it from all the feedback.
The fact that they put all their eggs in one basket with the Gamepad and no backup plan if it fails is what has happened in the first year.
They should have just released an a better Wii mote, with better accurate motion controls!

  5. If Nintendo had released this a year ago, and made sure it had lots of air time, it would have been a big help. Great advertisement, but it’s coming almost too late, and shouldn’t have been needed in the first place.

They couldn’t help themselves, by using the “clever” Wii and U to name the console though, made it look very similar to the Wii, not to mention the Wii had that U draw tablet, that looked kinda like the gamepad at a glance, only adding to the confusion. If they wanted to keep Wii in the title for casual gamers they attracted, fine. Wii 2. Simple. Easily understood that it’s brand new. I mean, the iPad 1&2 look freaking identical, yet people immediately understand they are different, and those differences are MUCH smaller.

Could have made a big difference in sales, and would have saved them so much money making multiple “difference” commercials.

  6. Excellent advertisement that dispels popular misconceptions. However, is this ad going to have visibility—will they show it on popular channels???

  7. This video should have been at launch. Why has it taken them a year to do this?! I have friends come around (PS/Xbox owners) so they are aware of the industry and they don’t even know what a WiiU is or whether it is actually different. Its been a couple of good months for Nintendo in terms of releases but right now theres less than 5 games I am looking forward to. It needs some surprises.

    1. desperate? … absolutely … it’s embarrassing to the true nintendo fans.

instead of releasing more of this marketing BS to nobody … how about N64 games to the people who actually bought this system?

  8. Its a little too long but it gets the point across good job Nintendo! If only you put this out earlier but better late than never

  9. That is how it should have been explained. A year late and and month later. This should have been aired before PS4 and XBONE came out.

  10. HOly Shit¡¡¡¡¡ An actual good comercial from Nintendo depicting the Wii U as an actual New console not related to the Wii¡¡¡¡ I do not know what to say, I never think I will live the day to see one of this…

I think I can say is: Well done, Nintendo, Well Done.

      1. absolutely!!!!!!! … start pushing for more sales from the fans rather than trying to recruit my grandparents.

Satoru is busy deciding which 1 VC game to release next week.

      2. I’m just afraid that whoever they hire after Iwata might not care about Nintendo’s stances in the gaming world. The next president could put Nintendo games on IOS devices or stop making hardware due to not so profitable sales.

Obviously Iwata isn’t a “good” president, but I would rather have him with his ideals in preserving the company than get a president who will ruin everything Nintendo stands for.

        1. IOS isn’t the answer … but, since you brought it up … Steve Jobs did amazing things for freeing music and making music more profitable than ever.

If all nintendo games were available on IOS, they might be better played on optimized hardware (like nintendo hardware). Nintendo could use those profits to make continuous hardware (like apple makes continuous hardware). If all nintendo games were available on IOS, you better believe they would all be available on Nintendo Hardware. Currently, you can only get all nintendo games on PC … same thing with music right? … only IOS presents you with high-quality and vetted music and provides easy access … nintendo can learn a lot from modern business models.

          1. IOS market is kinda not as profitable as people think. Square, capcom, and namco haven’t had that much success.

  11. It’s good, but where is it going to be shown? I haven’t seen this or any Wii U adds on T.V. or more importantly, Youtube or Facebook!

      1. Well I think the Nintendo UK branch tries harder than the U.S branch… we never get anything, but some earlier localization sometimes.

  12. The only thing missing in this video was realistic games like Bayonetta 2, X etc. If Nintendo wanted to really to sell the Wii U, they should of also showed those games to show the Wii U capability cause to me they making the Wii U seem like a Wii on a bigger screen

        1. Do both. PC for third-party games, RPGs and FPSs, and one/two consoles for the exclusives.
It’s a lot of money, but if you’re a gamer, it’s what you need.

  13. This Advert will be extremely effective, I cannot wait to show my friends the coolness of Wii U, this is an amazing time for Nintendo and Nintendo gamers alike

      1. I have alot of friends and i’m not going to invite each and everyone of them just to give a timeshare salesman speech so they can buy a Wii U, besides this works on a much larger basis, countries, nations, cities, continents etc

  14. Wouldn’t it be amazing if one day Nintendo allowed the console to do other things than play games – of course aside playing DVDs because we have players that can do that.

What I am talking about is they can create apps that couldn’t have been done before.

I know some of you what a bad device, but look how the iPad took off. I didn’t see the point in it, but now look at it, people use it in businesses. Now I am not saying Nintendo should do business-esque apps for it, bu they could allow another SDK to let the Gamepad do anything – the possibilities are endless.

There could be more potential than we know. Just suggesting.

    1. What gave it away, the Pokemon or the brightly coloured creatures that are led by a little elf man, or no maybe it was the pink ball of magic creature that gave it away genius? Rob, you are so retarded it scares me

  15. Video was OK, but it just made it look like every other console. It needed to show what makes it different.

Just looking at the games, it amazes me how Nintendo are able to make their games look so good after all these years. Leave luck to heaven.

I cannot think of one other developer that comes close to their quality.

  16. LMFAO!!This SHOULD have been released when the Wii U was LAUNCHED!!
Seriously to wait over a year to release a video that tells consumers the differences between the Wii and Wii U and then Nintendo wonder why the Wii U has sold so badly?
Their marketing from day one has been a complete joke.
All they had to do was name it Wii2 and ALL the confusion of it being just an add on would have been avoided!!
Videos like this will do NOTHING!!

    1. Well it is a new console. It’s the newest Nintendo home console.

Wii is an old console, Wii U is a new console. Are you too stupid to see that?

  17. My God Nintendo are so out of touch. They still think the only problem is that people don’t know the difference between Wii and Wii U!!!! Haha that is hilarious, oh if only that was all they had to worry about. Enjoy that stack of cash you made from the original Wii and the DS/3DS ‘cos it’s gonna get eaten up quick you absolute clowns…

Seriously they are pretty much screwed now whatever they do, but to even have ANY chance of even minor success with Wii U they need to:

*Invest a huge expansion to their software operation, increasing manpower and facilities to allow more games to be worked on at the same time – and for those games to be out much much quicker.

*Triple the number of annual releases

*Aim to release major new titles of EVERY. SINGLE. NINTENDO. FRANCHISE (Zelda, Metroid, Starfox, F-Zero, Pilotwings, Wii U Sports Resort, Kid Icarus, Mario Galaxy 3, Pokemon Wii U)

*Create several NEW franchises – people are getting sick of seeing the same old selection. Sony have created more new series in 8-12 years than nintendo have in 30+

*Do all of the above, like, now!!!!

  18. If it took this long for such an ad, they are *in Soni’s voice* tooo sloooooow! Being on a budget can be a good thing and a bad thing based on Nintendo’s hesitance to use a lot of money for ads in the past years. I can’t blame them since it’s their first time going HD.
