EDGE Awards Nintendo Publisher Of The Year

Respected UK games publication EDGE has named Nintendo as the best publisher of 2013. Nintendo was up against Ubisoft and Sony Computer Entertainment, but managed to scoop the acclaimed accolade. Here’s what EDGE had to say about Nintendo in 2013.

“With no new hardware to launch, Nintendo spent 2013 focusing on games, and it’s been uncommonly prolific. 3DS got the best Animal Crossing, the best Fire Emblem and, in X&Y, perhaps the best Pokémon yet. On Wii U, we had a loving Pikmin update and the vibrant, majestic Super Mario 3D World. Also encouraging was a willingness to partner with external studios. The Wonderful 101 might not have hit the mark, but it represents a welcome shift away from total dependency on peerless internal studios.”

    1. Im not even being a fanboy when i say that. They created so many new ip this gen ALONE that are really fun and memorable. Mario 3d,zelda,wonderfull 101,pikmin 3, and im pretty sure im forgetting more but that shows how awesome Nintendo is as a game developer in 2013.

      1. ” They created so many new ip this gen ALONE ”

They created a lot of games, not new IP’s. The only new IP would be Wonderful 101.

        1. Pushmo, Dillion Lost Western, Steel Diver, Tokyo Crash Mobs… you really don´t know what you´re talking about.

  1. Good to see some media appreciate Nintendo’s excellent games. Mario 3d world is for now my most played game. Combining play time from both my Pc and Wii u.

  2. In regard to Hardware, everyone will shit on Nintendo, but when talking about Software not even Patcher would dare to say a bad thing about Nintendo.

  3. The 3ds games this year were pretty rock solid, very little hiccups with their games compared to other publishers. Wii u games were ok at best this year. They can have it this year based on how lazy the other guys were

      1. Nintendo games tend to drop price lower than any other Party out there. This has been known for a long time. Look at the DS games, and the Wii Games. NSMB is still hasnt dropped below $30, and thats the used version. Smash for Gamecube is still well over $25 and thats used as well.

        1. *great games mostly never drop in price cuz 360 and a few others are still priced well over 30$ on those console like skyrim.

    1. Not playing ALBW is doing an injustice to yourself. Unless you can only afford one game a year, then I won’t judge for being selective. ;)

    1. Pretty much like every Platinum game.
Happens all the fucking time, first Bayo, then Vanquish, then Revengeance, now W101, it’s released, it doesn’t sell, is reviewed by idiots, then a few months later gets called the best game of the year.

  4. Well, they did release three of the best games this year I’ve ever played: 3D World, Pikmin 3, and Link Between Worlds!

  5. At first I was like “really?”, but then I saw 3DS games were included then it all made sense. Yeah Nintendo totally deserves publisher of the year.

  6. Id agree with that.

Aside from quanity of games, as well as quality, mainly on 3DS, a few on WiiU, actually FUNDING Platinum, not just for 1 but 2 games is enough for me.
On top of that, im sure they had their hand in alot of pushing localisation for games like Bravely Default ect. Instead of spending their money funding a shitty David Cage game…instead of getting Yakuza 5 localised…or Zone of the Ender 3 made….or…a game.

  7. Well deserved. Nobody out there makes better and more fun games than Nintendo. Next year also looks very promising for Nintendo.

  8. It is pretty obvious, Zelda Wind Waker HD, Mario 3D Land, Pokemon X,Y , Zelda Link Between Worlds,Fire Emblem, Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, and more, the list of games Nintendo has provided was surprising this year, That is why I believe Nintendo won.

  9. Nintendo just delivered hit after hit. The 3DS had so many great games across the entire year that it blew every other system out of the water with high-calibre games. You can mention one, maybe two or three amazing games on every other system, but the 3DS had at least one standout game every quarter. That’s just the 3DS. The Wii U might not have got as much love, but if Nintendo pool the same effort into the Wii U in 2014 as they did the 3DS this year, it’ll take care of itself.

A worthy award to a more than worthy publisher. One game shouldn’t (and doesn’t in my book) be the reason a publisher wins the publisher of the year award, it should be a string of games, which Nintendo have delivered this year.

  11. Completely deserved it, why?

Super Mario 3D World= the second best 3D Mario for me
Zelda A Link Between Worlds= best Zelda since Ocarina of Time
Fire Emblem Awakening= the best Fire Emblem yet
Pokemon X&Y= true evolution for the series and likely the best
Animal Crossing New Leaf= the best Animal Crossing yet
Pikmin 3= Instant classic and best in the series
Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon= better than the original
Wind Waker HD= stunning remake to one of the all time greats

Sony had their published games but a lot of them weren’t really the best of their IP’s, they didn’t really move them forward or improved.

God of War Ascension= disappointment, worse than GoW3 which says a lot. Nowhere good as the PS2 originals.

Ratchet & Clank Into the Nexus= a weak comeback, not better than PS2 originals, not even better than Tools of Destruction.

Sly Cooper Thieves in Time= another weak comeback, not as memorable or good as the original trilogy.

    1. ^ This so much!!
AC is one of the most entertaining games I’ve ever played, Pikmin 3 is my Wii U GotY, LBW being my actual GotY. Mario 3D World is the #D Mario I’ve had the most fun with, because of easter eggs, music, level design, and multiplayer! Fire Emblem, as my first game in the series, was quit epic, and while I haven’t completed it, I have around 40-50 hours in it! Pokémon XY, while a little easy, was the best since 3rd generation, and going the right direction. Luigi’s mansion was fun, completed with 40 hours, and still play online sometimes. Wind Waker is one of my three favorite Zelda games ever, but I don’t count remakes!

    2. Nintendo had a great year for releases. I’m *still* playing Animal Crossing (actually just restarted since I upgraded to a 3DS XL).

Regarding your comment on Sony though, I thought Into the Nexus and Thieves in Time were great games. I didn’t play Ascension though. I’m done with that franchise as it stands.

  12. I’m glad we are getting good reviews for the Wii U games after a barrage of speculated “Wii U is going to fail, Nintendo should stop making consoles.” A lot of negative reviewers forget that the Wii U is to the PS4 and XBOX One as 2DS is to the 3DS; A budget system for people in able to play the latest games, plus it has remote play, it also backwards compatible with practically every original Wii software (with the exception of some non-game channels which are pointless to download anyway), Sure the Wii U doesn’t have too much new physical games coming out due to some 3rd party companies skipping it, but look at how much the console has already, more than enough for people to get their hands on.

  13. This year for the 3DS was incredible! The Wii U did pick up in the second half of the year, but Ubisoft deserves a lot of credit as well. Rayman: Legends, Assassin’s Creed IV, and Splinter Cell: Blacklist. Hopefully Watch Dogs won’t disappoint.

  14. HAHAHA! That guy who named NIntendo one of the big losers of the year must be pissed when a publication more serious and famous like EDGE names Nintendo The Publisher Of The Year! XD

  15. Pubisher of the year?LMFAO!!
    What a joke!!
Pikmin 3,Super Mario Bros U,Luigi U, Nintendo Land, Windwaker HD, Super Mario 3D World all FAILED big time sales wise and did not shift huge amounts of units that Nintendo had hoped!!!
Yeah publihser of the year when nearly all Wii U games are just HD rehashes…wow such innovation!!!
In over a year the Gamepad still has zero killer games for it that prove Nintendo’s point of that it makes the game and gameplay so much better and then they wonder why 3rd party have turned their backs!!!
Edge are Nintendo guzzlers just look at all their reviews for Nintendo games!!!
