Trade publication Games Industry has listed what they deem to be the losers of 2013. Among those listed are Insomniac Games, Microsoft, Digital Pricing, and Nintendo’s latest home console, Wii U. The publication says that Nintendo as a whole are fine, but they believe that the Wii U is technically over as the big hitters failed to substantially drive console sales. Here’s what they have to say.
“Nintendo is fine. But the Wii U is over. It didn’t really begin, to be fair. It’s not going to sell 9 million units in this financial year as predicted by Satoru Iwata. Nintendo has its head in the sand. I will be surprised if the Wii U is in stores next Christmas, apart from knocking around the bargain bins and/or the retro sections, where delusional Nintendo fanboys refuse to accept the inevitable. Apart from a handful of games that are in Nintendo’s own house there’s nothing to wait for. And that myth that Nintendo games sell Nintendo consoles is clearly just that. It’s a myth. Wind Waker HD, Pikmin and Mario may be great games but they haven’t been system sellers.”
“The big question earlier in the year was whether new consoles from Microsoft and Sony would follow suit. They didn’t; both have gotten off to a flying start past the two million mark. Over a year from release and the Wii U is shuffling along with no support from third parties. Again, the Nintendo faithful point to in-house development, but it’s clearly not enough to shift units. Nintendo hasn’t heard the advice to fast fail. This holiday season is the last roll of the dice – the bundles on offer are good value for money – but the system looks out of date sat next to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. To the consumer it’s not clear what differentiates the Wii U. It looks cheaper, it has a tablet that’s barely used and once again it’s surrounded by those all too familiar cartoon faces. Nintendo preaches to the converted but the converted aren’t enough to sustain the Wii U business.”

Releasing new hardware over and over is what made SEGA drop out of the console race. It would be a really mindless, stupid decision to repeat history. I doubt even Microsoft would do that, if they were in that situation.

People always act like Nintendo need to have a super success like the Wii to survive? And that’s bullshit. All Nintendo needs to avoid is doing a ”PS3” which is losing a considerable amount of money on each console sold. They’re not doing that with the Wiiu, hence they are totaly fine. They might lose a bit of Market share to their competitors, but they can always gain some back.
All in all, 3DS is shaping up to be a super success and the Wiiu is shaping up to sell like the N64 or Gamecube or Original Xbox, most likely even more. And as we all know, there is no shame in that.

The Wii U is bombing. They are making little profit off of it, if any. If something is not making them money, no matter what it is, it will probably have to be gotten rid of. It doesn’t matter if that’s their main hardware or not. If it’s not profitable, it’s not profitable. That goes for anything. I’m hoping Wii U does fail, frankly, so that Nintendo can ditch home consoles and start developing for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. While I agree that the Wii U arguably has the best first party titles, it’s pretty much fact that Nintendo made a so called “ps3”, allready in the first year of the Wii-U. They’re only losing money on the system. Those few who buy the system, will not buy many games because there aren’t any. The games is where they’re making their profit.
I remember reading about that Nintendo is selling the Wii U at a loss, after their last price cut. And besides, you might like to know that the PS3 dis better than GameCube, N64 and Wii U combined.

Wii U was originally profitable after one game sold for the system and now they get some parts cheaper after first year. They really don’t make big losses with Wii U because software sales for Wii Sports Club, Wii Fit U and Super Mario 3D world can already keep it somehow profitable. It just doesn’t print big money like Wii, DS & 3DS did.

That is why Ubisoft has not wiiu big titles coming in 2014, other than watchdog that was pushed back that was under development when wiiu launch. But they stopped development on their HUGE A titles.

Wind waker HD is using the gamepad pretty nicely, but others seem to think all it is is a stupid map…..

that feature is not as amazing as some make it out to be. it rarely comes in handy unless your Wii U is in the family room where the TV is frequently occupied. most gamers don’t keep their consoles in the family room (and i use “family room” loosely, it could be your living room or whatever you want to call it) because they want to game in the comfort and privacy of their own room.

Which is why both Sony and Microsoft have also made an effort to emphasize the feature with their consoles as well, only you’ve got to buy a Vita or a Smart Glass instead of getting the feature right out of the box.

wii u has the BIGGEST AAA lineup out of all consoles. and its predicted to sell MORE by march than what the other consoles are predicted.

“Biggest AAA lineup” is debatable, but 2014 does look like a great year for the Wii U. It has only been one year that the system has been out, so we can’t write it off yet. Hopefully the heavy hitters that are being released in 2014 will help move consoles. If not, then we can begin to worry about the future of the system.

The author of the source article went full retard. However, Microsoft did have a pretty painful year too, even with the short-term success of the XO. Sony’s nowhere to be mentioned, though clearly the Vita’s in even worse shape than the Wii U, though I feel this is due to the PS4 being a runaway success at launch, so it papers over the Vita’s cracks a little.
The comments in response to that article sum up what I’d say, so just read them instead.

While I myself am not particularly a fan of it, it is still used by many industry professionals, publishers, devs, and is part of the “Gamer Network” that includes Nintendo Life, Push Square, VG247, Eurogamer, etc.

You forgot that Mario Kart Wii sold more than NSMBWii and the Galaxy games… I expect the same to happen for the Wii U, but I do see a big spike at launches of those games but also higher normal sales afterwards and that’s a good thing.
Also, the Wii U is being sold at a loss. Low sales could be seen as a blessing until materials get cheaper and they make a profit of the console alone.

It’s changed gaming for me again, I don’e even need to pause a games to switch something, just do it all on the gamepad, or if I want to kick back and watch TV, it can be used as that. If I have had enough watching tv, I can power that off with the game pad and then play a game on the screen – now that is a great idea.

The Vita had year launch ahead of the Wii U. The majority of what needed to be said about it was said during that initial year – the same way the Wii U has received a lot of flak during its first year. Once something new hits the market, attention shifts onto the new instead of the old.
I know you are crusading and desperately want to defend Nintendo for everything, but try being logical from time to time. The Vita is essentially a dead horse that has been beat 100000 times over. Now those same individuals who beat on the Vita are beating down the Wii U, until the next thing comes along for them to beat on.

Ignoring you miss my point. In less than a month Pacter predict Wii u doom and gloom. Yet only one doom and gloom articles on vita once a year. In early November Side posted a bunch of Wii u doom and gloom articles. Last week was another doom and gloom Wii u article from some devloper who has no interest in Wii u. Vita gets no daily gloom and doom articles. You posted a link about vita in 2012. And of course Sony will not doom and gloom their on product but once a year.

As I said though, Google is not a viable means of staying up to date on news considering it relies on your limited parameters.

The Wii U, on the other hand, just wrapped up its first year.
Although, a bit biased, the author does hit some key points, specifically on the watered down support of third parties. If it wasn’t for Ubisoft, it would be almost non-existent. I got a wii-u as an x-mas gift last year. Besides mh3u and pikmin, there’s been jack to play up until recently and that’s only been SM3DWorld. Zelda is just a rehash. Although a great game, it’s not original. and the new SMB 2D sequels are overkill at this point. I feel like the ONLY games on the horizon are Brawl and Kart 8 and that’s a sad outlook of the whole next year.
Let’s also acknowledge that almost anything Nintendo did would barely make a dent in the holiday season. They were facing the next gen console releases of Sony and MS for Christ sake!!! A next gen that was way past due for both competitors.

But I will give them credit, Nintendo really suck at winning third party suport, I do not know what they are doing, but is definetly not good and the fact that Nintendo is so dense to cater mostly to the Mario/Zelda demographic is really sad, yes they are their bigest mascot, they are like Superman/Batman, but they are not the only one out there, they have so much more that not only cater to the familiar friendly.
If Nintendo want to go “solo”, then Nintendo need to get bigger to actually survive, buy other studios and let them use that other Nintendo Ips that Nintendo seem so desperate to never touch again, and that is not counting the other Ips said studio could bring to the table, or that they already have (cof, cof CAPCOM, cof, cof) but even that idea seem to dificult to fathom with Iwata on charge, after all they did not bid for Nothing of THQ and they let SEGA win Atlus and chances are, SEGA have not plans to put something of Atlus on the Wii U.

I do agree Wii U is in a bad spot but I don’t like all the hate that this console is getting. Noone EVER brings up the 3ds or PS3 whenever they talk about consoles failing. Both of those pulled out well with some of the best games of that console specification. Fire Emblem Awakening and The Last of Us are some of the best in their specific genre in YEARS. I don’t get how “Professional Journalists and Developers” sit there and judge a console when they have NO IDEA of how the console is going sell. Most consoles have a solid start, the Dreamcast had a solid start but got raped by the PS2. I’m not going to damage control for Nintendo since they fucked up bad but people need to learn to be patient.

Go ahead and google articles on how the 3DS is doomed and nintendo failed. Now it’s the best selling system week to week. Wii U sales have picked up significantly and will grow exponentially once Smash Bros, Kart 8, and Zelda WiiU comes out. I think a new metroid, and games like X and Bayonetta will bring a few inboard too

Why are there so many articles like this about the Wii U yet nearly none on the Vita?!? The 1st fiscal year for the Vita, Sony had said they’d sell 16 million, then 12 million, then 10 million. They ended up selling less than 5 million. Was Sony’s head in the sand?
There have been tons of articles on the Vita “failing” and “sucking” and Sony being “doomed.” You’re just not going to find it on “MyNintendoNews.”

You don’t have to dig deep at all. If you stay up to date with current news and articles, you would have seen them. They (negative articles on PS3 and Vita) were quite abundant over the past few years. Now that there are new products on the market, the focus shifts. It always happens. Out with the old news, in with the new.
I do stay up to date. I Google Ps4 and I get, it sold 2 million in 1 day. I got to dig really hard to find fault articles on Sony.

Also, 1 mil. for Sony PS4 on the weekend, middle of December 2.1 mil. and projected 3 million by the end of the year. It depends on how much it passes that or if it maintains momentum which is could cause of the Japan launch, so see if and how much its doing better than the Wii U.
Negative articles on the Vita….really, they are so few and far between. There are much more negative 3DS articles about it failing than Vita.
And the few that are around, are pretty light saying things like its a great system that didn’t reach its full potential yet and it would do better when the really great games come out, Vs the 3DS articles were there are no games, and Nintendo is doomed leading to Nintendo should make smartphone games. And articles were they go on how weak the 3DS is and 3D is a fad and would doom them. They even now write articles about the 3DS as a failure, even after it has reached 40 million.
The media isn’t very harsh on Sony at all, considering the finical trouble the company is in for many reasons.
These stories are getting tiring and all too reminiscent of the way they spoke about the 3DS for the first year or so and look at it now?
Sure #’s may not beup to expectations and may never be but the Wii U is seriously underrated for its innovation.
In my house we have an xBox 360, PS3, PS4, and a Wii U. We recently bought Lego Marvel Super Heros for the Wii U because this game has a huge advantave on Wii U vs. any other platform – I can play with the gamepad while my child uses the pro controller and the tv. No split screen nonsense or playing tug of war pulling each other across the map as we explore in different directions!

The only major problem the Wii U has is that the games don’t really feel different enough from past games (NSMBU, 3D World, DKCTF, and Mario Kart 8 being examples). The games would sell better if they were more creative and used the Wii U’s gameplay features more. Show gamers some games that demostrate why the Wii U is a new, next gen console that’s worth owning, that’s a surefire way to increase sales. Don’t get me wrong, there’s some good games on the Wii U and more on the way, but without more of a hook to the gameplay, none of them can be “system seller” good. That’s why the sales are where they are now.
