This week’s Japanese sales charts are now in courtesy of Media Create for December 30th to January 5th. The Nintendo 3DS firmly remains the best-selling video game hardware with 187,920 units sold. Interestingly the Wii U was outsold by the PlayStation Vita this week. Wii U sales were 60.548 while PlayStation Vita sales were 88.169. The fantastic Pokemon X & Y were the best-selling piece of software. Here’s the Japanese hardware and software charts.

Not really a mystery, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD was released with a bundle for the Vita as well.

these numbers are good, but they are not good enough to reach nintendo’s own goal to sell 9 mio (!!!!) units until the end of march!!!!! additionally these numbers are not high enough to build up a relevant user base fast enough.
to be realistic the situation für the wii u is not better after the holiday period – ok, sales have gone up due to games like super mario 3d world, but not high enough to compensate the very low numbers of 2013. and if sale numbers stay at the current level during 2014 they will also be not high enough to garantuee a big user base.

6-7 I’m guessing thats how long the ds lasted, most likely nintendo is working on portable home console for next gen, since The merge the handheld and console devs together, and wii u is screaming that possibility.

Great for WIIU! PS vita is almost certain to outsell the Wiiu lifetime in japan due to it being a handheld, that being said the Wiiu did outsell the Vita for a few weeks running prior to xmas.

If the vita starts to sell well in the west too it could get a lot of great games.
Still, 60000+ is a lot better than the 20000 it was getting a few weeks ago. And this year with games like X, Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze and more – it’ll get better
X might do well, do wellwe will have to see. Hyrule warriors will do well since japan loves DW. DK might do well. Don’t know why people give it hate, the devs did great with that gundamn version, most likely they will add other zelda elements too the the game as well. Japan does love mario kart. Smash brothers don’t know how they feel about,and bayonetta is mixed in japan they do like it over there, for bayonetta’s character.
Smash Bros in Japan is like Cricket in India: not a game, but a religion.

Gundam crossover with dinasty warriors is a pile of shit. . . I love classics dinasty warriors and i have high expects for this zelda version BUT PLEASE dont compare it with the gundam version, it sucked so hard.

For me, from a hardware perspective, the Vita is the best gaming handheld I have ever used – and I have played almost all of the major ones that have released in the U.S.
With that said, it’s true that the *games* on Nintendo’s handhelds tend to be a little more engaging and have those recognizable franchises that we all love to play. Still, there are tons of games on PlayStation’s handhelds that are great; both on the PSP and Vita. There are some lemons as with any gaming system, but I wouldn’t go as far as using a broad statement like, “[Sony gaming devices] are lack luster.”
Either way, I’m enjoying the heck out of my Vita and 3DS XL (yay! I finally upgraded) right now.

That’s fine. It’s not for everyone. I hate the ergonomics of the 3DS and the circle pad is a pain to me, but I love the clam-shell design and the games that come on it.

Final Fantasy X HD bundle for Vita really helped boost sales for the handheld. However, Pokémon has a happy habit of outselling Final Fantasy, and has done for a long while.
Mind you, Super Mario 3D World gaining big momentum in the chart too? Despite the Vita outselling the Wii U for this week (a big game release will do that, remaster/port or not), it’s good reading for Nintendo fans. Nothing seems to be able to hold a candle to the 3DS worldwide actually. Further evidenced that 2013 truly belonged to the system.
