Iwata Admits Wii U “Isn’t In Good Shape”

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has admitted that the Wii U isn’t in good shape at the moment and that the company is actively looking to remedy the situation the console has found itself in. Iwata then went on to say that he’s looking at ways to rebuild Nintendo and is likely to make an announcement during the investors meeting.

“The Wii U isn’t in good shape. That’s the presumption we have as we consider reform.”

“I’m concentrating my mind on how to rebuild Nintendo rather than how I would take responsibility when things don’t work out in the future.”

Thanks to those who sent this in.

  1. Want to know why Iwata? Lack of games and bad marketing, I like the Wii U, but there needs to be more 3rd party games and better marketing

    1. exactly. Wii U need 3rd party support that really utilizes the gamepad or even doesnt rely on the gamepad. Dont make the gamepad as a “gimmick”

    2. i agree with the marketing part though games is not what it is lacking. it is lacking THE game like monster hunter 4 or pokemon. nintendo should have secured the monster hunter 4 to wii u not 3ds. and if they are going to put a pokemon game on they have to take whatever the “pokemon” on the handheld has and put it on wii u.

i think mario kart will be good for the wii u but they need to market it until every one knows that it exist. though they still need at least 3-4 more must have games and monster hunter 4 could have been one of them but sadly it isnt – This Is Gamer, Peace Out

      1. Sadly Monster Hunter isn’t a “must have”. 3 Ultimate was on the Wii U and didn’t seem to save it there.

No Smash Brothers mention? Zelda Wii U? There are games in the pipeline, just a while away.

        1. Zelda is like mario it doesnt need to be mentioned it sells by it self they are like bread.

monster hunter 3 was on wii and 3ds before. why buy the same game twice? that works only with pokemon. you may be right on the “it isnt a must have” part. though it would boost the wii u sales alot if it was a new game

while i do love super smash it will probably only sell 2 – 3 million in its first year and somewhere around 700 thousand wii u’s… well it depends on the hype – This Is Gamer, Peace Out

          1. To the whole ” No Games and Marketing ” situation.
Nintendo knows they need to market but they know not to market at this time because ,like everyone says, it has no games. Why the hell would Nintendo ad the WiiU when it has barley enough games to ad? Though early adverts may be good, it’s pretty much putting a pre-mature advertisement cuz there aren’t many games out, prime examples are those stupid embarrassing kiddy adverts out for WiiU now.
Back when Wii ads were about you seen everyone playing anticipated games that were out. (Metroid Prime 3, Zelda, Smash etc) And lets not forget the “Wii would like to play scheme” that made everyone enjoy the ads.
With WiiU Theres plenty of suggestions.
            “Can Wii join U?”
“Wii would like to play……With U!”
and so on… thing is…once the big games come out the big ads should come out.

    3. Actually I think the 3rd party thing is debatable, because of the 100% of games 3rd parties put out like 10% are good ones and everything else is occupied shelf space or crap. Not everything they make is like GTA or COD that move millions.

    4. if new super mario bros u and super mario 3d world along with the windwaker remake did nothing for wii u, what makes anyone think that nintendo has a chance at all?. even the mario kart for 3ds sold much much less than mario kart on wii, so mario kart on wii u will save the wii u about as much as the two super mario games did. mario didn’t even save the wii u during the holidays. the problem here is the wii u console, it’s low tech, it has no games to prove its worth (no game uses the gamepad in innovative and surprising ways). the wii u is a console that is not wanted in the market.

    5. Actually it became pretty clear what was wrong. Their move to buy out 8% speaks worlds about what kind of control investors had.

this move makes it pretty clear that it was investors that demanded the push of Mario and and other sequels. Rather then working on new IP. It also makes it pretty clear that they also demanded the Wii U be under power and to stick with power PC over moving to X86.

yes they should have done more aggressive marketing. Especially during the holidays. But honestly I’m ok without AAA support. Granted I can’t wait for watchdogs, but I rather see Nintendo put big efforts forth to support the indie devs. Its the indie devs that could one day be the next ubisoft or Bethesda after all, and they well remember Nintendo being that early stepping stone. In the end their is a few key things to keep in mind.
      1) Xbox One and PS4 plan on 10 year life cycles
      2) Nintendo updates their home system every 5 years (4 left)
      3) Nintendo has made it clear they are stepping up their game, which means their next system well be a 400$ x86 system, with a full use 100$ gamepad that well most likely work as a full tablet as well as a controller.

but honestly they need to expand their business to more then just games. They can do so much more, honestly they should be as big as Disney.

    6. Bad marketing + bad media = Instant Kill!
Xbox One got outsold by PS4 because of that, and notice how (based on website reviews) Xbox One games were better (scored higher).

    1. Better marketing and great games…Star fox please. You know star fox has the ability to become, stealth, action, shooter adverture game. Use elements from assault, adventures and 64. We have mission where fox has to sneak in a enemy base by foot, have him explore ruins, and fly to world to world rail shooter style(like kingdom hearts gummi ships), and have all out shoot outs like assault. I see so much potential for fox that, i’m stun they never tried to go the route more. F-Zero really all they can do is add online really.

      1. You sir are great at this, why you no has job at Nintendoh!

And Miyamoto said he just doesn’t want to just put online and better graphics into F-Zero, while I think that they should do that for the time being to get people happy

        1. I do plan to work with nintendo I pitch a few ideas to them.
“Super Mario Dimensions”, “Ice Climbers Sky mountain”, Bowser’s World Rampage”,”ProWrestling Star Slammers”, and some new ips. I sent the idea of mario to nintendo, but do to legal issues they could not accept. Bowser i sent to next level games(have heard back), and ice climbers still working on

          1. nice dood, who knows, If I make it in the industry and work with Nintnedo, I could be working on one of your IPs

            1. I do wonder If american dev that i hope to be can work among nintendo never read any about it. I do have one goal in find when working at nintendo one day…Bring gamers together instead of the this pointless war. Try make gamers stand by instead of against, like it has become.

        2. here’s my view on a new F-Zero: Better graphics? Required. Online play? Freakin REQUIRED! New ideas to the series? nice, but Not required. Not that any of my two cents matters, I’ve left Nintendo for Sony after the Swapnote disaster. I just don’t trust them anymore, and there’s not enough compelling games for me to open my wallet outside of their first-party titles

          1. But you trust a company who handed information of 77 million accounts including credit card infos to hackers?
Well, I still trust them more than Microsoft.

      2. I was playing w101 and there are soe levelz that r old school shooters (think star fox or even 1942) and it struck me that these games dont really exist anymore. I dont think ive ever played an epic shooter on a big flat screen with surround sound. For that reason star fox should he made into an epic shooter :-)

  2. The gamepad is already a gimmick, along with motion controls and 3D. Make a system with a regular controller. Make great games. That’s all you need.

    1. Really as we go futher with gaming graphics can’t be the selling point any more, they are going to have to add stuff that sees gimmicky to some, but it will push for longer life. I don’t see the game pad as a gimmick, its really been useful in wind waker and pikmin. My friend told me it works great Deus EX.

      1. I love gamepad features almost every game Wii U has, only downside is, that I’m forced to play off tv mode most of the time, but deus ex is pretty good even on that.

        1. PS, not saying RetroGL is an idiot, but most using “gimmick” for a feature they don’t like is just stupid.

          1. I completely agree, the term “gimmick” shouldn’t be used in the gaming industry. Because when it comes down to it. Nintendo has always made a new controller for each of their systems.

            1. The gaming industry is a business like any other aiming to gain sales, so “gimmick” shouldn’t be an exemption. The Wii U’s main focus is the gamepad (which, BTW, highly resembles popular smartphones), so by definition it qualifies.

              1. Okay let’s get deeper in your idiotic way of thinking. The floor mat for the game twister is a gimmick. Umm let’s see, pieces of any board game are considered gimmicks as well. Not sure what your fascination with the term gimmick is, but it’s stupid.

                1. Neither pieces of a board game nor the mat for Twister are a selling point. There’s a reason the Wii U gamepad resembles smartphones. You don’t seem to understand what “gimmick” means.

      1. “You might as well add every controller in gaming history as a gimmick. Such a stupid thing to say.” [ Gee, what a coincidence!]

Again, neither of you understand the term. You may find joy out of using the gamepad, but it’s still a gimmick.

        1. Nope, you’ve missed the point.
It’s a gimmick in the way every controller ever is a gimmick.
The touchscreen is a gimmick in the way every new button added to a controller is a gimmick.
          Seriously, people.

          1. Seems you missed “main focus”, “selling point”, its resemblance to smart devices and the definition of gimmick.

            1. Wii U has loads of selling points.
The fact that the Wii U is the only place to find the Nintendo experience and games has been talked about a lot by various people, including company executives. Would you call that a gimmick?

  3. Nintendo needs to start listening to their fans. The internet is full of things the fans want, but Nintendo is very reluctant to listen, although I must say they did change one thing that was really good, to do away with the system transfer limits for the 3ds.

3 big things I would like to see:

    1. Games, Games and did i say Games!!!

    2. All digital purchases need to be tied to the buyer who needs to have the right to re-download at will on at least 2 consoles at a time. If a system gets stolen we should be able to deactivate it from our account and re-download it to our new system.

    3. Port all retro games to the Wii U and even 3DS, and sell them for less than is currently done. And if there are games that are for sale on both systems then we should only have to buy them once to play on both systems.

  4. How about just marketing it properly and releasing games that people want? Games wise it isn’t too bad a situation with what’s coming up but marketing on the other hand…

  5. Along with this he also said, “Further price cuts are unlikely to instantly spark interest in the console.” So there’s that to chew on.

  6. 1 put more on the virtual console. also games from handhelds
    2 do good marketing
3 make games that use the gamepad: nintendo land 2
    4 make more online games
    5 make games
6 and maybe some more games

  7. OF COURSE ITS NOT IN GOOD SHAPE HAHAHAAH!!!!!! its the biggest flop of a home console since the saturn!! with a very big difference, gimmicks!! nintendo really has fucked up amd you fanboys cant deny it anymore, ive been right the whole time!!!!

    – THE REAL ICEAZEAMA

  8. I heard that word so many times, you keep admitting the Wii U hasn’t done very well, also that you’re responsible for that, what I want to know is how are you going to fix that? more games maybe? more concentration on the Wii U? that’s what I want to hear

  10. What I would love would be an HD Nintendo console with a controller very similar to the Gamecube. It’s unfortunate that Nintendo feels like they have to be the one to take risks with all these weird gimmicks that nobody really wanted in the first place. Yes, it’s healthy for competition and the industry, but in the end I always feel like they’re the company that loses because of it.

    1. Many of us want the game pad.
You sound like a pro controller kinda person. That’s cool.
STOP CALLING MY PREFERRED CONTROLLER A FUCKING GIMMICK.
      GOD.

  11. Alright I lost faith in Iwata today, I can only take so much. He needs to be replaced, he has completely lost it. After reading his comment today on his plans.. My brain about exploded in absolute confusion.

“During a conference held in Osaka this morning Nintendo’s President Satoru Iwata mentioned that he’s “thinking on how to make the company stand up again” as reported by the Asahi Shinbun.

Iwata-san also mentioned that one of the problems of the current generation is that the company wasn’t successful enough in attracting the youngest areas of its target customer base:”

“We haven’t been targeting children enough.”

I mean WTF!!! How have you not been targeting children enough is my question..

    1. Whoa, seriously!? Do you mind linking that to me?

If this is true, then yeah, this guy needs to go. I feel like everything they market is towards children. If that’s the direction they feel like they need to go, I’ll be done with Nintendo 100%…Something I’d never thought I’d say.

        1. So buying a wii u was a very bad idea, if its going to be “childiest”
Well, I regret buying one even after playing 3Dworld. Is good, but not that good. Wii U has no killer software whatsoever. Mario Kart will not change this, not even smash.

If nintendo is going full childish software, we can kiss metroid, star fox, f zero and god knows what else goodbye.

Its sad. I used to love nintendo. But then again, maybe I’m just too old and nintendo left me (us) behind. Maybe we should live with it.

  12. I would say that it’s all about IMAGE. The Wii U gamepad should have been an app for iOS and Android instead that could be used in a cool way. And when you have a console that is not supported by a game like GTA V then the real issue is quite obvious.

You need a cool console, period***

  13. What WiiU NEEDED was to launch with a strong lineup of 1st part software, or in the very least, a steady stream of first party software during the LAUNCH WINDOW.

It’s called a Launch WINDOW because there is a range of opportunity where people can be “wow’d” by the launch-factor.

Nintendo missed it. They can get a few sales spikes a la MK, Zelda and Metroid, but if one of those games isn’t EPIC, it will only cause spikes like we saw with 3D world and some with Pikmin.

Nintendo needs to have a “Re-Launch” of their console. Find a way to thank the early adopters, and a way to dazzle those who are waiting for “something else.” (this was actually Iwata’s Idea)

If they don’t, they can look forward to slow sales for the entire WiiU lifecycle. They should be grateful if they manage to break even.

  14. What Nintendo needs are games, they could cone out with such good games yet they decide to make more Mario because they think it will sell, no more Mario for a year or 2. Make an amazing star fox, an amazing metroid, make a new 3D donkey Kong like donkey Kong 64, make an insane FZero that could compete with modern racing games but make it much more, bring out a killer Zelda thats skyrim size and doesnt hold your hand through it all, bring out a good pokemon thats massive, make a 3D Kirby gane or YoshI game? A 3D Kirby would be awsome, they have sooo much good IP, yet choose to release Mario every year and nothing actually significant, Nintendo has the power to make all these great games, now it’s up to them to decide wether they will use it, or just keep releasing Mario and hoping people will buy it

  15. The U needs Killer Games, like uncharted, the Last of us, Heavy rain, GTA
Etc. That are exklusiv. Not just Mario andere Zelda.
There Must bi Games for adult that also Looping Great.
Nintendo Must make a Genius Game with Story telling.

  16. More Online and Voice Chat for gods sake its 2014. Not everyone can get together and play at the same house. Nintendo is killing people with no online on some games give us the option. Nintendo has great first party games that everyone would luv with great online voice chat and party chat.

  17. Pingback: Iwata amette che Wii U è un problema e si riduce lo stipendio - Games969.com

  18. The Wii U launched in an over-saturated console market, with few games. The Wii U was viewed as underpowered, it was seen as an Xbox 360 with a new Gamepad controller. The Wii U was abandon by most third party games, like Bioshock Infinite, Grand Theft Auto V, and no Metal Gear Solid V coming, no Tomb Raider, no Final Fantasy Lightning Returns. The Wii U should have included the Pro controller in the box with the Gamepad and a wiimote plus nunchuck. The Wii U needs more games and third party is not bringing any games to it period. So Nintendo has to buy third party games support or buy the Japanese third party developers and publishers, it is the only way they will survive. Nintendo should have bought Atlus, they should buy Sega. Nintendo should see if they can buy Namco, Tecmo, Konami, Capcom and Square Enix.

  19. Fanboys:At 1st I was like:Wii U’s just fine!Tots&casuals being a main priority?Game drought&3rd party abadonment?Nothin’ wrong w/that!

*Iwata: Wii U’s not in good shape.*

    Fanboys:Then I was like:Dayum!Wii U needs more games&3rd party support!Fire Iwata!

  20. It’s ridiculous that you can’t play online multiplayer on Super Mario 3D World and NSMBU, and Donkey Kong Country TF. There better be really good online for SSBU and Mario Kart 8.

  21. Hi, Neat post. There is an issue along with your web site in web explorer, could test this? IE nonetheless is the marketplace chief and a large part of people will leave out your great writing because of this problem.

  22. You actually make it appear really easy together with your presentation however I to find this matter to be actually something that I think I would never understand. It kind of feels too complicated and very broad for me. I’m having a look forward on your next submit, I’ll try to get the hang of it!
