Capcom is currently running a contest for Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate on the Nintendo 3DS. The contest asks Monster Hunter fans to submit a weapon design based on one of the fourteen weapon classes available in-game. If you design is chosen then it will appear in the game, which is a nice reward. You can enter, right here.

  1. Reading the terms and conditions, and wtf…

“7 Winner Notification. Winners will be notified between 6th May 2014 and 2nd June 2014 via an e-mail from a Capcom representative, to the e-mail address supplied with their entry. Notified winners must respond to the selection e-mail to validate their contact details. Winners must claim their prize by responding within 7 days of first contact. Winners’ names will be available on request by e-mailing contest@capcom.com.

If a Canadian resident wins a prize, that person must also answer correctly within a 5 minute time period a mathematical skill-testing question without the benefit of any calculating devices before the prize will be awarded.”

          1. Designing a video game weapon sounds like it takes some skill. Do they do the same thing with the lottery?

It is also to avoid being labeled as “illegal gambling.” There are three things that make up gambling which are a 1. a prize with value 2. the sponsor can benefit financially from the sweepstakes and 3. the winner is chosen at random.

In order to prevent your sweepstakes from being called “illegal” you have to remove ONE of these items.

In the U.S and in other countries the law has removed the ability for sponsors to benefit financially from their sweepstakes. In Canada they took a different approach and tried making each sweepstakes skill-based (adding a math question) to thus defeat the idea that you can win simply by being lucky.

The math problems really aren’t that hard. One for example could be, 150 x 4 / 2 + 10 = ? You solve the question, you get your prize.

      1. Monster hunter weapons are too heavy for me, if the game could incorporate smaller weapon designs maybe I would unleash my arsenal of beautifully designed weapons and ideas among this obviously one-minded group of developers

        1. There are sabre style ‘Dual Blade’ and ‘Sword & Shield’ weapons in Monster Hunter that are quite light looking (as well as insanely large and heavy looking swords in the same classes).

Unless you honesly are suggesting the inclusion of daggers or kunai with blades shorter than the thickness of a Dragons Scales (which would be pointless if you think about it), that is as “Light” as can reasonably be possible when essentially being asked to singlehandedly take down Godzilla and Friends with a handheld melee weapon.

          1. Ugh… I hate not being able to edit a comment. I always notice mistakes right after posting them.

First, some of the swords I’m thinking of are technically Rapiers, not sabres.

Second, the way I phrased it “Unless you…”, I made it sound like I thought a Dagger/Kunai class would work, even though I was arguing that it would not.

“Light” weapons would just be useless against monsters that size. All blades would need to be long enough to pierce through a giant monsters inches-thick scales/hide and then deep enough beyond that to also reach the vital points within its body, over and over again, with enough structural strength to not SNAP like a twig from strains of being embedded into the multi ton body of a moving beast.

The handful of light and narrow bladed sabre/rapier/etc blades already in the games stretch ones suspension of disbelief as it is by claiming to be made of near supernaturally strong materials.

Too bad the Monster Hunter series has the worst gameplay mechanics of any 3D World action game ever.

As Sonic once said, “Your too slow!”
