Darth Maul-Focused Game Was Meant To Come To Nintendo Platforms

Game Informer has revealed that a Darth Maul-focussed game from Lucasarts was originally meant to come to the Wii U, Nintendo 3DS and the Wii. Sadly the intriguing project was canceled back in 2011 and the game never saw the light of day. You can read some of the details surrounding the Star Wars title, below.

  • Being considered for Wii, 3DS, or Wii U
  • Main character was Darth Maul
  • Red Fly began handling prototype work in 2010 under the code name “Damage”
  • Project became a multiplatform release and shifted development to the Wii U, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC
  • This was “due largely to Nintendo not meeting financial demands to make it a first-party project”
  • Game would explore the origin story of Maul’s transformation into a Sith Lord
  • The game would center on stealth and action
  • George Lucas also stepped in at one point and changed the project’s direction
  • Changed things to make Darth Maul and Darth Talon face off against Darth Krayt and his Sith army
  • LucasArts also considered the possibility of purchasing Red Fly
  • In June 2011, LucasArts ceased its communications for unspecified reasons
  • They eventually sent out a letter stating that the game had been terminated
  • Red Fly Studios did manage to continue on despite Darth Maul’s cancellation
  • This cancellation lead to Red Fly having to lay off about 70 percent of its staffers

    1. There’s a difference between bankruptcy and not willing to risk a financial deficit.

But I do agree Nintendo made a dumb decision not to fund said game.

      1. so they could sink money into it only to have it cancelled? doesn’t seem to make much sense

besides this game was funded by lucas arts not nintendo, nintendo merely didn’t pay for it to be an exclusive

        1. you mean games for people who publish childish and completely stupid videos on youtube such as yourself? hey welcome aboard ;)

  1. Hey all you Nintendo hating trolls, If your gunna make fun of the Wii U with this game that never existed, then it seems your running out of things to troll over.

  2. SherlockWillFightBilbo

The game could have been trash, just saying.

Obviously, I’m not the only one who thinks so, considering the higher ups cancelled it.

  3. Nintendo is my Blood

You all do realize that the game would have been cancelled even if there wasn’t a lack of funding do you?

    the game was StarWars property

in October 2012 Disney bought the rights to Star Wars

We all know that Disney can do what ever they want with Star Wars and therefore they might have planned to cancel this game before it was fully produced

  4. LucasArts had lots of WiiU projects one of them was multiplatform title BattleFront3. Its sad thing that such a capable devs who created excellent forceunleashed games had to go under just because George likes to rape everythin, i bet Disney milks SW to death now.

    1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

They apperantly have over dozens of new Star Wars movies planned over the next 25 years or so…

    1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

      Highly unlikely…

Zelda is more likely considering they almost showed it last year…

  5. Nintendo should have made this first party. This game looks awesome and I would have bought it day one. What in the hell was Satoru Iwata thinking?

  6. I would have been MUCH happier if there was a Knights of The Old Republic type of game for the Wii U, rather than a “Darth Maul” game

But that would depend not only on Lucas Arts/Disney, but also on BioWare

  7. Finally this story came out. I’m glad this ended up leaving the devs niche, even a little bit late. Believe guys, there is much more in the background. And let’s see what Simply G, the guy who always blame Nintendo fan base for games skipping the Wii U, is gonna say. Oh, he’s gonna say nothing. He’s the dodge queen, the hypocrite guy who dissimulate he knows nothing about the monkey business in the gaming industry.

    1. This game was cancelled due to Disney’s acquisition of the Star Wars franchise (’tis a shame). The same thing happened to Star Wars 1313 and a bunch of other projects. What else is there to say?

      1. What else? What a stupid question, Simply G.

Maybe you are pretending you did not have the chance of taking a look at this roundup:

        http://nintendoenthusiast.com/news/how-nintendo-and-lucasarts-new-ip-exclusivity-deal-as-well-as-the-entire-project-fell-through/

Please pay special attention to this excerpt:

“It was at this time that the team learned that the negotiations between LucasArts and Nintendo to make the Darth Maul project exclusive to a Nintendo platform had collapsed – “due largely to Nintendo not meeting financial demands to make it a first-party project,” Game Informer reports.”

Then, this means this is finally unveiled. A secret that was kept away from the spotlight for years. But I know you knew it since then. You just pretend you didn’t.

But that’s fine, I’m aware that you’ll keep blaming the Nintendo fan base for not getting third party support and overlooking all the atrocious moves from Sony and Microsoft to preclude proper support for Nintendo platforms.

        1. You talk about this as if it was the big secret of the world, maybe the game was shitty or Nintendo didn’t want to pay enough money for a game not that good or that they knew was not going to sell that much, but that excerpt just explains why it wasn’t a Nintendo exclusive.

Yeah, it wasn’t a Nintendo exclusive ’cause I guess Nintendo didn’t care, but clearly it says that it went multiplatform, what happened then? It was still coming to Wii U, but not as an exclusive, the only thing Nintendo did was to not meet the financial stuff to make it exclusive, but then it was still coming but multiplatform and it got cancelled and that had nothing to do with Nintendo, it looks like it was the acquisition of Star Wars by Disney, so at the end we didn’t get this game thanks to Disney.

  8. Speak of the devil. I watched the Clone Wars episode when they re-introduce a crazed Darth Maul. Makes me sad they cancelled this game.

  9. I happened to run Into Darth Maul once during his Sith training. He wasn’t very happy to be seen. Oh well. No need for you people to deride Nintendo. They make games for us, they don’t strive to fight you to the death. And Nintendo fans, quit being such ungrateful little prideful baby brats. That’s what’s wrong with Nintendo: They’re too haughty for their own good.

    1. Sadly, Disney were being idiots & gave the Star Wars game rights to EA. We Wii U owners are so screwed if EA is still being butthurt over Nintendo denying their Origin. (Just have to hope Disney forces their hand to make games for Wii U.)
