Paste Magazine have published their thorough review of Mario Kart 8. However, during the review the author Casey Malone decides to take some time out to criticise the game’s character roster due to a lack of skin colour diversity. Malone notes that after 30 years there’s still no Mario characters of colour, with the overwhelming majority of characters being white. Here’s what he had to say.
“The other notable omission is in the cast of characters’ diversity. After 30 years there are still zero Mario characters of color, a problem that Mario Kart 8 highlights by lining up all the characters on a single screen. When it comes to human characters, Mario Kart 8 is overwhelmingly white. Of the 29 drivers, 14 are human (including Toad and Toadette), and every single one of them is white. While it’d be atypical of Nintendo to introduce new characters into a Mario Kart game, it’s also where the deficit is the most obvious, and during play I found myself disappointed that Nintendo’s stable of characters so painfully fails to reflect the diversity of its audience.”

I mean, if we ignore the fact that Mii’s are playable and therefore you can play as literally yourself represented in the game, and if we ignore the fact that (to the best of my knowledge) Japan doesn’t really have many people of colour and so it’s probably not something Nintendo would even really consider when designing characters, then sure, this is a valid argument.

Racial problems in games is just like including women in gaming: no one knows limits to what they should be complaining about. Just because a female character has some idealized attributes (big breasts, nice curves) doesn’t mean she’s just a pile of fanservice – she may very well be a great character, have a well constructed character development and her fighting prowess be the best in her game -, but all people see is how she is “one more curvy woman in video games”.
I feel it’s the same with this subject. Sure, we should have more people of different colors integrated in games, but not because someone told us to, but because it’s just natural to do so. Mario Kart 8 doesn’t have one character of a different color? Who cares?! They’re fictional characters that just so happen not to be of a different race. I would be more worried about games that DO have characters of different colors, but instead of addressing them with respect they stereotype the heck out of it!
I think it’s worse having a character of color in a game just because the developers are afraid they’ll be seen as racists or their game will be criticized for not having racial diversity, and end up creating a shallow and stereotyped character than not having one simply because the developers didn’t think of it. Just because they didn’t add a character like that doesn’t mean they’re against people of color!

When a person puts someone of a different culture into a game or story & they don’t know a damn thing about said culture, the person is going to go with the stereotypes that they’ve heard about said culture. For example, an ignorant American author from the late 1930s/early 1940s adds a German character to his/her story, the character will more than likely become a Nazi because the writer thinks all Germans are Nazis.

Then there is Princess Daisy and Peach who were created in a time when Black characters are not prevalent in games (so you could say the same about Mario and Luigi). This is a different type of game. Tomodachi life allows dark skinned Miis at least, as do MK. For a black character to appear there would have to be one already, they can’t just randomly come up with a black character without a real purpose. Lots of gay people exist in Japan, black people does not. ( Some work there for a short time but almost noone of them lives there. To become a Japanese citizen you have to marry another Japanese citizen )
Black people live in Japan for significant periods of time and to become a Japanese citizen you’re not required to marry a Japanese citizen. You need to be of age (21), an upstanding citizen with no significant trouble with the law, lived in Japan for a certain amount of time, and be able to support yourself financially. There are two things wrong with this person’s criticism.
1. As has been well-stated before, the Mario Bros, and presumably the ‘Wario Bros’ are Italians, and believe the very fact that only a little more than half of the cast is human is racially diverse enough!
2. Here’s the biggie: For one to express disappointment at the lack of his skin color amongst portrayals because these characters with white skin just can’t represent him as a person is to be ironically more racially objectifying than any character rosters lack of “diversity”. The fact that the reviewer was perturbed by all of these white characters actually sounds like a pretty racist characteristic, to me.

I hope this guys means color to refer to more than just white, and not just black people, cause there are plenty of non-white races not represented here. If you’re arguing for diversity, argue for mass diversity, not just a single change. That said, this is a Japanese game made by Japanese people with no Japanese characters. If they aren’t adding in their own race, then I think it’s apparent that they aren’t really caring about the same type of race as this guy is. And considering that about half the humans are the same as the other half, just baby-tised, I think diversity is lacking on more than just an ethnic level. I want dry bones back :(

This never dawned on me until now but there’s some truth behind this statement. When you look at Captain Charlie who is also tan and then you look at say Wonder Black, you seriously have to wonder what Nintendo has planned.
They missed their chance with Charlie. It would have been so cool to have a black captain imo. Replace his mohawk with an afro, and darken his skin tone some. The voice acting was gibberish anyway so there’s no need to alter his voice.
There are many ways that characters of color can fit into a Nintendo game, and it’s bullshit to say otherwise so even though it might not matter to some, I can guarantee this isn’t the last time you’ll see this complaint.
I’d say their next chance will be Mario Sports if anything, if you don’t see one by then, it’s probably not ever going to happen. Iirc Princess Daisy was created for a sports game so I can’t see why they can’t do the same for this request.

It’s okay. I was born in 1987 & didn’t play many NES & GB games. In fact, I once thought Daisy was made specifically for a Mario sports game, too. Hell! I thought Baby Mario was Mario & Peach’s baby when I rented Mario Golf for the N64! XD It wasn’t til I got internet & started reading more on my favorite franchises & characters that interested me that I discovered Daisy existed long before Golf as a princess for the handheld Mario game Super Mario Land.

First off, Toad and Toadette are mushrooms, they are supposed to be white, I don’t Enoki mushrooms are ever dark colored. Second, Mario and most of its characters are italian and made in the 80s. Unless your Mii is African American, we won’t be seeing a black character in the Mario Kart games because there are no black characters that appeared early enough in the franchise.
The only black Nintendo character I can think of is Doc Louis from Punch Out. But he’s not a Mario character.

It’s a Japanese game, there aren’t really people of color in Japan, why is it such a bad thing? Nintendo follows the anime rule, the characters are peach colored (white) with non-ethnic features. If this is the only thing we can find is a problem, then I think we’re all set. Just someone trying to stir up some drama.

Failed again, sorry. This is what happens when you don’t think. Pink Gold Peach has that… skin aswell, and DK skin is white. Piantas have a good variety of skin colours, and they appear. Also Lakitu/Koopa Troopa are yellow and there are Goombas: brown skin. So, etc. etc.

Well I think his gripe wasn’t so much with Mario Kart specifically but with the Mario Universe as a whole. Since there hasn’t been any introduction of a character of color. This can be remedied easily as there is more then one kingdom in that universe. Mario can venture into a new location where he discovers a kingdom where there are black characters (rulers) etc and befriend them as they both battle a common enemy that is threatening both their kingdoms or whatever lol. Either way I drew myself in the Mario universe style to remedy it for myself lol.
