Nintendo UK Says Mario Kart 8 Is A “Catalyst” For Elevating Wii U Sales

Mario Kart 8 will rev onto the Wii U in just a couple of weeks, but before players get ready to hurl a spiny shell into first place only to be deflected by the new Super Horn, Nintendo UK’s Mario brand manager Roger Langford has spoken to MCV on the upcoming racing title. While we knew Nintendo UK had a year-long marketing campaign lined up for the game, Langford says fans will be treated to snippets up until launch, then a release-day TV campaign will be shown to make a “big splash”.

Nintendo hopes to shift Wii U consoles in the next couple of months with the free game promotion, which can be claimed on one of up to ten titles when purchasing Mario Kart 8 until July 31. Langford says that since the racing title “brings out the best in whatever hardware it is on”, it’s clear that the company needs to cater to a broader demographic, and believes Mario Kart 8 will be the “catalyst” for elevating Wii U’s sales.

“Mario Kart is one of our killer titles. Looking back at Super Mario Kart and then moving through the ages, you can see how integral Mario Kart is to Nintendo hardware. It always brings out the best in whatever hardware it is on.

“I certainly feel that Mario Kart 8 can be the catalyst that will broaden Wii U’s horizons. It’s very important for us that we have a successful launch and continue the promotion throughout the year and beyond.” – Roger Langford, Nintendo UK Brand Manager

      1. Nintendo is my Blood

Oh no, of course I am dead, I just came back cause I forgot something, Elvis Presley needed to borrow my lawnmower yknow?

        Get a clue moron

        1. It’s worked because its sold alot better then xbox1 for the last 2 weeks like twice as good and has sold very close numbers to ps4 in uk.

  1. I wonder how you nintendoclowns will damage control if the mario kart fail.Hmm wait for Smash?Wait for Bayonetta2?Wait..Wait…Wait.#Nintendooomed#MarioKartRehashU#NintendoGetsBlueShelled#Exposed

          1. that is just what you call people who you dissagree with, but i actually own a wii u, making me a bigger fan of nintendo than you.i also own every nintedno console besides the original gameboy and nes, even though i owned nes a long time ago.

            1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

I might be a fan but I’m not stupid enough to put resources on entertainment first than my studies…

    1. Saying that they are blue shelled implies that they are in front. And guess what: the new horn item prevents the blue shell from working, just like the supposed hit will be prevented with MK8! #failtrolling #exposed

    2. ” Catalyst ” an agent or advisor that pushes a compound or element over a threshold for systematic reaction. Mario Kart 8 is that, it shall sell consoles in a substantial amount for a great WiiU that is making profit on every machine sold. Even SM3DW is making a profit for nintendo as we speak. You troll-ege is mute.

    3. Says the Xbot waiting for a spam of 10 Halos in 24 months or a Sonyan waiting for KH3 and MGS5 Phantom Pain for god knows when.

While Wii U is getting most of the mentioned games THIS YEAR and MK8 is the beginning of Wii U’s major comeback.

You failed troll now GTFO. ;)

    4. Mario Kart won’t fail! We are getting a high quality game that is going to provide tons of fun when playing alone or with friends and family. Considering that this title will be played for years… Well it is already a success to me.

Also I am going to tell you something that you probably already know: new generation consoles are a fraud! Having played Killzone Shadow Fall and Infamous Second Son along with other titles on my PS4 made me see clearly that new generation consoles are basically the same as previous, only with prettier visuals. Same can be said for Xbox One so far which surprisingly I am enjoying a bit more than PS4. I have played the overpriced and over-hyped Titanfall (although found it better than cod btw) or Forza 5 and non of them add anything new to the experience I was already getting with PS3 or XB360… Well yes, slightly prettier visuals :/

Wii U with its poor sales, almost non-existent 3rd party support and way “less power” it is already offering way more than the competition to this day. It is cheaper, more optimized and let you do way more for less.

Hoping for Nintendo that sales reflect their present and future well-doing as they already paid for their past mistakes… but hey, as a gamer I only want to have fun playing. Wii U just need more variety of games, games to appeal a broader range of gamers and we will be talking a very different story here.

But then you are here just trolling, aren’t you? :)

    5. Don’t you mean your damage controlling?

So far Reviews (Even IGN) have stated Mario Kart 8 is amazing… nice try Sasori.

    6. Okay, so I buy all the systems and am not a fan boy of any one company. My question is. What drives people like you to act the way you do? Are you trying to make up for other shortcomings?

    7. Oh, it probably will fail, but that’s because tHe majority of “gamers” nowadays is only interested in graphics and Hollywood-bang-bang!

    8. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

What Nintendo is my Blood said. I watch television shows, movies, interact with friends, interact with my wife & child, eat, sleep, buy a PS4 when it gets games that interest me, etc. Or I could always go onto fan sites of Playstation and Xbox & bash them for liking the consoles, like what you’re doing right now, but I won’t because I have standards & other things to do. So many things to keep me busy til Nintendo is ready.

  2. Very well spoken and humbly applied words Nintendo of Europe. Kirby being in the top 10 came at the most opportune of moments. Smart third parties should take the momentum of the Mario Kart 8 release, patch their games and reduce prices with a promotion of their own on the WiiU.

  3. ”but before players get ready to hurl a spiny shell into first place only to be deflected by the new Super Horn”…

    Very nice, sir.

    1. B3? (Yeah… I know you meant E3) p.s. I hope for a new Metroid or Star Fox at E3, a new F-Zero would be fine too…

  4. the wait is so long til 30th..
playing worderful101 and child of light(what awesome games!) while mk8 is not available..
fortunately july will be the last month of my graphic design graduation, finally.

  5. Honest question: Somebody think sell a lot will do something for the Wii U, when selling 100 millions did little to nothing for the Wii?

    1. Even though some companies are for entertainment and gadgets of use they need an income. Even though Nintendo is about games and consoles, its still all about the money in the end.

  6. I think MK8 won’t be enough to turn the ship around but it might bring them back to Game Cube levels of success (which is fine by me) as long as it is followed by further AAA titles in the near future.

    1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

We are way ahead of the Xbox Done so we are not out of the war…

And Mario Kart 8 has the potential to lead the way of our forces globally…

  7. One game each thee months is not going to save the console, Iwata should be fired for thinking this.

        1. Valve Admiral GLaDOS

And somehow the Ps4 succeeded on many announcements that haven’t even been released in months. Look at the bigger picture than just one area of it.

      1. that’s why they have no faith in their consoles anymore that’s why they want to sell the brand.

  8. Does anyone know if the gamepad can be used as a wheel like the wiimote? And is there a first person view like in 7? Im pretty sure this has already been answered, but thanks anyway! 😊

    1. Of course it can. Imo, the Gamepad seems to respond alot better than Wiimote with motion control. As for first person view, IDK. Probably.

      1. Ok thanks! I thought you would be able to. I do hope they have first-person view though it made Mario Kart 7 so much fun, and the upside down parts would look awesome.

  10. Lucky in the UK, here in the US we get to choose from 4 games and I own them all. Serves me right for trying to support Nintendo.

  11. I’d be interested to see if the game gives of a sense of speed, rather than it just be at some form of “locked” speed.

Would make it feel more competitive.

  12. I’m just glad that this is the one racing series I love. I usually don’t care too much for racing games. But Mario Kart has alwas held a special place in my heart. Same story with baseball and golf Mario games.
