Nintendo Teases More Future Communication Between The WII U And Nintendo 3DS

Shigeru Miyamoto and Shinya Takahashi have explained that they may have some more titles that utilise a connection between the Wii U and the  Nintendo 3DS in the works. We already know that Super Smash Bros will enable players to transfer character data between the two systems, but we haven’t really heard anything else. Here’s what Shigeru Miyamoto and Shinya Takahashi had to say on the subject of connectivity between the two platforms.

“With Smash Bros., because the two games have the same gameplay and the same controls, that game in particular is designed where you’ll want to start playing on the 3DS first and build up your characters there, and then transfer that character data over to the Wii U and play with them there,” Shinya Takahashi, the GM of Nintendo Software Planning & Development, said.

“There’s no real reason that we haven’t done it yet,” Shigeru Miyamoto said. “I guess it just hasn’t really fit into the titles that we have been making and it’s not that we haven’t thought about it.”

“In fact, with Wii Fit U we created the Fit meter which connects to the Wii U GamePad wirelessly and transfers data. Within those plans we also thought about potentially having some type of functionality with 3DS that would connect to it, but ultimately we didn’t include it. We also had an idea where, if there’s a Wii U at home and maybe the father or the kids have a 3DS, then we might think up a system where the Wii U would know that you were home before your dog did,” Miyamoto said, as the room expectedly erupted with laughter.

“It was a kind of interesting concept based around that, but we ended up not doing anything with that idea. It hasn’t really worked its way into the titles we’ve been developing.”

“But there are some things that we’re working on that we haven’t announced here at E3 that do involve some sort of communication between the Wii U and 3DS,” Takahashi teased.

Miyamoto: “We can’t say the title, can we?”

Takahashi: “Not really.”

Miyamoto: “If you were to say it, they would get really excited.”

IGN: Now you really have to say something… (laughs).

Takahashi: “We are thinking about that with Mario and Donkey Kong.”

      1. I’d love a Wii U Pokemon game, but you really can’t blame Nintendo, since it’s Game Freak that makes Pokemon, not Nintendo, and that means if Game Freak doesn’t consider the Wii U suitable for a game, they won’t make one for it, hopefully once the Wii U gets a bit more of an install base, Game Freak will start making a Pokemon game for it.

          1. But GameFreak owns Pokemon, so if a console Pokemon moves ahead, they have to give the go ahead on it and they’ll probably also oversee it, at least enough to make sure it doesn’t totally ruin the franchise

            1. I remember gameFreak stating that they wouldn’t make a console game. The game is built for handheld

      2. I don’t think you’ve been a long enough fan of Nintendo to be raging at them. You have to get used to them not doing what YOU want but what the INDUSTRY needs as a whole.

    2. I sold my 3DS a year ago after Luigi Mansion, since then I found nothing appealing. Nintendo always late.

      1. i had a 3ds since 2012 summer. now adays i feel like the 3ds is over rated piece of trash. the graphics are sometimes just to awuful to look at, the games are just wii ports with little bits of changes and the system ui is pathetic at most. wii u desevere more respect than the turd 3ds.

        1. Overrated trash…. why did you just described the PS Vita?
Kid, you’re pissed that everyone on this site has owned your ass several times and it’s funny as all hell.

You make a rant video but never followed up on it because look, you’re still here… I’m guessing you have less of a life than we thought.

      2. Awww…. baby didn’t get what he wanted because he’s to impatient? What a shame. Don’t blame Nintendo. What, would you rather be stuck with Fortza on launch date?

  1. Can someone tell them to utilize the gamepad properly, please, anyone?
When I first saw Wii U I thought I’m buying it, just by guessing how awesome would it be to play RTS games or diablo-type of games on this thing. Besides pikmin – NOTHING!

  2. “We are thinking about that with Mario and Donkey Kong.”
Together, or separately? First thing that crossed my mind was Mario vs Donkey Kong.

    1. Yeah same, I was really confused when I read that, because–no matter how fun those games are, no one is going to get really excited about that.

  3. I know how you guys feel about the rts genre. When i first saw the original DS all i could think about was how great the console would be for RTSs (and FPSs, for that matter). Well now we have the 3ds and the WiiU and I’m still hoping for a starcraft/AoE type of game. Something competitive like that. These consoles should be able to handle them considering that those games came out in the late 90s. I guess I’ll just have to be content with pikmin.

        1. I found another with the same name and its said on his profile that he works for the Nintendo treehouse in different areas. Either way, I sent a FC request to find the real deal…now I just need NC’s fc so I can destroy him…oh one thing, my pal SuperShadowMarioFan on youtube will be getting highlights win or lose. Prepare yourself!

          1. Me working in Nintendo Treehouse? That would be my dream job. Nvm, I just sent you a Friend Request :)

  4. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

    Let’s see what happens…

I just raced with Nintendo is my Blood and WiiUMasterRace…

    Not bad Blood not bad…

WiiUMR, you need a little more skills *wink*

          1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

You had such luck in that Cloud track once..

It was in the final lap and I used the leaves to come close to you before you won the race so I could hit you with the Soundwave thing…

It missed you by a bloody milimeter…

              1. Nintendo is my Blood

Super Horn, yes, and yeah, Yoshi’s Island, Cloud Tops and Rainbow Road are my best courses

      1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

I still haven’t found my ideal kart though…

The one I had made me drive off sometimes…

            1. I got the gold standard kart already, but I hate time trials, so I’m not gonna attempt the golden tires

                    1. …I think so. To quote IGN, I had to “get at least single star on every Track in Grand Prix mode.”

        1. Nintendo is my Blood

I use karts that have good speed, above average weight, average acceleration and just below average grip and handeling

    1. Sorry, I jumped the gun and didn’t check the comments before I tried to join… it’s 9 a.m. where I live, so I was hoping to join in on the fun.

  5. Alright, I’ll be on all day today as well. If anyone wants to race leery me know. Maybe we could exchange friend codes our something. :P

                  1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

Send me a message on Miiverse tomorrow like 1 hour before we race so I won’t forget…

  6. All out Cross Play between Wii U and 3ds. That’s a Sony stomper there. Get that on board and watch the sales skyrocket. If Sony can do it with PS4/PS3/Vita surely the Big N can do it with 3DS/Wii U!

    1. You can say the same about Halo Collection or Last of Us Rehash.

Kid, give it up, you got owned.

    2. Wow, you really have nothing going on in your life. You make some big deal about not ever commenting on this site again, just to come right back a week later. You really are a pathetic little child.

  7. Wow i sent this in like 2 days ago and you guys ignore it. Now you put it up and no recognition from me? Nice! Bravo!

  8. As long as this means what I think it does, and that’s not having to pay twice to play games like SMB3, Megaman, etc. on my WiiU and 3DS. Thats all I’ve been waiting for. Especially when its the same game on both systems.
