One Nintendo Investor Says He Doesn’t Even Understand Video Games

We’ve heard that investors are determined to get Nintendo games on smartphones, but one investor doesn’t even understand the basic appeal of video games. The investor genuinely felt angry that time was spent discussing video games when he’s much more interested in capital gain and dividends.

“I do not understand video games and I even feel angry because, at Nintendo’s shareholders’ meetings, the shareholders always discuss things relating to video games or such childish topics as “what the future of video games should be,” while I, for one, was flabbergasted that Mr. Iwata continues to hold his position although he had said that he would resign if the company’s performance were bad.”

I hope that Nintendo’s shareholders’ meeting will become an opportunity where the shareholders discuss the company’s business operations from the viewpoints of capital gain and dividend”

Thanks, Simply G

Bet he didn’t speak up at the meeting, but now that it is over, he wants to talk shit, and still Probaly gave Nintnedo his money

          1. Nintendo is my Blood

He didn’t neccessarily say he “hates” video games, but at the meeting he said that the other investors must not use “complex” video game terms and should get to the point

quite unprofessional in the way he speaks, unlike the other investors

Well I never said he did, but he is pretty retarded to invest in something you don’t even know about…

              1. Honestly! Why would you have expectations for a product you don’t understand.
Nintendo needs to buy them self’s out and become private. Clearly this is not working and its a waste of every ones time and money 💵

                1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

Agreed, and as soon as possible…

But now that I remember, didn’t High Command buy like half their shares back some month ago?…

    2. you know … KNOW … this guy is loaded … just LOADED

i’d hate to criticize him … pick your favorite game … yah … that’s this guy’s life.

      1. He’s a businessman. You invest in a company and hope to make a profit by doing so. You don’t need to be a gamer to know that there’s a market for video games and that there’s business to be done. The people who invest in say McDonalds or Burger King are probably businessmen too, not farmers or chefs.

  1. So what? He invested in the company, he has every right to know when they start making money again or he’ll sell his stocks, something Nintendo doesn’t want.

People tend to think stock owners are dumb, but they are smarter. Nintendo has been posting losses for 3 years and no one question them.

    1. I just question his judgement in invest in in a company solely for profit when the company itself doesn’t really seem to mind if they take losses or not

    2. Hey I’m an investor at Rafael Monteiro, and in the interest for the company’s profits and dividends I have to ask you to kill yourself

            1. I agree with Cam0flaj! I’d love to see Nintendo do well profit wise, but I don’t want them to start making unfun and sell out games just because they’re getting some extra pressure from some snobby shareholders who only have money on their mind. I’m thankful they invest in Nintendo, and I know it’s their goal to make money, but Nintendo should make games that are fun (which they have been doing), that people like you and me can all enjoy. So they can be innovative and say “if we lose money on this, oh well, it was worth a try”. I don’t want them making a Call of Duty every year just to earn a little bit of extra cash, and niter should you. Nintendo is about the games and the fun, they money is an after thought.

              1. Nintendo loses money nowdays because their games aren’t as good as they once were. They don’t listen to consumers complaints. They even went as far as shutting their official magazines and stop giving news, using Nintendo Directs instead.

They were profitable during the Wii and DS eras, but now they’re just doing whatever they want, without caring for what we want. GBA and DS games on 3DS? No, you’ll get them on Wii U. Can I use the same software I’ve already bought on different devices? No, buy them multiple times

                1. Chozodian Emissary

Nintendo has said before that they are having a hard time running GBA and DS games through the Virtual Console on the 3DS. They know you want the games so they’re giving them to you. On the Wii U.

                    1. Chozodian Emissary

I’m an ambassador as well and those GBA games are not Virtual Console releases. Nintendo is having a hard time releasing GBA and DS games through the VC on the 3DS. Sure they might be able to release them outside the VC but Nintendo doesn’t want to do that so you get them on Wii U.

                        1. Chozodian Emissary

Limitations are limitations. I’m sure they’ll figure something out, but in the meantime enjoy the GBA and DS games on the Wii U.

                  1. Nintendo games are always fun, That’s why I’ve been playing them since 1994, and I will die playing them.

            1. Yeah but my point is that Nintendo doesn’t seem to care. They’re doing what they’ve always done which in my book is a good thing

                1. Ford did it an they are again in a super profitable situation.
GE had many years of losses before having a turn around.
Currently Sony is losing money and has for many years.

Companies turn around, all of the time depending on changes within them or in the market.

                  1. Companies turn around because they realize something is wrong and they change their way of doing things. Nintendo is not changing and no one cares, that’s why this investor is angry, no one is complaining about it.

              1. I’m a fan of Nintendo because of their games, which continue to be incredible despite their financial losses. And I apologize but I think I’m a bit too smart to off myself, you’re going to have to do it for me

                    1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

And our empire is the foundation of the modern gaming universe ever since the Atarians fell, ipso facto, you wouldn’t be writting about games without our empire…

                    2. Chozodian Emissary

I see, so your profits are based off of someone else’s product. It’s easier for you to make a profit because you’ll always have something to write about. Nintendo is in an entirely different situation than you my friend.

                        1. Chozodian Emissary

Not at all, a stand up comedian and a sitcom have a lot in common. You however report on games. You do not design, produce, or market said games.

                          1. Writing about something is not easier than creating something, both are regular jobs. I don’t have an easier time than Nintendo because my product is based on reporting

                            1. Chozodian Emissary

Nintendo works tirelessly to innovate. I know writing isn’t easy, but reporting the news is not remotely close to crafting something out of thin air.

                              1. Every job is a job, every job is demanding, every job is 90% transpiration, 10% inspiration

This worship of the creative genius is exactly why Nintendo has been making whatever they want and why their products haven’t been selling.

                                1. Chozodian Emissary

Jobs are not equal my friend. People working at McDonald’s would definitely disagree with you. Super Mario 3D World is hailed as the best 3D Mario in years due to innovation through the creative process. Why hasn’t it sold? Because of the influx of Mario within the last few years, not because the game is inherently bad. Too much Mario and people got tired of the fat little plumber and didn’t give the best Mario in years a chance.

You see, Nintendo is constantly innovating and in one paragraph I was able to “report” to you why 3D World didn’t sell very well. You’re job is far less straining than any of the employees at Nintendo or anyone who lovingly crafts art.

                                  1. You think you’re better than people who work at Mc Donald’s? Do you think you work harder than them? Because you don’t.

What you just did is the perfect example of bad reporting, you just posted whatever you think as if it was a fact, you don’t study anything about economy or game design and post it as an universal truth.

                                    1. Chozodian Emissary

I worked at McDonald’s along with my fair share of other retail jobs. I completely understand their plight and empathize with anyone in the service industry.

You seem to think you have some clout because your job requires you to research and dig in order to put words on a page, that this is just as hard as anyone else’s job, but I’m here to tell you that writing is a whole lot easier than any retail job. I’ve worked as a writer and a graphic designer and yes, they had difficulties but nothing compared to the amount of stress it takes to create something like a video game or film.

To report the news is nothing like working in retail or fast food. Just because you report the news doesn’t mean you know better, letting your head swell up because you actually sell your writings is a very dangerous position to be in. I can follow the same sites and leads that you do, I can research and dig just like you do. Your job doesn’t give you anything more than anyone else’s at Nintendo.

                                      1. They way you just directly compare jobs is silly. Everyone works for their money, some work more, some work less, no work is deameaning or less relevant. Creating stuff is not harder than any other job.

And you lack skills and knowdledge. You could have the same soucers as me and you wouldn’t be able to write what I write or draw the conclusions that I do. No better example than your Super Mario 3D World wrong analysis.

I’m not offending you, as the tone might sugests, I’m merely pointing out facts

                                        1. Chozodian Emissary

Yes, people work for their money and some work harder than others. But to hold yourself up to the people who create and design games at any dev studio is absurd. I’m not offended by what you’re saying but it bothers me to see you compare yourself to anyone at Nintendo.

You said that you’re making a profit, of course you’re making a profit because you have nothing at stake. You sell a news article to someone for pure profit, there is no cost involved on your end. Sure, you’ve got every day costs but that’s nothing compared to Nintendo’s daily costs. Plus, you’re also making a profit off of someone else’s intellectual property. Have you ever written something original? Something that has come from your deepest darkest crevices? If you have then you would understand where I am coming from. To create something, to mold it into perfection regardless of what everyone else thinks of it. To intricately piece a story or a game play mechanic together is far more involved than researching for an article. To regurgitate news is nothing like creating something from your soul.

                                          1. Like I said, this worshiping of the creative genius gives Nintendo a Get Out of Jail Free Card. Anything they make, as long as it’s new, get’s worshipe by their hardcore fans. The market don’t, the market will respond to quality, and that’s why they’re where they’re now. To say that Nintendo is doing nothing wrong is being blind to the facts.

I never said what type of text I write. I’ve written news, reviews, articles, books, I’ve even created games. And I can assure you, no job is harder than the other, they’re all invested effort. I’m not egocentric like Nintendo to believe that I’m special because I’m creating something and that people should worship me because of that.

                          2. Technically its 2 years and not in a row. Last year they did turn a profit even with an operating loss, unlike the year before that they had a operating profit but still had a loss.

                            1. Operating loss is the loss that matters, when we say “30 years of profits” there are years where Nintendo lost money because of the Yen, but we don’t count them as losses, just as we don’t count the ones you mentioned as profit

                              1. Then it would still be 2 years in a row cause that first year they only loss money cause of the Yen exchange rate, if you count it the way you are talking about. Its still not 3 years of losses, according yearly stock reports.

Those 30 years they have had no loss, either operating or on a Yen technically, just an FYI.

But generally operating losses are not counted as an overall loss for the company in year end profits. The company can make money off of interest, other company holdings, patents, inflation on foreign trade, and still be considered profitable.

                                1. Here another one to wrap your head around, the year previous to the three would have had a lower leader or even a loss if they didn’t wait two quarters to cash in on the exchange. Also the exchange damage would have been greater if they hadn’t waited. The company actually waited as long as they could without running into tariff problems.

                                  1. They had 3 years of operating losses, only 1 of overall losses. The currency exchange saved them the other 2, but investors don’t count this as profit, this won’t be on dividends.

Couple of years back, on GameCube era, the Yen had a big crash and Nintendo lost money because of the exchange rate. Although they had a operational profit, they posted overall losses. You never saw “Nintendo posts loss for first time in 2X years”, because no one considered that an actual loss.

Operational losses are the important ones because they’re your business health, it’s what shows if you made money ouf of selling your product.

                        2. This is just fucking stupid. Damn these type of people and I hope they are not running the video game industry in the future

                          1. heh.. the reply is great..

“I would like to ask Mr. Kimishima to comment on this valuable opinion from one of the Nintendo shareholders.”

                            gotta love japanese irony^^

                        3. This is great news to hear that some typical, greedy investor doesn’t like how Nintendo operates. I hope Nintendo goes back to being private like Iwata eluded to. The shareholder situation only creates unsustainable hunger for quarterly profits at the expense of all else. When is the last time you bought something and thought it was better than the last time vs now it’s a piece of junk.

                          1. I totally agree. Valve is awesome because they’re private, they would never get away with what they do if they weren’t

                        4. Well, to be fair, numbers and capital gains are what should be discussed at a shareholders meeting, so I can kind of understand their “anger”.
But if he really does not understand video games, investing in a company based on video games might not be the smartest thing to do in the first place.

                        7. If you don’t understand video games, a video game company is probably not the best to invest in (especially since Nintendo is really the only horse in the race that is primarily a video game company), but it’s also easy to see his point. At E3 you communicate things like cool upcoming games to *us*; at shareholders’ meetings you address things like why the company hasn’t turned a profit in three years and what you’re specifically doing to turn the ship around.

                          1. They do that at shareholders meetings. But due to the fact that Nintendo is primarily a video games company, discussions on the industry and where video games are heading have a direct impact on the company’s finances and will no doubt be brought up in discussion.

                        8. I wonder what kind of guy would invest in a company and not even knowing about this company’s main product.

But, hey, I finally understood what’s up with the peoploe that want Nintendo to go mobile.

                        9. i refuse to believe anybody at Nintendo know nothing about video games, i always picture it as a place like Willy Wonkas Chocolate Factory where everyone just enjoys what they do

                          1. This is just an investor, not someone who works for Nintendo. That said, I’m sure there are people who don’t really know much about video games in the company. Maybe people in HR, legal, finance, or other departments that don’t directly deal with games.

                            1. Seeing the entrance requirements once in an article on another sight, I kind of doubt they don’t, at least for the Japan office. It looked really strict.

                              1. Stockholder on the other hand, I can pretty much believe that would happen. But its pretty dumb to invest in something you don’t understand and I have done some investing. That is pretty much the best way to lose money, next to short tern buying for profit.

                        10. Don’t like what Nintendo’s doing? Sell your stock, it’s that simple. Invest in something you are actually interested in or knowledgeable about and can contribute to.

                        11. That guy sounds like he belongs at EA. None of those guys care about anything but money. He’d fit right in.

                          1. He’s a poor idiot and he knows nothing not only about video games also about life, he said that he rather be a human puppet than a normal human.

                        12. Chozodian Emissary

This is why the 3DS and Wii U were rushed out by the shareholders; dividends and capital gain. So sad.

                          1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

                        13. If you don’t understand the basic appeal of video games, why the fuck are you investing your money on it? It’s like your investing your money in a machine that you don’t know how it works.

                            have exposed thy self.

                        15. this guy is a moron. nintendo has to succeed in the future of VIDEO GAMES BECAUSE IT IS A VIDEO GAME COMPANY for him to make more money.

                        16. i wonder how much Microsoft pays for this kind of trade sabotage… a real investor wouldn’t trash talk his stock.

                        17. So, he doesn’t understand Video Games, yet he’s invested in a Video Game company.

That, I believe, is an oxymoron, no?

He i clearly investing in the WRONG company. He must be confused. Someone should tell him that EA is in America.

                          1. Maybe he might wanna consider investing in… toothbrushes. Now that’s something he might be able to understand.

                        19. You NEVER invest in something that you understand nothing about. That’s like me investing in an Astrophysics experiment & I don’t know a damn thing about Astrophysics.

                        20. If he’s not smart enough to know that video games are how Nintendo makes money to begin with, he should get the hell out. You don’t have to be an expert in the field, but you should at least know who you’re investing in on a basic level.

                        21. the thing is I can understand someone who does not know anything about video game investing in Nintendo. I also understand where he comes from to some extent. But from what I read he did not understand the underline discussion which answer his question. Now it’s true the shareholder should have an estimate of when Nintendo will be profitable again and when the dividend will fall but nintendo does not know and they fail to be idiot proof and give number (by all account) if I have to invest into a business I don’t know nothing about I try to learn very fast. Also for a share holder I’m surprise he did not bring this matter the meeting.

                        22. they are a video game company what do you fucking expect??? ”oh lets just talk about money!” nintendo isnt just about money…fucking ridiculous
